  • Four hundred and thirteen oxytetracycline-resistant bacteria were recovered from six freshwater giant prawn farms with a history of oxytetracycline use. Most oxytetracycline-resistant isolates were Gram-negative bacteria. Six groups of oxytetracycline-resistant bacteria were classified using cluster analysis based on a comparison of levels of oxytetracycline resistance. Complex fingerprint patterns were obtained for 71 isolates studied. In general, the band patterns of isolates from different ponds were very similar, and the data indicated that the isolates were closely related. The exploration for cross-resistance found that most of the 71 oxytetracycline-resistant isolates were also resistant to tetracycline and chlortetracycline, but had a relatively low resistance to doxycycline. Many isolates showed higher chlortetracycline resistance than oxytetracycline resistance. Additionally, the oxytetracycline-resistant isolates were examined for the presence of tetracycline resistance (tet) genes. Fifty percent of the isolates carried one of the 14 known tet genes examined. The most common determinants were TetA and TetD. However, TetB, TetC, TetE, TetK, TetL, and TetM were also found with various frequencies.

  • Ships sailing the seas encounter air resistance. The air resistance depends on the shape of the above-water hull, the ship speed, the wind speed and wind direction. The experimental or statistical methods which are used to predict the air resistance are one of the essential procedures of the calculation of the towing force of the disabled ships. This paper shows simplified air resistance prediction method using the variables of the projected area of the above-water hull, the speed of the ship, the wind speed and its direction. These methods have been applied to the existing computer program which had been set up to predict the towing force of the disabled ships.

  • Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) is a zero slump concrete consisting of a mixture of cementitious materials, sand, dense graded aggregates and water. In this study, an attempt has been made to investigate the effect of aggregate type on strength and abrasion resistance of RCC made by using granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) as partial replacement of cement. Mix proportions of RCC were finalized based upon the optimum water content achieved in compaction test. Two different series of RCC mixes were prepared with two different aggregates: crushed gravel and limestone aggregates. In both series, cement was partially replaced with GGBS at a replacement level of 20%, 40% and 60%. Strength Properties and abrasion resistance of the resultant mixes was investigated. Abrasion resistance becomes an essential parameter for understanding the acceptability of RCC for rigid pavements. Experimental results show that limestone aggregates, with optimum percentage of GGBS, perform better in compressive strength and abrasion resistance as compared to the use of crushed gravel aggregates. Observed results are further supported by stoichiometric analysis of the mixes by using basic stoichiometric equations for hydration of major cement compounds.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the fracture resistance of three improved die stone materials according to water/powder ratio. There are lots of handling conditions which affect the physical properties of improved dental stone, and it's well known that the water/powder ratio significantly affect the strength of die stone. If water/power ratio was incorrect, following disadvantages were showed : (1) susceptibility to dimensional change due to abrasion, (2) limited reproduction of fine detail, (3) lack of strength. The maxillary master casts were made of additional silicone impressions(Exaflex, GC America. Inc. USA). Three type IV die stones such as Fuji Rock (GC Europe Intreleuvenlaan, Leuven, Belgium), Velmix(Kerr, Manufacturing company, USA), and Crytal Rock( Maruishi Gypsum Co. Ltd, Japan) were tested. A total of 160 casts were prepared, separated, and tested on the Instron Testing Machine(Model 4201, Co. USA). The obtained results of this study were as follows : 1. Fuji Reck and Velmix less 3ml than the water/power ratio of manufacturer's instruction showed the highest resistance to fracture. According to increasing water/powder ratio, fracture resistance was significantly increased(P<0.05). Crystal Rock showed the highest fracture value when it was mixed with the water/power ratio of manufacturer's instruction. 2. Water/powder ratio of the manufacturer's instructions and less 3ml than that showed lower fracture value of hand mix than that of vacuum mix. Water/powder ratio of more 3ml, 6ml than manufacturer's instructions was not significantly different between hand mix and vacuum mix(p>0.05). 3. Velmix had the highest viscoelastic value among three die materials when it was mixed with the manufacturer's instruction. Viscoelasticity was decreased according to increasing water/powder ratio.

  • One of the major limitations in the use of commercial aromatic polyamide thin film composite (TFC) reverse osmosis (RO) membranes is to maintain high performance over a long period of operation, due to the sensitivity of polyamide (PA) skin layer to oxidizing agents, such as chlorine, even at very low concentrations in feed water. This article reports surface modification of a commercial TFC RO membrane (BW30-Dow Filmtec) by covering it with a thin film of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (GA) to improve its resistance to chlorine. Crosslinking reaction was carried out at 25 and $40^{\circ}C$ by using PVA 1.0 wt.% solutions at different GA/PVA mass ratio, namely 0.0022, 0.0043 and 0.013. Water swelling measurements indicated a maximum crosslinking density for PVA films prepared at $40^{\circ}C$ and GA/PVA 0.0043. ATR-FTIR and TGA analysis confirmed the reaction between GA and PVA. SEM images of the original and modified membranes were used to evaluate the surface coating. Chlorine resistance of original and modified membranes was evaluated by exposing it to an oxidant solution (NaClO 300 mg/L, NaCl 2,000 mg/L, pH 9.5) and measuring water permeability and salt rejection during more than 100 h period. The surface modification effectively was demonstrated by increasing the chlorine resistance of PA commercial membrane from 1,000 ppm.h to more than 15.000 ppm.h.

  • The Enterobacter cloacae biofilms developed on slide glasses and galvanized-iron coupons were applied to test the attached bacterial resistance to chlorination. The chlorine resistances of biofilm bacteria grown on the slide glasses and galvanized-iron coupons were 14 and 480 times that of the suspended bacteria, respectively. The chlorine resistance of particleattached bacterial populations was 48 times that of suspended bacterial populations. The biofilm bacterial densities developed on the slide glasses and galvanized-iron coupons which were immersed in the flowing tap water for 75 days were $4.75 {\times} 10^{4}$ and $1.12 {\times} 10^5 cfu/cm^{2}$ It is concluded that main mechanisms of enteric or HPC bacterial resistance to chlorination in tap waters are bacterial attachment or . adsorption to particles or bacterial aggregations and formation of biofilms on the inner wall of distribution systems by escaped bacteria from chlorination in water treatment processes, which results in bacterial regrowth in water distribution systems.

  • In the present study, we conducted resistance test, propeller open water test and self-propulsion test for a ship's resistance and propulsion performance, using computational fluid dynamics techniques, where a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations solver was employed. For convenience of mesh generation, unstructured meshes were used in the bow and stern region of a ship, where the hull shape is formed of delicate curved surfaces. On the other hand, structured meshes were generated for the middle part of the hull and the rest of the domain, i.e., the region of relatively simple geometry. To facilitate the rotating propeller for propeller open water test and self-propulsion test, a sliding mesh technique was adopted. Free-surface effects were included by employing the volume of fluid method for multi-phase flows. The computational results were validated by comparing with the existing experimental data.

  • This study was carried out to produce high functional and biodegradable coating agents for pulp mold by evaluating various kinds of biodegradable polymers. Five kinds of biodegradable polymers were used. In addition, the mixture of the carboxymethylated starch and biodegradable polymers(${\kappa}$-carrageenan, chitosan) were used for mixed coating agents. Physical properties of coated paperboards were evaluated. Conclusions obtained were as follows. 4% ${\kappa}$-carrageenan and 5% chitosan showed higher water and oil resistance. 10% sodium alginate, 4% corn zein and 15% polycaprolactone showed high water resistance while no improvement was found on oil resistance. The optimum mixture ratios for the mixed coating agents were 90:10(carboxymethylated starch : ${\kappa}$-carrageenan) and 50:50(carboxymethylated starch : chitosan). Since these mixed coating agents have excellent biodegradability with higher water and oil resistance, these can be used for the environmental-friendly coating agents.

  • This study was carried to investigate the effect of humic acid and kaloin which cause the turbidity and organic substance component for optimization of drinking water treatment process using the membrane separation. Also we were ovserved the optimum operating condition which flux was stabilized, while specific resistance value in membrane was minimized. As the result, the membrane separation was operated at low specific resistance value with the increase of the pressure. And then, cake load decreased by high velocity with the increase of the linear velocity, and the tendency in which specific resistance value and flux increased. Therefore, we confirmed the optimum operating condition as pressure $2.0 kgf/cm^2,$ 0.92 m/sec linear velocity.
