This paper reviews the most important steps that have generated consistent progress in principles and developmental progress of embryo cryopreservation, and also study on freezing procedure and its application by conventional method and current improved method for freezing procedure and its appilcation of embryo cryopreservation in farm animals. Four were of particular interest: 1.The transport of water across the ccli membrane (zona pellucida) during freezing and thawing accordinglyplays a role in determing whether the celi survives. This movement of water is controlied mainly by extracellular phase changes and by the nature and concentration of any cryoprotective agent present. Therates of cooling, freezing and warming, and the intervals over which they are applied are further decisi've factors in determining whether a cryopreservation procedure allows survival after thawing. 2.The first successful deep freezing experiments with sheep morula and blastocysts during the seventies were based on the early procedures used for mouse embryos.Current research during the eighties is developed with the aim of simplifying and improving current procedures such as one-step dilution and rapid or ultra-rapid cooling by using the model of laboratory animals. 3.The conventional method for the embryo cryopreservation is described. An alternative to this method which may result in high survival and also in reducing of the freezing and thawing time is done by combing a permeable cryoprotectant such as glycerol, DMSO or propanediol and a non-permeable compound such as sucrose, trehalose, raffinose or lactose. 4.Finally a different approach to the preservation of embryos, named vitrification, is introduced. This procedure depends upon the ability of concentrated solutions of cryoprotective agents such as glycerol and propanediol to supercool to very low temperature (-196$^{\circ}C$) during rapid cooling before solidifying without formation of ice. However, more complete data are necessary for successful vitrification of blastocysts.
${\alpha}$-amylase was investigated as an antistaling agent for Backsulgie, a traditional rice cake. Rice powder was mixed with ${\alpha}$-amylase, fermented for 2 hr at 37$^{\circ}C$, and steamed for 20 min. Rice cake was stored at room temperature or freezer for 4 days, and analyzed to determined the changes of chemical and sensory properties. When ${\alpha}$-amylase was added to rice cake, the content of reducing sugars and the yellow color of the cake were increased, and the water activity was decreased. Soft and moist textural properties were apparent in ${\alpha}$-amylase-added rice cakes by sensory evaluation. X-ray diffraction showed a V pattern after 4 days of storage which indicated the starch of rice cake was not retrograded. However, there was no significant difference in moisture content between enzyme-treated and non-treated rice cakes. Above results suggest that ${\alpha}$-amylase treatment produced dextrins which consequently bound with water and inhibited the retrogradation of rice cake.

This study analysis fundamental properties of high-strength concrete corresponding to W/B ratio for suggested table of high strength concrete, mixed with premixed cement. As a result of this study, the amount of using air entraining and high-range water reducing agent for intended slump flow and air content decreased as W/B increased, and the setting time corresponding to the W/B ratio delayed as W/B ratio increased except 20% W/B ratio. The compressive strength according to W/B ratio decreased as W/B ratio increased, and there was no great deferent as the intended slump flow. Also it could possible to use this study at work as the correlation coefficient is high enough as 0.9646 substituting B/W and compressive strength for the regression formula.
Chelating agents have been proposed to improve the efficiency of phytoextraction of heavy metal hyperaccumulator. However, little studies to elucidate mechanism of chelating agents to increase cadmium (Cd) extractability have been conducted. The objectives of this study were to evaluate effect of different chelating agents on Cd extractability and to determine mechanism of Cd mobilization affected by these agents. An arable soil was spiked with inorganic Cd ($CdCl_2$) to give a total Cd concentration of $20mgCdkg^{-1}$. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and citric acid (CA) were selected and mixed with the arable soil at the rates of 0 and $5mmolkg^{-1}$. The mixture soils were incubated at $25^{\circ}C$ for 4 weeks in dark condition. Concentration of F1 Cd fractions (water soluble) significantly increased with addition of EDTA but did not changed with addition of CA. Especially; concentration of F5 Cd fractions (residual) significantly increased with addition of CA. Increase in water soluble with EDTA might be attributed to complexation of Cd and EDTA. Dissolved organic carbon concentration significantly increased with EDTA addition, but did not with CA implying that considerable amount of CA was decomposed to inorganic carbon by microorganism. Log activity of carbonate ($CO_3{^{2-}}$) which might be generated from CA increased with addition of CA. Increase in residual Cd fraction might be due to precipitation of Cd as $CdCO_3$. As a result, EDTA was effective in increasing Cd extractability, by contrast CA had significant effect in reducing Cd extractability.

To investigate the effect of Bombycis Corpus on male osteoporosis, we performed Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry(DEXA) and histochemical methods. The animals were used ICR-based male mice of 8 weeks and 50 weeks, respectively. ICR male mice at 8 weeks were used in the control group, and ICR male mice at 50 weeks were used in aging group and Bombycis Corpus group(BC group). In the aging group, 0.5 ml of distilled water was administered once a day for 6 months. In BC group, Bombycis Corpus(0.78g/kg) was dissolved in distilled water for 6 months once a day. As a result, Bombycis Corpus decreased bone loss, increased bone density by reducing the loss of bone matrix in the femur due to aging, and increased osteoblast - induced osteopontin(OPN) and osteocalcin(OPC) positivite reaction. In addition, administration of Bombycis Corpus decreased Reaction of activation of nuclear factor kappa B ligand(RANKL) positive reaction, increased osteoprotegerin(OPG) positive reaction, and decreased matrix metalloproteinase-3(MMP-3) and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine(8-OHdG) positivite reaction. Taken together, Bombycis Corpus increases the activity of osteoblasts, inhibits osteoclast function, promotes osteoblast function, inhibits bone tissue degradation, and inhibits bone loss due to oxidative stress. It was observed that Bombycis Corpus reduced bone loss and increased bone density caused by aging to improve male osteoporosis. Therefore, Bombycis Corpus may be used as a preventive and therapeutic agent for male osteoporosis.
To investigate anti-thrombosis and anti-oxidation activities of the root of Arctium lappa L (RALL), which has been used as foodstuff and oriental medicine in Korea, the ethanol extract and its subsequent organic solvent fractions of the RALL were prepared. The yield of ethanol extraction was 10.94%, and the content of total polyphenol and total sugar of ethanol extract were 5.01 and 694.53 mg/g, respectively. The fraction yields of n-hexane, ethylacetate (EA), butanol and water residue were 1.62, 0.42, 5.98 and 85.38%, respectively. In anticoagulation activity assay, the ethanol extract of RALL did not show significant changes in thrombin time (TT), prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), whereas the EA fractions showed 13 folds extended TT, PT, and aPTT respectively. Interestingly, the water residue showed strong activation effect against blood clotting factors with shortened aPTT, which might provide the evidence of coagulation agent of RALL in folk remedy. In anti-platelet aggregation assay, the activity of the ethanol extract and its fractions were comparable to that of aspirin. Especially the EA fraction showed 2-folds higher inhibitory activity than aspirin. In anti-oxidation activity assay, the EA fraction also showed strong in DPPH, ABTS and nitrite scavenging activity, and reducing power activity. The extract and fractions of RALL have ignorable hemolytic activity against human RBC up to 0.5 mg/mL concentration. Our results suggest that the EA fraction of RALL have potentials as safe and novel anti-thrombosis agent.

Objectives: This study was performed to identify the anti-inflammatory effects of Salvia miltiorrhizae radix Water extract (SMW) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced inflammation. Methods: RAW 264.7 cells were treated with 500 ng/ml of LPS. SMW (0.1, 0.25, 0.5 mg/ml) was treated 1 h prior to LPS. Cell viability was measured by MTT assay. Levels of nitric oxide (NO) were measured with Griess reagent and pro-inflammatory cytokines were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). We also examined molecular mechanisms such as mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and nuclear factor-kappa B ($NF-{\kappa}B$) activation by western blot. In addition, we observed mice survival rate after LPS and examined their cytokine levels of serum and liver tissue. Results: SMW itself did not have cytotoxic effects in RAW 264.7 cells less than 0.5 mg/ml. SMW treatment inhibited the production of NO, and interleukin $(IL)-1{\beta}$ which is pro-inflammatory cytokine. And SMW treatment inhibited the LPS-induced activation of MAPKs such as extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 (ERK1/2), p38 kinases (p38), c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) and $NF-{\kappa}B$. In addition, it also showed reducing the level of $IL-1{\beta}$ on the serum and liver tissue of mice. Also, death of LPS-induced mice was inhibited by SMW. Conclusions: The result suggests that treatment of SMW could reduce the LPS-induced inflammation. Thereby, SMW could be used as a protective agent against inflammation. Also, this study could give a clinical basis that SMW could be a drug or agent to prevent inflammatory diseases.
The purpose of this study was to assess the antimicrobial and clinical effects of acid water mouthrinse prepared by an electrolysis apparatus on chronic periodontitis and to evaluate the lasting period of these effects. The change' in the pattern of colonization of bacteria within the subgingival pockets was monitored by phase contrast microscopy, in 40 patients, over a period of 8 weeks. In addition, changes in the clinical parameters of the diseased sites were also monitored. Site of pocket ${\geq}$ 5mm was selected in each patient randomly divided into two groups. As a test group, acid water mouthrinse was used twice a day in 20 patients. As control, no mouthrinse was used in 20 patients The results were as follows : 1. The suppression of motile bacteria was maintained for up to 3-4 weeks at test group. 2. Two groups did not differ significantly in proportion of bacteria in subgingival plaque over a period of 8 weeks. 3. Loss of attachment showed a significant difference in test group and in test group compared with control group (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference in control group. 4. No statistical difference was shown in two groups concerning the gingival index, plaque index, bleeding index. The results suggest that acid water mouthrinse is effective for reducing subgingival bacteria. It can be concluded that acid water may be useful as an mouthrinsing agent.
The aim of this study is to screen a therapeutic agent with a cognitive function. The inhibitory effect of $Curcuma$$longa$ hot water extract (CLWE) on the angiotension-converting enzyme and acetylcholinesterase derived from rabbit lungs and neural cells (PC12), as well as its antioxidant effect, was investigated in this study. Thus, for the first time, the direct scavenging effect of CLWE on DPPH radicals, superoxide anions, hydroxyl radicals, lipid peroxidation, reducing power, and the protective effect of DNA oxidation related to oxidative stress was evaluated in vitro. In addition, it was observed that CLWE especially exhibited a scavenging effect on reducing power and superoxide anions in this study. CLWE showed a protective effect on DNA oxidation produced by hydroxyl radicals. Furthermore, CLWE inhibited the activity of angiotensin-converting enzymes above 0.25%. Additionally, the extract inhibited oxidative stress and inducible nitric oxide in neuronal cells. Therefore, these results demonstrated that CLWE has antioxidant activity and neuronal cell protective effects, suggesting that it may have great potential as a natural source for human health.

This study was conducted in order to compare the biological activities of leaf and root water extracts of Smilax china L. (SC) by measuring the total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, anti-oxidant activity, inhibitory effect on ${\alpha}$-glucosidase, and anti-inflammatory gene expression. The total polyphenol and flavonoid contents of SC leaf (SCLE) and root (SCRE) water extracts were 127.93 mg GAE/g and 39.50 mg GAE/g and 41.99 mg QE/g and 1.25 mg QE/g, respectively. The anti-oxidative activities of SCLE and SCRE were measured using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) radical scavenging activity assay and reducing power assay. Both SCLE and SCRE scavenged radicals in a concentration-dependent manner, and SCLE showed stronger radical scavenging activity and reducing power than SCRE; however, both SCLE and SCRE exhibited lower activities than ascorbic acid. Compared to the anti-diabetic drug acarbose, which was used as a positive control, SCLE and SCRE exhibited low ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibition activities; nevertheless, the activity of SCLE was 3.7 fold higher than that of SCRE. Finally, SCLE caused significantly decreased expression of the LPS-induced cytokines, iNOS, and COX-2 mRNA in RAW264.7 cells, indicating anti-inflammatory activity. These results indicate that SCLE might be a potential candidate as an anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic, and anti-inflammatory agent.
