Water quality management should be focused on the pollution concentrated area so that the improvement of water quality can be achieved effectively for the management of Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs). It is necessary to consider discharge characteristics in the TMDL plan. This study analysed discharge characteristics such as pollution generation and discharge load density, and reduction potential by each unit watershed, and categorized the unit watershed into four groups according to its discharge load characteristics. This analysis can be used as helpful information for the prioritization of pollution reduction area and selection of pollution reduction measures in the development of TMDL plans.

The characteristics of non-point source pollutant loads in middle-stream of Nakdong River Were studied through analysis of pollutant loads of 8 sub-watersheds divided based on administrative district. The pollutant concentration of each sub-watershed was collected from Nakdong-River Water Research Institute and Daegu Regional Environmental Office, respectively. Pollution items analysed in this study were BOD, SS, T-N and T-P. High degree of non-point pollution was observed from Gumi, Goryeong, Gyeongsan, Daegu and Sungju, and pollution was usually increased during rainy season. This result indicates that a given pollution condition within the watershed can be more sensitive than location factor to the level of water quality. The main sources of non-point pollution were population and livestock, as well as landuse factor, and were found to significantly contribute to the water pollution. Alternative solutions for controlling pollution sources, therefore, should be provided to meet target levels of water quality in this region.

It is necessary to predict future water pollution sources in the establishment of Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) plan for watershed management. There are some difficulties and limits in estimating the pollution sources accurately since the prediction method is not firmly established. This study reviewed the existing methods of prediction and developed a technique characteristics. The characteristics were obtained by analyzing the change pattern of pollution sources by region and incorporated in the technique. A distinctive feature of the technique is to eliminate the influences of land use change included in the pollution source data of a region. The technique has been applied and tested. The test result showed the improvement on the prediction accuracy. A computer program was also developed for the easy application of the technique.

In this study, we identified the major pollution-zones of the mainstream and its tributaries of Gongneung stream and investigated their pollution sources based on water quality, flowrate and pollution-load data of the stream having the characteristics of the urban-rural complex to examine the effect of the tributaries on the water quality changes in the mainstream. The water quality and flowrate data were collected for 10 months (2018 ~ 2019) at 3 points of mainstream and ten tributaries. Water quality index (WQI), load duration curve (LDC), discharge load density (DLD)and delivery ratios for each tributary were obtained so as to investigate the pollution characteristics and some of the information visualized on GIS. The main pollution-zone in the Gongneung stream was in the middle and lower streams, and the tributaries that may affect the pollution of the area were JS, JY, SL and SM. JS and SL had low WQI levels (34.7/37.5) and DLD (kg/d/㎢) of BOD and T-P were relatively high in JY (99.2/6.00) and SL (60.0/2.07). BOD and T-P delivery ratios in JS were high (0.94/0.83), suggesting that JS had significant influence on the water quality of the main pollution-zone in the Gongneung stream. Meanwhile, SM having a high T-P delivery ratio (0.97) was found to be more affected by the non-point source due to the higher LDC excess rate (%) in the low flow compared to high flow. This study provides basic data on the water quality and pollution characteristics of the Gongneung stream, and the analysis results are expected to be used as examples for identifying the main pollution-zone and tributaries of stream and their pollution sources.

The characteristics of nonpoint source pollutant loads in upstream of Nakdong River were studied through analysis of pollutant loads of 10 sub-watersheds divided based on administrative district. The discharge and pollutant concentration of each sub-watershed were collected from Nakdong-River Water Research Institute and Daegu Regional Environmental office, respectively. Pollution items analysed in this study were BOD, T-N and T-P. The delivery loads of the nonpoint source pollutions of each sub-watershed were calculated after analysing the concentration of the pollution of each site. Several points were found from the results. Firstly, in general, city areas including Sangju, Andong showed higher degree of nonpoint pollution than country areas including Cheongsong, Yeongyang. The sub-watersheds located upstream side, such as Yeongju, Bonghwa, Necessarily show better water quality than the sub-watersheds located downstream side, such as Mungyeong, Uiseong. This result indicates that a given pollution condition within the watershed can be more sensitive than location factor to the level of water quality. Secondly, the delivery load and area of watershed were not necessarily correlated in the sense of water quality, while the discharge was shown to be highly correlated to the delively load of pollution. Lastly, sewage and waste caused from population and livestock, as well as landuse factor, were found to significantly contribute to the water pollution. Alternative solutions for controlling pollution source, therefore, should be provided to meet target levels of water quality in these regions.

The performance of a stream water quality analysis model depends upon many factors attributed to the geological characteristics of a watershed as well as the distribution behaviors of pollutant itself on a surface of watershed. Because the model run has to import the pollution load from the watershed as a boundary condition along an interface between a stream water body and a watershed, it has been used to introduce a pollution delivery coefficient to behalf of the boundary condition of load importation. Although a nonlinear regression model (NRM) was developed to cope with the limitation of a conventional empirical way, this an up-to-date study has also a limitation that it can't be applied where the pollution load washed off (assumed at a source) is less than that delivered (observed) in a stream. The objective of this study is to identify what causes the limitation of NRM and to suggest how we can purify the process to evaluate a pollution delivery coefficient using many field observed cases. As a major result, it was found what causes the pollution load delivered to becomes bigger than that assumed at the source. In addition, the pollution load discharged to a stream water body from a specific watershed was calculated more accurately.

Some data into combined and sanitary sewer system were collected in order to find out the characteristics of discharge from first flush rainfall inflow. The inflow ratios of combined and sanitary sewer system were 0.46 and 0.27 during rains from various survey data. The average inflow ratio 0.31 was appropriate for general application because many watersheds were not classified clearly as combined or sanitary sewage treatment areas. The percentage of first flush loads in the whole BOD load was about 10%. This result was thought some meaningful, comparing with similarity of first flush pollution load contribution previous surveyed by KECO (2004).

Amended Water Quality Environment Preservation Law enacted that the areas where nonpoint pollution is serious can be designated as Nonpoint Source Management Region. According to Section 54 of Water Quality Environment Preservation Law, corresponding watersheds are areas where runoff from nonpoint pollution source may deteriorate river and lake water quality, residents' health and property, and ecosystem. The criteria are as followings; i) where nonpoint source contribution result in or will result in significant ecological destruction, iii) national or local industrial complexes and cities having population greater than one million where nonpoint source managements are necessary, iv) where specific measurement is necessary because of its geological and stratigraphic characteristics. In this research, detailed designation criteria was developed reflecting current nonpoint source management situation and its discharge characteristics. Depending on the result, target regions were also suggested. In additions, it will be desirable that the target regions are prioritized considering institutional execution availability, stakeholder's agreement, and connection with existing nonpoint source pollution management measures.

In this study, the characteristics of nonpoint pollutant outflow and contribution rate of pollution in Songya-stream mainstream and tributaries were analyzed. Further, water pollution management and improvement measures for pollution-oriented rivers were proposed. An on-site investigation was conducted to determine the inflow of major pollutants into the basin, and it was found that pollutants generated from agricultural land and livestock facilities flowed into the river, resulting in a high concentration of turbid water. Based on the analysis results of the pollution load data calculated through actual measurement monitoring (flow and water quality) and the occurrence and emission load data calculated using the national pollution source survey data, the S3 and S6 were selected as the concerned pollution tributaries in the Songya-stream basin. Results of cluster analysis using Pearson correlation coefficient evaluation and Density based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) technique showed that the S3 and S6 were most consistent with the C2 cluster (a cluster of Songya-stream mainstream owned area) corresponding to the mainstream of Songya-stream. The analysis results of the major pollutants in the concerned pollution tributaries showed that livestock and land pollutants were the major pollutants. Consequently, optimal management techniques such as fertilizer management, water gate management in paddy, vegetated filter strip and livestock manure public treatment were proposed to reduce livestock and land pollutants.

In the northernmost basin of the Bukhan River, pollution sources can have a concentrated distribution. In these basins, small streams show low flow with various and rapid water quality change in low pollutants load. Therefore, a water quality improvement plan of small streams and main stem will be necessary to establish the characteristics of small streams. This study selected a representative Hwacheon-gun in the northernmost basin of the Bukhan River. Hydro analysis was performed with GIS tools using DEM. A total of 152 small streams were listed. A total of 51 survey locations were selected after applying the selection criteria. Flow rate and water qualities were investigated. Pollution sources and pollutants loads were calculated for each basin. Pollution grade and typological classification were performed by cluster analysis using standardized environmental condition factors. As a result, G04, G01, H01 locations were found to have the worst pollution grades whereas J01, P01, and P02 had less pollution. Typological analyses were able to classify six types for the surveyed small streams. An effective water quality improvement plan was obtained based on the results of pollution grade and typological analysis using environmental condition factors of this study.
