  • This paper analyses the investment options of groundwater development project under water price uncertainty. The optimal investment threshold price which trigger the investment are calibrated base on monopolistic real options model. Stochastic dynamic model is set to reflect the uncertainty of water price which follows the GBM (Geometric Brownian Motion) process. Our finding from non-cooperative investment decision model is that uncertainty of water price could deter the groundwater investment by considering the existence of option values. For policy markers, it is easy to manage 'charges for utilization of groundwater' rather than 'performance guarantee ratio' when managing groundwater investment with pricing policy. And it is necessary to make comprehensive and well-designed policies considering the characteristics of regional groundwater reservoir and groundwater developers.

  • Frequently occurring flood and drought due to abnormal climate and global warming have increased the necessity of an effective water resources control and management of river flows. The various hydraulic structures are constructed in river as part of an effective water resources management. It is very important to analyse characteristics of flow according to installing hydraulic structures in this situations. The objective of this study is to investigate the hydraulic behaviors of flow considering affections of hydraulic structures using 2-D numerical model. To do this, both RMA-2 model and developed RAM2 model are used to analyse flow phenomena before and after installation of hydraulic structures in Nakdong river. As a result of, the water surface elevation at upstream regions increased about 22cm~66cm and the velocity around the structures sharply increased after installation of structures. The measures for the rise of water surface at upstream and local scour due to high velocity around the structures must be established when the structures is constructed.

  • In Jinhae-Masan bay, a typical semi-dosed bay in Korea, the water quality is severely deteriorated because of the dosed topographic character and the inflow of nutrients from the land. There have been attempts to apply a water quality model dealing with the entrophication phenomenon and the oxygen-deficient mass in the bay in summer, but there have been few examples of models that have considered the phenomenon of stratification in the proper order, and then it is performed the model of water quality. Therefore, this study collected and analyzed the pre-observed water temperature data from Jinhae-Masan bay in summer and then constructed a density model using the topographic heat accumulation effect and inflow from the river to examine the temperature stratification. The simulation results show that this model could demonstrate the temperature stratification in the Jinhae-Masan bay very well.

  • Baroclinic hydraulic model experiments on the time-varying states of the flow pattern and water exchange in Sagami Bay were carried out based on quasi-steady state experiments on the flow pattern. For the model experiments, density changes as well as time changes in the volume transport of the upper layer were executed to investigate the flow response of the bay in the case of a sudden inflow of low density water and variable volume transport into the Sagami Bay. The results of the model experiments showed that when the volume transport was increased frontal eddies or frontal wave streamers from the Kuroshio Through Flow were transferred to the inner part of the bay along with cyclonic circulation in the bay. In addition, density boundary currents appeared and flowed along the eastern boundary of the bay. As the upper layer density decreased, frontal eddies, frontal streamers and coastal boundary density currents occurred and proceeded along the eastern boundary of the bay at a high speed.

  • The purpose of this study is to construct an Environment Database Management System (EDMS) for the Saemangeum watershed based on the linkage of Water Quality Model, i.e. QUALKO and WASP model, and GIS database to estimate water quality effectively in this area. There are two major river systems on this study area, the Mangyeong and the Dongjin rivers. Input data are automatically generated through the calculation of the pollutant loading and inflow concentration from the point and non-point sources. The developed system is composed of three different phases, such as pre-process, model performance and post-process. The Model performance is supported by the database at pre-process phase and model performance results were shown in the graphs and attribution data at post-process phase. The measured data from the Mangyeong and the Dongjin rivers are used to evaluate the applicability of EDMS. The EDMS shows higher reliability, and it is expected to contribute to the effective management and improvement of water quality modeling in the Saemangeum watershed since the system reduces complications of using a model in DOS operating environment and increases the accuracy of water quality analysis.

  • To study the dispersion process and residence time of anthropogenic pollutant in Masan bay, a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model coupled to a particle tracking model, EFDC, is applied. Particle tracking model simulated the instantaneous release of particles emulating discharge from river and wastewater treatment plant to show the behaviour of pollutant in terms of water circulation and water exchange. Modelled outcomes for water circulation were in good agreement with tidal elevation and current data. The results of particle tracking model show that over half of particles released from northern Masan bay transport to out of area while the particles from Dukdong wastewater treatment plant transport to northern area. This meant pollution source from inside and outside of the northern area can affect water quality of northern Masan bay.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop two dimensional contaminant transport numerical model by finite element method. The developed model system was tested for water quality analysis when contaminants from tributaries and sewage treatment Plants flow into the main river. In this study, the model was to perform calibration for reasonable parameter production and verification for reliability and accuracy. And, the proposed model was applied on the downstream of Han river using calibrated parameters. These results represented real con taminant distribution profile along the channel, and produced the good agreement in comparing calculated vague with measured value.

  • To assess preliminarily the contamination potential of water resources including groundwater owing to the hydrogeological characteristics of landfill site and the potential impact to humans and animals through contamination of water resources by leachate, "Landfill Site Preliminary Assessment Model(LASPAS)" was contrived. LASPAS could help them proritization of remediation of landfil sites by the convenient and relatively simple evaluation method of landfill site features. LASPAS was designd to aliot numerical ratings to landfill site related factors undermentioned; 1) hydrogeological factors such as hydraulic conductivity of aquifer, thickness of confining layer over aquifer, topographical slope, net recharge, and subsurface containment 2) water resources contamination factors of impacts on receptors such as proximity to drinking water supply, substitutability of drinking water supply, type of use of water resources, known impact on drinking water supply, and flood potential.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the main cause of water quality deterioration during the spring season in the transition zone between the South Han River and the river-reservoir Paldang. A water quality model modified from QUAL2E (U.S.EPA) was used, and the model showed that eutrophication and algal production in the low flow season affected about 60% of the organic pollution at the downstream of the South Han River. This result means that phosphorus control is prior to external organic material management to ameliorate the deterioration of water quality in the water body.
