  • Since the middle of 1990s, in Korea a few researches on the optimal management technologies combining numerical model and GIS for the management of water environment in drinking watershed area and reservoir such as Paldang Lake have been carried out. In this study, the integrated water environment management system was been suggested to efficiently reflect the public awareness of the environment by integrating the web based distributed data collection system, GIS, public hearing system and water quality model. As all the components of the system have been developed using the World Wide Web and all data have been collected from the relevant agencies through the Internet, the water quality model could be implemented on the web directly. In consequence, the environmental geographic information in Paldang Lake could be acquired and analyzed through the Internet. The system can rapidly respond to the public right to know on environment, so the public will willingly participate in the governmental projects on environment. To verify the usability of the developed system, it has been applied to Paldang Lake. Especially when the web based model has been used, users can easily and confidentially get the prediction results by applying the minimum number of parameters for the water quality model. This model will provide clearness and scientific bases in the process of water quality prediction for the sensitive sites where there are critical conflicts between the residents and the developers. In this study, rapid water environment management technique without spatial and time limit has been suggested, which can contribute to the efforts on the government and the public participation.

  • Mathematical models can be used to evaluate the effects of operational alternatives of dam on the downstream aquatic environment. An unsteady, one-dimensional water quality model, CE-QUAL-RIVI was calibrated and validated in Geum river as a sub model for the realtime water management system in the basin. The main usage of the model within the system is to predict the effects of flow regulation by Daecheong Dam on the downstream water quality. The validated model was then used to simulate dynamic water quality changes at several key stations responding to different scenarios of reservoir releases under a hypothetical spill condition. The model showed fairly good performance in the simulation of hydrodynamic and mass transport processes under highly unsteady conditions.

  • Hydrological modeling is a very complex task dealing with multi-source of data, but it can be potentially benefited from recent improvements and developments in remote sensing. The estimation of actual land surface evapotranspiration (ET), an important variable in water management, has become possible based entirely on satellite data. This study adopted a Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL) with the use of MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) satellite products. The SEBAL model is one of the commonly used approach for the ET estimation. A primary advantage of the SEBAL model is rather its minimum requirement for ground-based weather data. The MODIS provides ET (MOD16) product that is based on the Penman-Monteith equation. This study aims to further develop the SEBAL model by employing a more rigorous parameterization scheme including the estimation of uncertainty associated with parameter and model selection in regression model. Finally, the proposed model is compared with the existing approaches and comprehensive discussion is then provided.

  • Hypoxia has persisted during summer in the bottom water of the lower portion of the Rappahannock Estuary, a western shore tributary of Chesapeake Bay. A laterally integrated two-dimensional, real-time model, consisting of linked hydrodynamic and water quality models, was developed to study the contributing processes for hypoxia. The hydrodynamic model gives the information of physical transport processes, both advective and diffusive, to the water quality model, which simulates the spatial and temporal distributions of eight water quality state variables. • A computer model is developed to assess optimal ground water pumping rates and optimal locations of wells in a coastal region. A sharp interface model is used to simulate the freshwater and salt water flows. Drawdown, upconing, saltwater intrusion and the contamination of well are considered in this model. A genetic algorithm with parallel processing is used to identify the optimal solution.

  • This paper is a study on a nuclear water chiller. It presents a test-verified finite element model of a water chiller to be used at a Nuclear Power Plant. The test-verified model predicts natural frequencies within 5% for all major modes below 50 Hz. This model accurately represents the dynamic characteristics of the actual hardware and is qualified for its use in the final stress analysis for seismic verification.

  • The completely mixed flow and plug flow (CAP) water quality model was developed for streams with discontinuous flows, a condition that often occurs in low base flow streams with in-stream hydraulic structures, especially during dry seasons. To consider the distinct physical properties of each reach effectively, the CAP model stream network can include both plug flow (PF) segments and completely mixed flow (CMF) segments. Many existing water quality models are capable of simulating various constituents and their interactions in surface water bodies. More complicated models do not necessarily produce more accurate results because of problems in data availability and uncertainties. Due to the complicated and even random nature of environmental forcing functions, it is not possible to construct an ideal model for every situation. Therefore, at present, many governmental level water quality standards and decisions are still based on lumped constituents, such as the carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand (CBOD), the total nitrogen (TN) or the total phosphorus (TP). In these cases, a model dedicated to predicting the target concentration based on available data may provide as equally accurate results as a general purpose model. The CAP model assumes that its water quality constituents are independent of each other and thus can be applied for any constituent in waters that follow first order reaction kinetics. The CAP model was applied to the Geum River in Korea and tested for CBOD, TN, and TP concentrations. A trial and error method was used for parameter calibration using the field data. The results agreed well with QUAL2EU model predictions.

  • A watershed model was constructed using Hydrological Simulation Program Fortran to quantitatively predict the stream flows at major tributaries of Nakdong River basin, Korea. The entire basin was divided into 32 segments to effectively account for spatial variations in meteorological data and land segment parameter values of each tributary. The model was calibrated at ten tributaries including main stream of the river for a three-year period (2008 to 2010). The deviation values (Dv) of runoff volumes for operational stream flow forecasting for a six month period (2012.1.2 to 2012.6.29) at the ten tributaries ranged from -38.1 to 23.6%, which is on average 7.8% higher than those of runoff volumes for model calibration (-12.5 to 8.2%). The increased prediction errors were mainly from the uncertainties of numerical weather prediction modeling; nevertheless the stream flow forecasting results presented in this study were in a good agreement with the measured data.

  • This study aims at the development of a mathematical approach for the optimal water allocation in the river basin where available water is not in sufficient. Its optimal allocation model is determined from the comparison and analysis of mathematical programming techniques such as transportation programming and dynamic programming models at its optimal allocation models. The water allocation system used in this study is designed to be the optimal water allocation which can satisfy the water deficit in each district through inter-basin water transfer between Kumho river basin which is a tributary catchment of Nakdong river basin, and the adjacent Hyungsan river basin, Milyang river basin and Nakdong upstream river basin. A general rule of water allocation is obtained for each district in the basins as the result of analysis of the optimal water allocation in the water allocation system. Also a comparison of the developed models proves that there is no big difference between the models Therefore transportation programming model indicates most adequate to the complex water allocation system in terms of its characteristics It can be seen, however, that dynamic programming model shows water allocation effect which produces greater net benefit more or less.
