  • The objective of the study was to investigate the off-flavor generated from PET water bottles and their caps by using a mass spectrometry-based electronic nose. The ion fragment data obtained from the electronic nose were used for discriminant function analysis (DFA). In the case of increased concentrations of the contamination of water, the off-flavor pattern depended on the discriminant function second score instead of the discriminant function first score. To identify the cause of off-flavor in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottled water, the PET bottle and its cap were analyzed by DFA. The results showed that the cap generated more volatile compounds than the bottle or mineral water did. The substances causing the off-flavor were predicted to be 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol (2,4-DTBP), nonanal, and decanal when the main peak of the mass spectrum was compared with the major ion fragments of the electronic nose. Thus, using this method, we could determine whether the PET water bottle was contaminated and whether the off-flavor resulted from contamination of the bottle cap.

  • In order to determine the rate of penetrability, water pressure test is used before the grouting. One of the parameters which have the highest effect is pressure. Mathematical modeling is used for the first time in this study to determine the optimum pressure. Thus, the joints that exist in the rock mass are simulated using cylindrical shell model. The joint surroundings are also modeled through Pasternak environment. In order to validate the modeling, pressure values obtained by the model were used in the sites of Seymareh and Aghbolagh dams and the relative error rates were measured considering the differences between calculated and actual pressures recorded in these operations. In water pressure test, in Seymareh dam, the error values were equal to 4.75, 3.93, 4.8 percent and in the Aghbolagh dam, were 22.43, 5.22, 2.6 percent and in grouting operation in Seymareh dam were equal to 9.09, 32.50, 21.98, 5.57, 29.61 percent and in the Aghbolagh dam were 2.96, 5.40, 4.32 percent. Due to differences in rheological properties of water and grout and based on the overall results, modeling in water pressure test is more accurate than grouting and this error in water pressure test is 7.28 percent and in grouting is 13.92 percent.

  • There are demands for water environmental analysis of discharge processes in paddy fields, however, it is not fully understood in nutrients discharge process for watershed modeling. As hydrological processes both surface and ground water and agricultural water managements are so complex in paddy fields, the development of lowland paddy fields watershed model is more difficult than upland watershed model. In this research, the improvement of SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model for a paddy watershed was conducted. First, modification of surface inundated process was developed in improved pot hole option. Those modification was evaluated by monitoring data. Second, the monitoring data in river and drainage channel in lowland paddy fields from 2012 to 2014 were analyzed to understand discharge characteristics. As a case study, Imbanuma basin, Japan, was chosen as typical land and water use in Asian countries. In this basin, lowland paddy fields are irrigated from river water using small pumps that were located in distribution within the watershed. Daily hydrological fluctuation was too complex to estimate. Then, to understand surface and ground water discharge characteristics in irrigation (Apr-Aug) and non-irrigation (Sep-Mar) period, the water and material balance analysis was conducted. The analysis was composed two parts, watershed and river channel blocks. As results of model simulation, output was satisfactory in NSE, but uncertainty was large. It would be coming from discharge process in return water. The river water and ground water in paddy fields were exchanged each other in 5.7% and 10.8% to river discharge in irrigation and non-irrigation periods, respectively. Through this exchange, nutrient loads were exchanged between river and paddy fields components. It suggested that discharge from paddy fields was not only responded to rainfall but dynamically related with river water table. In general, hydrological models is assumed that a discharge process is one way from watershed to river. However, in lowland paddy fields, discharge process is dynamically changed. This function of paddy fields showed that flood was mitigated and temporally held as storage in ground water. Then, it showed that water quality was changed in mitigated function in the water exchange process in lowland paddy fields. In future, it was expected that hydrological models for lowland paddy fields would be developed with this mitigation function.

  • A numerical flow-field analysis is performed to investigate flow configurations in the anode, cathode and cooling channels on the bipolar plates of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Continuous open-faced flow channels are formed on the bipolar plate surface to supply hydrogen, air and water. In this analysis, two types of channel pattern are considered: serpentine and spiral. The averaged pressure distribution and velocity profiles of the hydrogen, air and water channels are calculated by two-dimensional flow-field analysis. The equations for the conservation of mass and momentum in the two-dimensional fluid flow analysis are slightly modified to include the characteristics of the PEMFC. The analysis results indicate that the serpentine flow-fields are locally unstable (because two channels are cross at right angles). The spiral flow-fields has more stable than the serpentine, due to rotational fluid-flow inertia forces. From this study, the spiral channel pattern is suggested for a channel pattern of the bipolar plate of the PEMFC to obtain better performance.

  • This study was performed to get the optimal operating conditions of an water-air compact heat pump system using R-134a. The experiments was done for three elvels of the air mass flow rate and the compressor driving speed during air-heating process. The temperature of the air at the condenser inlet and outlet was 17~23$^{\circ}C$, 36~44$^{\circ}C$, respectively. The average temperature of the refrigerant at the evaporator and condenser was 1$0^{\circ}C$, 6$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. The temperature of the refrigerant was not depending on the air mass flow rate and the compressor driving speed. The pressure of the refrigerant at the condenser inlet and outlet was ranged of 10~18.5kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and that at the evaporator was ranged of 3.1~3.3kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The pressure drop at the condenser and evaporator was about 1.5, 1.2 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively. The performance of coefficient for air heating was about 3.3~4.0.

  • Fuel cells are devices that convert chemical energy directly into electrical energy. Owing to the high efficiency of the fuel cells, a large number of research work have been done during these years. Among many kinds of the fuel cells, a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell is such kind of thing which works under low temperature. Because of the specialty, it stimulated intense global R&D competition. Most of the major world automakers are racing to develop polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell passenger vehicles. Unfortunately, there are still many problems to be solved in order to make them into the commercial use, such as the thermal and water management in working process of PEMFCs. To solve the difficulites facing the researcher, the analysis of the inner mechanism of PEMFC should be implemented as much as possible and mathematical modeling is an important tool for the research of the fuel cell especially with the combination of experiment. By regarding some of the assumptions and simplifications, using the finite element technique, a two-dimensional electrochemical mode is presented in this paper for the further comparison with experimental data. Based on the principals of the problem, the equations of electronic charge conservation equation, gas-phase continuity equation, and mass balance equation are used in calculating. Finally, modeling results indicate some of the phenomenon in a unit cell, and the relationships between potential and current density.

  • The predictions of the COBRA-IV-I code with the modified turbulent mixing and void drift models have been compared with the diabatic two-phase flow data on equilibrium quality. The turbulent mixing model based on an equal mass exchange of the existing COBRA-IV-I code has been modified to that based on an equal volume exchange between adjacent subchannels, and a void drift model has been newly incorporated in the code. To evaluate the performance of the equal volume exchange turbulent mixing model and the effects of the void drift model, the diabatic steam-water two-phase flow data obtained for the 9-rod bundle test under the typical operating conditions of the boiling water reactor(BWR) conducted by the General Electric (GE) were analyzed by the modified COBRA-IV-I code. The analysis indicates that the equal volume exchange turbulent mixing model with void drift predicts the observed two-phase flow data trends better than the equal mass exchange model, and to predict the correct data trends a more physically based void drift model need to be developed.

  • In this study, the applicability of $CaCO_3$ as a seed material for crystallization reaction was tested. $CaCO_3$ was ground to lesser than 425 mesh and was made to media mixed with binder. Batch experiment was to investigate the ${PO_4}^{3-}-P$ removal efficiency of different parameters such as $CaCO_3$ dosage and binder ratio, size, type and mass of media. In addition, the effect of phosphorus removal from wastewater was tested using a lab-scaled crystallization reactor. At the results of the batch test, phosphorus removals were improved with increasing $CaCO_3$ dosage and media mass but were decreased with increasing media size. Moreover, phosphorus removals were influenced by specific surface area but media type. The average T-P and ${PO_4}^{3-}-P$ removal efficiency in a lab-scaled crystallization reactor with $CaCO_3$ media for wastewater were shown to be 60.2% and 60.3% for 18 days of operation time.
