  • It is one of the most critical steps identifying impaired waterbodies exactly in the selection of target water quality indicators for the management of Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs). Excess ratio and excess level were applied and analyzed by the stream zone basis in order to evaluate water impairment for Nakdong, Geum, Youngsan and Seomjin rivers. Each river basin was divided into stream zones in the light of its watershed and waterbody characteristics. Selected water quality parameters discussed in this study were pH, DO, BOD, COD, SS, T-P, T-Coli and F-Coli. The excess ratios of the water quality parameters were used to discriminate water bodies that did not meet water quality standards. The excess levels were used to classify the degradation of water quality. The excess ratios and the excess levels to the water quality criteria of the medium influence areas were used for each stream zone. The results indicate that the excess ratios and the excess levels are varied on the stream zone in each river basin. Three parameters, pH, DO and SS, met water quality standards in all stream zones. The other five parameters indicated very high excess ratios in most waterbodies, and especially T-P and T-Coli revealed to be very high excess levels in some waterbodies. These parameters could be considered as major target indicators for the management of TMDLs.

  • Phenomena of hydraulic transient such as water hammer should be analyzed to design the pipeline systems effectively in dam. Surge tanks generally are used to reduce change in pressure caused by hydraulic transient from load changes on the turbines. In this study, the appropriate scale of surge tank with chamber is investigated for dam safety management. The variation of water level in the surge tank are computed using governing equation. Using the Thoma-Jaeger's stability condition, static and dynamic stability are investigate for the cases of flood water level, normal high water level, rated water level and low water level. Finally appropriate diameters of shaft and chamber are determined in the surge tank with chamber.

  • Due to the climate changes in Korea, the numbers of both torrential rain events and drought periods have increased in frequency. Water management practice against water shortage and flooding is one of the key interesting for field crop cultivation, and groundwater often serves as an important and safe source of water to crops. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of groundwater table levels on soil water content and soybean development under two different textured soils. The experiment was conducted using lysimeter located in Miryang, Korea. Two types of soils (sandy-loam and silty-loam) were used with three groundwater table levels (0.2, 0.4, 0.6m). Mean soil water content during the soybean growth period was significantly influenced by groundwater table levels. With the continuous groundwater level at 0.2m from the soil surface, soil water content was not statistically changed between vegetative and reproductive stage, but the 0.4 and 0.6m groundwater table level was significantly decreased. Lower chlorophyll content in soybean leaves was found in shallow water table treatment in earlier part of the growing season, but the chlorophyll contents were non-significant among water table treatments. Groundwater table level treatments were significantly influenced on plant available nitrogen content in surface soil. The highest N contents were observed in 0.6m groundwater table level. It is probably due to the nitrogen loss by denitrification as the result of high soil water content. The length and dry weight of primary root was influenced by groundwater level and thus the highest length and dry weight of root were observed in 0.6m water table level. This result showed that soybean root growth did not extend below the groundwater level and increased with the depth of groundwater table level. The results of this study show that the management of groundwater level can influence on soil characteristics, especially on soil water content, and it is an important practice of to reduce yield loss caused by the water stress during the crop growing season.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the management water level of an estuary reservoir considering three aspects: the water use, flood control and water quality, and to use a robust decision-making to consider uncertainty due to climate change. The watershed-reservoir linkage model was used to simulate changes in inflow due to climate change, and changes in reservoir water level and water quality. Five management level alternatives ranging from -1.7 El.m to 0.2 El.m were evaluated under the SSP1, 2, 3, and 5 scenariosof the ACCESS-CM2 Global Climate Model. Performance indicators based on period-reliability were calculated for robust decision-making considering the three aspects, and regret was used as a decision indicator to identify the alternatives with the minimum maximum regret. Flood control failure increased as the management level increased, while the probability of water use failure increased as the management level decreased. The highest number of failures occurred under the SSP5 scenario. In the water quality sector, the change in water quality was relatively small with an increase in the management level due to the increase in reservoir volume. Conversely, a decrease in the management level resulted in a more significant change in water quality. In the study area, the estuary reservoir was found to be problematic when the change in water quality was small, resulting in more failures.

  • In this study, management index method has been developed to estimate the level of deterioration, applied to Cheongju city, and compared with the previous estimation methods of deterioration level of water distribution system. From the results, distribution systems of Yullyang, Naedeok1 and Yongam2 are found to be seriously deteriorated. And it was also found that probability of pipe breakage was estimated as 3.21%, 4.64% which is highest level at the steel pipe of 200 mm and 300 mm diameter. It was found that risk degree was estimated as 0.2609, 0.2644 by using management index method in Naedeok1 which is the most dangerous distribution system in the city. It was also found that results of risk analysis by management index method have been similar with the results of safety analysis by reliability method and indirect estimation method of deterioration level. Therefore, newly developed management index method can be applied and may be useful to the estimation of deterioration level for the future maintenance and management of water distribution system.

  • Demand side management(DSM) is the newly raised issues in the water resources management in recent. Many of the policy tools among demand management, the most important measures might be a pricing system. Furthermore, the responses of consumers on the price for water consumption level is the key factor for policy making. Here, we estimated panel data for 167 regions and over 7 years periods in Korea. Compare to other previous studies the price elasticities were somewhat low. The estimated price elasticity was -0.05. It was because the short term estimated period may derive lower elasticities. However, it might be a recent trend after the continuous increment of water pricing and consumers not willing to decrease their residential water consumption with increasing water pricing. According to this results, water saving effect might be much smaller than we expect with pricing policy. However, It does not imply there is no price effects on water consumption and it's still meaningful as a tool of water management.

  • The Tonle Sap, Cambodia, is a huge lake and periodically flooded due to monsoon climate. The incoming water causes intensive flooding that expands the lake over vast floodplain and wetland consisting mainly of forests and shrubs. Monitoring the water-level change over the floodplain is essential for flood prediction and water resource management. A main objective of this study is flood monitoring over Tonle Sap area using ALOS PALSAR. To study double-bounce effects in the lake, backscattering effect using ALOS PALSAR dual-polarization (HH, HV) data was examined. InSAR technique was applied for detection of water-level change. HH-polarization interferometric pairs between wet and dry seasons were best to measure water level change around northwestern parts of Tonle Sap. The seasonal pattern of water-level variations in Tonle Sap studied by InSAR method is similar to the past and altimeter data. However, water level variation measured by SAR was much smaller than that by altimeter because the DInSAR measurement only represents water level change at a given region of floodplain while altimeter provides water level variation at the central parts of the lake.

  • Large dams are managed with operation standard and flood forecasting systems, while small dams do not have management method generally. Shortage of water resources and natural disasters due to drought and flood raised public concerns for management of small dams. Most of small dams are irrigation dams, which need diversified water uses. However, the lack of systematic management of small dams have caused serious water wastage and increased natural disasters. Storage management method and system were developed to solve these problems in small dams. The system was applied to Seongju dam for effective management. The storage management method was established considering hydrology simulation and statistical analysis using the system. This method can bring additional available water, even in the same conditions of the water demand and the supply conditions of watershed. It can improve the flood control capacity and water utilization efficiency by' the flexible operation of storage space.
