  • The interfacial transition zone(ITZ) which is the boundary layer between cement composites and aggregates is considered to be the region of gradual transition, heterogeneous, and the weakest part of concrete. For the development of lightweight high strength concrete, it is essential to evaluate the mechanical properties of ITZ between high strength concrete with low water-binder ratio and lightweight aggregates. However, the mechanical properties of ITZ are not well established due to its high porosity and complex structure. Furthermore, the properties of ITZ in concrete using lightweight aggregates are dominated by more various variations (e.g. water-binder ratio, water absorption capacity of aggregate, curing conditions) than normal-weight aggregate concrete. This study aims to elucidate the mechanical properties of ITZ in lightweight high-strength cement composites according to the types of aggregates and the aggregate sizes. Nanoindentation analysis was used to evaluate the elastic modulus of ITZ between high strength cement composites with the water-binder ratio of 0.2 and normal sand, lightweight aggregate with different aggregate siz es of 2mm and 5mm in this study.

  • Tendon reinforced cemented soil is applied extensively in foundation stabilisation and improvement, especially in areas with soft clay. To solve the deterioration problem led by steel corrosion, the glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) tendon is introduced to substitute the traditional steel tendon. The interface bond strength between the cemented soil matrix and GFRP tendon demonstrates the outstanding mechanical property of this composite. However, the lack of research between the influence factors and bond strength hinders the application. To evaluate these factors, back propagation neural network (BPNN) is applied to predict the relationship between them and bond strength. Since adjusting BPNN parameters is time-consuming and laborious, the particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithm is proposed. This study evaluated the influence of water content, cement content, curing time, and slip distance on the bond performance of GFRP tendon-reinforced cemented soils (GTRCS). The results showed that the ultimate and residual bond strengths were both in positive proportion to cement content and negative to water content. The sample cured for 28 days with 30% water content and 50% cement content had the largest ultimate strength (3879.40 kPa). The PSO-BPNN model was tuned with 3 neurons in the input layer, 10 in the hidden layer, and 1 in the output layer. It showed outstanding performance on a large database comprising 405 testing results. Its higher correlation coefficient (0.908) and lower root-mean-square error (239.11 kPa) were obtained compared to multiple linear regression (MLR) and logistic regression (LR). In addition, a sensitivity analysis was applied to acquire the ranking of the input variables. The results illustrated that the cement content performed the strongest influence on bond strength, followed by the water content and slip displacement.

  • In this study, the effect of two types of aggregates (fly ash aggregate and shale aggregate) on the density, strength, and durability of preplaced lightweight aggregate concrete (PLWAC) was studied. The results showed that the 7 - 28 days strength of concrete prepared with fly ash aggregates (high water absorption rate) significantly increased, which could attribute to the long-term water release of fly ash aggregates by the refined pore structure. In contrast, the strength increase of concrete prepared with shale aggregates (low water absorption rate) is not apparent. Although PLWAC prepared with fly ash aggregates has a lower density and higher strength (56.8 MPa @ 1600 kg/m3), the chloride diffusion coefficient is relatively high, which could attribute to the diffusion paths established by connected porous aggregates and the negative over-curing effect. Compared to the control group, the partial replacement of fly ash aggregates (30%) with asphalt emulsion (20% solid content) coated aggregates can reduce the chloride diffusion coefficient of concrete by 53.6% while increasing the peak load obtained in a three-point bending test by 107.3%, fracture energy by 30.3% and characteristic length by 103.5%. The improvement in concrete performance could be attributed to the reduction in the water absorption rate of aggregates and increased energy absorption by polymer during crack propagation.

  • The purpose of this study was to measure and compare the amount of unreacted TEGDMA from pit and fissure sealants cured with three different light sources; conventional halogen light curing unit, plasma arc light curing unit and argon laser. The specimens were eluted in distilled water for different time intervals. The time-related release of TEGDMA were analyzed by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC). The result of present study can be summarized as follows: 1. The time-related release of TEGDMA decreased with increasing curing time in conventional halogen light, however, that not statistically significant difference(p>0.05). 2. The elution from the specimens cured for 6 and 9 seconds with plasma arc light was similar results corresponding with the time-related TEGBMA release, and was significantly lower than that cured for 3 seconds(p<0.05). 3. The elution of TEGDMA from the specimens cured with argon laser was significantly higher than that cured with halogen and plasma arc light(p<0.05). 4. The elution of TEGDMA from under recommended time of three different light sources were showed to be no statistically significant difference(p>0.05). 5. In time-related release of TEGDMA from recommended time of each light sources, the results correspond to 40 seconds of halogen light and 6 seconds of plasma arc light were similar(p>0.05). 6. The elution of TEGDMA, from over recommended time of three different light sources were showed to be no statistically significant difference(p>0.05). In this study, I suggest that curing time of plasma arc light is 6 and/or 9 seconds in the field of clinical pediatric dentistry claiming its effectiveness in optimal polymerization and reduced chair time.

  • Each of the three cationized compounds synthesized previously, poly(OMA-co-DAMA)[PODC], poly(DMA-co-DAMA)[PDDC] and poly(EMA-co-DAMA)[PEDC] was blended with waxes, emulsifiers and cationized fatty carbamide(ODTCC) synthesized in this study for the preparation of some durable softening water-repellenting agents, PODCW, PDDCW and PEDCW. The results of washability, tearing strength, crease recovery and contact angle of the cotton fabrics treated with PODCW, PDDCW and PEDCW with and without textile finishing resin, showed remarkable improvement of the physical properties. Rating of water repellency of cotton fabric treated with PODCW was 80, but those treated with PDDCW and PEDCW were not high enough to use in industry. Proper curing temperature of the synthesized water-repelleting agents was $140^{\circ}C$; proper using concentration was 3wt%; sodium acetate was the best catalyst for water-repellenting agents among the used, and proper concentration was 0.6wt%. From the results of reaction mechanism of cellulosic fiber with water-repellenting agent and washability of the fibers treated with water-repellenting agents the prepared water-repellenting agent proved to be durable. Surface structures of cotton fabrics treated with water-repellenting agent were investigated by SEM.

  • Recently, in many laboratories and institutes it is being studied on the high flowing concrete widely, which has high fluidity, non-segregation ability and fillingability, and sometimes being applied to the construction field actually. And the fluidity properties of high flowing concrete are influenced according to the several factors ; binder content, water/binder ratio and water content etc. This is an experimental study to compare and analyze the effect of water/binder ratio and water content on the properties of high flowing concrete. For this purpose, the mix proportion of high flowing concrete according to water/binder ratio(W/B : 0.30, 0.35, 0.40, 0.45) and water content (W : 155, 165, 175, 185 kg/㎥) was selected. And then slump-flow, V-lot, L-passing test in fresh concrete, and compressive strength, freezing and thawing test in hardened concrete were peformed. According to test results, it was found that the viscosity of all those high flowing concrete with the water content 175 kg/㎥ was satisfied with 50 cm pass time of slump flow prescribed by Japanese Architectural Standard Specification (JASS 5) - from 3 to 8 seconds. And non-segregation ability of concrete with W/B 0.35 was better than the other mix proportions. Especially, the compressive strength after curing 24 hours(1 day) of all high flowing concrete was higher than that prescribed by JASS 5(50 kgf/㎠).

  • Artificial lightweight aggregates and solids were manufactured with coal ash(fly ash, bottom ash). In order to apply alkali-activated coal ash(fly ash, bottom ash) artificial lightweight aggregate to concrete, several experimental studies were performed. Thus, it can be noticed the optimal mix proportion, basic characteristies, mechanical properties and environmental safety of alkali-activated coal ash(fly ash, bottom ash) solid and alkali-activated coal ash(fly ash, bottom ash) artificial lightweight aggregate. Also, the freezing-thawing test property of concrete using the alkali-activated coal ash(fly ash, bottom ash) artificial lightweight aggregate was investigated. As a result, the optimal mixing proportion of coal ash(fly ash, bottom ash) solid to make alkali-activated artificial lightweight aggregates was cement $10\%$, water glass $15\%$, NaOH $10\%$, $MnO_2\;5\%$. Alkali-activated coal ash(fly ash, bottom ash) solid can achieve compressive strength of 36.4 MPa, at 7-days, after the paste was cured at air curing after moist curing during 24 hours in $50^{\circ}C$. Alkali-activated coal ash(fly ash, bottom ash) artificial lightweight aggregate that do impregnation to polymer was improved $10\%$ crushing strength $150\%$, and was available to concrete.

  • This research investigates the influence of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) composition on the alkali-activated slag cement (AASC). Aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$) was added to GGBFS binder between 2% and 16% by weight. The alkaline activators KOH (potassium hydroxide) was used and the water to binder ratio of 0.50. The strength development results indicate that increasing the amount of $Al_2O_3$ enhanced hydration. The 2M KOH + 16% $Al_2O_3$ and 4M KOH + 16% $Al_2O_3$ specimens had the highest strength, with an average of 30.8 MPa and 45.2 MPa, after curing for 28days. The strength at 28days of 2M KOH + 16% $Al_2O_3$ was 46% higher than that of 2M KOH (without $Al_2O_3$). Also, the strength at 28days of 4M KOH + 16% $Al_2O_3$ was 44% higher than that of 4M KOH (without $Al_2O_3$). Increase the $Al_2O_3$ contents of the binder results in the strength development at all curing ages. The incorporation of AASC tended to increases the ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) due to the similar effects of strength, but increasing the amount of $Al_2O_3$ adversely decreases the water absorption and porosity. Higher addition of $Al_2O_3$ in the specimens increases the Al/Ca and Al/Si in the hydrated products. SEM and EDX analyses show that the formation of much denser microstructures with $Al_2O_3$ addition.

  • In this research, a small-scaled laboratory test and FEM analysis have been carried out to evaluate the feasibility of field construction with couple of recycled materials, such as in-situ soil, water-treatment sludge, and crumb rubbers. A static loading, which simulates the real traffic load, was adopted in lab test. The test was carried out, according to simulated field construction stages, such as excavation, bedding materials and pipe installation, placing and curing of controlled low strength materials, and simulated traffic loading. Couple of measuring instruments were adopted. The maximum vertical and horizontal deformations were 0.83% and 1.09%, during placing the CLSM. The measured vertical and horizontal deformations with curing time were 0.603mm and 0.676mm, respectively. The reduction effect of vertical and lateral earth pressure was relatively big. Also, FEM analysis was carried out to get the deformation, earth pressure and strain of PVC with different Controlled Low Strength Materials(CLSM) materials.

  • The change of three different reagents for electrical conductive paint using aircraft coating with elapsing time of exposure to different condition was investigated. Three different reagents were poured into the vial bottles, stored in air condition and room temperature and observed with elapsing days. In addition, adhesion property of paint was tried using cross cut tape test after storage of $N_2$ atmosphere. The weight of each different reagent was measured along with elapsing time. To confirm the change of chemical component with exposure of air atmosphere, FT-IR was performed. The weight of part A and Part B decreased slightly whereas the weight of part C decreased rapidly and the precipitation was remained. The part B was cured after exposure of $N_2$ atmosphere and the 2250 cm-1 from FT-IR peak decreased slowly at the same time. It was considered that the water contained in air accelerated the reaction of -NCO functional groups and it caused the curing whereas $N_2$ atmosphere not contained water and it resulted in the retardancy of curing.
