In this study, we developed an experimental method of the Charles' law applicable to school. Science textbooks and literatures on this principle were analyzed to extract factors utilized in organizing the experimental setup and method. A combined structure such as with a vial and a glass tube, the former of which is for deciding the total volume and the latter of which is for easy measurement of volume, was better in measurement of volume with temperature rather than a simple structure such as syringe. Use of graduated cylinder as a water bath to control the temperature showed advantage in cooling time than using other bath of larger volume such as a beaker. A liquid drop was used as a plug in the glass tube. This plug has little resistance with the glass wall when the gas volume changes. Water as a liquid drop in the glass tube had a significant effect in volume change of gas due to evaporation, especially in the beginning of the measurement. Glycerol showing negligible effect in volume change was used. This method took about one hour and produced a good linear relationship between the temperature and volume of gas with $R^2$ = 0.999 and absolute zero temperature = $-216.7\;{^{\circ}C}$. The Charles' law experiment developed in this study can be performed with appropriate adjustment of procedure considering the purpose of the curriculum of science and chemistry subject at each school level.

Temporal and spatial variations of temperature and salinity around Ganjeol Point during January, April, August and November 2011 were studied using the data from CTD observations and temperature monitoring buoys deployed at 20 stations in the southeast coast of Korea. Temperature and salinity were nearly homogeneous through the whole depth by mixing of the seawater in spring and winter related to the sea surface cooling. Stratification induced by the river runoff and the bottom cold water was clear in summer. In autumn, sea water had vertical mixing initiated from surface layer and weak stratification at the middle and bottom layers. Low temperature and high salinity emerged throughout the year near Ganjeol Point, which inferred from turbulent mixing and upwelling by its topographical effect. Major periods of 1/4~1.4 day temperature fluctuations were recorded for the most part of the stations. According to the cross spectral density analysis, high coherence and small time lag for temperature fluctuation between layers were shown at Ganjeol Point. However, those features at the northen area of Hoeya river were opposed to Ganjeol Point. From analyses, thermohaline structure and its fluctuation around Ganjeol Point were characterized into those three parts, the south of Ganjeol Point, Ganjeol Point and the north of Ganjeol Point.
A high airtightness is required for the residential spaces constructed recently to save cooling and heating energy through improving insulation performance. Because the chances to release steam formed by human activity in building and inflow of water vapor in outdoor air to residential space are reduced, the natural humidity control performance of interior materials has become more important. In this study, hygroscopic performance of thermo-physically treated wood (Pinus koraiensis) was estimated. At various relative humidity condition, the water vapor adsorption and desorption rates of wooden materials were measured as well as equilibrium moisture content. Effects of roughness and surface microstructure as physical factors and functional groups as chemical factors on the hygroscopicity were analyzed. It is expected that the results from this study and further study of measuring moisture generation in residential spaces could contribute to install a system for evaluating the hygrothermal performance of wooden building.
Mesothermal gold deposits of the Heungdeok, Daewon and Ilsaeng mines in the Youngdong area occur in fault shear zones in Precambrian metamorphic rocks of central Sobaegsan Massif, Korea, and formed in single stage of massive quartz veins (0.3 to 3 m thick). Ore mineralogy is simple, consisting dominantly of pyrrhotite, sphalerite and galena with subordinate pyrite, chalcopyrite, electrum, tetrahedrite and native bismuth. Fluid inclusion data indicate that hydrothermal mineralization occurred at high temperatures (>240$^{\circ}$ to 400$^{\circ}$C) from $H_{2}O-CO_{2}(-CH_{4})$-NaCI fluids with salinities less than 12 wt. % equiv. NaC!. Fluid inclusions in vein quartz comprise two main types. These are, in decreasing order of abundance, type I (aqueous liquid-rich) and type II (carbonic). Volumetric proportion of the carbonic phase in type II inclusions varies widely in a single quartz grain. Estimated $CH_4$ contents in the carbonic phase of type II inclusions are 2 to 20 mole %. Relationship between homogenization temperature and salinity of fluid inclusions suggests a complex history of fluid evolution, comprising the early fluid's unmixing accompanying $CO_2$ effervescence and later cooling. Estimated pressures of vein filling are at least 2 kbars. The ore mineralization formed from a magmatic fluid with the ${\delta}^{34}S_{{\Sigma}S}$, ${\delta}^{18}O_{water}$ and ${\delta}D_{water}$ values of -2.1 to 2.2$\textperthousand$, 4.7 to 9.3$\textperthousand$ and -63 to -79$\textperthousand$, respectively. This study validates the application of a magmatic model for the genesis of mesothermal gold deposits in Youngdong area.
When reactor coolant leaks occur due to cracks of a steam generator's tube, radioactive materials contained in the primary cooling water in nuclear power plant are forced out toward the secondary systems. At this time the secondary water purification resin in the ion exchange resin tower of the steam generator blowdown system is contaminated by the radioactivity of the leaked radioactive materials, so we pack this in special containers and store temporarily because we could not dispose it by ourselves. If steam generator tube leakage occurs, it produces contaminated spent resins annually about 5,000~7,000 liters. This may increase the amount of nuclear waste productions, a disposal working cost and a unit price of generating electricity in the plant. For this reasons, it is required to develop a decontamination process technique for reducing the radioactive level of these resins enough to handle by the self-disposal method. In this research, First, Investigated the structure and properties of the ion exchange resin used in a steam generator blowdown system. Second, Checked for a occurrence status of contaminated spent resin and a disposal technology. Third, identified the chemical characteristics of the waste radionuclides of the spent resin, and examined ionic bonding and separation mechanism of radioactive nuclear species and a spent resin. Finally, we carried out the decontamination experiment using chemicals, ultrasound, microbubbles, supercritical carbon dioxide to process these spent resin. In the case of the spent resin decontamination method using chemicals, the higher the concentration of the drug decontamination efficiency was higher. In the ultrasound method, foreign matter of the spent resin was removed and was found that the level of radioactivity is below of the MDA. In the microbubbles method, we found that the concentration of the radioactivity decreased after the experiment, so it can be used to the decontamination process of the spent resin. In supercritical carbon dioxide method, we found that it also had a high decontamination efficiency. According to the results of these experiments, almost all decontamination method had a high efficiency, but considering the amounts of the secondary waste productions and work environment of the nuclear power plant, we judged the ultrasound and supercritical carbon dioxide method are suitable for application to the plant and we established the plant applicable decontamination process system on the basis of these two methods.
Quality changes in fresh-cut potatoes during storage at $4^{\circ}C$ after treatment with low-temperature blanching and antibrowning agents were studied. Fresh-cut potatoes were treated by dipping for 1.5 min in a browning inhibitor solution containing 0.5% (w/v) ascorbic acid, 0.5% (w/v) citric acid, 0.5% (w/v) sodium chloride, 0.1% (w/v) trehalose, and 0.005% (w/v) biotin, at $60^{\circ}C$, with subsequent cooling for 1.5 min and storage at $4^{\circ}C$. The browning properties of fresh-cut potatoes were examined by measurement of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity and total phenolic content. Changes in quality attributes over a 14-day period were assessed in terms of titratable acidity, pH, water-soluble solid level, and gas analysis at $4^{\circ}C$. During storage, PPO activity increased, with the lowest activity seen after about 7 days of storage. Treatment with antibrowning solution at $4^{\circ}C$ increased visual sensory attributes during storage. Low-temperature blanching in distilled water more effectively inhibited browning compared with exposure to browning inhibitor solution, as assessed after 7 days of storage. Fresh-cut potatoes respired aerobically after different treatments during storage at $4^{\circ}C$.
With the recent increase in maintenance works on water and sewer pipes as well as district heating supply pipes, pavement cutting work using pavement cutter is on the rise. The pavement cutting operation generates considerable dust (cutting sludge) as well as noise; therefore, it is necessary to apply eco-friendly technologies that have low noise and dust recovery capability. Thus far, various equipment for recovering dust have been developed; however, there is a limitation in that the environmental friendliness is not quantified. Therefore, in this study, we developed a low-noise, dust-recovery type pavement cutter that can fundamentally remove the causes of environmental hazards such as noise and dust and evaluated the eco-friendliness of the pavement cutting process performed by this cutter. To this end, an integrated water cooling-sludge recovery system composed of a vacuum device and a sludge suction unit was developed, and the developed system was applied to a pavement cutter. Subsequently, the developed equipment was applied to the test bed, and data related to its eco-friendliness were collected and evaluated. The results showed that the cutting sludge recovery rate of the developed equipment was greater than 83%, the noise level was approximately 82 - 83 dB, and the sound power level was 115 dB. The results of this study will be used as basic data to develop improved pavement cutters in the future with improved cutting sludge recovery performance and lower noise.

The texturization characteristics of textured vegetable protein (TVP) were investigated based on the extent of soybean decoating during the pretreatment of defatted soybean flour used for TVP. The raw materials for TVP consisted of 50% defatted soybean flour, 30% gluten, and 20% corn starch. The weight ratios of soybean seed coat to soybean flour were 9%, 6%, 3%, and zero. Extrusion was performed using an extruder equipped with a cooling die, maintaining a barrel temperature of 190℃ and screw speed of 250 rpm, Water was injected at a rate of 9 rpm using a metering pump. Regarding the textures of the extruded TVPs produced from defatted soybean flour, an increase in the soybean seed coat content led to a decrease in the apparent fibrous structural layer and an increase in hardness. However, there were no significant changes in elasticity and cohesion. Moreover, as the soybean seed coat content increased, the pH of TVPs decreased. A higher soybean seed coat content also tended to lower the moisture content, increasing water absorption, solids elution, and turbidity. These results suggest that an increased seed coat content reduces the proportion of protein, and the fibers present in the seed coats prevent texturization.
Nuclear accidents such as Fukushima Daiichi have highlighted the potential of passive safety systems to replace or complement active safety systems as part of the overall prevention and/or mitigation strategies. In addition, passive systems are key features of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), for which they are becoming almost unavoidable and are part of the basic design of many reactors available in today's nuclear market. Nevertheless, their potential to significantly increase the safety of nuclear power plants still needs to be strengthened, in particular the ability of computer codes to determine their performance and reliability in industrial applications and support the safety demonstration. The PASTELS project (September 2020-February 2024), funded by the European Commission "Euratom H2020" programme, is devoted to the study of passive systems relying on natural circulation. The project focuses on two types, namely the SAfety COndenser (SACO) for the evacuation of the core residual power and the Containment Wall Condenser (CWC) for the reduction of heat and pressure in the containment vessel in case of accident. A specific design for each of these systems is being investigated in the project. Firstly, a straight vertical pool type of SACO has been implemented on the Framatome's PKL loop at Erlangen. It represents a tube bundle type heat exchanger that transfers heat from the secondary circuit to the water pool in which it is immersed by condensing the vapour generated in the steam generator. Secondly, the project relies on the CWC installed on the PASI test loop at LUT University in Finland. This facility reproduces the thermal-hydraulic behaviour of a Passive Containment Cooling System (PCCS) mainly composed of a CWC, a heat exchanger in the containment vessel connected to a water tank at atmospheric pressure outside the vessel which represents the ultimate heat sink. Several activities are carried out within the framework of the project. Different tests are conducted on these integral test facilities to produce new and relevant experimental data allowing to better characterize the physical behaviours and the performances of these systems for various thermo-hydraulic conditions. These test programmes are simulated by different codes acting at different scales, mainly system and CFD codes. New "system/CFD" coupling approaches are also considered to evaluate their potential to benefit both from the accuracy of CFD in regions where local 3D effects are dominant and system codes whose computational speed, robustness and general level of physical validation are particularly appreciated in industrial studies. In parallel, the project includes the study of single and two-phase natural circulation loops through a bibliographical study and the simulations of the PERSEO and HERO-2 experimental facilities. After a synthetic presentation of the project and its objectives, this article provides the reader with findings related to the physical analysis of the test results obtained on the PKL and PASI installations as well an overall evaluation of the capability of the different numerical tools to simulate passive systems.
Lead and zinc mineralization of the Kwangsin mine was formed in quartz and carbonate veins that filled fault-related fractures in the limestone-rich Samtaesan Formation of the Chosun Supergroup and the phyllite-rich Suchangni Formation of unknown age. A K-Ar date of alteration sericite indicates that the Pb-Zn mineralization took place during Late Cretaceous (83.5 Ma), genetically in relation to the cooling of the nearby Muamsa Granite (83~87 Ma). Mineral paragenesis can be divided into three stages (I, II, III): (I) the deposition of barren massive white quartz, (II) the main Pb-Zn mineralization with deposition of white crystalline quartz and/or carbonates (rhodochrosite and dolomite), and (III) the deposition of post-ore barren calcite. Mineralogic and fluid inclusion data indicate that lead-zinc minerals in middle stage II (IIb) were deposited at temperatures between $182^{\circ}$ and $276^{\circ}C$ from fluids with salinities of 2.7 to 5.4 wt. % equiv. NaCl and with log $fs_2$ values of -15.5 to -11.8 atm. The relationship between homogenization temperature and salinity data indicates that lead-zinc deposition was a result of fluid boiling and later meteoric water mixing. Ore mineralization occurred at depths of about 600 to 700 m. Sulfur isotope compositions of sulfide minerals (${\delta}^{34}S_{CDT}=9.0{\sim}14.5$ ‰) indicate a relatively high ${\delta}^{34}S_{{\Sigma}S}$ value of ore fluids (up to 14 ‰), likely indicating an igneous source of sulfur largely mixed with an isotopically heavier sulfur source (possibly sulfates in surrounding sedimentary rocks). There is a remarkable decrease of calculated ${\delta}^{18}O$ value of water in hydrothermal fluids with increasing paragenetic time: stage I, 14.6~10.1 ‰; stage IIa, 5.8~2.2 ‰; stage IIb, 0.8~2.0 ‰; stage IIc, -6.1~-6.8 ‰, This indicates a progressive increase of meteoric water influx in the hydrothermal system at Kwangsin. Measured and calculated hydrogen and oxygen isotope values indicate that the Kwangsin hydrothermal fluids was formed from a circulating (due to intrusion of the Muamsa Granite) meteoric waters which evolved through interaction mainly with the Samtaesan Formation (${\delta}^{18}O=20.1$ to 24.9 ‰) under low water/rock ratios.
