The leaf water relations and photosynthetic rate during acute soil drying were compared in potgrown grapevine cultivars, Vitis vinifera cv. Chardonnay and V. vinifera cv. Riesling. Leaf water potential in Riesling decreased significantly from day 2 after water had been withheld, while in Chardonnay leaf water potential for the water-stressed plants was almost identical with that in well watered plants during the first 4 days. Higher stomatal conductance and photosynthetic rate in Chardonnay than Riesling were observed until day 3 after withholding water. Photosynthetic rate in water-stressed Chardonnay was not different from that in control plants until day 3 after withholding water, while that in water-stressed Riesling was reduced markedly from day 2. In Riesling, osmotic potential at turgor loss point was not changed irrespective of watering conditions. However, in Chardonnay osmotic potential at turgor loss point decreased more in the water stressed conditions than in well watered conditions. The osmotic adjustment in Chardonnay under water stress conditions must contribute to the maintenance of higher stomatal conductance and photosynthetic rate than those in Riesling for a significant period of the drying process. Though difference in stomatal conductance between the two cultivars was shown in the process of soil drying, stomatal conductance of both cultivars responded to vapor pressure difference between leaf and ambient air, rather than soil water status and leaf water potential.
The diurnal changes of the stomatal conductance, transpiration and leaf water potential were measured in order to assess the water relations characteristics of Pueraria thunbergiana in August of 1995 and 1996. The results showed two different responses depending on the duration of rainless days. The microclimatic conditions were highly stressful on 2 August. Daily maximum temperature reached to $39.0{\circ}C$ and vapor pressure deficit was 3.55 KPa. During this time the leaf water potential decreased to -1.02 MPa and a marked reduction of stomatal conductance was shown. However, on 15 August the stomatal conductance increased with increment of photon flux density, and transpiration was highly maintained during the day time. Minimum leaf water potential was only -0.47 MPa in spite of high transpiration rate. Furthermore, on 15 August reduced leaf water potential during the day time was recovered rapidly with decrease of photon flux density, whereas recovery of leaf water potential on 2 August was delayed. However, reduced leaf water potential on 2 August was recovered untile the next dawn. Osmotic potential at turgor loss point of Pueraria thunbergiana on 2, 3 and 15 August was -1.79, -1.70 and -1.60 MPa, respectively. The vapor pressure deficit is more contributive to the regulation of stomatal conductance than leaf water potential.
This study was conducted to investigate the influence of soil moisture on the photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, leaf water content and its any correlation in soybean. Followings were achieved as a conclusion. At the soil moisture was moved from drought condition to saturation condition, the photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance and leaf water content were gradually increased on the period of re-watering treatment. The recovery of photosynthetic rate was faster than others. There were positive correlation with the photosynthetic rate and leaf water content, the stomatal conductance and leaf water content, the photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance respectively, but the correlation coefficient of photosynthetic rate and leaf water content was high.
The soil moisture content and its relation to plants may be important in determining the crop growth and yield. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the leaf water potential and photosynthetic activity in soybean plants as affected by the timing of soil water stress. The soybean variety, 'Tachinagaha', was grown in a pot. The 15 day-old seedlings were subject to the three levels of soil moisture content(25, 40 and 55%) for 25 days. Then the treated soybean plants were placed again at the level of 25% soil moisture content for 25 days, and were compared with the control which was well-watered at 40% level for whole growth period. Soybean plants grown under continuous drought showed higher apparent photosynthetic rate(AP) than those under well-watering /drought in the first /second water treatment, suggesting that AP was adjusted after previous acclimation to drought. Over a wide range of photosynthetic photon flux densities(PPFD), drought or excessive water stress resulted in the decrease in AP when compared with the control. AP and stomatal conductance were decreased in soybean plants subject to water deficit stress, suggesting that AP and stomatal conductance were more sensitive to drought than excessive water stress.
Six barley varieties that showed different degree of drought tolerance were grown with and without drought stress treatment (control), and investigated for the temporal changes in growth and several physiological traits after drought treatment. Soil water potential was -0.05 ㎫ at the initial stage of drought treatment and dropped to -0.29 ㎫ at 19 days after withholding irrigation. Soil water potential (SWP) maintained at -0.05 ㎫ in the control. The dry weight (DW) under the drought treatment were reduced compared to the control as follows: Dicktoo-S (short awn), 69% ; Dicktoo-L (long awn), 70%; Dicktoo-T (tetra), 86%; Dongbori-1, 69%; Suwonssalbori-365, 55% and Tapgolbori, ,37%. Dicktoo lines and Dongbori-1 were more tolerant than Suwonssalbori-365 and Tapgolbori. Leaf relative water contents (RWC) and leaf water potential (LWP) decreased obviously under the drought condition, the decrease being greater especially in the less drought-tolerant barley genotypes. Dongbori-1 and Dicktoo-L in drought treatment showed net photosynthesis of 38% and 17% compared to the control, respectively, and the other four genotypes much lower photosynthesis of 1.1% to 7.0%. Stomatal conductance, mesophyll conductance, and the photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) of PS II were reduced by drought treatment, the reduction being greater in drought-sensitive genotypes. The drought-tolerant genotypes had greater osmotic adjustment (OA) capacity under water stress. Thus, the decrease of RWC and LWP was lower and the turgor pressure conservation capacity was higher under water stress in drought-tolerant genotypes. Drought-tolerant genotypes showed less decrease of photosynthesis because stomatal conductance, mesophyll conductance and the ratio (Fv/Fm) of the variable to maximal fluorescence of drought-resistant genotype was decreased less in the drought stress condition. In conclusion, the drought-tolerant genotypes had better water conservation capacity through efficient OA, and this led to the lower decrease of photosynthesis and growth in water stress condition.

The heat-pipe is characterised by the highly effective thermal conductance. In order to change the thermal conductance, the heat-pipe is connected to a reservior having a space which is filled with non-condensable gas. In normal operation, the vapour of working fluid will tend to pump the non- condensable gas into the reservoir and the gas-vapour interface situates at some point along the condenser section. The thermal conductance is affected by non- condensable gas. It is concluded that the suitable position of interface can be used to control the temperature of condenser section. In this experiment, the evaporating part is connected to the lowest position of heat-pipe. The copper heat-pipe which is filled with Freon-113 or distilled water as working fluid utilized. As results of experimental study, thermal conductance can be increased by the operating pressure which is infulenced by non-condensable gas. A correlative equation between the thermal conductance and the mass of non- condensable gas is also obtained.
Diurnal changes of microclimatic conditions and tissue water relations were measured at two sites where Carpinus laxiflora and C. cordata were allopatrically distributed. The microclimatic conditions at a site where C. laxiflora was distributed produced severe water stress condition during summer months. Daily maximum temperature reached $30.4^\circC$ and the highest vapor pressure deficit was 1.31 KPa when 13 rainless days were continued. During this period soil water content decreased to below the field capacity even at a depth of 20 cm and xylem pressure potential also decreased to 2.04 MPa. However, turgor potential was maintained more than 0.4 MPa. Patterns of stomatal conductance were changed with evaporative demand and soil water availability. On the other hand, microclimatic conditions at a site where C. cordata was distributed were moderate water strees condition compared with those at a site C. laxiflora was distributed. Though soil water content was maintained above field capacity C. cordata showed a remarkable decrease in turgor potential and stomatal conductance throughout the experiment. These results indicate that there is a difference in habitat characteristics between the two species and C. laxiflora is more resistant than C. cordata to water stress.
This study was carried out in order to investigate the main traits related to photosynthesis by multiple regression analysis. The photosynthetic rate showed more significant increase in shaded leaves of plant than in non-shaded leaves of plant after shading treatment for 44 days. Negative correlation was found between net photosynthetic rate and SLA(specific leaf area). However, the values obtained from the linear equation were different and were highly significance. From the above results, net photosynthetic rate of shading treatment is higher than that of control in the same SLA. We also found that there were correlation between stomatal conductance and SPAD as well as net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance. By the multiple regression analysis, SPAD value, SLA, stomatal conductance and leaf water potential showed a higher correlation coefficient of $r=0.848^{**}$. From the results, out of 4 factors(SPAD value, SLA, stomatal conductance, leaf water potential) stomatal conductance was main factor in the view points of partial regressing.
This study was to elucidate the relation between the water relations parameters obtained from P-V curves and stomatal closure. The results obtained are as follows: 1) The water potential at incipient plasmolysis obtained from P-V curves was similar to the water potential at critical stomatal closure. 2) The critical stomatal closure of sun leaves appear at -21 bar (-17 bar, shade leaves) in Pinus koraiensis, -20 bar in Pinus rigida, -22 bar in Pinus densiflora, and -24 bar in Larix leptolepis. On a relative water content basis, the critical stomatal closures of sun leaves appear at 85% (82%, shade leaves) in Pinus kordiensis, 77% in Pinus ragida, 85% in Pinus densiflora, and 70% in Larix leptolepis. 3) The incipient stomatal closures of sun leaves appear at -14 bar (-12 bar, shade leaves) in Pinus koraiensis, -10 bar in Pinus rigida, -15 bar in Pinus densiflora, and -6 bar in Larix leptolepis. On a relative water content basis, the incipient stomatal closures of sun leaves appear at 90% in Pinus koraiensis, 93% in Pinus rigida, 90% in Pinus densiflora, and 93% in Larix leptolepis. 4) The leaf conductance was increased by increase in volume-averaged turgor pressure was linearly increased by increase in relative water content.
The data pf dosspcoatopm cpmstamts for aliphatic amines and quaternary ammonium-methylorange salts are based on the electrosatic theory of conductance. Dissociation constants for primary amines nad quaternary ammonium-methylorange salts (1$\times$10$^{-5}$~1$\times$10$^{-3}$ M) in nitrobenzene solution or water solution was evaluated from the relation of the concentration and the electric conduction and the electric conductance at $25^{\circ}C$ Plots of ${\delta}C$ against reciprocal conductance were linear ; hence the center-to-center distance of this salt was 1.75 $\AA$ in nitrobenzene solution.
