  • Karst water was defined as 'Water which fills the cavities of the earth continuously and is only subject to gravity and hydraulic pressure.' Karst springs are water outlets from karst-hydrologically active cavities in water-soluble rocks, whether they are on the surface or within the earth. Karst springs behave so differently that the general principles of classification for all springs can be applied to them with a few exceptions. Firstly, classification according to the outflow: perennial springs, periodic springs, rhythemically springs, episodically flowing spring. Secondly, classification according to geologic and tectonic conditions: bedding springs, fracture springs, overflow spring, ascending spring.

  • A more accurate understanding of the irrigation water supply is necessary for efficient agricultural water management. Although we measure water levels in an irrigation canal using ultrasonic water level gauges, some errors occur due to malfunctions or the surrounding environment. This study aims to apply CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) Deep-learning-based image classification and segmentation models to the irrigation canal's CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television) images. The CCTV images were acquired from the irrigation canal of the agricultural reservoir in Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do. We used the ResNet-50 model for the image classification model and the U-Net model for the image segmentation model. Using the Natural Breaks algorithm, we divided water level data into 2, 4, and 8 groups for image classification models. The classification models of 2, 4, and 8 groups showed the accuracy of 1.000, 0.987, and 0.634, respectively. The image segmentation model showed a Dice score of 0.998 and predicted water levels showed R2 of 0.97 and MAE (Mean Absolute Error) of 0.02 m. The image classification models can be applied to the automatic gate-controller at four divisions of water levels. Also, the image segmentation model results can be applied to the alternative measurement for ultrasonic water gauges. We expect that the results of this study can provide a more scientific and efficient approach for agricultural water management.

  • The remote sensing data can be used to calculate the water depth especially in the clear and shallow water area. In this study, the SPOT data was used for bathymetric mapping in Dong-Sha atoll, located in northern South China Sea. The in situ sea depth was collected by echo sounder as well. A global positioning system was employed to locate the accurate sampling points for sea depth. An empirical model between measurement sea depth and band digital count was determined and based on least squares regression analysis. Both non-classification and unsupervised classification were used in this study. The results show that the standard error is less than 0.9m for non-classification. Besides, the 10% error related to the measurement water depth can be satisfied for more than 85% in situ data points. Otherwise, the 10% relative error can reach more than 97%, 69%, and 51% data points at class 4, 5, and 6 respectively if supervised classification is applied. Meanwhile, we also find that the unsupervised classification can get more accuracy to estimate water depth with standard error less than 0.63, 0.93, and 0.68m at class 4, 5, and 6 respectively.

  • The technology of the SWG (Smart Water Grid) as one of most important national projects results in significant assignment that is closely associated with systematic management and effective operation. The individual component technics are required to establish directory and classification for the purpose of effectively managing their information related to research and development (R&D). The national science technology (S&T) standard classification tree which results in the representative example has been established with an intention to manage R&D information, human resource, and budget. It has been also revised every five years and then used in the various fields related to the evaluation, administration, and prediction of the national R&D projects. In addition, the standard classification system for R&D projects has been widely used in the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and EU (European Union) since the Frascati Manual was established in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Therefore, it is necessary for SWG techniques to develop the standard S&T classification tree for research management and evaluation. For this, it is essential to draw the core techniques for the SWG, which are incorporated with IT (Information Technology), NT (Nano Technology), and BT (Biology Technology).

  • This study investgates Korean water technology through the water market perspective and analyses its competitiveness. Based on the water technology classification, water technology competitiveness is analysed through the technological influence index and market dominance index which are based on the extracted water technology patents from the US, Europe, Korea, and Japan for the last decade. As a result, the Korean water technology patents were lack in influence and competitiveness in global market considering the large volume of patents. There are two most tech-influential industries in Korea; manufacturing industry consisting pipes, sterilization, disinfection, and advanced water purification equipment, and construction industry including seawater desalination and water resource development. Due to the domestic usage of the patents, the Korean water technology patents scored low in global market PFS(Patent Family Size) index compared to their CPP(Cites Per Patent) index. The study is meaningful in a way that the analysis on Korean water technology competitiveness using water technology classification system and patent analysis was conducted based on the perspective of the global water market.

  • Land cover classification is an essential basic information in natural environment management; however, land cover classification studies in Korea have not yet been proceeded to a sufficient level. At the present, only a limited number of the precedent studies that only cover definite city area has been conducted. Furthermore, there is almost no research conducted on the land cover classification schemes that could accurately classify the Korea's land cover conditions. This study primarily focuses on the land cover classification scheme which carries the most urgent priority in order to classify and to map out the Korean land cover conditions. In order to develop the most suitable land cover classification scheme, many foreign land cover classification cases and projects that are being carried out were reviewed in depth. The land cover classification scheme this study proposes comprises 3 levels : The first level consists of 7 different classes; the second level consists of 22 different classes; and the third level is made up of 50 classes. The land cover classification map will serve many important roles in natural environment management, such as the conjecture of natural habitats and estimation of oxygen production or carbon dioxide absorption capability of a forest. In water pollution modelling, the land cover classification data can be used to estimate and locate non-point sources of water pollution. If applied to a watershed, modelling it will allow to estimate the total amount of pollution from non-point sources of pollution in the water shed. The land cover classification data will also be good as a barometer data that determines defusion of air pollutants in air pollution modelling.

  • Natural mineral water is generally quite different from ordinary drinking water due to its original nature and various properties. The complexity of natural mineral water requires, therefore, not only to identify its nature and proper characteristics, but also to classify them by a reasonable scientific basis of comparison. The study was concentrated on a possible classification technique to natural mineral waters by their constitutions and physico-ehemical properties. The classification was carried out by the computation of such numerical parameters as ionic equivalent percentage, electrolytic conductance or mobility, ionic molecular weight, molecular concentration, equivalent conductivity and degree of ionization in consideration of the determinative criteria as follows -particular single element or molecule -major components of natural waters as bicarbonate, sulphate, chloride, caloride, calcium, magnesium, and sodium -moleculat concentration related to blood osmotic pressure -water temperature at emergence from spring -contents of free carbon dioxide (CO2) -pH value of water -total dissolved solids or salts (NaCl) The results obtained proved out to be clearly distinguhhable from ordinary drinking water as far as concern natural mineral water as an example on the subject -simple water -bicarbonate-predominating water -cold spring -carbonated-non gaseous water -weak alkaline water -non saline water Putting these various results together, the sample turned out to be a kind of natural mineral water that can be used as a drinking water if microbiologically safe.

  • Water quality trends for major tributaries (66 sites) in the Yeongsan River basin of Korea were examined for 12 parameters based on water quality data collected every month over a period of 12 months. The complex data matrix was treated with multivariate analysis such as PCA, FA and CA. PCA/FA identified four factors, which are responsible for the structure explaining 78.2% of the total variance. The first factor accounting 27.3% of the total variance was correlated with BOD, TN, TP, and TOC, and weighting values were allowed to these parameters for grade classification. CA rendered a dendrogram, where monitoring sites were grouped into 5 clusters. Cluster 2 corresponds to high pollution from domestic wastewater, wastewater treatment and run-off from livestock farms. For grade classification of tributaries, scores to 10 indexes were calculated considering the weighting values to 3 parameters as BOD, TN and TP which were categorized as the first factor after FA. The highest-polluted group included 10 tributaries such as Gwangjucheon, Jangsucheon, Daejeoncheon, Gamjungcheon, Yeongsancheon. The results indicate that grade classification method suggested in this study is useful in reliable classification of tributaries in the study area.
