Local mean fluctuating velocity components were measured in the separating and reattaching axisymmetrc region of turbulent boundary layer over the wall of convex cylinders placed in a water tunnel by using 2-color 4-beam fiber optics laser Doppler velocimetry. Measurements were made with three different diameters of cylinders with four different diameters of cylinders with four different diameter of the obstructions. The range of Reynolds number based on step height was between 5,000 to 25,200. The study demonstrates that the reattachment length decreases with decreasing cylinder radius and is always shorter than that for the two-dimensional backward-facing step flow at the condition of the same step height. It was also observed that the turbulent kinetic energy in the recirculating region increases with an increases in the radius of convex curvature. The measured velocity field suggests that the transverse curvature can effect definitely the formation of corner eddy.
In this study, we experimentally investigated that the optimization of pulsating jet to reduce the separated flow region behind the vertical fence. The vertical fence was submerged in the turbulent boundary layer in the circulating water channel and we applied phase averaged PIV method to measure the instantaneous velocity fields around the fence. One cycle of pulsating jet is divided into 20 phases and grabbed total 200 instantaneous velocity fields at each phase. The experiments were performed by varying the frequency, maximum jet velocity and the shape of pulsating jet wave. Pulsating jet was precisely made by piston-type pump controlled by the computer. The obtained results were compared with normal fence flow. From this study, we found there is the specific frequency which is effective in reducing the reattachment region.

The effect of heat conduction resistance on laminar film condensation of the pure saturated vapor in forced flow over a flat plate has been investigated as boundary layer solutions. A efficient numerical methods for water are proposed for its solution. The momentum and energy balance equations are reduced to a nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations with four parameters: the Prandtl number, Pr, Modified Jacob number, $Ja^{\ast}/Pr$, defined by an overall temperature difference, a property ratio $\sqrt{P_l{\mu}_l/P_v{\mu}_v}$ and the conjugate parameter ${\zeta}$. The similarity and simplified solutions obtained reveal the effects of the conjugate parameter.
We carried out the experiments which controled the periodic jet in front of the fence to alter the fence wake. The experiments were performed in circulating water channel and the vertical fence was submerged in the boundary layer. The frequency, jet nozzle distance and speed of jet passing the slit were investigated. Each case divided into 20 phases and phase-averaged results were compared with uncontrolled fence flow. From the results, we found the specific frequency and nozzle distance which were good for reducing the reattachment length. In this case, the reattachment length was decreased 35% compared with the uncontrolled fence flow.

A Raman LIDAR system has been designed and constructed for quantitative measurement of water vapor mixing ratio. The comparison with commercial microwave radiometer and global navigation satellite system(GNSS) was performed for the precipitable water vapor(PWV) profile and total PWV. The result shows that the total GNSS-PWV and LIDAR-PWV have good correlation with each other. But, there is small difference between the two methods because of maximum measurement height in LIDAR and the GNSS method. There are some significant differences between Raman and MWR when the water vapor concentration changes quickly near the boundary layer or at the edge of a cloud. Finally we have decided that MWR cannot detect spatial changes but LIDAR can measure spatial changes.

This work describes the low-resolution spectral modeling of the water vapor, carbon dioxide and their mixtures by applying the weighted-sum-of-gray-gas-gases model (WSGGM) to each narrow band. Proper modeling scheme of gray gas absorption coefficients vs temperature relation is suggested. Comparison between the modeled emissivity calculated from this relation and the 'true' emissivity obtained from the high temperature statistical narrow band parameters is made for a few typical narrow bands. Low resolution spectral intensities from one-dimensional layers are also obtained and examined for uniform, parabolic and boundary layer type temperature profiles using the obtained WSGGM's with several gray gases. The results are compared with the narrow band spectral intensities obtained by a narrow band model-based code with Curtis-Godson approximation. Good agreement is found between them. Data bases including optimized modeling parameters and total and low-resolution spectral weighting factors are developed for water vapor, carbon dioxide and their mixtures. This model and obtained data bases, available from the authors' Internet site, can be appropriately applied to any radiative transfer equation solver.
Batch adsorption tests were performed to evaluate the applicability of adsorption kinetic model by using hydrogel chitosan bead crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (HCB-G) for Cu(II) as cation and/or phosphate as anion. Pseudo first and second order model were applied to determine the sorption kinetic property and intraparticle and Boyd equation were used to predict the diffusion of Cu(II) and phosphate at pore and boundary-layer, respectively. According to the value of theoretical and experimental uptake of Cu(II) and phosphate, pseudo second order is more suitable. On comparison with the value of adsorption rate constant (k), phosphate kinetic was 2-4 times faster than that of Cu(II) at any experimental condition indicating the electrostatic interaction between ${NH_3}^+$ and phosphate is dominated at the presence of single component. However, when Cu(II) and phosphate simultaneously exist, the value of k for phosphate was sharply decreased and then the difference was not significant. Both diffusion models confirmed that the sorption rate was controlled by film mass transfer at the beginning time (t < 3 hr) and pore diffusion at next time section (t > 6 hr).
The unstirred water layer (UWL), which has been known to exist in the boundary of the intestinal lumen and intestinal wall, often behaves as an absorption barrier especially for lipophilic drugs. The intestinal absorption of drugs is often characterized using Caco-2 cell monolayers grown on Transwell polycarbonate membranes. The permeability $(P_{app})$ of drugs across the cell monolayer might be influenced by the agitation of the donor compartment, since the width of UWL on the surface of the cell monolayer would be reduced by the agitation. In this study, the effect of agitation of the donor compartment with 60 rpm on the permeability was measured for 12 drugs with a wide range of lipophilicity and permeability. The $P_{app}$ of mannitol, tributylmethyl ammonium, cimetidine, ranitidine, hydrocortisone, benzylpenicillin and loxoprofen was not influenced by the agitation, while the $P_{app}$ of theophylline, propranolol, YH439, phenylpropanolamine and testosterone was increased by the agitation. There was a significant correlation between the increase of $P_{app}$ by agitation and the lipophilicity for the compounds having $P_{app}>2{\times}10^{-5}$ cm/sec. No correlation was observed for the difference in $P_{app}$ by agitation and the molecular weight, or lipophilicity of the drugs. Therefore, the agitation rate of the donor compartment in the Caco-2 cell monolayer study should be carefully controlled in order to estimate $P_{app}$ reproducibly especially for lipophilic drugs.

The natural convection from upward and downward facing horizontal isothermal plate immersed in water is studied numerically. The temperature of the plate is from 0.0 .deg. C to 8.0 .deg. C and the ambient water temperature is from 1.0 .deg. C to 10.0 .deg. C. Numerical results are presented for the velocity profiles, temperature profiles, local heat transfer coefficients, and average Nusselt numbers over the entire flow fields. Flow patterns are shown in the upward and downward facing surfaces at different ambient water temperatures. For the upward facing surface, there are upflow and unsteady flow. And the regions of the ambient water temperatures which give rise to the upflow are more extensive as the temperatures of the isothermal surface become more distant from the density extremum temperature. For the downward facing surface, only the downflow region is shown. For the upward facing horizontal isothermal surface, the average Nusselt number(= N $u_{1}$$^{*}$) is 28.86(Ra)$^{0.01}$. And for the downward facing surface, the average Nusselt number(= N $u_{2}$$^{*}$) is $C_{2}$(Ra)$^{0.2}$ and the values of $C_{2}$ are enlarged in the range of 0.785 .leq. $C_{2}$ .leq. 1.250 as increasing of the temperatures of the isothermal surface.ace.ace.
As the performance of microelectronic devices is improved, the use of copper as a heat dissipation member is increasing due to its good thermal conductivity. The high thermal conductivity of copper, however, leads to difficulties in the joining process. Satisfactory bonding with copper is known to be difficult, especially if high shear and peel strengths are desired. The primary reason is that a copper oxide layer develops rapidly and is weakly attached to the base metal under typical conditions. Thus, when a clean copper substrate is bonded, the initial strength of the joint is high, but upon environmental exposure, an oxide layer may develop, which will reduce the durability of the joint. In this study, an epoxy adhesive formulation was investigated to improve the strength and reliability of a copper to copper joint. Epoxy hardeners such as anhydride, dihydrazide, and dicyandiamide and catalysts such as triphenylphosphine and imidazole were added to an epoxy resin mixture of DGEBA and DGEBF. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses revealed that the curing temperatures were dependent on the type of hardener rather than on the catalyst, and higher heat of curing resulted in a higher Tg. The reliability of the copper joint against a high temperature and high humidity environment was found to be the lowest in the case of dihydrazide addition. This is attributed to its high water permeability, which led to the formation of a weak boundary layer of copper oxide. It was also found that dicyandiamide provided the highest initial joint strength and reliability while anhydride yielded intermediate performance between dicyandiamide and dihydrazide.
