The objective of this study is to analyze the characteristics of flow and bed change at the wide, shallow confluence of the Geum river and Mihocheon, which has different bed slope, height, and sediment concentration condition between the main channel and tributary. RMA-2 and SED2D were used to simulate flow and bed changes at the site. Flow simulations showed that the overall flow velocity, shear layer and vortex generated at the left bank of the confluence increase as the discharge was increased. Sediment transport simulations indicated that because of the high inflow sediment concentration from Mihocheon, sediment concentration in the main river increases after the confluence, the high sediment concentration band was kept along the shear layer boundary and the left bed was aggraded after confluence.
Local phenomena around bridge piers and abutments are generally considered to be similar, nevertheless the presence of the incoming boundary layer on the side wall in the abutment case generates extra pressure gradients and consequently a more complex vortex pattern. In the literature, experimental data for bridge abutments are relatively scarce; in particular almost no data are available for the time evolution of the scour. In this work we present the results of several long duration (3 days longrightarrow5weeks) clear water scour laboratory tests around bridge abutments; the time evolution of the erosion process is analysed with respect to local and global characteristic values (maxima, volume, hole shape). In particular we analyse the effect of the constriction ratio b/B between the transversal obstacle dimension and the flume width: in many practical situations abutments (or piers) obstruct a significant portion of the channel, so that the average acceleration due to constriction is expected to increase the scour effects of the local acceleration around the obstacle. Measured values for maximum scour are poorly predicted by literature formulas. Scour depths are positively correlated with the constriction ratio, but increases are smaller than expected from literature indications. Experimental results show that models for bridge piers cannot be directly applied to abutments; in particular, time scales for the latter are significantly larger than for piers.

This paper is concerned with the numerical analysis of dynamic response of floating offshore wind turbine subject to underwater explosion using an effective non-reflecting technique. An infinite sea water domain was truncated into a finite domain, and the non-reflecting technique called the perfectly matched layer(PML) was applied to the boundary of truncated finite domain to absorb the inherent reflection of out-going impact wave at the boundary. The generalized transport equations that govern the inviscid compressible water flow was split into three PML equations by introducing the direction-wise absorption coefficients and state variables. The fluid-structure interaction problem that is composed of the wind turbine and the sea water flow was solved by the iterative coupled Eulerian FVM and Largangian FEM. And, the explosion-induced hydrodynamic pressure was calculated by JWL(Jones-Wilkins-Lee) equation of state. Through the numerical experiment, the hydrodynamic pressure and the structural dynamic response were investigated. It has been confirmed that the case using PML technique provides more reliable numerical results than the case without using PML technique.

An experimental study on the flow over the axisymmetric backward-facing step was carried out. The purposes of the present study are to investigate the effect of the free stream turbulence intensity on the reattachment length and to understand the turbulence structure of the recirculating flows. Local mean and fluctuating velocity components were measured in the separated and reattaching axisymmetric turbulent boundary layer over the wall of convex cylinder placed in a water tunnel by using 2-color 4-beam fiber optics laser Doppler velocimetry. As the free stream turbulence intensity increased, the reattachment length became shorter due to the enhanced mixing in the separated shear layer. It was also observed that the reverse flow velocity and turbulent kinetic energy increase with increasing free stream turbulence intensity. Spectral data and flow visualization showed that low-frequency motions occur in the separated flow behind a backward-facing step. These motions have a significant effect on the time-averaged turbulence data.

In Japan, more than 80 % of soybean growing area is converted fields and excess water is one of the major problems in soybean production. For example, recent study (Yoshifuji et al., 2016) suggested that in the fields of shallow groundwater level (GWL) (< 1m depth), rising GWL even in a short period (e.g. 1 day) causes inhibition of soybean growth. Thus it becomes more and more important to predict GWL and soil moisture in detail. In addition to conventional surface drainage and underdrain, FOEAS (Farm Oriented Enhancing Aquatic System), which is expected to control GWL in fields adequately, has been developed recently. In this study we attempted to predict GWL and soil moisture condition at the converted field with FOEAS in Biwa lake reclamation area, Shiga prefecture, near the center of the main island of Japan. Two dimensional HYDRUS model (Simuinek et al., 1999) based on common Richards' equation, was used for the calculation of soil water movement. The calculation domain was considered to be 10 and 5 meter in horizontal and vertical direction, respectively, with two layers, i.e. 20cm-thick of plowed layer and underlying subsoil layer. The center of main underdrain (10 cm in diameter) was assumed to be 5 meter from the both ends of the domain and 10-60cm depth from the surface in accordance with the field experiment. The hydraulic parameters of the soil was estimated with the digital soil map in "Soil information web viewer" and Agricultural soil-profile physical properties database, Japan (SolphyJ) (Kato and Nishimura, 2016). Hourly rainfall depth and daily potential evapo-transpiration rate data were given as the upper boundary condition (B.C.). For the bottom B.C., constant upward flux, which meant the inflow flux to the field from outside, was given. Seepage face condition was employed for the surrounding of the underdrain. Initial condition was employed as GWL=60cm. Then we compared the simulated and observed results of volumetric water content at depth of 15cm and GWL. While the model described the variation of GWL well, it tended to overestimate the soil moisture through the growing period. Judging from the field condition, and observed data of soil moisture and GWL, consideration of soil structure (e.g. cracks and clods) in determination of soil hydraulic parameters at the plowed layer may improve the simulation results of soil moisture.

A POD analysis based on time-resolved PIV measurements in a circulating water channel has been conducted to identify the skin friction reduction mechanism of outer-layer vertical blades. A recent PIV measurement indicated 2.73% and 7.95% drag reduction in the blade plane and the blade-in-between plane, respectively. In the present study, the influence of vertical blades array upon the characteristics of the turbulent coherent structures was analyzed by the POD method. It is observed that the vortical structures are cut and deformed by the blades array and that their temporal evolution is strongly associated with the skin-friction drag reduction mechanism in the turbulent boundary layer flow.
Underwater ambient noise level was measured at two points near the Youngil Bay. The environmental characteristics depend upon oceanographic conditions of sound propagation ana its implication on the source of ambient noise. Some noise sources were estimated, and the effect of the oceanographic conditions on the noise level variation had been considered. The results were as follows : 1) At the nearshore station of Youngil Bay, the ambient noise level in the near bottom(45m) was lower than that of the near surface(10m) by 15dB. This difference was due to spherical spreading from the upper to the lower layer. 2) At the open sea station which is located outside of the thermal front existing near the Youngil Bay, the ambient noise level of the upper layer(20m) was higher than that of the lower layer (100m) by $8{\sim}12dB$ below 50Hz and $15{\sim}23dB$ above 50Hz. 3) Above 60Hz the ambient noise level at the nearshore station was higher than that of the open sea station, while below 60Hz, the result was reverse. It appears that a boundary layer existed between the two stations.
Conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) data obtained along a meridional section in the eastern tropical Pacific in July 2003 have been analyzed to identify various water masses, and to examine the hydrographic structure and zonal geostrophic currents in the upper 1000 m. Water mass analysis shows the existence of subtropical and intermediate waters, characterized by layers of subsurface salinity maximum and minimum, originating from both hemispheres of the Pacific. Vertical section of temperature in the upper 200 m shows the typical trough-ridge structure associated with the zonal current system for most of the tropical Pacific. Water with the lowest salinity of less than 33.6 was found in the upper 30 m between $8.5^{\circ}N$ and $10.5^{\circ}N$ in a boundary zone between the North Equatorial Current and North Equatorial Countercurrent. Temporal changes in water properties observed at $10.5^{\circ}N$ over a period of 9 days suggest both the local rainfall and horizontal advection is responsible for the presence of the low-salinity water. Development of a barrier layer was also observed at $10.5^{\circ}N$. In the North Equatorial Current region a local upwelling was observed at $15^{\circ}N$, which brings high salinity and cooler subtropical water to the sea surface. A band of countercurrent occurs in the upwelling region between $13^{\circ}N$ and $15^{\circ}N$.

The shelter effect of a porous wind fence on a triangular prism was experimentally investigated in a circulating water channel. A porous fence of porosity .epsilon.=38.5% was installed in front of the prism model. The fence and prism model were embedded in a turbulent boundary layer. The instantaneous velocity fields around the fence and prism model were measured by using the instantaneous velocity fields around the fence and prism model were measured by using the 2-frame PTV(Particle Tracking Velocimetry) system. By installing the fence in front of the prism, the recirculation flow region decreases compared with that of no fence case. The porous fence also decreases the mean velocity, turbulent intensity and turbulent kinetic energy around the prism. Especially, at the top of the prism, the turbulent kinetic energy is about half of that without the fence.

To estimate the dispersion coefficients in a coastal area with complex topography, several schemes using empirical equations expressed with and in lateral and vertical directions, respectively have been examined. Estimation results using these equations and meteorological data obtained from SODAR system were compared' with previously measured dispersion coefficients in other coastal areas. Validations of estimation results have been performed by comparing the measured concentrations with predicted ones empolying in Boryung coastal area. Important conclusions were drawn as follows; (1) Variations of lateral and vertical wind direction revealed different height dependency in upper and lower mixed boundary layer. (2) Because of turbulent constraint effect by large water body in a coastal region, the lateral and the vertical dispersion coefficients were smaller than those of P-G system. (3) As a result of examining the performance measure of these schemes through checking of coincidence between measured and predicted concentrations, vertical dispersion coefficients were smaller than those of P-G system, and the Cramer scheme was found to be more appropriate rather than others in the coastal area surrounding Boryung power plant.
