  • The adsorption of the Chchory particles on Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions were examined by measurements of the adsorption percentage under various condition of temperature, pH, times, heavy metal concentration. Each of 100ml sample solution of Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions mixed with 2g of the Cichory under stirring in shaking water bath for minutes. The solutions were then filtered and pretreatmented according to water pollution official test methods. The concentrations of Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions in the solution were determined by the atomic adsorption spectrophotometer. As a results, the most effective pH of the adsorption of Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cd(II) was 9. With increasing the concentration of heavy metals the amount of adsorption on Cichory was increased. The adsorption equilibrium of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions were reached to equilibrium by shaking for about 40 minutes. The absorptivities were 85%, 75% respectively.

  • Granular activated carbon is commonly used in fixed-bed adsorbers to remove organic chemicals. In this experiment organic chemical solutions were prepared by adding the reagent grade organic chemical to distilled water. Isotherm adsorption tests of volatile organic chemicals were conducted using bottle-point technique and column test. Organic chemicals after passing through the column were extracted with hexane and analyzed with gas chromatography (Hewlett-Packard 5890) to check the adsorption capacity and breakthrough curve. The result were as follows: 1. The BET surface area of coconut activated carbon was 658~1,010 m$^2$/g where as coconut shell carbon was 6.6 m$^2$/g. Coconut activated carbon increased the BET surface area and adsorption capacity in bottle-point isotherm. 2. The adsorption capacity of coconut activated carbon for trichloroethylene (TCE) was reduced in the presence of humic substance. 3. A decrease in particle size of activated carbon resulted in higher adsorption capacity and lower intraparticle diffusion coefficient. It is reflected not only as a decrease in Freudlich adsorption capacity value (K) but also as an increase in Freudlich exponenent value (1/n).

  • The adsorption and molecular sieve characteristics of water, methanol, ethanol, butanol and benzene on acid-alkali treated natural zeolite from Kampo area were investigated by the Diamond·Kinter method, and it was compared with synthetic zeolite A. Adsorption amount of water increased with the treatment of acid rather than the treatment of alkali. Similar tendency was observedd in adsorption of alcohols such as methanol, ethanol and butanol, but the amount of adsorption decreased. From the views of the molecular size, adsorption amount of benzene decreased because of surface activity according to the cations species rather than chemical treatment. And it was almost same value that the amount of adsorption was compared acid treated natural zeolite with synthetic zeolite A.

  • This study was carried out for characterization of MIO synthesized in our laboratory by co-precipitation method and applied isotherm and kinetic models for adsorption properties. XRD analysis were conducted to find crystal structure of synthesized MIO. Further SEM and XPS analysis was performed before and after phosphate adsorption, and BET analysis for surface characterization. Phosphate stock solution was prepared by KH2PO4 for characterization of phosphate adsorption, and batch experiment was conducted using 50 ml conical tube. Langmuir and Freundlich models were applied based on adsorption equilibrium test of MIO by initial phosphate solution. Pseudo first order and pseudo second order models were applied for interpretation of kinetic model by temperature. Surface area and pore size of MIO were found $89.6m^2/g$ and 16 nm respectively. And, the determination coefficient ($R^2$) value of Langmuir model was 0.9779, which was comparatively higher than that of Freundlich isotherm model 0.9340.

  • Adsorption experiment was carried out to find the adsorption capacity and characteristics of heavy metals(Cd, Pb) onto soil and mixed soil with food compost. Result showed that mixed soil having higher organic content adsorbed more heavy metal than soil, indicating that food compost can be used effectively to prevent soil pollution. Linear adsorption isotherm which adopted to find the adsorption characteristics was used to calculate Retardation Factor(R). The value of Retardation Factor(R)s of Pb and Cd in mixed soil, found as 34.54, 24.42 respectively, are higher than those in soil which were found as 4.64, 3.67, respectively. The value of Retardation Factor(R) using Freundlich adsorption isotherm could be presented by the functions of concentration and showed similar result as the linear one. But Freundlich adsorption isotherm showed higher relationship than linear one and the retardation factor(R) from freundlich adsorption isotherm was thought as more effective method to assess adsorption capacity because it could reflect gradient and intercept of the isotherm.

  • Adsorption performance of tetracycline antibiotic compounds such as tetracycline(TC), oxytetracycline(OTC), chlortetracycline (CTC) and minocycline(MNC) on granular activated carbon(GAC) was evaluated in this study. The coal-based activated carbon was found to be more effective than other carbons in adsorption of tetracycline antibiotic compounds. The wood-based activated carbon was less effective than coconut- and coal-based carbon in adsorption nevertheless having larger pore volume and specific surface area than others carbons. The maximum adsorption capacities(X/M) of coal-based activated carbon for the four tetracycline species was 1.27$\sim$1.36 and 1.69$\sim$1.84 times larger than coconut- and wood-based activated carbon, respectively. Carbon usage rates(CUR) of coal-, coconut- and wood-based activated carbons for tetracycline(TC) were 2.96 g/day, 3.40 g/day and 4.53 g/day, respectively. Similar results were obtained in the adsorption of the rest three tetracycline species. It is concluded that coal-based activated carbon could removed the tetracycline antibiotic compounds better than other material-based activated carbons.

  • Brackish water desalination using reverse osmosis(RO) membrane is more useful and economic than sea water to solve the shortage of fresh water supply because of its low total dissolved solid(TDS) contents. Silica and humic acid in brackish water make serious fouling problems and cause the decline of permeate flux and increase of operating pressure. In this study, the experiments for removal of silica and humic acid were conducted with calcite particles to prevent membrane fouling and investigated the effect of pH of feed water Adsorption of silica to calcite was higher at pH=7.5 than 9.5 and removal rate was increased according to increase of initial concentration of silica. The effect of pH on adsorption of humic acid was not significant but at low initial concentration the adsorption of humic acid was enhanced at pH 7.5. The result of this study expect to apply to brackish water desalination experiment of flat-sheet reverse osmosis membrane.

  • A novel dry and wet deposition collector, which can overcome the several problems such as water evaporation cartridge cracks and high costs founded in the previous collector systems, has been constructed. ENVI-18 SPE adsorption cartridge has been used to measure atmospheric deposition of polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). A surrogate surface, consisted of water and methanol, was filled in the dry deposition funnel to simulate dry deposition onto water surface. A water supply system in order to compensat evaporation of the surrogate surface was used and it was consisted of a piston pump, a tubing pump, a overflow tube and a chamber system. A novel water vaporizing system to supply water onto the wet SPE cartridge system with a constant flow rate was developed. The novel water vaporizing system, consisted of a vacuum pump, a water supply reserviour and tube and a mini space heater, could prevent the PAHs adsorption cartridge cracks occurred in the previous collector and effectively adsorb PAHs. The novel dry and wet deposition collector showed a good adsorption, desorption, and recovery rates of PAHs. By reducing the number of pumps used and employing polypyopylene (PP) instead of teflon as a material of collection funnel, the total construction costs were much reduced as compared with the previous dry and wet deposition collectors.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the adsorption rate of phosphate corrosion inhibitor and reaction rate constant in drinking water distribution systems. The optimum concentration of corrosion inhibitor would vary depending on the quality of water, pipe materials, and condition of metal surfaces. The current adsorption study indicated that the residual phosphate concentration of the corrosion inhibitor decreased with the time as it adsorbed on the surface of pipe material. As time went by, the residual phosphate concentration became constant. It means that the formation of the corrosion protection film on metal surfaces is completed.
