Immune activities of two different extracts of Kadsura japonica Dunal. by typical extraction processes using water and ethanol at 60 $^{\circ}$C and 100 $^{\circ}$C were compared to them by ultrasofication system and through traditional fermemtation process. The fermented broth Kadsura japonica Dunal. definitely improved the growth of human B and T cell up to 30% and 22%, respectively, compared to the control. The secretion of TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-60 was also enhanced by the addition of the fermented broth, up to 35%. NK cell activation was significantly improved up to 1.4 times higher than the case of adding other extracts. It was also found that this broth could yield higher nitric oxide production from macrophage than Lipopolysaccharides (LPS). It can be concluded that Kadsura japonica has immune activities and, in general, the culture broth from a conventional fermentation has higher immune activities, possibly by yielding immuno-modulatory compounds, not existed in typcial extraction systems as the result of HPLC analysis.

Low-fat, precooked high quality Wanjajun was prepared by treating natural antioxidant herbs and hydrocolloids for quantity production of cook/chill system in foodservice. The proposed Wanjajun was formulated under the consideration of flavor and fat level. Wanjajun was prepared with hydrocolloid such as sodium alginate, car-boxymethyl cellulose (CMC), carrageenan and xanthan gum. Cooking yield, fat retention and water holding capacity of Wanjajun containing hydrocolloidal gums were higher than those of control. L-value of raw product was low in comparison with cooked product, but a-value was higher than that of other cooked product. Colors of raw and cooked products were not different among five kinds of products. pH value of cooked product was higher than that of raw product pH range of cooked products revealed to 6.10~6.23. There was no considerable change in pH value during storage. The coliform group and Staphylococus aureus were not detected during storage. Total bacteria1 counts were close to microbial guidelines for safe condition. Hardness, springness, cohesiveness, gumminess and brittleness of low-fat products were generally lower than those of control product. Hardness, gumminess and brittleness of reheated products were higher than those of preheated products. Flavor, tenderness, juiciness and overall quality were not different between precooked and reheated products. Textural characteristics of products were superior in the order of sodium alginate, xanthan gum, CMC, carrageenan and control product.
Successive changes of transpiration by the tobacco plant during the growing season with pot trial treated with 30cm and 100cm ground water tables were compared with change of soil moisture content in rhizospere of field under natural rainfall conditions. Transpiration from the 41st to the 60th day after transplanting was the highest showing about 50% of total transpiration of whole cultivation period. As the result, soil moisture condition in rhizospere of field was kept insufficiently during the above period. Transpiration by the plant was so remarkably affected by the meteorological environment that the transpiration on rain-cloudy day was one third of that on clear day at middle stage of the growth. Maximum transpiration in a clear day was obtained from 14:00 to 16:00 at the 58th day after transplanting.
To study the effects of an urease inhibitor, N-(n-butyl)-thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT), and a nitrification inhibitor, dicyandiamide (DCD), on nitrogen losses and nitrogen use efficiency, urea fertilizer with or without inhibitors and slowrelease fertilizer (synthetic thermoplastic resins coated urea) were applied to direct-seeded flooded rice fields in 1998. In the urea and the urea+DCD treatments, NH$_4$$^{+}$ -N concentrations reached 50 mg N L$^{-1}$ after application. Urea+NBPT and urea+ NBPT+DCD treatments maintained NH$_4$$^{+}$ -N concentrations below 10 mg N L$^{-1}$ in the floodwater, while the slow-release fertilizer application maintained the lowest concentration of NH$_4$$^{+}$ -N in floodwater. The ammonia losses of urea+NBPT and urea+NBPT+DCD treatments were lower than those of urea and urea+DCD treatments during the 30 days after fertilizer application. It was found that N loss due to ammonia volatilization was minimized in the treatments of NBPT with urea and the slow-release fertilizer. The volatile loss of urea+DCD treatment was not significantly different from that of urea surface application. It was found that NBPT delayed urea hydrolysis and then decreased losses due to ammonia volatilization. DCD, a nitrification inhibitor, had no significant effect on ammonia loss under flooded conditions. The slow-release fertilizer application reduced ammonia volatilization loss most effectively. As N0$_3$$^{[-10]}$ -N concentrations in the soil water indicated that leaching losses of N were negligible, DCD was not effective in inhibiting nitrification in the flooded soil. The amount of N in plants was especially low in the slow-release fertilizer treatment during the early growth stage for 15 days after fertilization. The amount of N in the rice plants, however, was higher in the slow-release fertilizer treatment than in other treatments at harvest. Grain yields in the treatments of slow-release fertilizer, urea+NBPT+ DCD and urea+NBPT were significantly higher than those in the treatments of urea and urea+DCD. NBPT treatment with urea and the slow-release fertilizer application were effective in both reducing nitrogen losses and increasing grain yield by improving N use efficiency in direct-seeded flooded rice field.field.
These studies were carried out to find out the polishing properties and cooking quality of the cut-polished barley. Naked barley, Youngsanbori which was produced in Chonnam province, Korea in 1981, was applied for this experiment. Polished barley was produced by the conventional method and cut-barley was manufactured by the method established by Wheat and Barley Research Institute. The yield of cut-polished barley was 68.2% and that of conventionally polished barley was 70.1 %. The ratio of length to width was 2.88 in cut-polished barley and that of conventionally polished barley was 1.36. And weight of 1,000 kernel was 9.5g in cut-polished barley and 18.5g in conventionally polished barley. Energy consumption was found to be 91.1kW/1,000kg in conventionally polished barley and 105kW/1,000kg in cut-polished barley. Whiteness, water uptake ratio and expanded volume of cooked barley were 45.5, 225.7 and 283% in conventionally polished barley and 49.5, 312.7 and 318% in cut-polished barley, respectively.

This study was conducted to compare the growth performance and carcass evaluation of Jeju native cattle (JNC) and its crossbreds (CBK = 25 JNC: 50 Charolais: 25 Brahman and BCBK = 62.5 JNC: 25 Charolais: 12.5 Brahman) fed for a short fattening period. Eight male calves each of JNC (80.$40{\pm}10$), CBK ($113.50{\pm}12.3$), and BCBK ($100.3{\pm}9.5$) were weaned at 4 month of age and were fed similar diets for 18 months of their age. All animals were fed a growing ration until 12 months of age and thereafter switched to a fattening ration for a period of 6 months. Final body weight (BW) and BW gain were significantly higher in CBK and BCBK compared with JNC. The CBK and BCBK gained 27.42% and 25.99% more BW, respectively, compared with JNC. The CBK and BCBK animals consumed significantly less DM than JNC to gain a unit of BW. Body weight gain, DM intake and feed conversion efficiency were similar between CBK and BCBK. Weight of hot and cold carcass, ribs, boneless meat and Longissimus dorsi muscle area were significantly different among JNC and its crossbreds. The heaviest carcass was observed in CBK followed by BCBK and JNC. Carcass, chest and femur lengths were greater in CBK and BCBK compared with JNC. Chest width, chest depth and hip width were similar in JNC and its crossbreds. Femur width was significantly greater in CBK compared with BCBK and JNC. Femur depth and chest girth were significantly greater in CBK and BCBK compared with JNC. Weight and fat yield in different carcass cuts were greater in crossbreds compared to JNC. Percent moisture, crude ash, and crude protein of meat were similar in JNC and its crossbreds. Percent crude fat in beef was significantly greater in JNC compared with its crossbreds. Beef shear force value, percent water holding capacity, juiciness and tenderness were significantly greater for JNC compared to its crossbreds. In conclusion, CBK and BCBK have shown greater growth rates and produced heavier carcasses with good degree of fatness when compared with JNC.
This study was conducted to observe the characteristics of mineral nutrient uptake of single-node cutting rose 'Versilla' and to determine optimal nutrient solution control method for soilless culture of 'Versilla' in a closed hydroponic system. Nutrient solution was managed by five different control methods: macro- and micro-element control in aeroponic system (M&M), macroelement control in aeroponic system (M), nutrient solution supplement in aeroponic system (S); electrical conductivity (EC) control in aeroponic system(EC-A); EC control in deep flow technique system(EC-D). The concentration of $NO_3$-N exceeds optimal range whereas P and Mg decreased at the later stage of plant growth with the EC control method, EC-A and EC-D. The overall mineral nutrient content increased with S. On the other hand the nutrient content at the root environment was maintained optimal with M&M and M. The nutrient solution control methods had significantly effect on the cut-flower quality. In the M&M and M, flower length, fresh weight and root activity were higher than those with the other mineral nutrients control methods. The maximal efficiency of photochemistry (Fv/Fm) was higher for M&M, M and S than that with EC-A and EC-D. Based on the above results, it is highly recommended to control nutrient solution by mineral nutrient control methods (M&M and M) in a closed hydroponic system for single-node cutting rose, 'Versillia'.

To investigate the usefulness of natural plants, physicochemical characteristics, functional components and physiological activities of dodder(Cuscuta australis R.Brown) were experimented. The extraction of dodder was carried out at 60℃ in shaking bath with 10 times of distilled water for three hours. Harmful metals such as lead, cadmium and arsenic were not detected, but the content of mercury from dodder was 0.0004ppm in acceptable standards. The extraction yield was 23.45%, total content of phenolics equivalent to gallic acid was 699.8 mg/100g and total content of flavonoid equivalent to naringin was 373.8 mg/100g. 28 kinds of free amino acids were detected with the contents of 252mg/100g in the dodder extract, and the contents of anserine and sarcosine were analysed highest in all amino acids. From the comparison of physiological activities of dodder extract with those of ascorbic acid, total reducing power, electron donating ability based on DPPH radical scavenging and ferric reducing antioxidant power was equivalent to 88%, 56% and 40%, respectively, of ascorbic acid. The nitrite scavenging activity of dodder extract was 78% of ascorbic acid on pH 1.5, but the antioxidant index of dodder on perilla oil was about 4 times greater than that of ascorbic acid.

The purpoes of this thesis is to study the effect of the variation of the beginning date of the suspension of irrigation and the length of intermittent suspension period of irrigation in the paddy field on the growth and yield of rice, so as the provide a critical limit of saving irrigation water and an irrigation method to prevent drough damage in rice cultivation. In this experiment, the rice variety adopted was NONGRIM No.29. There were seven main test plot, each test plot having a different beginning date of the suspension of irrigation. A main test plot was susdivided into five small test plots, each having a different length of the suspension period of irrigation. The results obtained in this experiment are summarized as follows: 1. The number of tillers is controlled by the treatment of the suspension of irrigation, its beginning date being early of late. The reductive effects of beginning dates of suspension upon the number of tillers. investigated on July 30, are about 84% for the treatment suspended on July 8, 87% on July 12, and 92% on July 19, respectively, in comparison with the standard plot. However. the suspenion treatments after the foregoing dates does not affect the control of their numbers. On the other hand, the lengths of intermittent suspension periods influence highly on the number of tillers to be restrained considerably, the decrease ratio ranging from 91% to 80% Both treatments on dates and periods are so intermingled that the restraining effects of suspension periods become greater as the dates of its beginning are earlier. 2. The elongation of plant hieghts also restrained considerably by the longer periods and earlier dates of suspension treatments of irrigation. Especially, the effects of the lengths of suspension periods become more serious. 3. Heading dates are delayed by two to five days through the suspension treatments of irrigation. However, the heading stage ends almost on the same day without relation to the differences between the irrigation suspension treatments. In the test plot where the suspension date of irrigation comes after the young panicle forming stage, the heading stage ends one or two days later than in the standard test plot. 4. Both culm lengths and panicle lengths show significant differences in their values, i.e., their lengths are shorter, as the begining dates of irrigation suspension are earlier and the suspension periods are longer. 5. The earlier the beginning date and the longer the period of irrigation suspension, the less is the number of panicles per hill in comparison with the standard plot. 6. The earlier the beginning date and the longer the period of irrigation suspension, the higher is the significant difference in the number of kernels per panicle in comparison with that in the standard test plot, i.e., the less is the number of kernels per panicle. 7. The earlier the beginning date and the longer the period of irrigation suspension, the lighter are the weights of rough rice and straws per hill in comparison with those in the standard plot.
A study was planned to see if the Panax Ginseng has any influence upon the body weight of young rats. Thirty-two male an4 an equal number of female rats were used, whose body weight at the experiment ranged from 35 to 40 gm. The male as well as the female rats were divided into the ginseng and the saline groups of 16 rats each. For 54 consecutive days animals belonging to ginseng and the saline groups received every day 0.5 ml Per 100gm body weight of ginseng extract and an equal amount of saline, respectively, and had eir body weight measured every 3rd day. The ginseng extract was prepared by seething 300 gm of Korean Panax Ginseng with 95% ethyl alcohol on a boiling water bath for about 300 hr and dissolving 4 mg of the yield (52.2gm of dark brown substance) in 1 ml of saline. Results obtained were as follows: 1. For about 30 days from the beginning of drug administration, the body weight of both the male and female rats belonging to the ginseng groups did not differ significantly from that of the saline groups. 2. From around the 30th experimental day (body weight: about 130 gm) on, however, both the male and female rats receiving ginseng gained in body weight significantly more than the saline-group animals of both sexes did. 3. In the latter period, male rats of the ginseng as well as the saline groups, but especially the ginseng male animals, picked up significantly more weight compared with the female rats. It is concluded from the above results that in rats the ginseng helps gain in body weight regardless of sex.
