Observation of Atmospheric Water Vapors Using AIRS (AIRS를 이용한 대기 수증기 관측)

  • The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) aboard the Aqua satellite, which is one of the Earth Observing System satellites managed by National Aeronautics and Space Administration, provides global measurements of the water vapor in the atmosphere using infrared (IR) channels. In this paper, we restored precipitable water vapor (PWV) over a permanent GPS station in Incheon using the IR measurements of AIRS and compared the result with GPS-based PWV estimates. As a result, AIRS PWV had similar trends with GPS PWV; the bias of AIRS PWV against GPS PWV is 0.3 cm and root mean square error (RMSE) 0.7 cm. In addition, the correlation coefficient between AIRS PWV and GPS PWV was 0.89. Thus we conclude that the AIRS PWV reflects local characteristics of the water vapor content.

Study on Performance of Water Vapor-Permeation Through Hydrophilic Polymer Membranes (친수성 고분자 막을 이용한 수증기 투과 성능에 관한 연구)

  • In this study the membrane preparation and water vapor permeation of the hydrophilic polymer materials, polyaminosiloxane and polyhydroxylsiloxane, used as the coating materials for the preparation of asymmetric flat and hollow fiber membranes were investigated. And the water vapor permeation towards air permeation and their permselectivity were intensively studied for the resulting Resin A/Resin C (coupling agent) and Resin B/Resin C membranes. The water vapor permeability for 3 wt% Resin C introduced into Resin A (Resin A/Resin C) membrane was higher than for 1 and 5 wt% membranes and also water vapor permeability increased with increasing operating temperatures. In addition, at this content of 3 wt% Resin C, the absorption capability became maximum through dynamic equilibrium absorption experiment. Water vapor permeability, 43578 Barrer (1 Barrer = $10^{-10}cm^3(STP){\cdot}cm/cm^2{\cdot}s{\cdot}cmHg$) and 53000 Barrer, and the selectivity of $P(H_2O)P(Air)$, 101.3 and 102.6 were shown at 25 and $35^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • An apparatus for continuous measurements of sorption isotherm of dried food was manufactured to shorten the time required for equilibration. The apparatus was so designed that the temperature, air velocity and relative humidity in the experimental chamber could be controlled. The use of dynamic stream of conditioned air with a velocity of 0.2m/sec, instead of static atmosphere, allowed a faster equilibration of dried filefish muscle at $25^{\circ}C$. The mean time necessary for the equilibration of dried filefish muscle at the water activity of a given state to a higher water activity was about 45 hours. The monolayer moisture content of dried filefish muscle calculated from BET-equation was 0.092 kg water /kg dry matter at $25^{\circ}C$.

Diurnal changes of Tissue Water Relations in Two Allopatric Tree Species (이소적 두 수종의 수분관계 일변화)

  • Diurnal changes of microclimatic conditions and tissue water relations were measured at two sites where Carpinus laxiflora and C. cordata were allopatrically distributed. The microclimatic conditions at a site where C. laxiflora was distributed produced severe water stress condition during summer months. Daily maximum temperature reached $30.4^\circC$ and the highest vapor pressure deficit was 1.31 KPa when 13 rainless days were continued. During this period soil water content decreased to below the field capacity even at a depth of 20 cm and xylem pressure potential also decreased to ­2.04 MPa. However, turgor potential was maintained more than 0.4 MPa. Patterns of stomatal conductance were changed with evaporative demand and soil water availability. On the other hand, microclimatic conditions at a site where C. cordata was distributed were moderate water strees condition compared with those at a site C. laxiflora was distributed. Though soil water content was maintained above field capacity C. cordata showed a remarkable decrease in turgor potential and stomatal conductance throughout the experiment. These results indicate that there is a difference in habitat characteristics between the two species and C. laxiflora is more resistant than C. cordata to water stress.

Heating Characteristics of the Soils for the Application of Electrical Resistance Heating with Soil Vapor Extraction (전기 저항열을 이용한 유류 오염토 복원공정 적용을 위한 토양의 가열특성 연구)

  • This study was performed to evaluate the heating characteristics of soils for the application of electrical resistance heating process combined with soil vapor extraction. Laboratory tests were conducted to find out optimum heating conditions by the adjustment of electrical supply and electrode. Results show that fine soil particles are more efficient for electrical heating. As water content of soil increases, more efficient electrical heating is observed. However, as the soil is saturated with water above the soil porosity, decrease in the heating efficiency is observed. The higher the voltage, is and the shorter the distance between the electrodes is, the better the heating efficiency is. The soil contaminated by fuel is also more efficient than non-contaminated soil in electrical resistance heating. From the relationship between the intial electrical current and the conductivity obtained in this study, soil temperature by electrical heating can be estimated.

Preparation and Water Vapor Barrier Properties of PET/Nanohybrid PI Films (폴리에스테르/폴리이미드 나노복합필름의 제조 및 수분차단 특성)

  • We have prepared polyster/nanQhybridized polyimide films in the range of 1~9 wt% of organophilic synthetic layered silicate (STN). Firstly, poly(amic acid)/STN nanocomposite solutions were prepared via solution blending method in DMAc or THF/MeOH solution, and then cast on the polyester film followed by imidization reaction, thermal and chemical method repestively. XRD and TEM experiment showed that the STN was fully exfoliated through the polyimide matrix. Surface morphologies of nanohybridized polyimide films were characterized by AFM and thermal, mechanical properties were also confirmed by TGA, DMA and UTM each. And also, the water vapor permeabilities highly depended on the content of STN. The sample from chemical imidization route and THF/MeOH solvent system showed better water vapor barrier properties than thermal one and DMAc system.

Determination of Precipitable Water Vapor from Combined GPS/GLONASS Measurements and its Accuracy Validation (GPS/GLONASS 통합관측자료를 이용한 가강수량 산출과 정확도 검증)

  • Several observation equipments are being used for determination of the water vapor content and precipitable water vapor (PWV) because the water vapor is highly variable temporally and spatially. In this study, we used GNSS systems such as GPS and GLONASS in standalone and combined modes to compute PWV and validated their accuracy with respect to the results of other water-vapor monitoring systems. The other systems used were radiosonde and microwave radiometer, and the comparisons were convenient because all three systems were collocated at the test site. The differences of PWW were in the range of 0.6-3.4 mm in the mean sense, and their standard deviations were 1.0-3.8 mm. The relatively large difference of GNSS compared with the other two systems were believed to be caused by the fact that the GNSS antenna used in this study was the kind for which the international standard of phase center variations (PCV) calibration is not available. We expect better accuracy of PWV determination and improved availability of it through integrated data processing of GPS/GLONASS when an appropriate antenna with PCV correction model is used.

A Study on the Water-Vapor Sorption of Resin Treated Viscose Rayon - Characterization by the GAB and BET Equations - (수지처리된 비스코스 레이온 섬유의 흡습성에 관한 연구 - BET, GAB식에 의한 해석 -)

  • The water-vapor sorption isotherms of viscose rayon and of modified viscose rayon were studied to elucidate the change of sorptivity by the DMDHEU resin finish. To determine the sorption isotherms, moisture regains of the samples were measured at various humidities. The sorption isotherms were determined by the BET and GAB multilayer adsorption theories. The adsorption isotherm of the starting rayon was Brunauer Type II while with increasing resin content those of the DMDHEU-treated rayon became progressively more like Type IV. The DMDHEU-treated samples appeared to be hydrophilic due to the hydrophilicity of DMDHEU although moisture regains at higher humidities markedly decreased because of an impediment in swelling by crosslinkings. The $W_{m}$ value and surface area of crosslinked samples increased with increasing resin content. VR-R-6 which was the most heavily crosslinked viscose rayon had the highest $W_{m}$ and surface area values among all the samples. Relative sorption hysteresis was decreased as humidity increased for all samples. The untreated viscose rayon appeared to have a higher value than the DMDHEU-treated rayon.

  • The bubble behavior and the radiation mechanism from a laser-induced collapsing bubble were investigated theoretically using the Keller-Miksis equation for the bubble wall motion and analytical solutions for the vapor inside bubble. The calculated time dependent bubble radius is in good agreement with observed ones. The half-width of the luminescence pulse at the collapse point, which was calculated under assumption that the light emission mechanism is black body radiation from the vapor bubble agreed well with observed value of several nanoseconds. The gas content inside the vapor bubble was too small to produce the light emission due to bremsstrahlung.

Diamond Synthesis by W Filament CVD (W Filament CVD에 의한 Diamond의 합성)

  • Polycrystalline diamond films have been deposited on Si wafer Ly hot W filament CVD method using CH4H2 mixtures. The effects of surface pretreatment, W filament temperature, CH4 volume fraction, and addition of water vapor on the growth rate and morphology of the films were investigated. Surface pretretment was essential for depositing a continuous diamond film. Raising the filament temperature resulted in an increased growth rate and a better crystal quality of the film. As the methane content is varied from 0.5% to 5%, well-faceted crystals gradually transformed into spherical particles of non-diamond phase with a simultaneous increase in the growth rate. Addition of water vapor markedly improved the crystallinity to produce crystalline particles even with 5% methane mixture.
