  • To ensure hygienic safety of drinking water in a water storage tank, the concentrations of residual chlorine should be above a certain regulation level. In this study, we conducted model simulations to investigate the effects of temperature on residual chlorine in water storage tank conditions typically used in Seoul. For this, values of model parameters (decomposition rate constant, sorption coefficient, and evaporation mass transfer coefficient) were experimentally determined from laboratory experiments. The model simulations under continuous flow conditions showed that the residual chlorine concentrations were satisfied the water quality standard level (0.1 mg/L) at all the temperature conditions ($5^{\circ}C$, $10^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$). Meanwhile, when the tanks had a no flow condition (i.e., no tap-water influent due to a sudden shut-down), the concentrations became lower than the regulatory level after certain periods. The findings from this modeling works simulating Seoul's water storage tanks suggested disappearance rate of residual chlorine could be reduced through the tanks design optimization with maintenance of low water temperature, minimization of air flow and volume, suppression of dispersion and the use of wall materials with low sorption ability.

  • A reinforced concrete water tank is a typical functional liquid storage structure and cracks are the greatest threat to the liquid storage structure. Tanks are readily cracked due to seismic activity, thereby leading to the leakage of the stored liquid and a loss of function. In order to study the effect of cracks on liquid storage tanks, self-healing and leakage tests for bending cracks and through cracks in the walls of a reinforced concrete water tank were conducted. Material performance tests were also performed. The self-healing performance of bending cracks in a lentic environment and through cracks in a lotic environment were tested, thereby the self-healing width of bending micro-cracks in the lentic environment in the short term were determined. The through cracks had the capacity for self-healing in the lotic environment was found. The leakage characteristics of the bending cracks and through cracks were tested with the actual water head on the crack. The effects on liquid leakage of the width of bending cracks, the depth of the compression zone, and the acting head were determined. The relationships between the leakage rate and time with the height of the water head were analyzed. Based on the tests, the relationships between the crack characteristics and self-healing as well as the leakage were obtained. Thereby the references for water tank structure design and grading earthquake damage were provided.

  • In this paper, the author's team has carried out a comparative experimental study on the corrosion characteristics of Q235 steel commonly used in large-scale storage tanks under the specific bottom water environment found with Russian and Daqing crude oil. It was found that there is a certain degree of uniform or local corrosion on the tank floor depending on the kind of bottom water. The bottom water corrosion of Daqing crude oil is a uniform corrosion caused by carbon dioxide. While the Russian crude oil bottom water corrosion is clearly local corrosion caused by co-corrosion of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, here the corrosion rate is obviously higher than that caused by Daqing crude oil. There are two modes of storage tank inspection and maintenance that have been currently adopted by Chinese refining and chemical enterprises: a regular inspection mode and a API581-2016 risk-based detection mode. These modes have been effectively combined to form an intelligent tank inspection and maintenance mode, software tools to support this intelligent inspection and maintenance management have been developed.

  • A fundamental study on the under water harvest-type ice storage system and its temperature characteristics in ice storage system was performed experimentally. The experiments were conducted by changing the inlet refrigerant temperature of an evaporator to analyzing the thermal fluid motion inside the ice storage tank. From the experimental results, the cold storage characteristics were investigated by measuring the axial and radial temperature variations inside the ice storage tank with respect to the inlet and outlet refrigerant temperatures of an evaporator. In case of the under water harvest-type ice storage system, thermal fluid. motion inside the ice storage tank was shown differently in comparison with that of other ice storage systems. During the cooling storage process, there was no supercooling phenomenon in the ice storage tank. These results show the characteristic of this system and the possibility of application to other fields.

  • In this study, a simulation program was developed with heat transfer model in the thermal storage tank for a solar collector and burner combined heating and hot water supply system. Analysis was conducted with variation of operating condition and schedule to analyze performance of a hot water supply and panel heating system with a solar collector and burner combined thermal storage tank. The simulation program is divided two sections. One part is calculation of temperature variation of water which flows through the panel in the floor for heating of the residential house during 24 hours, and the other part is heat transfer calculation for the reaction time to get desired water temperature in the thermal storage tank. As results, light oil consumption and system performance during operation period were analyzed with variation of climate condition and with or without solar collector. Most of the case, oil could be saved about from 24 to 41% with installing the solar collector. The performance of the system is more dependent on radiation time of the solar collector rather than the intensity of the solar radiation which was adopted for the climate analysis.

  • Steel cylindrical tanks are widely used for the storage of hazardous substances of which leakage must be prevented under any circumstances. However, the dynamic response of the steel cylindrical liquid storage tank depends sensitively on the fluid-structure interaction and the vibration of the tank structure and necessitates clarification for the safety of the tank structure. This paper presents the results of shaking table tests performed to examine the dynamic behavior of a scaled cylindrical steel tank model considering the presence or not of fixed roof and added mass at the top of the tank for various fluid levels. The test results confirm the occurrence of both beam-type and oval-type vibration modes and show that the larger content of liquid inside the container amplified the acceleration along the height of the cylindrical tank. The oval-type vibration modes are seen to be more dominant in case of large water-to-structure mass ratio.

  • The performance of the cold latent heat storage is investigated by experiment and by a simplified analytic approach. The heat storage tank has eight horizontal circular tubes and one path of refrigerant evaporating tube. The phase change material in the heat storage tank is water which is frozen by evaporating refrigerant of refrigeration system and melts by the warm air in the heat storage tank. In the experiment, the performance has been studied by the various conditions including the initial water temperature on solidification and flow rate and temperature of air. The rate of recovered heat has been simulated by a simplified model and the results shows a good agreement. In solidification process, initial water temperature causes time delay corresponding to the sensible heat and it is found that the shape of evaporator is important. In melting process, the recovered heat rate from the heat storage tank is proportional to $Re^{0.8}(T_{bi}-T_f)$ of air where $T_{bi}$ and $T_f$ indicate temperatures of inlet air and phase change, respectively. And the deminishing rate of the recovered heat is higher for the higher heat rate.

  • Heat flow characteristics during hot water extraction process was studied experimentally. Data were taken at various outlet port type for the fixed inlet port type, inlet-outlet temperature differences and mass flow rates. In this study, the temperature distribution in a storage tank and an outlet temperature were measured to predict a degree of stratification in the storage tank, and a useful rate of hot water was analysed with respect to the variables dominating a extraction process. Experimental results show that the degree of stratification and useful rate of hot water are all high in a low flow rate in case of using modified distributor I (MDI) as the outlet port type.

  • To analyze and verify the effect of replacing thermal storage heater by a cascade cycle heat pump using midnight electricity was installed and tested at a customer's house in Wonju, Korea. The electric night storage heater is consist of 30kW electric heater and 2,700 liters of thermal storage water tank to supply hot water for warming house floor. The power for electric heater was cut off and hot water was only generated by cascade cycle heat pump. Current thermal storage water tank was not eliminated and electric heater wiring was modified. Some operation logic of the heat pump was also modified for proper operation. The required capacity of the heat pump and hot water temperature for given warming condition were estimated. The estimated capacity of heat pump was about 19kW and estimated hot water temperature for proper heating was at least $75^{\circ}C$.

  • The horizontal thermal storage tank with heat pipe which is suitable for the sensible heat storage system is able to store a hot water from the heat source such as heating pad efficiently and to supply a hot water to load rapidly. Therefore Arrangement of heating pad affects thermal flow and thermal storage efficiency. So, if effective arrangement is decided for condition of constant number of heating pad, the more rapid thermal flow effect and higher thermal storage efficiency is obtainable by active heat transfer. In this experiments, number of heating pad is ranged from three, five and nine, and when number of heating pad is constant, arrangement are two types of concentration-type and dispersion-type. As a result, for the case of concentration-type of heating pad, strong entrainment take place in horizontal thermal storage tank with heat pipe by active heat transfer and in the constant number of heating pad, the concentration-type has the higher efficiency with about 5∼6% than the dispersion-type. Therefore, when heating pad is equipted to horizontal thermal storage tank with heat pipe, concentration-type of heating pad is an efficient design in constant number. of heating pad.
