This study simulated the shock wave propagation through the tamping material between explosives and hole wall at blasting works and verified the effect of tamping materials. The Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE) method was selected to model the mixture of solid (Lagrangian) and fluid (Eulerian). The time series analysis was carried out during blasting process time. Explosives and tamping materials (air or water) were modeled with finite element mesh and the hole wall was assumed as a rigid body that can determine the propagation velocity and shock force hitting the hole wall from starting point (explosives). The numerical simulation results show that the propagation velocity and shock force in case of water were larger than those in case of air. In addition, the real site at blasting work was modeled and simulated. The rock was treated as elasto-plastic material. The results demonstrate that the instantaneous shock force was larger and the demolished block size was smaller in water than in air. On the contrary, the impact in the back side of explosives hole was smaller in water, because considerable amount of shock energy was used to demolish the rock, but the propagation of compression through solid becomes smaller due to the damping effect by rock demolition. Therefore, It can be proven that the water as the tamping media was more profitable than air.

This paper considers the electrical shock risk of the human body due to underwater leakage current in such places of public baths. Many submerged electric facilities in a public bath may create a severe electric shock hazard for the human body, since wet body in an accidentally energized bathtub can result in low electrical resistance through the human body for leakage or fault currents. Therefore a major consideration, in the context of electrical safety underwater, is the shock risk to the bather as a result of electric current flowing through the water in bathtub. To assess the electric shock risk and to analyze the potential distribution in a bathtub, 2 different situation cases are set up, then experimental and simulation methods are adopted. The validity of 2 cases of simulation and experiment data in a bathtub for electric distribution underwater are compared and analyzed. Also electric shock risk assessment underwater in a real public bathtub by simulation program package, Flux 3D, was conducted herein, and the results are presented and discussed.
The thermal fatigue behavior of alumina ceramics was investigated by water quenching method. Single-quench thermal shock tests were performed to decide the critical thermal shock temperature difference ($\Delta$Tc) which was found to be 225$^{\circ}C$ Cyclic thermal shock fatigue tests were performed at temperature diff-erences of 175$^{\circ}C$, 187$^{\circ}C$ and 200$^{\circ}C$ respectively. After cyclic thermal shock fatigue test the distributions of retained strength and crack were observed. Retained strength was measured by four point bending method and crack observation method bydye penetration. In terms of the retained strength distribution the critical number of thermal shock cycles(Nc) were 7 for $\Delta$T=200$^{\circ}C$, 35 for $\Delta$T=187$^{\circ}C$ and 180for $\Delta$T=175$^{\circ}C$ respec-tively. In terms of the crack observation the critical number of thermal shock cycles were 5 for $\Delta$T==200$^{\circ}C$ 20 for $\Delta$T==187$^{\circ}C$ and 150 for $\Delta$T=175$^{\circ}C$ respectively. The difference of Nc investigated by two different methods is due to the formation of the longitudinal cracks which had no effect on the four point bending strength. Therefore the thermal fatigue behavior of alumina ceramics could be more accurately described by the crack observation method than the retained strength measurement method.

Packed-bed reactor for removing ammonia was tested at different loading rates. Nitrifiers for ammonia removing was encapsulated in gel media which consisted of polyethlene glycol, alginate and activated carbon. The removal efficiency was nearly 100% when ammonia loading was $12g/m^3/hr$, and the maximum elimination capacity (EC) achieved on this study was $18g/m^3/hr$. The initial microbial portion of nitrifiers in the media was about 82% and it was increased to more than 90% at the end of the operation. Short-term shock loading test was carried out to survey the stability of the media. The inlet loading rates were varied from 2 to $20g/m^3/hr$. The packed-bed reactor overcame the shock loading i.e. removal efficiency recovered rapidly from about 80% to almost 100% within 6 hrs. The results of Live/Dead cell test showed that nitrifiers maintained there activity in the encapsulated media during the test and also against ammonia shock load.
Femtosecond laser induced shock generation in water and vitreous humor of enucleated porcine eyeball was investigated. When focusing the femtosecond laser into the liquid mediums, the acoustic waves with a frequency of about 15.6kHz could be observed by using wide-band microphone. The amplitude of the acoustic signals from water has attained a maximum under a laser power of about 5mW. Further increment of the power results in a decrement of the acoustic signals due to nonlinear optical process including filamentation of laser beam. We have further investigated the effect of femtosecond laser induced acoustic waves by applying the laser pulse into enucleated porcine eyeball. The comparative studies on both healthy and diseased eyeballs led us propose that the femtosecond laser pulses could be utilized as a novel tools for treatment of partially detached retina layers from their choroid structures.

This paper deals with an experimental study of the dynamics of an underwater bubbles and shock waves, generated by rapid underwater release of highly compressed gas. Aribag inflators, which are used for automobile's airbag system, are used to generate the extremely-rapid underwater gas release. Experimental studies of the complex underwater bubble dynamics as well as underwater shock wave were carried out in a specifically designed cylindrical water tank. The water tank is equipped with a high-speed camera and pressure sensors. The high-speed camera was used to capture the expansion and collapse of the gas bubble created by inflators, while pressure sensors was used to measure the underwater shock propagation and magnitudes. The experimental results were compared against the results of explosion of pentolite explosive. Several physical phenomena that has been observed and discussed, which are different from the explosive underwater explosion.
A code is developed to analyze a spherically symmetric underwater explosion. The arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE) Godunov scheme for two-phase flow is used to calculate numerical fluxes through moving control surfaces. For detonation gas of TNT and liquid water, the Jones-Wilkins-Lee(JWL) equation of states and the isentropic Tait relation are used respectively. It is suggested to use the Godunov variable to estimate the velocity of a material interface. The code is validated through comparisons with other results on the gas-water shock tube problem. It is shown that the code can handle generation of discontinuity and recovering of continuity in the normal velocity near the material interface during shock waves interact with the material interface. The developed code is applied to analyze a spherically symmetric underwater explosion. Repeated transmissions of shock waves are clearly captured. The calculated period and maximum radius of detonation gas bubble show good agreements with experimental and other numerical results.
The authors performed the underwater explosion analysis for the liquified oxygen tank - a kind of fuel tank of a mid-size submarine, and tried to verify the structural safety for this structure. First, the authors reviewed the theory and application of underwater explosion analysis, using a Structure-Fluid Interaction technique and its finite element modeling scheme. Next, the authors modeled the explosive and sea water as fluid elements, the LOX tank as structural elements, and the interface between the two regions as the ALE scheme. The effect on shock pressure and impulse of fluid mesh size and shape are also investigated. Upon analysis, it was found that the shock pressure due to explosion propagated into the water region, and hit the structure region. The plastic deformation and the equivalent stress were apparent at the web frame and the shock mount of LOX structure, but these values were acceptable for the design criteria.
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of heat shock protein (HSP) 90, 70, and 60 in chicken muscles and their possible relationship with quality traits of meat. Methods: The breast muscles from one hundred broiler chickens were analyzed for drip loss and other quality parameters, and the levels of heat shock protein (HSP) 90, 70, and 60 were determined by immunoblots. Results: Based on the data, chicken breast muscles were segregated into low (drip loss${\leq}5%$), intermediate (5%${\geq}9.5$) drip loss groups. The expression of HSP90 and HSP60 were significantly lower in the high drip loss group compared to that in the low and intermediate drip loss group (p<0.05), while HSP70 was equivalent in abundance in all groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: Results of this study suggests that higher levels of HSP90 and HSP60 may be advantageous for maintenance of cell function and reduction of water loss, and they could act as potential indicator for better water holding capacity of meat.

There is a high association of heat shock on the alteration of energy and lipid metabolism. The alterations associated with thermal stress are composed of gene expression changes and adaptation through biochemical responses. Previous study showed that Angelica gigas Nakai (AGN) root extract promoted adipogenic differentiation in murine 3T3-L1 preadipocytes under the normal temperature condition. However, its effect in heat shocked 3T3-L1 cells has not been established. In this study, we investigated the effect of AGN root hot water extract in the adipogenic differentiation of murine 3T3-L1 preadipocytes following heat shock and its possible mechanism of action. Thermal stress procedure was executed within the same stage of preadipocyte confluence (G0) through incubation at $42^{\circ}C$ for one hour and then allowed to recover at normal incubation temperature of $37^{\circ}C$ for another hour before AGN treatment for both cell viability assay and Oil Red O. Cell viability assay showed that AGN was able to dose dependently (0 to $400{\mu}g/mL$) increase cell proliferation under normal incubation temperature and also was able to prevent cytotoxicity due to heat shock accompanied by cell proliferation. Confluent preadipocytes were subjected into heat shock procedure, recovery and then AGN treatment prior to stimulation with the differentiation solution. Heat shocked preadipocytes exhibited reduced differentiation as supported by decreased amount of lipid accumulation in Oil Red O staining and triglyceride measurement. However, those heat shocked preadipocytes that then were given AGN extract showed a dose dependent increase in lipid accumulation as shown by both evaluation procedures. In line with these results, real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blot analysis showed that AGN increased adipogenic differentiation by upregulating heat shock protection related genes and proteins together with the adipogenic markers. These findings imply the potential of AGN in heat shock amelioration among 3T3-L1 preadipocytes through heat shock factor and proteins augmentation and enhanced adipogenic marker expression.
