Provision of safe, accessible, and good water quality in the community is an important step towards reducing various waterborne illnesses. However, improving the quality of water should include spreading awareness to the public regarding the importance of cleaning their household water tanks. The aim of this study was to investigate the microbial quality of water of household water tanks in Dubai. The water samples from household water tanks were collected from forty houses, and a questionnaire was given to the residents to determine the history of the water tanks. The membrane filtration technique was used to quantify heterotrophic and total coliform bacteria on plate count agar and the violet red bile agar respectively. The overall results of this study have shown that 18 out of total 40 household water tanks contained different types of bacteria concentration level beyond local and widely accepted international standards. The overall results of this study indicated that there is a lack of awareness among residents regarding the importance of maintaining proper sanitation and hygiene of the household water tanks.

To improve the water quality, particularly for sea bathers, the behaviour of wastewater from sewage outfalls in water adjacent to Swansea, UK, was studied using a mathematical model. The water quality in the sewage receiving basin was determined using factors like the outfall diffuser location(distance from land boundary), sewage treatment scheme, discharge time, and bacteria decay rate, etc. With respect to these factors, an optimal strategy for sewage discharge was then investigated to minimize bacteria levels along the bathing beaches. As water quality criteria, predicted faecal coliform levels were monitored along the coast adjacent to the outfall locations. The resultant values were compared with EC Mandatory(<2000, 95 % of 20 samples) and Guideline Standards(< 100, 80 % of 20 samples). For the advective-diffusion equation, the non linear advective terms were represented using the ULTIMATE algorithm and the third-order accurate QUICKEST scheme to avoid numerical diffusion. Details of the simulation results are then presented as an optimal policy for sewage discharge in the region.
This study investigated characteristics of rainfall and water quality in Saemangeum area with attention to temporal and spatial distributions. A high variability in rainfall was noted during July and August. The temporal analysis of water quality data indicated that DO and TN as well as BOD, COD and SS were within national standards except for increased concentrations during spring and summer, unlike TP values that indicated poor water quality. Standard deviation showed a high variability in SS among the seasons most especially during summer. The high dispersion indicated variability in the chemical composition of pollutants where the temporal and spatial variations caused by polluting sources and/or seasonal changes were most evident for BOD and COD during winter and spring. The box plots and bar charts showed steadily low concentrations of BOD, COD, TN and TP except within Iksan and notable significant variations in SS concentrations among the monitoring stations. Thus, high pollution levels requiring intervention were identified in Mangyeong river basin with particular concern for areas represented by Iksan station. It was noted that Iksan received a considerable amount of rainfall which meant high runoff which could explain the significant pollution levels revealed in the water quality spatial distribution. Major pollution contributing pollutants within Saemangeum area were identified as SS, BOD, COD and TN. Therefore the present results could be used as a guideline for the temporal and spatial distributions analysis of both rainfall and water quality in Saemangeum watershed.
Livestock wastewater is being discharged without treatment from Hasen's pig farm cluster in WangGoong (WG) area into the Iksan Stream, eventually flowing into the ManGyung (MG) at the upstream junction. Although it is well known that before discharge, wastewater must satisfy the pig slurry discharge standards; because of ongoing remodeling, proper treatment is not being performed. According to public records, wastewater from the WG pig farm cluster is responsible for 3.6% of MG River pollution and 2.0% of the SaeManGuem (SMG) Reservoir pollution. As a result, upstream water treatment quality has become primary concern for development of the SMG project. All physicochemical constituents and pathogenic microbes, such as chemical oxygen demand ($COD_{Cr}$), biochemical oxygen demand ($BOD_5$), total suspended solids (TSS), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorous (TP), fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli and Salmonella at the effluent of WG Plant (S-1) exceed the effluent standards. This is mainly due to insufficient wastewater treatment: the WG Plant is under renovation to increase water purification efficiency. By comparing the water quality at the S-7 junction, where the the Iksan Stream (pig farms) and the Wanggoong Stream (no pig farms) merge, it is clear that farming facilities and improper treatment can critically affect surrounding water quality. While it is clear throughout this study that the level of all physicochemical parameters and pathogenic microbes along the Stream decreased due to sedimentation, biodegradation and/or dilution. An alarming problem was discovered: the existence of pathogenic microbe count(E coli, Salmonella) in the lagoon wastewater and the stream water. Not only were high concentrations of these pathogens themselves found, but the potential existence of more serious pathogens could rise to more dangerous conditions.

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of the pH of irrigation water on the growth, yield, and grain quality of rice. It acquire fundamental knowledges to set up irrigation water quality standards. The pot experiment was conducted with 5 treatments using irrigation waters with various pH values(control, 4, 6, 8, 10) and replicated four times with randomized block design. The results of this study showed that the uptake of N, P, and K, Ripened grain ratio and yield of rice tended to be reduced at the irrigation water of pH 4 and pH 10. P uptake, Ripened grain ratio and yield of rice at pH 4 water were significantly lower than the control. K uptake at pH 10 water was significantly lower than the control. Plant height, SPAD value and protein content of rice were not affected by the pH of irrigation water.
Monthly mean values for EDTA hardness in the Han River water were determined for March 1966 through May 1967. The hardness was retained a range of 22-59 mg/L the maximum value of 59 mg/L was approached in the months of mid-winter, indicating a seasonal variation. The annual ranges of Ca and Mg were 3.7-9.1 mg/L, 1.5-10.4 mg/L, respectively. The annual range of Mg:Ca ratio was 0.18-2.60. And the hardness correlated closely with Mg volume. In Korea, fortunately, most river waters are not yet suffering from damaging pollution. We must try to establish our water quality criteria based on scientific data, and make research recommendations for the following water uses; public water supplies, aquatic life and wildlife, industry, recreation and aesthetics.
The eco-hydrodynamic model was used to estimate the environmental capacity in Gamak Bay. It is composed of the three-dimensional hydrodynamic model for the simulation of water flow and ecosystem model for the simulation of phytoplankton. As the results of three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation, the computed tidal currents are toward the inner part of bay through Yeosu Harbor and the southern mouth of the bay during the flood tide, and being in the opposite direction during the ebb tide. The computed residual currents were dominated southward flow at Yeosu Harbor and sea flow at mouth of bay, The comparison between the simulated and observed tidal ellipses at three station showed fairly good agreement. The distributions of COD in the Gamak bay were simulated and reproduced by an ecosystem model. The simulated results of COD were fairly good coincided with the observed values within relative error of 1.93%, correlation coefficient(r) of 0.88. In order to estimate the environmental capacity in Gamak bay, the simulations were performed by controlling quantitatively the pollution loads with an ecosystem model. In case the pollution loads including streams become 10 times as high as the present loads, the results showed the concentration of COD to be $1.33{\sim}4.74mg/{\ell}(mean\;2.28mg/{\ell})$, which is the third class criterion of Korean standards for marine water quality In case the pollution loads including streams become 30 times as high as the present loads, the results showed the concentration of COD to be $1.38{\sim}7.87mg/{\ell}(mean\;2.97mg/{\ell})$, which is the third class criterion of Korean standards for marine water quality. In case the pollution loads including streams become 50 times as high as the present loads, the results showed the concentration of COD to be $1.44{\sim}9.80mg/{\ell}(mean\;3.56mg/{\ell})$, which is the third class criterion of Korean standards for marine water quality.

This study was conducted to identify runoff characteristics of pollutants using flow duration curve(FDC) and load duration curve(LDC) in Youngbon A watershed during 2009~2011. A flow rate and pollutant load in the study watershed were estimated by equation of stage-discharge and discharge-loads rating curve. From these methods, BOD, T-N, and T-P have evaluated whether water quality standards would have attained. Results showed that BOD loads of about 50% plotted above the LDC, while T-N and T-P loads of about 50% plotted below the curve. It means that BOD of about 50% have exceeded the water quality criteria, while T-N and T-P of about 50% have complied with the water quality standards. Meanwhile, BOD, TN and T-P loads plotted above the LDC of low flows, implying that they were more affected by point pollution sources than nonpoint pollution sources in the study watershed.
The attainment ratios of the water quality goals of the 114 mid-watershed representative stations, examined during the period2011 to 2015, were evaluated in the study. Of the four major river basins, the attainment ratio on water quality goal of the Geum River basin turned out to be the lowest. As a result of formal evaluation of the attainment ratios of BOD, COD and TOC, it was found that the attainment ratio of COD was much lower than that of BOD and TOC (I a circumstance thought to be caused by the higher COD/BOD and COD/TOC ratios of the water quality of the river than those of the environmental water quality standard). As well, higher COD/BOD and COD/TOC of wastewater discharged from point and non-point sources (other than those of the environmental water quality standards) might possibly represent one of the reasons. We also compared attainment ratio between the main stream and tributaries, which indicated that the higher attainment ratio was present in the main stream. The attainment ratio is also documented as more significant in the winter season than the summer season, possibly due to the contribution of non-point pollutants swept in by rain during the summer season during documented periods of high precipitation. Thus, water quality management in summer season and improvement of water quality of the tributaries might be important as a means of increasing attainment ratio on water quality goal.

As various accidents have occurred in underground spaces, we aim to improve the quality validation standards and methods as specified in the Regulations on Producing Integrated Map of Underground Spaces devised by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of the Republic of Korea for a high-quality integrated map of underground spaces. Specifically, we propose measures to improve the quality assurance of pipeline-type underground facilities, the so-called life lines given their importance for citizens' daily activities and their highest risk of accident among the 16 types of underground facilities. After implementing quality validation software based on the developed quality validation standards, the adequacy of the validation standards was demonstrated by testing using data from two-dimensional water supply facilities in some areas of Busan, Korea. This paper has great significance in that it has laid the foundation for reducing the time and manpower required for data quality inspection and improving data quality reliability by improving current quality validation standards and developing technologies that can automatically extract errors through software.
