  • Over the past 40 years, the public sector has continued to invest in the sewage treatment plants (STPs) in Korea. Currently, the domestic sewage treatment rate is over 90% with the enhancement of operating efficiency of the STPs, and water quality of major rivers has been continuously improved. However, COD and T-N indicators are stagnating or slightly worsening, and though advanced treatment facilities are installed in most of the STPs, there is a limit to the removal of nutrients. Since there are a lot of water pollution sources in the vicinity of the watershed because of high population density in Korea, it is essential to reduce the inflow of the nutrients in order to prevent the eutrophication of the rivers and lakes. While the effluent T-P standard in STPs has greatly strengthened since 2012, which results in the considerable investment for the improvement of treatment process in STPs for the last few years, it is necessary to strengthen the T-N standards, as the effluent standard of T-N has been maintained at 20 mg/L since 2002. In this study, based on the analysis of the effluent T-N standard status of major industrialized countries, and the domestic nitrogen load in public waters, the option of appropriate T-N standard level is reviewed, and the required investment costs and the effect of strengthening the standard are estimated.

  • The analysis of groundwater quality in Kyungnam Province was conducted using monitoring results obtained during 1994. According to the analysis, most heavy metals and pesticides listed in Korean drinking water standards were not detected in Kyungnam Province groundwater, but arsonic and volatile organics such as TCE and PCE were detected. Four inorganic contaminants were detected and frequency of violating the standards was in order of $NO_3-N, F^-, As, NH_3-N$. Of organics, TCE and PCE were the only contaminants detected. TCE more frequently violated the standards than PCE. Correlation was investigated among contaminants detected in Kyungnam Province groundwater. The correlation results showed that high correlation existed among dissolved solids, hardness, and $SO_4^{2-}$.

  • There are many possibilities that may lead to low quality of drinking water Recently, some unknown deposits in tap water raised a lot of public concern regarding the safety of drinking water in Seoul. We analyzed the quality of tap water from several areas of Seoul, including the area where public complaints about tap water were high. The results shows that the quality of tap water in Seoul was good, well below the environmental standards. Only the tap water from the area with high public complaints showed turbidity higher than that of other area. Also, result shows that component of deposit in tap water was Al, Fe, Mn, and Zn. Based on the research result we propose several measures that might help to reduce the amount of deposit in tap water as follows : 1 Using coagulant aid when coagulating or adjusting pH when filtering. 2. Replacing old water pipeline with new corrosive- resistant one. 3. Increasing water treatment efficiency by enhancing water treatment system such as automation of water treatment system adjusting production capacity, and improving operational condition of filler basin. 4. Chlorine disinfection at the distribution reservoir would help maintaining the same pH level and chlorine concentration throughout the water pipeline and reduce corrosion of pipe.

  • Preeminent water treatment plans are essential to preserve the water quality of aquatic biotopes. Previous studies have not been sufficient to provide cost-effective maintenance method since they focused only on the purification of deteriorated water that requires a continuous supply of clean water. This study proposes an economical method of water quality maintenance using water treatment media block constructed vertically using porous ceramics, zeolite, and river pebble. The water treatment media block does not require a separate purification area because it functions as a purifier within the ecological pond which can maximize the biotope area. To evaluate the performance of the water treatment media block, we longitudinally tracked the change of water quality indicators (pH, TDS, COND, DO, T-P, T-N, COD) suggested by Water Environment Standards, Ministry of Environment, Republic of Korea. We compared the water quality of one control (A: general ecological pond composition method of the laminated structure) and two experimental groups (B: a combination of aquatic plants and a water treatment media block, C: a water treatment media block only). As a result, we confirmed that the water treatment media block is an efficient and economical method to maintaining the water quality of the ecological pond for a long time. The water treatment media block will be a great help in providing a better aquatic biotope space for aquatic insects and fishes living in clear water.

  • The concentration of radioactive elements was measured from the groundwater samples of Taejeon Area. U and Rn concentrations of very high level were detected from many places, especially around Yusung. These levels are much higher than the concentration standards for the drinking water proposed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. However, in Korea, there are no standard levels for the radioactive elements in drinking water yet. We think that it is necessary to provide such standards as soon as possible, and that the determination of radioactive elements in groundwater should be included in the routine analysis items for the drinking water quality, because many people currently use such relatively high level radioactive groundwater as their drinking water, especially around Yusung area.

  • The purposes of this study actually measure to the dimension and the quality of material play equipment's examine whether they meet safety standards or not, and intend to offer basic data to present proper safety standards concerning the dimension of play equipment in the end. The subjects for this study were 59 outdoor playgrounds, 30 among them located in apartment sites and the remainder did in residential districts. The time of actual measurement was in June 1999, and June 2000. Data were analyzed into frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation by using SPSSWIN program. The main results were as follows.: First, more than half of playgrounds were assessed for being traffic hazards due to the adjacent streets. And they were hardly equipped with the toilet and drinking water facilities, but were almost equipped with the shade of a tree and benches. Second, it was caused in inconvenience of children's use and difficulty of play equipments'management, since the quality of play equipments materials was consisted of wood or metal. Third, the standards for swing and slide were established in detail and actual measurement's results were suitable to standards'value as well, whereas the standards for seesaw and climber were not in detail and they did not design or install suitably.

  • In order to quantify the effect of the newly established the Total Water Load Management System in Sapgyo watershed, this study predicted the achievement of the target water quality at each unit watershed and the water quality according to the flow section. The HSPF model, which is the watershed runoff model, was constructed and operated based on 2015, and the water quality was predicted by inputting the loads in final target year(2030). The Load Duration Curve (LDC) was created using the simulated results of base year and target year. As a result of plotting water quality by flow conditions, it was simulated to be close to the BOD target with a difference of 0.1 ~ 0.2 mg/L in all three watersheds during the mid-range flow interval (40 ~ 60%). In case of T-P, although the target water quality was not set, the water quality was improved by Cheonan A 46%, Kokgyo A 29% and Namwon A 25%. The Muhan and Sapgyo river basins meet the target grade of middle-watershed standards. The improvement effect will be positive, as water quality, which achieves the target of Total Load Management System and the target grade of the middle-watershed standards will be expected to flow into the Sapgyo lake.

  • Recently, users' complaints on drinking water quality are increasing according to emerging interest in the drinking water service issues such as pipe aging and various water quality accidents. In the case of drinking water quality complaints, not only the water pollution but also the inconvenience on the chlorine residual for disinfection are included, thus various efforts, such as rechlorination treatment, are being attempted in order to keep the chlorine concentration supplied evenly. In this research, for a more accurate water quality simulation of water distribution network, the water quality reaction coefficients were estimated, and an optimization method of chlorination/ rechlorination scheduling was proposed consideirng satisfaction of water quality standards and chlorine residual equalization. The proposed method was applied to a large-scale real water network, and various chlorination schemes were comparatively analyzed through the grid search algorithm and optimized based on the suitability and uniformity of supplied chlorine residual concentration.

  • The in situ observations and the seawater analyses were conducted for 3 years from August 1996 to August 1999 in order to elucidate and evaluate seasonal variations of marine water quality and trophic state in Mokpo harbour of Korea. Compared the seasonal seawater qualities of Mokpo harbour with the OECD standards of trophic classification in parameters such as Secchi depth, dissolved inorganic nitrogen, phosphate phosphorus and chlorophyll-a, the trophic level of seawater in Mokpo harbour was evaluated to be in mesotrophic or eutrophic state through all 4 seasons and to be in eutrophic state, particularly In summer. The estimation of pollution index by eutrophication showed the seawater quality of Mokpo harbour to deteriorate and fall under the regular grades through all 4 seasons, although the seawater quality of Mokpo harbour was evaluated to be equivalent to the second or third class of the Korean seawater quality standards in view of COD values. The results of eutrophication index estimation showed the high potentiality of red tide occurrence In Mokpo harbour, particularly in summer or fall. In the light of the average atomic ratio of N/P in seawater, the limiting nutrient factor against the growth of phytoplankton was concluded to be phosphorus rather than nitrogen in Mokpo Harbour.

  • The tributary water quality and flowrate monitoring result, which is fundamental data for the establishment of the water environmental policy, is used as very important data for the implementation of TMDL. This study introduced how to use the tributary water quality and flowrate monitoring data for the analysis of the watersheds, the satisfactory assessment of water quality standards in the watersheds, the selection of watersheds for the establishment of the implementation plan, and the selection of the tributary catchments for improving the water quality using a stream grouping method. According to the analytical results of tributary catchment using water quality and flowrate monitoring data of thirty-seven tributaries in the Geum-River watershed at Chungcheongnam-do, the value of flowrate in the tributaries, which is located in the middle-lower Geum-River watershed, was greater than the other areas and the concentration of the water pollutants regardless of water quality parameters in the tributaries at Nonsancheon catchment was relatively higher than the other areas. The problems, which have the determination of satisfaction of water quality standards and selection of target watersheds for establishment of the implementation plan regardless of the water quality of tributary in the watershed due to the water quality and flowrate monitoring results of the main river, were improved use of the results of tributary water quality and flowrate monitoring. Also, the tributary catchments for improving the water quality, according to stream grouping method based on the results of tributary water quality and flowrate monitoring, were selected. In the Geum-River watershed at Chungcheongnam-do, the tributary in the Nonsancheon, Byeongcheoncheon, Seokseongcheon, Jocheon catchments, which has a large flow and a high concentration of water pollutants, should be preferentially selected for improving the water quality of the tributary in accordance with the reduction of the source of pollution.
