Microbial activity of biofilm formed on the surface of gravels from intertidal zone was estimated using an aerobic respirometer system, and compared with that of suspended marine microorganisms contained in a near shore water, The maximum oxygen uptake rate of the suspended marine microorganisms was 0.15mg$O_2$/L/hr, indicating the potential of purification of polluted near shore water. For the gravels from the intertidal zone, the maximum uptake rate of oxygen was affected by the vertical positions, but their gross value was 0.77mg $O_2$/L/hr, which was around 5.1 times higher than the purification potential of polluted near shore water by the microorganisms contained in the near shore water. The nitrogen removed by the gravels from the intertidal zone and the marine microorganisms was about 1/20-1/39 times of the total consumption of oxygen, which was similar to that of the phosphate. The gravel intertidal zone contained lots of particulate organics, over than that in the near shore water, and this was confirmed from the large difference between total oxygen consumption and the removed soluble COD in the microbial activity test. This indicates that the gravel intertidal zone plays an important role in controlling the non-point source pollutants from land, as well as self-purification of polluted near shore water by trapping and degrading the particulate organics.
Natural rivers have water purification functions called Gravel Contact Oxidation Process, which decontaminate river water by biological absorption, oxidation and degradation on riverbed gravels. This function has been developed and applied to many small/medium-sized urban rivers in Japan as one of the direct river water purification methods. However the method hasn't been verified in the tropics, which have different climate conditions and river characteristics. A preliminary experiment carried out at a polluted urban tributary in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where an increasing attention has been paid to river environment, showed a good applicability to the tropical conditions as a technically practical water purification measure with some maintenance cares for sludge management.

In this paper it is concerned to develop control method using jar-test results in order to predict the optimum dosage of coaglant, PAC(PoliAluminum Chloride). Considering the relations with the reactions with the reaction of coagulation and flocculation, the five independent variables ( e, g, turbidity of raw water, water turbidity in flocculators, temperature, pH, and alkalynity) are selected out of parameters and they are put into calculation to develop a neural network model for PAC dosing process in water purification system. This model is utilized to predict optimum dosage of PAC. That is, the optimum dosage of PAC is searched in neural network model for PAC dosing process to minimize the water turbidity in flocculators. This searching is implemented by means of expert heuristics. The efficacy of the proposed contorl schemem and feasibility of acquired neural network model for PAC dosing contorl in water purification system is evaluated by means of computer simulation.
This study was performed for the application of porous concrete blocks and aquatic plants for the water purification in small urban stream. This study investigated the ability of water purification according to various environments, algae and aquatic plants. When the porous concrete was used as contact media, the average removal efficiencies of SS, BOD and COD were 85~95%, 50~60% and 65~75%, respectively. Also, when the porous concrete and aquatic plants was used the average removal efficiency of SS, BOD and COD were 90~95%, 60~70% and 70~80%, respectively. As the results, average removal efficiency of total nitrogen, at the condition of the porous concrete and aquatic plants, was about 40-50%, then, that of total phosphorus was about 60-70%.
Presently, aquatic plants are used for the water purification in inland water. This study was carried out to investigate the water purification effect of aquatic plants, Oenanthe javanica and Typha angustata, The experiment was conducted in outdoor flowing water was conducted for ten days, Water quality was measured in terms of water temperature, COD(chemical oxygen demand), SS(suspended solids), Total N, Total P. The results of field experimentation showed that hydraulic retention time was the earliest in July and August 2003, and there were not any particular changes of monthly water temperature in inflow water and outflow water. As we look at the changes taken place in inflow water and outflow water throughout the whole experiment period, the change of water quality in summer was salient, especially SS removal ratio showed distinguished change as $25\%$, when the pebble filter and aquatic were attached to it. The removal rate of COD, total N total P were $14,7\%,\;8\%\;and\;9\%$, respectively. In relating the length of water extension to the change in water quality, the water quality tended to get lower generally in proportion to hydraulic retention time.
When the costal zone surrounded by a breakwater has a narrow vertical opening, currents in the vicinity of a narrow entrance can result in a jet flow, coinciding with the tide. Such a Tidal-Jet Generator(TJG) can change the water mass distribution and transport processes in the domain of influence of the jet. Also, it can decrease the residual time of them. In the present study, the water purification utilizing tidal jets in the coastal zone over constant bathymetry are estimated numerically, using a finite-difference numerical scheme, named the NS-MAC-TIDE method, which isbased on the fully 3D Navier-stokes(NS) equations. The shear velocity near the inlet of the TJG are predicted from the flow field simulation, and are assessed qualitatively with the development of scouring or sediment that is caused by the change of diffusion or sweeping flowup from the seabed of sediment particles. Finally, through solving a transport equation of concentration, the residual time related on mass transport processes and the flushing mechanism for water purification are investigated.
Recently great efforts and investment have been made in order to achieve economical production by applying new methods like minimization of man-Power into construction field. This paper describe the performance of water purification, to which living organisms can adapt, and the physical properties of porous concrete with continuous voids. Although conventional concrete has been regarded as a destroyer of nature, water and air can pass freely through concrete when it is made porous by forming continuous voids. this not only enables plants to vegetables, but also makes it possible for microscopic animals and plants, including bacteria, to attach to and inhabit uneven surface as well as internal voids when the concrete is provided in a natural water area or waterside area. As a result, Porous concrete using recycled aggregate improved the performance of water purification.
Nitrogen(N) and phosphorus(P) in surface streams mainly lead to euthrophication. It aggravates water quality and consequently increases the purification costs. As a resolution of water contamination caused by household drainage through irrigation route by 70% of the 1,300 community residents in Eum-Am Myun, Seo-San city, was implemented biological self-purification method by growing Oenanthe Javanica along the polluted water tunnel. The contaminated water was efficiently purified after passing the dropwort field; DO conc. of effluent water was increased 8.3∼61.9% after through the drop wort field. HRT of experiment system was changed 0.05∼1.50/day. 50% of BOD was eliminated at the range above 12 mg/l of Influent BOD conc. Also, 50% of COD was eliminated at the range above 30 mg/l of Influent COD conc. Finnally, the influent T-N loading at range below 1.5 g/m$^3$/d reduced 50% of Influent T-N conc., and so did influent T-P loading at the range below 0.03 g/m$^3$/dwas reduced 50% of Influent T-P conc.
Membrane filtration is a promising technology for efficient solid/liquid separation in water purification. In FY 1991, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Japanese Government launched a comprehensive research project "MAC 21" for development of membrane technology and its application to public water supply. The project was conducted by the Water Purification Process Association (WPPA), under the supervision of the Institute of Public Health. By the research project from FY 1991 to FY 1993, we confirmed that microfiltration (MF)/ultrafiltration (UF) technology was applicable to water purification and MF/UF was a effective method for the removal of such contaminants as particulate matter and coliforms. The Guideline Committee organized under the Technical Committee prepared a the guidelines on application of membrane system to small-scale public water supplies, based on the results as written above. The guidelines has been published in Dec., 1994 by WPPA.4 by WPPA.
The purpose of this study was to analyze water treatment characteristics, including the efficiency of removing algae from water purification plants, by installing a demonstration facility for decontamination of algae, including natural algae remover injection equipment, in the water purification plant. Jar-test showed that the optimum injection of natural decontaminant was 20 mg/L. Of the water contaminant treatment efficiency of the intake and water purification plants, Chl-a averaged 74.0% elimination efficiency from $5.0mg/m^3$ to $1.3mg/m^3$ and the maximum treatment efficiency was 91.5% removal efficiency when the inflow concentration of Chl-a was $11.8mg/m^3$. In addition, 51.2% and 47.1% of the taste and odor indicator items, geosmin and 2-MIB, resulted from the overgrowth and decaying of algae, respectively, to identify toxic substances and odor reduction effects. In addition, elimination efficiencies of SS and Turbidity materials were higher than 70.0%. In the injection of natural algae remover, no effects such as sudden changes in water quality due to secondary reactions were found, and appropriate levels were maintained under water treatment conditions.
