Dry matter allocation characteristics of Calystegia soldanella, grown in pots, was analysed to assess its plasticity in response to water-stressed conditions. As water was withheld leaf water potential between the two watering treatments was similar during the first 6 days, followed by a rapid decrease in water-stressed plants. The minimum leaf water potential was -1.50 MPa on day 15 and the maximum leaf water potential was about -0.5 MPa on day 0 in water-stressed plants. In well-watered plants leaf water potential was maintained almost consistently throughout the experiment. There was no significant difference in plant dry weight between the two watering treatments for 9 days after the start of experiment and that was remarkably increased thereafter, compared with that remained without any increase in water-stressed plants. In dry mass partitioning, however, the water-stressed plants showed a great plasticity, showing that there were 1.81, 1.35 and 0.81 times increase in root, stem and leaf, respectively. Dry mass partitioning in well-watered plants varied from 2% to 5%. The difference of dry mass partitioning between the two watering treatments was reflected in leaf mass per unit area (LMA) and root/shoot (R/S) ratio. LMA in water-stressed plants was lower than that in well-watered plants, while R/S ratio in water-stressed plants was higher in well-watered plants. This means that the water-stressed plants reduced its leaf area and increased dry mass partitioning into root and stem during the progress of soil drying. These results indicate that Calystegia soldanella inhabiting in sand dune cope with water stress with high plasticity which can adjust its dry mass partitioning according to soil water conditions.
An experimental study is carried out to investigate the effects of air and water mass flow rates on cooling characteristics of mist impinging jet on a flat plate. Experiments are conducted with air mass flow rates from 0.0 to 3.0 g/s, and water mass flow rates from 5.0 to 20.0 g/s. An air-atomizing nozzle is used for the purpose of controlling air and water mass flow rates. In this study, a new test section is designed to obtain local heat transfer coefficient distributions. Heat transfer characteristics of the mist impinging jet are explained with the aid of flow visualization. Surface temperature and heat transfer coefficient distributions become more uniform as air mass flow rate increases, and that the increases in water flow rate mainly enhance cooling performance. Air mass flow rate weakly influences averaged heat transfer coefficient when water mass flow rate is low, but averaged heat transfer coefficient increases remarkably as air mass flow rate in case of high water mass flow rate.

An experiment is conducted to investigate the effect of air and water mass flow rates on cooling characteristics of mist impinging jet on a flat plate. The air mass flow rate ranges from 0.0 to 3.0 g/s, and water mass flow rates from 5.0 to 20.0 g/s. An air-atomizing nozzle is used fur the purpose of controlling air and water mass flow rates. The test section is designed distinctively from previous works to obtain local heat transfer coefficient distributions. Heat transfer characteristics of the mist impinging jet are explained with the aid of flow visualization. Surface temperature and heat transfer coefficient distributions become more uniform as air mass flow rate increases. The water flow rate provides substantial contribution to enhancement of cooling performance. On the other hand, The air mass flow rate weakly influences the averaged heat transfer rate when the water mass flow rate is low, but the averaged heat transfer rate Increases remarkably with the air mass flow rate in case of the high water mass flow rate.
$^{14}$C uptake experiments were carried out in and around the cold water mass in the southern part of the Korean East Sea in August and October 1995 to assess spatial and seasonal variability of primary productivity and its relation to physical and chemical factors. The cold and high saline water mass in the bottom layer extended upward to the surface layer and developed along the eastern coast of Korea in August. Chlorophyll-a concentration was maintained high in the cold water mass through August to October and its maximum concentration was 6.3 ${\mu}$g 1$^{-1}$ at Stn. 209-4 in August. Primary productivity and daily primary productivity ranged from 0.29 to 8.02 mgC m$^{-3}$ hr$^{-1}$ and from 58.3 to 63.1 mgC m$^{-2}$ d$^{-1}$, respectively, throughout the study period. Primary productivity of the cold water mass was higher than that of offshore waters in both summer and autumn seasons. P$_{max}$ and I$_{max}$ of the cold water mass in August were higher than those in October, except Stn. 208-5. These results suggest that high primary productivity in the cold water mass may be established by the upwelled nutrients and light adaptaion to convected phytoplankton due to upwelling of the bottom waters.

This paper presents the heat recovery performance of water fluidized-bed heat exchanger. Temperature and humidity ratio of waste gas are considered as important parameters in this study. Therefore, the heat recovery rate through water fluidized-bed heat exchanger for exhaust gases with various temperatures and humidity ratios can be estimated from the results of this study. Mass flow ratio (the ratio of mass flow rate of water to that of gas) and temperature of inlet water are also considered as important operating variables. Increase of heat recovery rate can be obtained through either high mass flow ratio or low temperature of inlet water with resultant low recovered temperature. The heat recovery performance with the mass flow ratio of about up to 10 has been investigated. The effect of number of stages of water fluidized-bed on the heat recovery performance has been also examined in this study.

The cooling characteristic of water-air mixed spray for high water mass flux is not well defined, compared to that of highly pressurized spray. A series of research program was planned to develop the boiling correlation for whole temperature range in case of water-air mixed spray with high water mass flux. The cooling experiments of hot steel surface with initial temperature of 820$^{\circ}C$ were conducted in unsteady state with relatively high water mass flux. A computer program was developed to calculate the heat flux inversely from measured data by three inserted thermocouples. Finally the effects of water and air mass flux on the averaged film boiling heat flux and wetting temperature were studied. In this 1st report, it is found that the boiling curve was similar to that of highly pressurized spray and the decreased slope of heat flux in film boiling region with respect to surface temperature became steep by increasing air mass flux. Also it is shown that, by increasing air mass flux, the averaged heat flux in film boiling region was increased, and then saturated and the wetting temperature was increased, and then decreased. Finally when the heat flux in film boiling region is compared with that of highly pressurized spray, it is known that the cooling is improved by introducing air up to 60%.
Some factors of seawater such as water temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen and asturation of dissolved oxygen were determined in 5 meters intervals from surface to bottom at 11 stations in Yeongil Bay of Korea during late October 1973. Distribution pattern of water masses in Yeongil Bay during the period seemed to be heterogeneous as dividing into two parts of surface and bottom. Water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and saturation of dissolved oxygen of surface water mass showed higher values and salinity of the mass showed lower values than those factors of bottom water mass. Surface water mass might be originated from Tsushima current during summer season and bottom water mass from cold body of East Sea of Korea which seemed to extend to coastal zone during winter season. Land water discharge from Hyeongsan River into the Bay is considered as a minor factor playing slight role in the water mass composition of the area.

A model of simultaneous heat and mass transfer process in absorption of refrigerant vapor into a lithium bromide solution of water-cooled vertical plate absorber was developed. The model can predict temperature and concentration profiles as well as the absorption heat and mass fluxes, the total heat and mass transfer rates and the heat and mass transfer coefficients. Besides, the effect of operating condition on absorption mass flux has been investigated, with the result that the absorption mass flux is increased as the inlet cooling water temperature decreases, the system pressure increases and the inlet solution concentration increases. And among the effects of operating parameters on absorption mass flux, the effect of inlet solution concentration is dominant.
Spatial-temporal variations in physiochemical water qualities (temperature, salinity, DO, SPM, POC and nutrients) of surface and bottom waters were investigated along the mid-western coastal area (Taean Peninsula to Gomso Bay) of Korea. Spatial distribution patterns of temperature and salinity were mostly controlled by the physical mixing process of freshwater from Geum River and/or Gyunggi Bay with nearby coastal water. A strong tidal front is formed off Taean Peninsula during spring and summer. Seasonal variations in nutrient concentrations, lower in spring and summer and higher in fall and winter, are primarily regulated by magnitude of phytoplankton occurrence rather than freshwater loadings into the bay. Based on seasonal and spatial variability of physicochemical parameters, water quality of the study area can be divided into four water masses; Gyunggi Bay-influenced Water Mass (GBWM), Geum River-influenced Water Mass (GRWM), Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water Mass (YSBCWM) and Cheonsu Bay Water Mass (CBWM). Water quality of the GBWM (Taean Peninsula coastal area), which has relatively low salinity and high concentrations of nutrients, is strongly controlled by the Gyunggi Bay coastal water, which is under influence of the Han River freshwater. In this water mass, the mixed layer is always developed by strong tidal mixing. As a result, a tidal front is formed along the offshore boundary of the mixed layer. Such tidal fronts probably play an important role in the distribution of phytoplankton communities, SPM and nutrients. The GRWM, with low salinity and high nutrients, especially during the flood summer season, is closely related to physiochemical properties of the Geum River. During the flood season, nutrient-enriched Geum River water mass extends up to 60 km away from the river mouth, potentially causing serious environmental problems such as eutrophication and unusual and/or noxious algal blooms. Offshore (<$30{\sim}40m$ in water depth) of the study area, YSBCWM coupled with a strong thermocline can be identified in spring-summer periods, exhibiting abundant nutrients in association with low temperature and limited biological activity. During spring and summer, a tidal front is formed in a transition zone between the coastal water mass and bottom cold water mass in the Yellow Sea, resulting in intensified upwelling and thereby supplying abundant nutrients to the GBWM and GRWM. Such cold bottom water mass and tidal front formation seems to play an important role in controlling water quality and further regulating physical ecosystem processes along mid-western Korean coastal area.

The environmental changes related to hypoxic water mass were investigated at Gamak bay in summer times, June, July and August 2006. The hypoxic water mass was found, in first, at the northern area of Gamak bay on 27 June. This water mass has been sustained until the end of August and disappear on 13 September. In Gamak bay, the hypoxic water mass was closely related to geography. During the formation of oxygen deficiency, changes in dissolved nutrients was studied and found that on surface layer and lower layer, DIN were 0.80 ${\mu}M$~19.8 ${\mu}M$(6.03 ${\mu}M$) and 1.13 ${\mu}M$~60.83 ${\mu}M$(10.66 ${\mu}M$), and DIP were 0.01 ${\mu}M$~0.92 ${\mu}M$(0.24 ${\mu}M$), and 0.01 ${\mu}M$~3.57 ${\mu}M$(0.49 ${\mu}M$), respectively, far higher distribution on lower layer of the water where hypoxic water mass was occurred. The configuration of phosphorus was analyzed to figure out the possibility of release of phosphorus from sediments. It was found that the Labile-Phosphorus, which is capable of easy move to water layer by following environmental change was found more than 70%. Therefore, in Gamak bay, it was found that the possibility of large amount of release of soluble P into the water, while hypoxic water mass was occurred in deep layer was higher. It is suggested that DIP in the northern sea of Gamak bay mainly sourced from the soluble P from lower layer of the waters where hypoxic water mass was created more than that from basin. However, existence form of phosphorus in sediments during normal times, not during creation of hypoxic water mass, needs further study.
