This study investigates the dynamic response characteristics of a structure impacted by a high speed projectile. The impact of a 300 kg projectile on a water storage tank is simulated by the general purpose computer codes ANSYS and LS-DYNA. Several methods to simulate the impact are considered and their results are compared. Based upon this, an alternative impact analysis method that is equivalent to an explicit dynamic analysis is proposed. The effect of fluid on the responses of the tank is also addressed.
In rough seas, green water shipped on board may impose quite large impact loads on the structures on deck and sometimes result in structure damages. One of the essential tasks of the naval fluid engineers is to provide the design impact loads which are needed for proper design of the structure strength against the green water impacts. Computation of the design impact load due to green water needs first a process to find the sea condition and the ship cruising condition which cause maximum green water impacts on structures as well as other succeeding processes to compute ship motion responses, green water flows and impact loads. Also, as a bold and practical process, it is needed that the irregular real seas are to be substituted by design regular waves which are equivalent in view points of green water impacts. In this paper, the whole processes to compute the design green water loads acting on bow structure are set up creatively. And the green water design impact loads acting on the box-type structure of a high-speed ship's bow are computed and discussed.
This study was carried out for improving the effectiveness of water resources development project through local resident opinions in the environmental impact assessment(EIA). The EIA reports of seven dams were examined. Four dams -Youngju Dam, Seongduck Dam, Buhang Dam and Hantangang Dam- which included many local opinions including 470 opinions of 341 local residents were selected to be analyzed. Local residents submitted their opinions in the six fields which are meteorological phenomena, water quality, land use, fauna and flora, noise and vibration, and residence, and the major opinions of those opinions came from the atmosphere environment field which is 32% of total opinions and social and economic field which is 38% of total opinions, respectively. In submerged area, opinions of the measure for migration and compensation were 91% and in non-submerged area, opinions of the measure for meteorological phenomena was 86%. Those percentages were maximum in each area. Opinions concerned meteorological phenomena were 86% and 53% in Youngju Dam and Seongduck Dam where area is surrounded by existing dam, but there was only 9% and 0% of opinions in Buhang Dam and Hantangang Dam where area is without existing dam nearby. The reformation methods which reflected the resident's opinions were suggested on EIA in dam development projects. First of all, reliability and objectivity of the field of meteorological phenoma should be enhanced by scientific prediction of the phenomenon days. Secondly, techniques reducing uncertainty of various water quality prediction models ought to be developed and effectiveness of the reduction strategies in environmental impact should be quantified. Finally, the draft of EIA report should involve the detailed plans of migration and compensation's procedures, criteria and measures to support.
Daily solar radiation is essential for water resources planning and environmental impact assessment. However, radiation data is not commonly available in Korea other than in big cities, and there has been no direct measurement for rural areas where water resources planning and environmental impact assessment is usually most needed. In general, missing radiation data is estimated from nearby regional stations within a certain distance, and this study compared two dominant methods (modified Angstrom equation and transmittance interpolation method) at six stations in Nakdong River watershed area. Two methods shows a similar level of accuracy but the transmittance interpolation method is likely to be superior in that there is no need for any measurement element since the modified Angstrom equation require the sunshine hour measurement. This study will contribute to improve water resource and water quality management in Nakdong River watershed.
This paper describes experimental studies of impact pressure generated by breaking regular waves in shallow water on a vertical cylinder. Experimental work was carried out in a shallow water flume using a 1:30 - scale model of a vertical rigid circular hollow cylinder with a diameter 0.2 m. This represents a monopile for shallow water offshore wind turbines, subjected to depth induced breaking regular waves of frequencies of 0.8 Hz. The experimental setup included a 1 in 10 sloping bed followed by horizontal bed with a constant 0.8 m water depth. To determine the breaking characteristics, plunging breaking waves were generated. Free surface elevations were recorded at different locations between the wave paddle to the cylinder. Wave impact pressures on the cylinder at a number of elevations along its height were measured under breaking regular waves. The depth-induced wave breaking characteristics, impact pressures, and wave run-up during impact for various cylinder locations are presented and discussed.
Urbanization increases impervious area and decreases the water quantity infiltrating into soil layers. This leads to lack of ground water, it could be possibly problematic for agricultural water for crop growth in lower basins, reducing not only ground water but also streamflow quantities. One such approach to minimize the impact of urbanization is to apply low impact developments (LIDs). LIDs are to decrease the percentage of impervious area so that infiltration rate is increased, there is a need to simulate the LIDs prior to the construction. LIDs in Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) are limited to be seven types, however it is often required to simulate LIDs more than seven types. Therefore an approach to apply eleven LIDs is provided in the study, updating the model parameters. A scenario containing eleven LIDs was given by the environmental decision makers, the effect of LIDs were simulated with the expected annual costs considering establishment and maintenance costs.
An integration study of time-variable small watershed and stream models (USEPA's SWMM and WASP5) was performed for impact assessment of urbanization on water environment. The study area, the Kyoungan Stream, the tributary of Paldang Lake, was divided into 111 subbasins, based on the topographic condition, land use, and drainage system. RUNOFF block of SWMM was applied to estimate runoff flow and quality. EXTRAN block computed daily and hourly flow according to simulated runoff flow, water supply, and drainage data. SWMM was connected to WASP5 by transforming output file of SWMM into input file of WASP5. The nonpoint source loads and flow data of SWMM were imported to WASP5. The stream was divided into 45 segments based on the watershed delineation. The study included three water quality parameters, BOD, TN, and TP. The validate models were used to examine the impact of urbanization on stream flow and water quality.
