  • A two-phase (gas and liquid) flow analysis solver, named CUPID, has been developed for a realistic simulation of transient two-phase flows in light water nuclear reactor components. In the CUPID solver, a two-fluid three-field model is adopted and the governing equations are solved on unstructured grids for flow analyses in complicated geometries. For the numerical solution scheme, the semi-implicit method of the RELAP5 code, which has been proved to be very stable and accurate for most practical applications of nuclear thermal hydraulics, was used with some modifications for an application to unstructured non-staggered grids. This paper is concerned with the effects of interpolation schemes on the simulation of two-phase flows. In order to stabilize a numerical solution and assure a high numerical accuracy, the second-order upwind scheme is implemented into the CUPID code in the present paper. Some numerical tests have been performed with the implemented scheme and the comparison results between the second-order and first-order upwind schemes are introduced in the present paper. The comparison results among the two interpolation schemes and either the exact solutions or the mesh convergence studies showed the reduced numerical diffusion with the second-order scheme.

  • A sub-channel solver, named ${\underline{S}}teady$ and ${\underline{T}}ransient$ ${\underline{A}}nalyzer$ for ${\underline{R}}eactor$ ${\underline{T}}hermal$ hydraulics (START), has been developed using the homogenous model for two-phase conditions of light water reactors. The code is developed as a fast and accurate TH-solver for coupled and multi-physics calculations. START has been validated against the NUPEC PWR Sub-channel and Bundle Test (PSBT) database. Tests like single-channel quality and void-fraction for steady state, outlet fluid temperature for steady state, rod-bundle quality and void-fraction for both steady state and transient conditions have been analyzed and compared with experimental values. Results reveal a good accuracy of solution for both steady state and transient scenarios. Axially different values for turbulent mixing coefficient are used based on different grid-spacer types. This provides better results as compared to using a single value of turbulent mixing coefficient. Code-to-code evaluation of PSBT results by the START code compares well with other industrial codes. The START code has been parallelized with the OpenMP algorithm and its numerical performance is evaluated with a large whole PWR core. Scaling study of START shows a good parallel performance.

  • In this study the RETRAN-03 code was modified to analyze the thermal-hydraulic transients under three-dimensional ship motions for the application to the future marine reactors. First Japanese nuclear ship MUTSU reactor have been analyzed under various ship motions to verify this code. As results, typical thermal-hydraulic characteristics of marine reactors such as flow rate oscillations and S/G water level oscillations are successfully simulated at various conditions.

  • Pressure monitoring is expected to be expanded in a water distribution system according to accelerated development of smart water network management technologies caused by appearances of affordable digital infrastructures like computing, storage and bandwidth. However, the placement of pressure sensors has been determined by engineer's technical decisions since there is no well-defined criteria for deciding a suitable location of pressure sensor. This study presents a placement method of pressure sensors based on the consideration of allowable error in calibrating water network analysis modeling. The proposed method is to find a minimum set of pressure sensors for achieving a reliable management of water transmissions main and increasing the efficiency of their real-time operation. In the case study in Y area's transmission main, the proposed method shows equally distributed pressure sensors in terms of hydraulics. It is expected that the proposed method can be used to manage transmission mains stably and construct a robust real-time network analysis system as a minimal criteria.

  • Models for water treatment processes include simulation, i.e., modelling of water quality, flow hydraulics, process controls and design. Water treatment processes are inherently dynamic because of the large variations in the influent water flow rate, concentration and composition. Moreover, these variations are to a large extent not possible to control. Mathematical models and computer simulations are essential to describe, predict and control the complicated interactions of the water treatment processes. An accurate description of such systems can therefore result in highly complex models, which may not be very useful from a practical, operational point of view. The main objective is to combine knowledge of the process dynamics with mathematical methods for processes estimation and identification. Good modelling practice is way to obtain this objective and to improve water treatment processes(its understanding, design, control and performance- efficiency). By synthesize of existing knowledge and experience on good modelling practices and principles the aim is to help address the critical strategic gaps and weaknessesin water treatment models application.

  • Multivariate statistical approaches to classify sampling sites with measuring their similarity by water quality data and understand the characteristics of classified clusters have been discussed for the optimal water quality monitering network. For empirical study, data of two years (2005, 2006) at the 9 sampling sites with the combination of 2 depth levels and 7 important variables related to water quality is collected in Yongdam reservoir. The similarity among sampling sites is measured with Euclidean distances of water quality related variables and they are classified by hierarchical clustering method. The clustered sites are discussed with principal component variables in the view of the geographical characteristics of them and reducing the number of measuring sites. Nine sampling sites are clustered as follows; One cluster of 5, 6, and 7 sampling sites shows the characteristic of low water depth and main stream of water. The sites of 2 and 4 are clustered into the same group by characteristics of hydraulics which come from that of main stream. But their changing pattern of water quality looks like different since the site of 2 is near to dam. The sampling sites of 3, 8, and 9 are individually positioned due to the different tributary.

  • KAERI has developed a KALIMER-600 which is a pool-type sodium-cooled fast reactor with a 600MWe electric generation capacity. For a SFR development, one of the main topics is an enhancement of the reactor system safety. Therefore, we have a long-term plan to design the large sodium experimental facility to evaluate the reactor safety and component performance. In order to extrapolate a thermal hydraulic phenomena in a large sodium reactor, the thermal hydraulics phenomena is under investigation in a 1/$10^{th}$ water-simulant facility for the KALIMER-600. In this paper, we shortly described the experimental facility setup and the measurement of the isothermal global flow behavior. For the flow field measurement, the PIV method was used in a transparent Plexiglas reactor vessel model at around $20^{\circ}C$ water condition.

  • Surge overflow may cause damage on earthen levees. Levee strengthened on the levee crest and landward-side slope can provide protection against the erosion damage induced by surge overflow. In this paper, surge overflow of a roller compacted concrete RCC strengthened levee was studied in a purely Lagrangian and meshless approach, the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. After verifying the developed model with analytical solution and comparing the results with full-scale experimental data, the roughness and erosion parameters were calibrated. The water thickness, flow velocity, and erosion depth at crest, landward-side slope and toe were calculated. The characteristics of flow hydraulics and erosion on the RCC strengthened levee are given. The results indicate that the RCC strengthened levee can resist erosion damage for a long period.

  • A good understanding of the interaction between flow, vegetation, and sediment is required for successful river restoration and sustainable flood management. The purpose of this paper is to provide a summary of available methods to determine flow resistance of natural rivers with vegetation, and discuss the influence of vegetation on erosion and sedimentation processes. Recently, significant advances have been made, but the effects of vegetation on flow and sediment dynamics are still not fully understood. Possible solutions to close the gaps in the current knowledge are suggested, with special focus directed to the determination of the interactive width between main channel and vegetated floodplains, the flow resistance of flexible vegetation with and without leaves, and the flow over submerged vegetation with low water depth.
