  • This study selected the promising area of submarine groundwater discharge(SGD) that flows into the sea following unconfined physical aquifer through the electrical resistivity survey of the land and sea. The submarine groundwater discharge(SGD) mostly flows into the sea following fracture zones, and the detection of the fault zone becomes the important guideline of groundwater discharge. Electrical sounding of the land assessed the groundwater flow and integration possibility according to the location of a fault that is a water path between underground reservoir and surface water as well as a rock fracture. In addition, the study conducted sea electrical resistivity to expand the area with high potential and selected the expected water potential groundwater area. The areas of the study were Busan and coastal areas, and for the terrain analysis, the candidates of the ground exploration were selected after analyzing lineaments that is expanded to coast direction.

  • This investigation deals with the spin-up flows in a circular container of aspect ratio, 2.0. Shear front is generated in the transient spin-up process and propagating from the side wall to the central axis in a rotating container. Propagation of the shear front to the axis in a rotating container means the region acquires an angular momentum transfer from the solid walls. Propagating speed of the shear front depends on the apparent viscosity of polymer solution. Two kinds of polymer solutions are considered as a working fluid: one is CMC and the other is CTAB solution. CMC solution has larger apparent viscosity than that of water, and CTAB shows varying apparent viscosities depending on the applied shear rates. Transient and spatial variations of the apparent viscosities of the present polymer solutions (CTAB and CMC) cause different speeds of the propagating shear front. In practice, CMC solution that has larger values of apparent viscosity than that of water always shows rapid approach to the steady state in comparison of the behavior of the flows with water. However, for the CTAB solution, the speed of the propagating of the shear front changes with the local magnitude of its apparent viscosity. Consequently, the prediction of Wedemeyer's model quantitatively agrees with the present experimental results.

  • An optical fiber probe system for measuring the local void fraction in the air-water two-phase flow was developed with a 1550 nm light source. Air was injected through a nozzle placed in the center of the bottom wall of a water-filled cylindrical tank. The optical fiber probe having a diameter of $125{\mu}m$ was sufficiently thin to resolve the air-water interface of the bubbly flows. To verify the performance of the optical fiber probe, the synchronized high speed visualization study using a high speed camera was carried out. Comparison between the optical signals and the instantaneous bubble diffraction images confirms that the optical fiber probe is very accurate to measure the void fraction in two-phase flows. The estimated bubble diameter and the rising velocity by the optical fiber probe have 1% and 5% of accuracy, respectively.

  • The subbasin spatial scale can affect a hydrological simulation result. The objective of this study was to investigate an appropriate subbasin spatial scale for reproducing the different flow phases with the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). Moreover, this study addressed the total hydrologic model uncertainty using the Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) method. The hydrologic modelling uncertainty analysis revealed that the courser subbasin spatial scale provided a relatively better coverage of most of the observations by the 95PPU. On the other hand, the finer subbasin spatial scale produced the best single simulation output closer to the observation. Moreover, most of the observed high flows were enveloped by the 95PPU while this did not happen for the low flows. The overall average performance improvement through an appropriate subbasin spatial scale for reproducing the different flow phases in the Yongdam and Gilgelabay watersheds were found to be 36% and 53%, respectively. It is, therefore, a worth that to put more effort in reproducing the different flow phases by investigating an appropriate subbasin spatial scale to improve our understanding about the frequency and magnitude of the different flow phases.

  • When the object is traveling in the water at tremendously high speeds, the cavity forms and grows up at a fore part of the object called cavitator, and the object is eventually enveloped by vaporized water, supercavitation. As a result, the only part of the object in direct contact with the water is the cavitator, so skin-friction drag is significantly reduced. This is why recently supercavitating objects have been interested in many applicable fields. In this study we are focused out attention on supercavitating flows around various shapes of two and three dimensional cavitators. First, general features of supercavitation are examined by analyzing results obtained by the previously developed numerical method. Second, experimental observations are carried out at a cavitation tunnel at the Chungnam National University (CNU CT), and supercavity dimensions are scrutinized.

  • Current observations were carried out in Jinhae Bay area during the period of January to February 1974. The data were synthetically analyzed and the characteristics of the water movement in Jinhae Bay were studied. The water movement in Jinhae Bay area is a reversing tidal current type and the Semi- diurnal tidal current is predominant. The ebb current begins at about high water time and the strongest current occurs at about 3 hour after high water. The flood current begins at 0.2-1.0 hour before low water and the strongest current occurs at about 3-4 hour after low water. The main ebb current flows to SE direction with the maximum welocity, about 100cm/sec and the lood flows to NW with the maximum velocity, about 70cm/sec. Generally, the ebb current in Jinhae Bay is more predominat than the flood current except at the west and the north coast area of Gadeog-do where the flood current is more predominant.

  • In order to analyze the water supply capacity in an estuary reservoir, a system composed of daily water balance model and daily inflow model was developed. The agricultural water demands to paddy fields, domestic water demands to residential areas, and industrial water demands to industrial complexes were considered in this daily water balance model. Likewise, the outflow volume through sluice gates and inside the water level at the start of the outflow was initially conditioned to simulate estuary reservoir storage. The DAWAST model (Noh, 1991) was selected to simulate daily estuary reservoir inflow, wherein return flows from agricultural, domestic, and industrial water were included to simulate runoff. Using this system, the water supply capacity in the Geum River estuary reservoir was analyzed.

  • This paper presents a numerical investigation of vorticity generation in fully vegetated open-channel flows. The Reynolds stress model is used for the turbulence closure. Open-channel flows with rough bed-smooth sidewalls and smooth bed-rough sidewalls are simulated. The computed vectors show that in channel flows with rough bed and rough sidewalls, the free-surface secondary currents become relatively smaller and larger, respectively, compared with that of plain channel flows. Also, open-channel flows over vegetation are simulated. The computed bottom vortex occupies the entire water depth, while the free-surface vortex is reduced. The contours of turbulent anisotropy and Reynolds stress are presented with different density of vegetation. The budget analysis of vorticity equation is carried out to investigate the generation mechanism of secondary currents. The results of the budget analysis show that in plain open-channel flow, the production by anisotropy is important in the vicinity of the wall and free-surface boundaries, and the production by Reynolds stress is important in the region away from the boundaries. However, this rule is not effective in vegetated channel flows. Also, in plain channel flows, the vorticity is generated mainly in the vicinity of the free-surface and the bottom, while in vegetated channel flows, the regions of the bottom and vegetation height are important to generate the vorticity.

  • The objective of this study is to perform hydraulic and numerical model experiments of the flows in circulation-water-pump(CWP) chambers of combined cycle power plants (CCPP) to be built and to suggest improvement plans if the flows might cause a serious problem on the operation of CWPs. Hydraulic model was constructed in a scale of 1 to 20 using acrylic sheets and a two dimensional numerical model used was RMA2. To evaluate results of Hydraulic and numerical model experiments, evaluation criteria of flow conditions in the intake canal and CWP chambers were determined. Vertical vorticities obtained from numerical simulations for the initial plan of CCPPs were qualitatively compared with results of hydraulic model experiments and the formation possibility of a large scale vortex, one of the flow evaluation criteria, was evaluated. The initial plan was found not to satisfy the flow evaluation. Nine improvement plans were devised and numerically simulated. Four alternative plans among nine improvement plans were selected and hydraulically experimented. On the ground of the results of hydraulic model experiments, a final improvement plan, one of four improvement plants, was suggested. When CWP chambers and intake canals were designed with spatial constraints, flow separating wall and guide walls were found to improve flow conditions in CWP chambers.

  • Casting defects produced during the casting process seriously affect the mechanical properties of the resulting products, reduce the performance capabilities of the product, and also result in economic losses. Therefore, this paper mainly investigates the causes of defects and methods by which to reduce these defects stemming from molten metal flows in a runner system of the type widely used in the sand mold casting process. The flow characteristics of a molten alloy are difficult to observe during the actual casting process. For this reason, a water model was used to observe the flow in the casting process, and the flow in each case was recorded using high-speed cameras as part of the experimental process of this study. Several repetitive experiments were performed to improve the accuracy of the experimental results. The traditional casting system was modified according to the design rules proposed by Campbell, and the system was termed flow-adaptive gating system with a water model. Comparing the flow characteristics of traditional and adaptive gating systems with a water model shows that the bubbles in the water in the latter case are reduced more significantly than in the former case. A ceramic filter system was adapted to the flow-adaptive gating system to minimize the instability of the flow during filling, which occurs as the fluid velocity in the runner increases. In additional, the flow behavior with and without the filter system were compared. The water model system in this work was shown to be able to verify that the adaptation of the filter system brings improvements by stabilizing the flow and reducing the amount of bubbles in the runner system. Moreover, using the flow-adaptive runner system with the filter system leads to considerably stable flows in the runner system.
