  • An empirical study and environmental and ecological analysis were conducted on Otgol Village(a village of the Gyeongju Choi's clan in Daegu) where an enclosed pond and groves are still observed. In particular, the enclosed pond and groves and village water system were investigated from an ecological perspective. The enclosed landscape is described based on feng shui principles and the environmental and ecological significance were examined. In general, the environmental and ecological significance is very broad; however, they were analyzed in terms of the quality of life as an empirical study as follows: First, water quality was measured to investigate the improvement of continuous water system functions. In other words, water quality was measured at East Valley(resting space), West Valley(living space), the enclosed pond where the two valleys merge, and the stream that flows out of the pond. Second, the climate functions of the enclosed groves that border the village were examined. In other words, temperature was measured in two places(200m distance from the center of the groves). Third, whether or not a sound ecosystem can be sustained was investigated. In other words, landscape ecological indicators were chosen and measured. The results are as follows: First, the enclosed pond played the role of purifying water quality. While the East Valley has been popular with men for its rock walls and torrents, the West Valley has been popular with women as a living space(ex: doing the laundry). Therefore, the difference of water quality can be explained. Second, since enclosed groves are in a small village forest, they are very weak in terms of being wind proof and temperature reduction effects. Instead, they play the role of the village boundary. Third, the groves are ecologically sound considering the landscape ecological indicators and are similar to ordinary traditional rural villages. In terms of the connection of the green zone, the village groves are well connected to the village boundary wood. If the village groves are restored, in particular, they would offer a decent habitat for grove creatures. According to this study, the traditional village space was formed upon the influence of Feng Shui theories that are based on environmental and ecological principles that focus on the harmony between humans and nature. From the environmental and ecological perspective, the enclosed pond and groves are important factors in building a sustainable village. The diverse water space would help to improve water quality and increase water volume by promoting the water circulation system. In addition, the village woods would surround the village and decrease the temperature and humidity difference between winter and summer. If the groves are small and badly damaged, however, they are meaningful only in dividing the region. The overall improvement of a forestation system and botanical composition may increase the biological diversity and promote the migration of species. Otgol Village has developed an enclosed landscape to improve the village environment. In other words, a sound and refreshing living environment can be developed when the natural ecological system is well understood and properly preserved. Additionally, this traditional village planning will be the environmental and ecological method. From the perspective of environmental ecology, therefore, a traditional village is recommended.

  • In this study, WUA (Weighted Usable Area) based on the Instream Flow Incremental Methodology (IFIM) was calculated to determine ecological flow at JeonJu-Cheon by using River2D model. To calibrate River2D, simulation results for low flow conditions of River2D were compared with calibrated HEC-RAS simulation results and the optimum parameters were determined. The results were RMSE (0.18), NSE (0.71) and coefficient of determination (0.78) for velocity and RMSE (0.02), NSE (0.71), coefficient of determination (0.73) for water depth. The result shows that the model successfully simulates the water flows. A selected target fish species to build the habitat suitability index were composed of Zaccoplatypus and Coreoleuciscus splendidus. These species showed the highest occurrences over the past decade in f ish monitoring. Also, The WUA-Discharge curve was calculated with the suitability index in a medium flow conditions. From the result, WUA is changed according to flowrate. In the flowrate-WUA/A graph, ecological flow can be determined at $1.8{\sim}2.0m^3/s$ for Zaccoplatypus $2.0m^3/s$ and Coreoleuciscus splendidus $1.8m^3/s$ at JeonJu-Cheon upstream. When compared with flow-duration analysis, it is demonstrative that simulation results fitted ecological flow considering quantity of available habitat for each fish species.

  • During the day time in summer, peak of air conditing load, and electric power management system lies under overloaded condition. The reason is the enlarged peak load value of electric power caused by increased air-cooling load in summer. To prevent load concentration during day time and overloaded condition of power management system, some energy storage methods are suggested. One of these methods is ice storage system. Water has some good properties as P.C.M.(Phase Chang Material) : Its melting point is the range of required operation temperature. It has large specific latent heat and is chemically stable compared to other organic or inorganic substances. It is cheap and easy to treat. This study represents experimental results of heat transfer characteristics of P.C.M. under the outward melting process in a vertical cylinder. We experimented with twelve combinations of conditions, i.e., three different inlet temperatures($7^{\circ}C,\;4^{\circ}C\;and\;1^{\circ}C$), two working fluid directions(upward and downward), and two aspect ratios, H/R(4 and 2). At the inlet temperature of $7^{\circ}C$ and $4^{\circ}C$, there was temperature stagnation region where the temperature of P.C.M. remains constant at $4^{\circ}C$ regardless of aspect ratio and direction of working fluid. This temperature stagnation occurs as the water, at its maximum density, flows down to the lower region. The phase change interface formed bell-shaped curve as the melting process continued. With a new set of conditions(4H/R, inlet temperature $4^{\circ}C$ and $1^{\circ}C$, downward/upwerd inlet direction), the movement of phase change interface was faster when the working flued inlet direction was downward. With the same set of conditions, melting rate and total melting energy were larger when the working fluid inlet direction was downward. The results were reversed when the other sets of conditions were applied.

  • 97% of water on earth exists in the form of seawater. Therefore, the use of marine resources is one of the most important research issues at present. The use of seawater is expanding in various fields (seawater desalination, cooling water for nuclear power plants, deep seawater utilization, etc.). Seawater intake systems utilizing sand filters in order to take in clean seawater are being actively employed. For the intake pipe used in this system, assuring equal intake flows through the respective holes is very important to improve the efficiency of the intake and filtering process. In this study, we analyzed the efficiency of the dual structure perforated pipe used in the seawater intake system using 3D numerical simulations and the inflow rate according to the gap of the up holes. In the case of decreasing gaps in the up holes toward the pipe end, the variation of the total inflow rate was small in comparison with the other cases. However, the standard deviation of the inflow rate through the up holes was the lowest in this case. Also, stable flow occurred, which can improve the efficiency of the intake process. In the future, a sensitivity analysis of the various conditions should be performed based on the results of this study, in order to determine the factors influencing the efficiency, which can then be utilized to derive optimal designs suitable for specific environments.

  • The most common approach for computing engineering flow problems at high Reynolds number is still the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) computations based on turbulence models with wall functions. The recently developed generalized wall functions blending between the wall-limiting viscous and the outer logarithmic relations ensure a smooth transition of flow quantities across two regions. The performances and convergence properties of widely used turbulence models with wall functions that are applicable for turbulence kinetic energy (TKE), turbulent and specific dissipation rates, and eddy viscosity are presented through a series of near wall flow simulations. The present results show that RNG k-𝜖 model should be carefully applied with small tolerance to get the stable solution when the first grid lies in the buffer layer. The standard k-𝜖 and RNG k-𝜖 models are not sensitive to the selection of wall functions for both TKE and eddy viscosity, while the k-ω SST model should be applied together with kL-wall function for TKE and nutUB-wall functions for eddy viscosity to ensure accurate and stable boundary conditions. The applications to a backward-facing step flow at Re=155,000 reveal that the reattachment length is reasonably well predicted on appropriately refined mesh by all turbulence models, except the standard k-𝜖 model which about 13% underestimates the reattachment length regardless of the grid refinement.

  • Grout is generally operated with low viscous material similar to water, but grout for micro crack with high viscous materials and high injection pressure is gradually increased under the development of underground and subsea space. In order to estimate grouting injection performance considering crack width, viscosity of grouting materials, and injection pressure, there should be a reliable standard laboratory testing method. In this paper, theoretical injection mechanisms of grouting materials are presented as radial and linear flows, and laboratory testing apparatus are introduced to simulate each flow case. Radial flow is simulated by using acrylic disk plates which are able to spread grouting material radially from the center of the disk plates, and linear flow is simulated by using stainless parallel plane plates which are able to spread grouting material linearly. Apparatus are consist of upper and lower plates and industrial films with different thickness are placed between plates in order to simulate various crack widths. Laboratory verification tests with these apparatus were conducted with tap water (1cP at $20^{\circ}C$) as an injection material. Through the laboratory testing results, the best laboratory testing method is recommended in order to estimate grouting injection performance.

  • This study suggests a new time distribution method of rainfall for small urban watersheds. IETD (Interevent Time definition) determination method considering basin characteristics and dimensionless accumulation rainfall curves involving rainfall events with shorter duration than 3-hours are suggested. A new definition of IETD is the time period from the end of a rainfall event to the end of a direct runoff. Using the method, we drive an area-IETD regression curve for the Joong-Rang basin. The rainfall event with 10 year-return periods, 2-hour duration is distributed and applied four urban watersheds. In the four watersheds, we calculate hydrographs for four watersheds using SWMM and compare them with ones of the Huff's distribution model. From the comparison, we find that peak flows resulted from the developed methodology are $11\sim15%$ larger than ones from the Huff's model. As conclusion, the Huff method should be adopted for the urban watersheds with careful verification.

  • Rainfall falling in the impervious area of the cities flows over the surface and into the stormwater pipe networks to be discharged from the catchment. Therefore, it is very important to determine the size of stormwater pipes based on the peak discharge to mitigate urban flood. Climate change causes the severe rainfall in the small area, then the peak rainfall can not be discharged due to the capacity of the stormwater pipes and causes the urban flood for the short time periods. To mitigate these type of flood, the large stormwater pipes have to be constructed. However, the economic factor is also very important to design the stormwater pipe networks. In this study, 4 urban catchments were selected from the frequently flooded cities. Rainfall data from Seoul and Busan weather stations were applied to calculate runoff from the catchments using SWMM model. The characteristics of the peak runoff were analyzed using linear regression model and the 95% confidence interval and the coefficient of variation was calculated. The drainage density was calculated and the runoff characteristics were analyzed. As a result, the drainage density were depended on the structure of stormwater pipe network whether the structures are dendritic or looped. As the drainage density become higher, the runoff could be predicted more accurately. it is because the possibility of flooding caused by the capacity of stormwater pipes is decreased when the drainage density is high. It would be very efficient if the structure of stormwater pipe network is considered when the network is designed.

  • Fluid conductivity logging has been applied in the boreholes to identify the permeable fi:actures and estimate the origin of saline groundwater in coast area. Fluid replacement technique measures the fluid electrical conductivity with depth at different times in a well after the borehole is first washed out with different water by passing a tube to the borehole bottom. Then formation water flows into the borehole through aquifer such as permeable fractures or porous formation during ambient or pumping condition. Measured conductivity profiles with times therefore indicate the locations of permeable zone or fractures within the open hole or the fully slotted casing hole. As a result of fluid conductivity logging for three boreholes in the study area, it is interpreted that saline groundwater is caused by seawater intrusion through fractured rock, although the effect by land reclamation partially remains. We are planning the quantitative analysis to estimate the hydraulic characteristics using fluid replacement technique, and this approach might be usefully utilized for assessing the characteristics of seawater intrusion, the design of optimal pumping, and estimating the hydraulic properties in coastal aquifer.

  • In this study, a 2D finite-element analysis, using the SEEP/W program, was carried out to estimate the amount of groundwater flawing into a tunnel, as well as the groundwater tables around wetland areas during and after a tunnel excavation through rock mass. Four sites along the Wonhyo-tunnel in Cheonseong Mountain (Gyeongnam, Korea) were analysed, where the model damain of the tunnel included both wetland and fault zone. The anisotropy of the hydraulic conductivities of the rock mass was calculated using the DFN model, and then used as an input parameter for the cantinuum model. Parametric study on the influencing factors was perofrmed to minimize uncertainties in the hydraulic properties. Moreover, the volumetric water content and hydraulic conductivity functions were applied ta the model to reflect the ability of a medium ta store and transport water under both saturated and unsaturated conditions. The conductivity of fault zone was assumed ta be $10^{-5}m/sec\;or\;10^{-6}m/sec$ and the conductivity of grouting zone was assumed as 1/10, 1/50 or 1/100 of the conductivity of rock mass. Totally $6{\sim}8$ cases of transient flow simulation were peformed at each site. The hydraulic conductivities of fault zone showed a significant influence on groundwater inflow when the fault zone crossed the tunnel. Also, groundwater table around wetland maintained in case that the hydraulic conductivity of grouting zone was reduced ta be less than 1/50 of the hydraulic conductivity of rock mass.
