  • Livestock wastewater is being discharged without treatment from Hasen's pig farm cluster in WangGoong (WG) area into the Iksan Stream, eventually flowing into the ManGyung (MG) at the upstream junction. Although it is well known that before discharge, wastewater must satisfy the pig slurry discharge standards; because of ongoing remodeling, proper treatment is not being performed. According to public records, wastewater from the WG pig farm cluster is responsible for 3.6% of MG River pollution and 2.0% of the SaeManGuem (SMG) Reservoir pollution. As a result, upstream water treatment quality has become primary concern for development of the SMG project. All physicochemical constituents and pathogenic microbes, such as chemical oxygen demand ($COD_{Cr}$), biochemical oxygen demand ($BOD_5$), total suspended solids (TSS), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorous (TP), fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli and Salmonella at the effluent of WG Plant (S-1) exceed the effluent standards. This is mainly due to insufficient wastewater treatment: the WG Plant is under renovation to increase water purification efficiency. By comparing the water quality at the S-7 junction, where the the Iksan Stream (pig farms) and the Wanggoong Stream (no pig farms) merge, it is clear that farming facilities and improper treatment can critically affect surrounding water quality. While it is clear throughout this study that the level of all physicochemical parameters and pathogenic microbes along the Stream decreased due to sedimentation, biodegradation and/or dilution. An alarming problem was discovered: the existence of pathogenic microbe count(E coli, Salmonella) in the lagoon wastewater and the stream water. Not only were high concentrations of these pathogens themselves found, but the potential existence of more serious pathogens could rise to more dangerous conditions.

  • With an increasing livestock population, animal manure production has been steadily increasing in Korea. This trend has forced farmers to spend more money for animal manure treatment in their farm. Therefore, research utilizing animal manure as a renewable resources has become increasingly important. The purpose of this study was to develop a stable advanced wastewater treatment system can be applied to conventional animal wastewater treatment processes and evaluate its contribution to reduce effluent discharge volume by recycling as flushing water. AOP (advanced oxidation process) process improved wastewater treatment efficiency in terms of color, suspended solids (SS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Due to the addition of Hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$), pathogens, Salmonella and E. coli, reduction was accomplished. To enhance ozone treatment effect, three levels of ozone test on secondary effluent of pig slurry purification system were conducted. At the level of 5 g/hr, 6.7 g/hr and 8.4 g/hr color of secondary effluent of pig slurry purification system were decreased from 2,433 to 2,199, 2,433 to 1,980 and 2,433 to 243, respectively.

  • This study was performed to investigate the physical characteristics like compressive strength, permeability, porosity and the water quality removal characteristics of permeable concrete pavement filled with microbial-soil sheet to remove SS, organic matter and nutrients in artificial rainfall. As a result, it can show the removal efficiency is SS 90~95%, COD 85~93%, BOD 80~83%, T-N 61~75%, T-P 71~78% on WAPS I(W1) and WAPS II(W2). Therefore, permeable concrete pavement filled with microbial-soil sheet shows higher removal efficiency(SS 10%, organic matter and nutrients 30%) than a conventional porous concrete(W3). By filling microbial-soil sheet to permeable concrete pavement, we confirm that the function and efficiency are improved significantly and that a naturally-friendly facility can be developed and applied to treat non-point sources.

  • In this study a trickling filter system was developed by using polypropylene media and polypropylene nylon media that has recently been developed. The experiment analyzed an ability of water purification of the two plastic media and the effects of biomass on the final effluent. As recycling ratio increases, polypropylene nylon suspender showed higher efficiency by 20%; and, when media height was lengthened twice, efficiency increased about 10%. EPS and biomass increased in proportion to the increase of recycling ratio, and bound-TOC showed a similar trend with bound-EPS (extra-cellular polymeric substances) concentration.

  • Constant rate permeat experiments using polyethylene hollow fiber membranes were conducted in order to treat dam water for potable purposes. The experiments consisted of two series. One series consisted of six bench scale apparatuses, each having a $0.4m^2$ nominal permeat area, which were applied in determining the optimum operating conditions. The other series was comprised of two pilot scale plant, each having a $40m^2$ nominal permeat area. Both series were operated for six months. Coagulant was not used in any of the experiments. To suppress an increase in differential pressure between the inlet and outlet of the membrane, a hydrophilic membrane was found to be better than a hydrophobic membrane. Also, permeat flux should not be more than 0.03m/h, and air bubbling-washing for 1 minute should be conducted at 180 minutes intervals or less.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the purification efficiency of the septic tank method which has been applied by the most of Korean livestock farms, in terms of anaerobic and aerobic treatment. Except several days in summer, BOD of effluent shows 1,500 -3,000 ppm by anaerobic process. In most cases , it exceeds according to the seasons show an increase by decrease of temperature. The removal effect on T-N is hardly found. The suspended solids contents of effluent are reduced to the level of 50-90%. Although BOD contents of effluent are kept high in the beginning, the removal rate of BOD shows 80 percent in the latter half by the aerobic treatment . The removal efficiency of total nitrogen does not appear through the experimental period, but the contents of T-N are not increased in the aerobic process unlike in the anaerobic process. The total phosphorous contents in effluent keep a constant level of 14 mg/L in average. The removal rate of phosphorous shows 91 percent i the last stage.

  • The purpose of this study is to reprocess Waste-LCD(Liquid Crystal Display), to widely increase specific surface-area by foaming agent in the process of reprocessing and to use as a substrate of water treatment which is increased the ability of biological treatment, as well as to control non-point source pollutants produced by surface run off during rainfall with using this substrate, and to improve water quality of public watershed as developing substrate for water treatment to be able to purify second treated water which is exhausted at the wastewater treatment plant. The average removal efficiency of Waste-LCD that using the foaming technology was SS 71.2%, BOD 55.7%, COD 58.4%, T-N 29.5% and T-P was 50.3%. Almost Media, early stage showed low removal efficiency of SS and BOD. However, it became high when the microorganism adhered the Media. The variation of SS removal efficiency was high by inflow concentration of SS. The reason for the Media 4 showed high SS removal efficiency is that it has wide specific surface-area, and also it has a pore. All in all, it shows floating matter treatment ability not only inside but it also works outside of the substrate.

  • Interest in application of ultraviolet light technology for primary disinfection that used for the treatment of water for consumption and wastewater has increased significantly in recent years. Analysis of these systems has been carried out using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) procedure. It offers advantages over other techniques in specific circumstances. CFD has emerged as a powerful tool to aid design of a UV reactor by providing the UV dose delivered by the proposed reactor design and allowing engineers to evaluate alternative designs in much less time and at a reasonable cost. In this study, five different configurations of the apparatus depending on the location of the exit are evaluated in terms of maximum dose, minimum dose, flow patterns, particle tracks and transient dose. The configuration 3 results have higher minimum UV dose value and uniform particle distribution of the UV dose on the outlet than other's.

  • Biosurfactants have versatile properties and potential industrial applications. A new producer, B. subtilis TU2, was isolated from the underground oil-extraction wastewater of Shengli Oilfield, China. Preliminary flask culture showed that the titer of biosurfactant obtained from the broth of TU2 was ~1.5 g/l at 48 h (718 mg/l after purification), with a reduced surface tension of 32.5 mN/m. The critical micelle concentration was measured as 50 mg/l and the surface tension maintained stability in solution with 50 g/l NaCl and 16 g/l $CaCl_2$ after 5 days of incubation at $70^{\circ}C$. FT-IR spectra exhibited the structure information of both glycolipid and lipopeptide. MALDI-TOF-MS analyses confirmed that the biosurfactant produced by B. subtilis TU2 was a blend of glycolipid and lipopeptide, including rhamnolipid, surfactin, and fengycin. The blended biosurfactant showed 86% of oil-washing efficiency and fine emulsification activity on crude oil, suggesting its potential application in enhanced oil recovery.
