  • In this study, plastic detection technique was developed, applying remote sensing technology as a method to extract plastic wastes, which is one of the big causes of concern contributing to environmental destruction. It is possible to extract areas where plastic (including polypropylene and polyethylene) wastes are prominent, using ASTER data by taking advantage of its absorptive characteristics of ASTER/SWIR bands. The algorithm is applicable to define large industrial wastes disposal sites and areas where plastic greenhouses are concentrated. However, the detection technique with ASTER/SWIR data has some research tasks to be tackled, which includes a partial secretion of reference spectral, depending on some conditions of plastic wastes and a detection error in a region mixed with vegetations and waters. Following results were obtained after making comparisons between several detection methods and plastic wastes in different conditions; (a)'spectral extraction method' was suitable for areas where plastic wastes exist separated from other objects, such as coastal areas where plastic wastes drifted ashore. (single plastic spectral was used as a reference for the 'spectral extraction method') (b)On the other hand, the 'spectral extraction method' was not suitable for sites where plastic wastes are mixed with vegetation and soil. After making comparison of the processing results of a mixed area, it was found that applying both 'separation method' using un-mixing and ‘spectral extraction method’ with NDVI masked is the most appropriate method to extract plastic wastes. Also, we have investigated the possibility of reducing the influence of vegetation and water, using ASTER/TIR, and successfully extracted some places with plastics. As a conclusion, we have summarized the relationship between detection techniques and conditions of plastic wastes and propose the practical application of remote sensing technology to the extraction of plastic wastes.

  • This paper aims to examin the channel of waste collection, as well as to clarify the relationship between collection types and regional characteristics. According to the analysis results, a kind of used paper and old metal are mainly collected in regions which have a large population size, high population increasing rates, high population composition rates of secondary industry and high degree of self-supporting in public finance. On the other hand, in regions which have a small population size, low population increasing rates or a decrease in population, and high population composition rates of primary industry and rates of agricultural household, there are high collection rates for others recyclable wastes, a kind of scrap iron, used paper, and used bottle. These results show that the collection types of recyclable domestic wastes are different depend on industry developed degree in region.

  • The amount of the high level radioactive wastes in Korea will be increased up to 14,297 MTU about 2010 year. Most of countries adopt the concept of deep burial repository in high level radioactive waste disposal. Because the high level radioactive wastes are very toxic in biosphere and to human, the data verifing its never return to the biosphere are requisite for the disposal. Presently, the evaluating techniques for the high level radioactive waste disposal are not fully developed. Therefore, in order to dispose the high level radioactive wastes in proper time the R & D of it is urged in our country. The R & D and/or the international joint research programme for the disposal of high level wastes have already been proceeded. In our country no plan for its disposal has been prepared. It is the time that the direction of the R & D is to be discused seriously. The R & D for the disposal of high level radioactive wastes in Korea is believed to be focused on developing the pecular techniques such as in situ characteristics of groundwater flowage, and change of properties of in situ rock mass at thermal effects.

  • As part of a fundamental study on the volume reduction of contaminated concrete wastes, the separation characteristics of the aggregates and the distribution of the radioactivity in the aggregates were investigated. Radioisotope $^{60}Co$ was artificially used as a model contaminant for non-radioactive crushed concrete waste. Volume reduction for radioactively contaminated dismantled concrete wastes was carried out using activated heavy weight concrete taken from the Korea Research Reactor 2 (KRR-2) and light weight concrete from the Uranium Conversion Plant (UCP). The results showed that most of the $^{60}Co$ nuclide was easily separated from the contaminated dismantled concrete waste and was concentrated mainly in the porous fine cement paste. The heating temperature was found to be one of the effective parameters in the removal of the radionuclide from concrete waste. The volume reduction rate achieved was above 80% for the KRR-2 concrete wastes and above 75% for the UCP concrete wastes by thermal and mechanical treatment.

  • This study was performed to evaluate characteristics of illegally dumped wastes in the riversides of Nakdong river found during dredging of Nakdong river. Precise classification of the wastes found in the riversides is essential to proper treatment of the wastes. We tried to determine whether these wastes contained toxic compounds and stabilized. Wastes were found at 27 sampling points out of 159 segments investigated and these wastes were not classified as toxic wastes. In addition, clay soils were found at 60 sampling points, and these soils were not classified as wastes. Thus, these soils are thought to be recycled as construction materials. Some samples were not stabilized, which means biodegradation was still progressed in these areas.

  • Disposal nonconformity of radioactive wastes refers to radioactive wastes that need to be treated, solidified and packaged during operation or decommissioning of NPPs, and are typically exemplified by particulate radioactive wastes with dispersion characteristics. These wastes include the dried powders of concentrated wastes generated in the process of operating NPPs, slurry and sludge, various powdered wastes generated in the decommissioning process (crushed concrete, decontamination sludge, etc.), and fine radioactive soil, which is not easy to decontaminate. As these particulate wastes must be packaged so that they become non-dispersive, they are solidified with solidification agents such as cement and polymer. If they are treated using existing solidification methods, however, the volume of the final wastes will increase. This drawback may increase the disposal cost and reduce the acceptability of disposal sites. Accordingly, to solve these problems, this study investigates the pelletization of particulate radioactive wastes in order to reduce final waste volume.

  • The physical and chemical characteristics of solid organic wastes from paper and pulp industries, tanneries, and food processing industries were studied with regard to fertilizer value as well as humus sources as a rational method of waste utilization. The pulp and paper mill wastes containing low mineral nutrients but high lignin may be utilized for soil amendments through humus preparation. Chemical treatment sludges of tannery wast water contained appreciable fertilizer nutrients andiliming materials, but utilization as fertilizers or soil amendments depends on the pollution effect of high chromium content, which has not been well understood. Food processing wastes may be utilized as organic fertilizers or micronutrient sources for plant. Some wastes containing high water-soluble sugars or lower C/N ratio than 20 may be utilized as additives for rapid humus preparation.

  • It is now common to find the wastes buried in the past during the excavation process of soil for large scale housing and land development. Without proper treatment of the wastes environmentally, the excavation process is no longer able to proceed, and an action plan should be provided to treat the wastes with environmental and economic viability. In the study, the relationship between the apparent density of the wastes and the volume conversion factor, which is the basis in the estimation of waste treatment cost was investigated. From 10 sampling points of a landfill site, wastes were sampled, analyzed for physical characteristics, and the apparent density of mixed and sorted waste was assessed. Applying the empirical formula, and the formula we suggested here, the volume conversion factors were compared with that measured directly in the field using dump truck and excavator. Obviously there was a close relationship among the volume conversion factors resulting from the empirical formula, the formula we suggested and that measured in the field.

  • This study was on the characteristics and heating values analysis of municipal solid wastes according to the volume- rate garbage collection system in Busan. Each waste sample was analyzed to obtain physical composition, proximate analysis, heating value, chemical composition. And the heating value were compared with those of the past waste collection system. The average physical composition of A.P.T. area was food waste 54.0~65.7% , while that of common residence was food waste 57.9~61.2% . The density of solid waste were largely different for site and the highest densities of waste was $399.6kg/m^{3}$ from Market. The low heating value of waste from residence site was 996.9kca1/kg~1, 238.1 kcal/kg which was lower than 1, 000kcal/kg~1, 800kca1/kg of the past wastes. These difference was mainly due to the difference of moisture content and the amount of vegetables.
