The fundamental characteristics of groundwater colloids, such as composition, concentration, size, and stability, were analyzed using granitic groundwater samples taken from the KAERI Underground Research Tunnel (KURT) site by such analytical methods as inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, field emission-transmission electron microscopy, a liquid chromatography-organic carbon detector, and dynamic light scattering technique. The results show that the KURT groundwater colloids are mainly composed of clay minerals, calcite, metal (Fe) oxide, and organic matter. The size and concentration of the groundwater colloids were 10-250 nm and 33-64 ㎍·L-1, respectively. These values are similar to those from other studies performed in granitic groundwater. The groundwater colloids were found to be moderately stable under the groundwater conditions of the KURT site. Consequently, the groundwater colloids in the fractured granite system of the KURT site can form stable radiocolloids and increase the mobility of radionuclides if they associate with radionuclides released from a radioactive waste repository. The results provide basic data for evaluating the effects of groundwater colloids on radionuclide migration in fractured granite rock, which is necessary for the safety assessment of a high-level radioactive waste repository.

There is several ways of recycling methods for waste FRP boats. The main one is mechanical recycling that is one of the simple and technically proven methods. It recently has been reported that FRP can be recycled by separating into laminated glass fiber layers instead of crushing into powder. Even though the mechanical recycling is a good way for the eligibility of laminated glass fiber reinforced material, the system should have another option which can collect resin of FRP. Because the resin is still very useful renewable energy source, that cannot be discarded, But FRP is made up of laminated glass fiber(roving cloth layer) which is fire retardant substances and very hard to break into each layer. Due to the high cost of fossil energy the waste plastics should be regenerated to the source of renewable energy. Laminated glass fiber which is recyclable in a very limited way, is currently a serious barrier to waste FRP boat regenerating. This study is to propose a new extracting method which is efficient and environment friendly FRP waste regenerating system. The recycled glass fiber which is obtained by the separation of the roving layer from FRP waste has been found to be useful for concrete(FRC) products or concrete(FRC) structures as fiber reinforced material. And it can be successively applied to renewable energy applications using the waste resins of FRP residue without laminated glass fiber.

In the process of site selection for a radioactive waste disposal, site characterization must be carried out to obtain input parameters to assess the safety and feasibility of deep geological repository. In this paper, methodologies of site characterization for radioactive waste disposal in Korea were suggested based on foreign cases of site characterization. The IAEA recommends that site characterization for radioactive waste disposal should be performed through stepwise processes, in which the site characterization period is divided into preliminary and detailed stages, in sequence. This methodology was followed by several foreign countries for their geological disposal programs. General properties related to geological environments were obtained at the preliminary site characterization stage; more detailed site characteristics were investigated during the detailed site characterization stage. The results of investigation of geology, hydro-geology, geochemistry, rock mechanics, solute transport and thermal properties at a site have to be combined and constructed in the form of a site descriptive model. Based on this site descriptive model, the site characteristics can be evaluated to assess suitability of site for radioactive waste disposal. According to foreign site characterization cases, 7 or 8 years are expected to be needed for site characterization; however, the time required may increase if the no proper national strategy is provided.
The physicochemical, mineralogical, hydraulic, swelling and mechanical properties of a domestic bentonite for use as the buffer material in a high-level waste repository have been measured. The bentonite is identified to be a Ca-bentonite, and the hydraulic conductivity of the compacted bentonite with the dry density higher than 1.4 Mg/㎥ is lower than 10$^{-11}$ m/s When the dry densities are 1.4 to 1.8 Mg/㎥, the swelling pressures are in the range of 6.6 to 143.5 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The unconfined compressive strength is about 94 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, and the coefficient of volume change and the coefficient of consolidation are in the range of 0.O0249 to 0.02142 $m^2$/MN and 0.018 to 0.115$m^2$/year, respectively.

In this study, conventional head-end processes of spent TRISO fuel have been reviewed to develope more effective treatment methods. The main concerns in the TRISO treatment are to effectively separate the carbon and SiC contained in the TRISO particles. The crush-burn scheme which was considered in the early stages of the development has been replaced by the crush-leach process because of $^{14}C$ problems as a second waste being generated during the process. However, there are still many obstacles to overcome in the reported processes. Hence, innovative thermomechanical concepts and a molten salt electrochemical approach to breach the coating layers of the TRISO particle with a minimized amount of second waste are proposed in this paper and their principles are described in detail.
This study examined apartment residents' energy-lifestyle, and their energy consumption patterns by energy-lifestyle. The major findings are as follow: 1)In order to identify energy lifestyle, three dimensions - value of life, energy consuming behavior and energy awareness - were defined by literature reviews, and each dimension was tested to define components. 2)The scores of the 14 factors that were defined by factor analysis on the three dimensions of the energy lifestyle were subject to cluster analysis, and then lifestyle was categorized into five groups. G1 is very negative, and indifferent to energy waste or saving at home. G2 is passively carrying out energy saving activities at home, only within their comfort. G3 is aware of energy saving, and more actively keeping energy saving behavior in their everyday lives, while they also show energy waste behavior at the same time. G4 is particularly indifferent to energy costs, and presenting energy squandering behaviors. G5 is better aware of energy saving than other groups, and carrying out energy saving behaviors in their everyday lives. This study would be of help to establish energy saving management and education plans in apartments.

In this study, electrokinetic remediation equipment was used to remove cesium (Cs) from clay soil and waste solution was treated with sorption process. The influence of electrokinetic process on the removal of Cs was evaluated under the condition of applied electric voltage of 15.0-20.0 V. In addition to monitoring the Cs removal, electrical current and temperature of the electrolyte during experiment were investigated. The removal efficiency of Cs from soil by electrokinetic method was more than 90%. After electrokinetic remediation, Cs was selectively separated from soil waste solution using sorbents. Various adsorption agents such as potassium nickel hexacyanoferrate (KNiHCF), Prussian blue, sodium tetraphenylborate (NaTPB), and zeolite were compared and KNiHCF showed the highest Cs removal efficiency. The Cs adsorption on KNiHCF reached equilibrium in 30 min. The maximum adsorption capacity was 120.4 mg/g at 0.1 g/L of adsorbent dosage. These results demonstrated that our proposed process combined electrokinetic remediation of soil and waste solution treatment with metal ferrocyanide can be a promising technique to decontaminate Cs-contaminated fine soil.

The overestimation and underestimation of the radioactivity concentration of difficult-to-measure radionuclides can occur during the implementation of the scaling factor (SF) method because of the uncertainties associated with sampling, radiochemical analysis, and application of SFs. Strict regulations ensure that the SF method as an indirect method does not underestimate the radioactivity of nuclear wastes; however, there are no clear regulatory guidelines regarding the overestimation. This has been leading to the misuse of the SF methodology by stakeholders such as waste disposal licensees and regulatory bodies. Previous studies have reported instances of overestimation in statistical implementation of the SF methodology. The analysis of the two most popular linear models of the SF methodology showed that severe overestimation may occur and radioactivity concentration data must be dealt with care. Since one major source of overestimation is the use of minimum detectable activity (MDA) values as true activity values, a comparative study of instrumental techniques that could reduce the MDAs was also conducted. Thermal ionization mass spectrometry was recommended as a suitable candidate for the trace level analysis of long-lived beta-emitters such as iodine-129. Additionally, the current status of the United States and Korea was reviewed from the perspective of overestimation.

Recently, the development of a heat pump technology to recover process waste heat and to generate steam of $120^{\circ}C$ or higher required for industrial processes, has attracted attention. The research of conventional heat pump utilizing the available energy is used primarily for air conditioning, and the production temperature is about $60^{\circ}C$, so it is difficult to utilize it for industrial use. Therefore, in this study, we developed a steam heat pump (SGHP) which recovers the waste heat of process and generates steam at $120^{\circ}C$. The low-pressure refrigerant R245fa, considered to be an eco-friendly refrigerant, has been selected as the refrigerant for SGHP in this study since its Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) is zero and the Global Warming Potential (GWP) is relatively low. A flash tank functioning as a phase separator was installed in the rear stage of the condenser, and the saturated water of high temperature was decompressed to generate steam. It was started at the initial temperature of $70^{\circ}C$, and it was confirmed that $120^{\circ}C$ steam was produced after the system stabilized. We have conducted experiments by modifying the system, and ultimately achieved a heating capacity of 101.4 kW and a COP of 3.05.

A quality assurance safety assessment database, called QUARK (QUality Assurance Program for Radioactive Waste Management in Korea), has been developed to manage both analysis information and parameter database for safety assessment of low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste (LILW) disposal facility in Korea. QUARK is such a tool that serves QA purposes for managing safety assessment information properly and securely. In QUARK, the information is organized and linked to maximize the integrity of information and traceability. QUARK provides guidance to conduct safety assessment analysis, from scenario generation to result analysis, and provides a window to inspect and trace previous safety assessment analysis and parameter values. QUARK also provides default database for safety assessment staff who construct input data files using SAGE(Safety Assessment Groundwater Evaluation), a safety assessment computer code.
