A Study on Physical and Chemical Properties of Vegetation Foundation for Rooftop Greening Using Wood Waste (폐목질 자원을 이용한 옥상녹화용 식생기반재의 물리 및 화학적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Many researchers have studied on rooftop greening that can be installed in abandoned spaces on a building roof. The most important issue in rooftop greening is the soil weight problem. The light greening materials are needed to solve this problem. Therefore, many alternative materials against the soil were investigated for rooftop greening. In this study, the waste wood chips and the waste paper slurry were evaluated as the lightweight vegetation foundation for rooftop greening. It also has a meaning for recycling of waste materials. The mixture ratio of waste wood chips to waste paper slurry for the board (the foundation of greening) was 60 to 40. The wet strength resin and the sizing agent were additionally added with different amount. After the forming of the board, physical and chemical properties were tested with the variation of wet strength resin and sizing agent. As the result of the test, the board with 15% of wet strength resin in the wet condition showed the highest strength. Futhermore, the moisture evaporation loss from the board surface with sizing agent was much lower than that from the board without sizing agent. Therefore, it was clear that the sizing agent was effective for water retention. The change of thickness in the wet condition was less than 1 mm, and it showed that the board is the predominant material on the dimensional stability. The average pH value of the board was ranged from 7.6 to 8.25.

Manufacture of Medium Density Fiberboard from Exploded MDF Waste (폐 MDF 폭쇄 섬유로부터의 MDF제조)

  • This study was carried out to displace traditional virgin wood fiber by exploded MDF-waste fiber for the manufacture of medium density fiberboard. MDF waste was exploded in condition of $215^{\circ}C,20$ minutes. The higher the mixing ratio of exploded MDF-waste fiber, the lower the MOR and IB of MDF. There was no difference of formaldehyde emission by desiccator method between virgin wood fiber and exploded MDF-waste fiber. Adding $25^{\circ}C$ of exploded MDF-waste fiber met the KS of MDF 15 type.

  • This study investigated and discussed the drying characteristics of municipal wood wastes (wood, particle board, medium density fiber-board(MDF)) in the $N_2$ environment with an isothermal thermogravimetric analyzer. The drying rate could be expressed by a first order reaction model on remaining fraction of moisture. The activation energy ranged from 12.72 kJ/g mol to 18.31 kJ/g mol and the frequency factor from 0.2155 1/s to 1.249 1/s.

  • The optimal conditions for producing levulinic acid from office waste paper were investigated. Glucose was produced by enzymatic hydrolysis and its yield maximized by varying the soaking time of the substrate and amounts of enzyme and substrate. The optimal conditions to produce levulinic acid using the hydrolysate were determined by response surface methodology, with reaction temperature and catalyst (sulfuric acid) concentration as independent variables. The production model was assessed with an ANOVA regression analysis, and the results indicate its suitability for levulinic acid production (p, F, and lack-of-fit values were 0.003, 20.1, and 0.058, respectively). The optimal conditions were a reaction time of 56.27 min and catalyst concentration of 5.9% with a predicted yield of 2.588 g/L. We verified the findings under the same conditions and obtained 2.323 g/L of levulinic acid.

  • Suspended wood waste was being inflow into the dam and the problem of waste disposal has been occurred. In this study, ethanol production using woody floater wastes was performed to estimate value in use for raw material of renewable energy. To achieve the goal, experiments of acid hydrolysis and ethanol fermentation using dam woody floater as raw materials for bioethanol was carried out. In the results of field survey in the chungju dam, kind of woody floater was mainly Japanese larch (Larix leptolepis) and hybrid poplar (Populus tomentiglandulosa). The results of sugar extraction showed that sugar content was higher in Larix leptolepis than Populus tomentiglandulosa. Extracted sugar from wood waste was effective consumed by yeast(P. Stipitis and S cerevisiae). In the experiment consumption of sugar including glucose, galactose and xylose, the consumption rate of S. cerevisiae is faster than that of P. stipitis. and efficiency for ethanol production is higer in S. cerevisiae than P. stipitis. Also it can be confirmed that resource as ethanol production using wood waste was available.

Combustion and Mechanical Properties of Fire Retardant Treated Waste Paper-Waste Acrylic Raw Fiber Composite Board

  • Shredded waste newspapers, waste acrylic raw fibers, and urea-formaldehyde (UF) adhesives, at 10% by weight on raw material, were used to produce recycled waste paper-waste acrylic raw fiber composite boards in laboratory scale experiments. The physical and mechanical properties of fire retardant treated recycled waste paper-waste acrylic raw fiber composite boards were examined to investigate the possibility of using the composites as internal finishing materials with specific gravities of 0.8 and 1.0, containing 5, 10, 20, and 30(wt.%) of waste acrylic raw fiber and 10, 15, 20, and 25(wt.%) of fire retardant (inorganic chemical, FR-7®) using the fabricating method used by commercial fiberboard manufacturers. The bending modulus of rupture increased as board density increased, decreased as waste acrylic raw fiber content increased, and also decreased as the fire retardant content increased. Mechanical properties were a little inferior to medium density fiberboard (MDF) or hardboard (HB), but significantly superior to gypsum board (GB) and insulation board (IB). The incombustibility of the fire retardant treated composite board increased on increasing the fire retardant content. The study shows that there is a possibility that composites made of recycled waste paper and waste acrylic raw fiber can be use as fire retardant internal finishing materials.

Basic Study on the Characteristics of Wooden Sidewalk Pavement Material using Wood Waste Chip (폐목재 칩을 활용한 목질계 보도포장재의 특성에 대한 기초연구)

  • An experiment was conducted to suggest the road pavement material combining wooden chip crushed from little useful roots and branches from logging sites or wood waste from construction sites with urethane resin. For the specimen, the mass ratio of urethane resin to construction wood waste chip/lumber waster chip was set to three different levels of 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0, which was measured, mixed with mixer, and molded; 7 days after, tensile strength test, elasticity test using golf balls and steel balls, permeability coefficient measurement, and flammability test were executed. As the result, the tensile strength of the specimen at the dry state in the air exhibited the range of 0.2-1.1MPa, and there was no change after 7 days of aging. When submerged in water, however, the strength was partially diminished; the diminishing rate was greater for less urethane resin usage, and therefore it appears desirable to set the mass ratio of resin to the wood waste chip over 0.75 to consider the moisture intrusion by precipitation and such. As the result of elasticity test, the GB and SB coefficients of the specimen using wood waste chips and urethane resin were measured to be low at below 20%, exhibiting excellent elasticity as road pavement material. Also, the permeability coefficient was over 0.5mm/sec for specimens of all combinations, exceeding the standard value required after construction for permeable pavement material, and the flammability of wood-type pavement material was evaluated to have no practical issues.

Basic Properties of Waste Wood-Plastic Composite Panels by Hot Press Molding Method (열압 성형법에 의한 폐목재-플라스틱 복합패널의 기초적 성질)

  • A styrene solution of waste expanded polystyrene with a crosslinking agent and an initiator was used as a binder for waste wood-plastic composite panels. The waste wood-plastic composite panels are prepared with various binder contents and filler-binder ratios by using a hot press molding method. The apparent density of the composite panels is increased with increasing binder content and filler-binder ratio, while their water absorption and expansion in thickness are decreased with increasing binder content and filler-binder ratio. The maximum flexural strength and wet flexural strength of the composite panels are obtained at a binder content of 35% and a filler-binder ratio of 0.8. Decreases in the flexural strengths of the composite panels due to water immersion at 20 and $100^{\circ}C$ are hardly recognized at binder contents of 30% or more.

Synthesis and Characterization of Magnetic Cellulose Powder from Sawdust Waste

  • Timber industry waste is being examined for cellulose manufacturing to give important benefits. The study's goal is to investigate the properties of cellulose powder derived from sawdust waste after it has been reinforced with ferrous-ferric oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4-NPs). Sawdust cellulose powder was produced from Sengon (Albizia chinensis) wood waste in this study. The crushed sawdust waste is handled with alkalization and bleaching. Cellulose powder is then reinforced with Fe3O4-NPs at 10 wt.%, 20 wt.%, and 30 wt.%. The magnetic cellulose powder was analysed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared, scanning electron microscopy morphology, magnetic vibrating sample magnetometer, Brunauer-Emmett teller, and adsorption tests for Methylene Blue and Congo Red dyes. Structure study identifies sawdust as cellulose 1β, with peaks at 14°, 16°, and 22° diffraction angles. The addition of Fe3O4-NPs reduces the crystalline index of sawdust cellulose powder from 68.50% to 63.38%, and functional group bond analysis revealed many peak shifts indicating a change in the chemical bonds of magnetic cellulose powder. Incorporating Fe3O4-NPs into sawdust cellulose powder confers magnetic and superparamagnetic properties to the sawdust cellulose. Similarly, the surface texture of magnetic cellulose seems rougher as the surface area increases. These parameters imply a 31.8% increase in Congo Red adsorption, using adsorption kinetics based on the pseudo-first-order model.
