The Cultural and Environmental Unsoundness of the Chinese Public Squatting-Type Toilet: A Case Study toward a Sustainable Excreta Treatment System

  • The inconvenient truth of sustainable public squat toilet culture varies among nationalities. This culture may be comfortable to the people of China, yet uncomfortable to the non-Chinese, according to the adequate environmental management in Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture (YKAP), northern China. We conducted a series of field surveys and individual interviews (Chinese n = 1,000 and non-Chinese [foreign visitors] n = 100) on several aspects of the public squat toilet: structural properties, waste disposal methods, important factors, and overall satisfaction level. The significant factors in response to the public squat toilets were cleanliness, odor, toilet paper, temperature, soap, other facilities, and presence of cubicles. These factors should be policy priorities of the local government. In addition, 66.2% of Chinese and 91% of foreign visitors desired type E toilets (two full-high partition walls and a door). The results illustrate the nature of a sustainable and beautiful approach to the culturally and environmentally sound management of various types of public squat toilet in YKAP. The government needs to focus on the future-oriented and excreta treatment management of the sustainable toilet culture for residents and visitors of YKAP.

  • Current desulfurization and denitrification technologies have reached a considerable level in terms of reduction efficiency. However, when compared with the simultaneous reduction technology, the individual reduction technologies have issues such as economic disadvantages due to the difficulty to scale-up apparatus, secondary pollution from wastewater/waste during the treatment process, requirement of large facilities for post-treatment, and increased installation costs. Therefore, it is necessary to enable practical application of simultaneous SOx and NOx treatment technologies to remove two or more contaminants in one process. The present study analyzes a technology capable of maintaining simultaneous treatment of SOx and NOx even at low temperatures due to the electrochemically generated strong oxidation of the wet-pulse complex system. This system also reduces unreacted residual gas and secondary products through the wet scrubbing process. It addresses common problems of the existing fuel gas treatment methods such as SDR, SCR, and activated carbon adsorption (i.e., low treatment efficiency, expensive maintenance cost, large installation area, and energy loss). Experiments were performed with varying variables such as pulse voltage, reaction temperature, chemicals and additives ratios, liquid/gas ratio, structure of the aeration cleaning nozzle, and gas inlet concentration. The performance of individual and complex processes using the wet-pulse discharge reaction were analyzed and compared.

하이브리드시스템을 이용한 악취폐가스 처리 (Treatment of Malodorous Waste Air Using Hybrid System)

  • 본 연구에서는 광촉매반응기/폐가스 가습조(유동상호기 및 무산소조)를 포함한 바이오필터공정으로 이루어진 하이브리드시스템을 구축하여 퇴비공장 또는 공공시설에서 발생되는 황화수소, 암모니아 및 휘발성 유기화합물을 포함한 악취폐가스에 대한 처리효율을 제고하고 종합적인 적정 작업조건을 구축하였다. 악취가스(2 L/min)에 포함된 암모니아(300 ppmv)의 경우 광촉매반응기에서 약 22%가 제거되고, 폐가스 가습조에서 약 55%가 제거되고, 후 공정인 바이오필터에서 나머지인 약 23%가 모두 제거되었다. 악취가스에 포함된 톨루엔(100 ppmv)의 경우 광촉매반응공정에서 약 20%가 제거되고, 폐가스 가습조(유동상 호기 및 무산소조)에서 약 10% 제거되며 마지막 공정인 바이오필터에서 나머지 70% 모두가 제거되었다. 따라서 물에 용해도가 높은 암모니아의 경우에는 폐가스가습조에서 주로 제거되었고, 용해도가 낮은 톨루엔의 경우는 바이오필터에서 주로 제거되었다. 한편 황화수소(10 ppmv)는 광촉매반응공정에서 거의 처리되고 잔류 trace는 폐가스가습조에 용해되어서 바이오필터로 인입되는 가습된 feed에서 황화수소가 검지되지 않았다. 폐가스 가습조(유동상호기 및 무산소조)에서의 nitrate 농도는 무산소조에서 발생하는 탈질반응 때문에 무산소조 경우가 유동상호기조보다 약 3 ppm 정도 낮았다. 또한 폐가스가습조의 용존 암모니아 농도는 실험 시작부터 1,500~2,000 ppm 사이의 높은 값을 유지하였는데, 이는 폐가스 가습조 내부에 있는 용수에 포함된 염화암모늄 및 기타 암모니아성 질소원에 기인한다고 간주된다.

악취의 시공간적 발생 특성 및 분포도 분석 - 강원지역을 대상으로 - (A Study on the Characteristics and Distribution of the Time-Spatial Occurrence of Offensive Odors -Gangwon Province -)

  • Objectives: This study is aimed at offering basic data for making plans for offensive odor management after researching offensive odor occurrence and characteristics in Gangwon Province. Methods: The data used in the study is based on offensive odor data analyzed by the Gangwon Institute of Health and Environment from 2012 to 2019. The data were reclassified by year, month, facility, and region to identify characteristics of occurrence. Finally, a distribution map of offensive odors was created using ArcGIS. Results: The highest monthly frequency of offensive odor occurrence falls in June, August, and July, and the summer season and third quarter are the highest. According to the latest eight-year data for Gangwon Province, complaints about offensive odors in county areas are more frequent than those in city areas. There are many offensive odor complaints in Wonju, Cheorwon, and Heongsung. The main offensive odor emission facilities are livestock and waste treatment (recycling) facilities. Complaints about offensive odors are relatively lower the Yeongdong area than Yeongseo area, which is considered to be the result of characteristics of land-sea breezes and geographical factors. Offensive odors from livestock facilities count for an average of 53.9% of the total, and the inadequacy rate of livestock facilities averages 36.9%. Conclusions: To maintain a clean environment in Gangwon Province, it is strongly recommended that an offensive odor reduction plan for livestock facilities be established. Areas with a high density of offensive odor occurrence should be identified and systematically managed with short- and mid-term measures. If offensive odors is managed using GIS, it is possible to identify the characteristics of occurrence by time and space and also by facility. In addition, since systematic data management is possible, it is believed that a rapid response to offensive odors, prediction of their spread, and efficient management are possible.

  • 2003년과 2005년 각각 하수슬러지 및 음식물쓰레기 직매립이 금지되는 시기에 지렁이를 이용한 유기성폐기물처리기술은 환경 친화적 처리방법으로 유기성폐기물 처리비용적 측면에서도 매우 저렴한 처리방법으로 이용되고 있는 기술이다. 그러나 지렁이 이용기술은 도입초기의 이용기술이 현재에도 적용되고 있으며, 체계적인 연구 및 정책적인 지원의 부족 등으로 지렁이 퇴비화 산업의 발전에 많은 영향을 미치고 있다. 따라서 향후 지렁이 이용기술의 보급과 아울러 지렁이 퇴비화 산업의 발전을 위하여 기술적인 문제점인 과대한 사육부지이용 및 처리공정의 자동화 연구가 필요할 것으로 판단된다. 또한 지렁이 이용기술의 체계적인 연구와 국가적 차원의 정책적인 지원방안이 필요하다.

바이오가스 이용 기술지침 마련을 위한 연구(II) - 정밀모니터링 결과 중심으로 (A Study on Establishment of Technical Guideline of the Installation and Operation for the Biogas Utilization of Power generation and Stream - Results of the Precision Monitoring)

  • 본 연구는 유기성폐자원(가축분뇨, 음식물류폐기물, 음식물류폐수 등)의 바이오가스 이용에 대한 적정 설계 및 운전 기술지침서 마련하고자 현장조사와 정밀모니터링 등을 실시하였다. 정부의 중장기 바이오가스화 정책에 따라 폐자원의 자원화 시설 확충이 활발히 추진되고 있다. 하지만 생산된 바이오가스를 이용하여 발전 및 스팀으로 활용하는 시설은 효율이 아직은 저조하고 잦은 고장이 발생되고 있다. 전국 11개소 유기성폐자원 바이오가스화 시설을 대상으로 정밀모니터링을 실시하였다. 사계절 평균으로 정밀모니터링 결과를 정리하였을 때, 유기성폐자원 별 효율성 분석에서 유기성분해율은 VS기준 음식물/음폐수는 68.2 %, 가축분뇨는 66.8 %, 하수슬러지의 경우 46.2 %로 전체 평균 58.8 %로 분석되었다. 전처리 전후 바이오가스 성상을 분석한 결과 철염 및 탈황(건식, 습식)을 이용하여 전체 시설의 $H_2S$ 평균은 560 ppm으로 측정되었으며, 저감효율이 90% 이상인 경우 약 40 ppm 까지 감소할 수 있는 것을 확인하였다. 특히 소화조 내에 철염을 투입하면 처리효율 약 93 %이며, 평균 150 ppm까지 감소하는 것을 확인하였다. 제습의 경우 노점온도를 적용한 절대습도와 가스온도에 따른 상대습도를 분석하였으며, 제습설비가 유지보수가 잘되어 가동 중인 시설의 노점온도는 $14^{\circ}C$, 절대습도는 $12.6g/m^3$이며, 상대습도는 35 %로 측정되었다. 따라서 유기성폐자원의 바이오가스화 시설의 단점을 보완하고 바이오가스 이용 최적화 방안을 마련하기 위하여 정밀모니터링을 실시하였다.

막여과 정수처리공정에서 망간에 의한 막오염 특성 및 화학세정효율 평가 (Evaluation of membrane fouling characteristics due to manganese and chemical cleaning efficiency in microfiltration membrane process)

  • In water treatment process using microfiltration membranes, manganese is a substance that causes inorganic membrane fouling. As a result of analysis on the operation data taken from I WTP(Water Treatment Plant), it was confirmed that the increase of TMP was very severe during the period of manganese inflow. The membrane fouling fastened the increase of TMP and shortened the service time of filtration or the cleaning cycle. The TMP of the membrane increased to the maximum of $2.13kgf/cm^2$, but it was recovered to the initial level ($0.17kgf/cm^2$) by the 1st acid cleaning step. It was obvious that the main membrane fouling contaminants are due to inorganic substances. As a result of the analysis on the chemical waste, the concentrations of aluminum(146-164 mg/L) and manganese(110-126 mg/L) were very high. It is considered that aluminum was due to the residual unreacted during coagulation step as a pretreatment process. And manganese is thought to be due to the adsorption on the membrane surface as an adsorbate in feed water component during filtration step. For the efficient maintenance of the membrane filtration facilities, optimization of chemical concentration and CIP conditions is very important when finding the abnormal level of influent including foulants such as manganese.

보육시설 급식운영관리 실태 조사 (Assessment of Foodservice Management Performance at Child Care Centers)

  • This study was carried out to investigate foodservice management practices of 100 child care centers nationwide, and to provide background information for developing foodservice management policies at child care centers. Approximately 20% of the child care centers had a separate dining room; most of the centers were vulnerable to sanitation or safety problems. The percentage of the centers that planned menus was about 60% and 10% established standardized recipes. Fourteen percent of the centers kept records for distribution and menu evaluation and 33% kept sanitation management records. Since only 7% of the centers employed a dietitian, foodservice in most centers were not managed by professionals. The results of menu assessment revealed that 56.5% of the national/public child care centers received 19 points or higher out of 21 points, whereas 5.6% of the private child care centers received the same scores. Proper usage and storage of raw food, sanitary management of equipment and facilities, waste management/leftover food treatment, and basic facility of cooking zones were performed well by many centers. The overall scores of foodservice performance were only 31.2 out of 60 points, representing relatively poor safety management, food procurement management, and facilities and equipment management. These results indicate that the foodservice management of the child care centers are in a relatively poor state. Since nutrition management of the most centers was performed by non-professionals, it may not be possible to provide proper nutrition for health and normal growth of preschool children and to perform efficient nutrition education programs. The following suggestions are strongly recommended in order to improve foodservice performance at child care centers. First, foodservice administration should be performed by a dietitian, and second, efforts should be focused on strengthening nutrition and sanitation management.

건설폐기물 재활용 2차 제품에 대한 확률모델 기반 비용분석 (Probability-based Cost Analysis for Recycling Secondary Products from Construction Waste)

  • 본 연구에서는 토목건설 분야에서 활용 가능한 폐기물 재활용 2차 제품 후보군 각각에 대한 비용분석 결과를 제시하였다. 각각의 비용 항목에 내재된 불확실성을 고려하여 확률모델 기반 비용 분석을 수행하였으며, 2차 제품 제작에 의해 발생하는 이익 비용을 제시하였다. 폐기물 재활용 시 각각의 공정별 투입 비용 발생은 불가피하며, 이는 2차 제품 대상 후보군별로 달라지는데 제품별 실용화에서 경제성 확보를 위해서는 제품 품질향상 뿐만 아니라 투입 비용의 정확한 산정이 요구된다. 본 연구에서는 폐기물 재활용에 따른 비용분석을 통해 제품별 발생 가능한 이익과 이익발생 확률 산정법을 제시하였다. 재활용 비용분석 항목으로 폐기물 분류 비용, 재활용 처리시설로의 운반비용, 재활용 제품생산비용 등을 고려하였으며, 또한 재활용 제품생산에 따른 이익분석을 위해 폐기물이 재활용 되지 못하고 폐기될 경우와 재활용될 경우를 서로 비교하여 그 차이를 이익으로 환산하여 추정하였다. 건설폐기물 매립지까지 거리가 늘어날수록 재활용에 따른 이익발생이 증가하였고 재활용 시설까지의 거리는 이익발생에 영향을 주었으며, 또한 재활용 제품 선정, 재활용 처리시설의 최적위치 결정, 목표가격 결정 등에 유용하게 활용할 수 있음을 확인하였다.

대청호 정체수역의 수질예측과 관리 (Management of Water Quality of Embayments in Daechong Reservoir)

  • Water quality of Chongju and Daejeon Water Intake Tower Region, embayments in Daechong Reservoir was found to be worse than that of main lake after analysis of water which were sampled during April, July, October in 1993. Concentration of COD and SS at those two water intake tower sites were 2.8-5.6 mg/l and 2.2-3.2 mg/l, higher than that of main lake. T-N concentration of those two sites was 1.1-1.9 mg/l similar to that of main lake, and T-P concentration of those two sites was 0.14-0.18 mg/l, higher than that of main lake. This study used water quality model of embayment which can analyse pollutant loads from stream and surrounding land use, advection, decay, and diffusion transport between embayment and main lake. The model can predict water quality of embayment according to the change of pollutant load, water elevation of embayment, quantity of water intake in order to suggest water quality management. This study suggests embayment water quality management alternatives, 1) construction of waste water treatment facilities at embayment and main lake for the decrease of pollutant loading, 2) water intake at main lake less polluted or eutrophicated than embayment, and 3) outflow elevation selection for polluted hypolimnion water outflow during stratification.
