The objectives of this study are to propose a suitable treatment facility for waste energy recovery after analyzing the waste generation and disposal situation in Jejudo, to establish the plan to install the solar photovoltaics and wind power plant considering the site conditions and finally to establish the environmental energy town plan in conjunction with the existing facilities. The food waste biogas plant is selected as the treatment capacity of 200 ton/day. It is estimated that the biogas plant will produce the electricity of 7,594 MWh per year, which will reduce the greenhouse gas of 4,177 $tCO_2$ per year. The solar photovoltaics and wind power plant will produce the electricity of 13,410 MWh per year, which will reduce the greenhouse gas of 7,375 $tCO_2$ per year. Environmental energy town will give us the reduction of operating cost by centralized treatment of residues and byproducts, and by efficient utilization of produced energy.
The waste treatment fee and energy production effect of Wonju city RDF plant, the first RDF manufacturing plant in Korea, were investigated in the study. All plant operation data, like total weight of received wastes, produced RDF and separated rejects in processes were fully recorded for mass balance calculation of the plant in 2009. Also all consumed oil and electricity were recorded for energy balance calculation. The results showed that the waste treatment fee not including the RDF sales price of 25,000 won/ton-RDF was 116,573 won/ton-MSW and it went down to 105,298 won when included the RDF price. Produced RDF was 40.2% of total received waste in weight. Three components analysis by mass balance calculation of total received waste showed that Wonju city's MSW was 32.4% of combustible, 37.5% of water and 30.1% of incombustible respectively. Energy effect was found that total amount of produced energy was about 4 times more than that of consumed energy.
This study analyzes the economic efficiency of utilizing hot waste water at a thermoelectric power plant, which is part of recent projects supported by the Korean government to foster new energy industry. The author proposes an institution that provides economic incentives to promote the project. Based on a method of calculating Levelized cost of energy (LCOE), this study finds that the LCOE of using hot waste water at power plants is higher than that of oil boiler, biomass and a power plant's auxiliary steam but similar to that of the geothermal system. Also, according to sensitivity analysis on the LCOE of each element in the system of using hot waste water, a distance of heat supply is most sensitive. Therefore, this study shows that when the government devises an incentive-based institution to expand the project of utilizing hot waste water, it is necessary to establish Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) weights that are differentiated by a distance of heat supply.
A methodology to predict the output performance of small hydro power plant using treated effluent in waste water treatment plant has been studied. Existing waste water treatment plant located in Kyunggi-Do were selected and the output performance characteristics for these plants were analyzed. .Based on the models developed in this study, the hydrologic performance characteristics for SHP sites have been analyzed. The results show that the flow duration characteristics of small hydropower plant for waste water treatment plant have quite differences compared with small hydropower plant for the river. As a result, it was found that the developed model in this study can be used to analyze the output characteristics for small hydro power in waste water treatment plant. Additionally, primary design specifications such as design flowrate, capacity, operational rate and annual electricity production were estimated and discussed. It was found that the models developed in this study can be used to decide the design performance of small hydropower plant for waste water treatment plant effectively.

The decommissioning of a nuclear power plant generates large amounts of radioactive waste, which is of several types. Radioactive concrete powder is classified as low-level waste, which can be disposed of in a landfill. However, its safe disposal in a landfill requires that it be immobilized by solidification using cement. Herein, a safety assessment on the disposal of solidified radioactive concrete powder waste in a conceptual landfill site is performed using RESRAD. Furthermore, sensitivity analyses of certain selected input parameters are conducted to investigate their impact on exposure doses. The exposure doses are estimated, and the relative impact of each pathway on them during the disposal of this waste is assessed. The results of this study can be used to obtain information for designing a landfill site for the safe disposal of low-level radioactive waste generated from the decommissioning of a nuclear power plant.

Korean government plans to establish large-scale horticulture facility complexes using reclaimed land in order to improve the national competitiveness of agriculture at the government level. One of the most significant problems arising from the establishment of those large-scale horticulture facilities is that these facilities still largely depend on a fossil fuel and they require 24 h a day heating during the winter season in order to provide the necessary breeding conditions for greenhouse crops. These facilities show large energy consumption due to the use of coverings with large heat transmission coefficients such as vinyl and glass during heating in the winter season. This study investigated the applicability of waste heat from power plant for large-scale horticulture facilities by evaluating the waste heat water temperature, heat loss and energy saving performance as a function of distance between power plant and greenhouse. As a result, utilizing power plant waste heat can reduce the energy consumption by around 85% compared to the conventional gas boiler, regardless of the distance between power plant and greenhouse.
In this study, waste heat of Jeju City Waste Environment Center is investigated and the utilization method is suggested with economical analysis of additional investment that needed for new facility. Energy balance of the typical facilities is considered in this study such as incineration plant and LFG power plant. The payback period of the investment which is used for the LFG power plant waste heat utilization facility is about 2.4 years and the economic profit of the facility during 10 years operation is up to 926 million won.

An introduction of landfill tax has been recently in issue in order to raise the financial resource for establishing waste resource-circulation society. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the plan of increasing energy recovery from waste at Incheon Metropolitan City, and to propose several points to be considered in terms of introducing the landfill tax. There are a lot of problems that impede energy recovery from waste at Incheon Metropolitan City, such as high-calorific waste from decrease of food waste to the municipal incineration plant, metals and batteries in the standard plastic garbage bag, etc. Alternative policies to solve these major problems have been drawn.

In the energy-guzzling industries such as steel making and cement, power plants utilizing waste heat have been attracting attention to increase energy efficiency. However, the existing economic analysis system doesn't consider the special working fluids and the cost models of the main equipment used in the waste heat recovery power plant. So it is difficult to estimate the plant economics accurately. Therefore, It is required to develop a economic analysis module that can more accurately evaluate for the power plant. In this study, the systems engineering approach was used to design and develop the module that systematically reflects the characteristics of the power plant and various requirements. Specifically, first, the special working fluids and main equipment applied to the power plant were investigated. Next, the cost models for each equipment were developed. Finally, the economic analysis module based on this was developed.

Most of irradiated graphite that should be disposed comes from moderators and reflectors of nuclear power plants. The quantity of irradiated graphite could be higher in the future if high-temperature reactors (HTRs) will be deployed. In this case noteworthy quantities of fuel pebbles containing semi-graphitic carbonaceous material should be added to the already existing 250,000 tons of irradiated graphite. Industry graphite is largely used in industrial applications for its high thermal and electrical conductivity and thermal and chemical resistance, making it a valuable material. Irradiated graphite constitutes a waste management challenge owing to the presence of long-lived radionuclides, such as 14C and 36Cl. In the ENEA Nuclear Material Characterization Laboratory it has been successfully designed a procedure based on the exfoliation process organic solvent assisted, with the purpose of investigate the possibility of achieving graphite significantly less toxic that could be recycled for other purpose [1]. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the possibility of the scalability from laboratory to industrial dimensions of the exfoliation process and provide the prototype of a chemical plant for the treatment of irradiated graphite.
