  • It is very important to utilize effectively fibrous waste paper in terms of cost savings, environmental effects, and governmental policies. The quality of final products and runnability of papermaking process are primarily affected by constitutions of fibrous raw materials. In specific, board grade paper depends directly on compositions of waste paper bales. At present, the raw materials of board grade paper are mainly derived from lots kinds of wastepaper. Some papermaking countries, like EU, USA and Japan have advanced classification and management systems of recycled fiber, but Korea has not yet organized systematically. In this study, evaluation of wastepaper bale compositions and their fiber properties were carried out for effective utilization of fibrous raw materials for board grade paper production. 3 kinds of wastepaper bales were classified to fibrous or non-fibrous materials. In case of fibrous materials, KOCC, kraft sack paper and white duplex board matters were main component in total weight basis, and in case of non-fibrous materials, vinyl, plastic and cloth matters were main component, in turns. 3 representative kinds of waste paper were disintegrated and classified, and then prepared to handsheet for evaluation of recycled fiber property. Consequently, fines and ash content of waste paper, isolated from KOCC and white duplex board were higher than that of kraft sack paper. pH values of all kinds of waste fibers were neutral or weak alkaline.

  • In this study, the composition and physico-chemical characteristics of municipal solid waste (MWS) which was treated in national park area kyungnam-do landfill were investigated. It is necessary to measure the characteristics of MSW and sludge to build a waste treatment facility, the data-base and total managing of the landfill. This MSW was composed of 34.62% of food wastes, 36.05% of papers, 15.37% of plastics & vinyls, 2.28% of textiles, 3.33% of wood, 0.49% of rubber & leathers and others, respectively. Most of MSW are composed of food, paper and plastic waste and more than 90% was combustible waste. For three components, moisture is 29.84%, combustible component is 62.30% and ash is 7.86%. The chemical element has the high order of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen on the dry basis of wastes. Also, the low heating value of the MSW which is measured by calorimeter is calculated as 2377.8kcal/kg. low heating value of the sludge is calculated as 338.06kcal/kg.

  • Industrial combustible waste is very valuable source for refuse derived solid fuel since its heating value is usually over 3,000kcal/kg. Especially, synthetic high molecular compound which is high of productivity and heating value is used as raw material in many cases. Film type plastic has been widely used for producing RPF because their shaping is easy and they has high heating value. On the other hand, the possibility of various type of waste as a source for RPF in this study. It has been found that resin compound drived and tire derived solid fuel showed more than 6,000kcal/kg of heating value. But the heating value decreased by adding paper and wood waste.

  • The industrial waste is becoming a big problem in the aspect of spatial and environmental in domestic and international. Therefore, the waste reduction and recycling policy has been being implemented as a way to solve this problem. The engineered stone sludge, which is waste, is generated duing the engineered stone production process. since engineered stone sludge is mostly treated by landfill, an increase in the amount of the sludge leads to an increase in landfill sites and treatment costs. therefore, there is a need for a method of resourcization with engineered stone sludge. So, laboratory tests (Plastic and liquid limits, compaction, unconfined compression and permeability test) were conducted to confirm the possibility of using engineered stone sludge mixed with weathered granite soil as a cover material for landfill in this study. The result shows that the mixed soil material with less that 62.5% of engineered stone sludge can be used as a cover material for landfill.

  • Today, plastic waste has become a critical social issue due to the increasing of plastic consumption. Korean annual per capita plastic consumption was 132 kg, the most plastic consuming country in the world. Internationally, Carbon Neutral Agreement is underway due to global warming, consumers' interest and needs for biomass-based plastics has also been increased. In this study, film was produced by adding composite use additives to the biomass-based plastics according to concentration, and the resulting changes in discharge volume, melt index, and tensile strength were investigated. Melt index (MI) was significantly higher in PLA and PBAT than in petroleum-based resin LLDPE and LDPE. Also, among the same resin or in the same treatment group, MI has been increased when the heating temperature is increased. The discharge volume and gravity of the BDP-2 to which 4% compatibilizer was added were found to be higher among all treatments, while the tensile strength of MD and TD was also higher. BDP-2 was suitable to the film producing methods for biodegradable film production.

  • This research were performed to evaluate co-incineration characteristics of sewage sludge and industrial waste in rotary kiln incinerator, and provide the fundamental data. Plastic portion (42.55%) in this industrial waste showed over 3 times higher than that (11.92%) of paper. Korean proximate analysis of the waste mixed with sewage sludge and industrial waste (3 : 7, volumetric basis) showed 16.3% of moisture, 70.5% of volatile solids, and 13.2% of ash, respectively. Low heating value of the mixed waste was 4,513kcal/kg. So it was thought that the mixed waste of sewage sludge and industrial waste (containing 43% of plastics and 12% papers) has enough heating value for co-incineration. The incineration of mixed waste showed the lowest SOx and NOx concentrations at $700^{\circ}C$. However, the operation at $950^{\circ}C$ was feasible in considering dioxin and the other hazardous gases. It was concluded that use of $Ca(OH)_2$ should be under investigation for the operation at $950^{\circ}C$.

  • The present study evaluated experimentally the effects of the type and content of plastic fine aggregates on cement mortar in order to utilize waste platics as raw materials of concrete. The two kinds of plastics, LLDPE and HDPE were used, and the mixing rate of plastic fine aggregates was increased 0, 25, 50, 75, 100%. The mortar of LLDPE fine aggregate and HDPE fine aggregate showed similar tendency in flow and material separation resistance, density and water absorption, compressive strength and flexural strength by age. The flowability of mortar mixed with plastic fine aggregates was increased up to 50% but decreased at 75% or more. The material separation resistance of mortar with plastic fine aggregates was also dramatically decreased. On the other hand, due to the low density of plastics, the density of mortar decreased with the mixing of plastic fine aggregates. Due to the low adhesion between plastic fine aggregates and cement, the compressive strength by age was decreased in proportion to the mixing ratio of plastic aggregate, but the flexural strength of each age decreased with maintaining a certain level at 50% or more of plastic fine aggregate content.

  • The steady growth in the use of plastic materials in packaging applications has caused an increasing concern about the environment and the problem of solid waste disposal. Therefore, the recycling of plastics is the very important problem, which must be solved technically and environmentally [1]. It is technically feasible to recycle, recover and reuse all of the plastics discarded, but economics limit the degree of recycling at this time.(omitted)
