  • The total hydrocarbon distribution of oil products obtained from the pyrolysis of four kinds of mixtures of polyethylene-polystyrene waste has been studied by multidimensional chromatography(high performance liquid chromatography followed by capillary gas chromatography)/mass spectrometry. Saturated, unsaturated and aromatic hydrocarbons in oil products were selectively pre-separated according to structural groups by HPLC and the weight fraction of each group was estimated by analysis of each component using GC-FID response factors. The hydrocarbon distribution of aliphatic fraction consists of $C_{5}$ to $C_{25}$ saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons. And that of aromatics fraction consists of benzene, toluene, xylene, styrene, propenyl benzene, naphthalene, and some of derivatives. Pyrolysis temperature did not affect the ratio of total weight fraction of aliphatic over aromatic hydrocarbon distribution in case of PS only and PE-PS mixtures (1:1 and 1:4 wt. ratio) as a feed while affected the ratio of total wt. fraction in case of PE only. The optimal temperature for the maximum oil production was $600^{\circ}C$ for pyrolysis of PS and 1:1 and 1:4 mixtures of PE and PS. The optimal condition for aromatic recovery was $600^{\circ}C$ with 1:1 mixture of PE and PS. In this condition, aromatic was produced up to 90% of total oil product. The maximum yield of toluene, xylene, styrene, and propenyl benzene were 8.6, 8.9, 51.0 and 7.4% of feed for pyrolysis PS at $700^{\circ}C$, respectively. However, only 1.3% naphthalene was recovered at $700^{\circ}C$ with 1:1 PE:PS(by wt.).

  • Copyrolysis of biomass/plastic mixture was carried out from room temperature to $600^{\circ}C$ with varing the heating rates of 10, 20, and $30^{\circ}C/min$ using a thermogravimetric analyzer. Waste wood chip (WWC) and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) were selected as a biomass and plastic, respectively. Individual pyrolysis temperature ranges were $430{\sim}550^{\circ}C$ and $230{\sim}600^{\circ}C$ for LLDPE and WWC, respectively. For the copyrolysis of WWC and LLDPE, the decomposition temperature range of WWC was not varied, while the decomposition temperature range of LLDEP was increased to a higher temperature. The results imply that the interaction might occur between LLDEP and WWC during copyolyis of LLDPE and WWC.

  • Bioplastics are attracting attention as a substitute for conventional petroleum-based plastics because they are carbon neutral and can be biodegradable. This study estimated economic and environmental impact of regulating the petroleum-based plastics industry and fostering the bioplastics industry using a Recursive Dynamic CGE Model of the Korean Economy. Results show that the regulation of the conventional plastics industry exhibits a positive environmental impact by reducing greenhouse gases and plastic waste and a negative economic impact with a decrease in GDP. Meanwhile, fostering the bioplastics industry with regulation on conventional plastics industry has similar levels of greenhouse gas and waste reduction effects when there is only regulation on the conventional plastics industry. It is also shown that expanding the production of bioplastics industry offsets existing economic losses as a form of increased GDP. If petroleum-based plastics are replaced through the expansion of bioplastics production, it can contribute to the decoupling of greenhouse gas emissions and plastic waste from economic growth.

  • Plastic product is increasing by the growth of its demand and most of refused plastics are incinerated or reclaimed. However, the refused plastic is not easily decomposed and has the environmental problem with its various toxic gas in case of incineration. Therefore, many countries such as USA, Japan, Germany and other developed industrial countries as well as Korea are interested in studying the recyclable resource of refused plastic. The macromolecular waste pyrolysis has the advantage of collecting of raw materials in high price and can at least get fuel gas or oil with high heat capacity. It also discharges low waste gas and low toxic gas including SOx, NOx and HCl heavy metals. However, pyrolyzed oil includes enough excess unsaturated hydrocarbons to form tar, which can cause the nozzle of engines to plug when pyrolyzed oil is used as fuel. Activated carbon was proven to have prominent adsorption capability among the other adsorbents that were mainly composed of carbon. This study examined the possibility of application in activated charcoal of its solid formation by analysing the feature of pyrolysis which is one of the chemical recycling methods and getting chemical analysis of the product and activated energy. Analyze the element of the oil produced by pyrolysis using GC-MS. The experiment of tar adsorption using fly-ash showed that fly-ash improved the optical intensity of pyrolyzed oil and decreased oxygen compounds in the pyrolyzed oil.

  • The issue of waste and its recycling is perceived as a worldwide environmental problem, and the plastic waste is perceived as the biggest social problem threatening the lives of mankind. The vertical protective net, manufactured by using the plastic resin is vertically installed on the outside in case of formwork at the construction site, in order to prevent the fallen objects and scattered dusts. The objective of this study is to understand the actual use status of vertical protective net in the construction site, to examine the changes in the environment-related regulations recently strengthened in the construction site, and also to improve the field technicians' perception of it. And based on it, this study aims to suggest the measures for using the rational and environment-friendly materials and also for promoting the recycling of vertical protective net as the vertical protective nets made of plastic resin are thoughtlessly used in the construction site.

  • In order to study the behaviors of inorganic fillers in recycling of the waste agricultural plastic films, the washed PE fluffs from Shihwa and Jungeup Plant belonging to ENVICO were used respectively. First of all, the test pellets were manufactured by adding of inorganic fillers suchlike calcium carbonate and calpet by certain portions to PE fluffs and then the tested sheets were formed. The mechanical and thermal properties of the samples were measured and compared with others. The items measured were tensile, flexural, Izod impact, HDT, MFT, and so on. Morphologies were also investigated for various samples using the SEM. Finally, optimum ratios between recycled PE and inorganic additives were found out for the best products in physical condition as well as in economic point of view.

  • This study is concerned with a design methodology of optimized fuzzy clustering-based neural network classifier for classifying black plastic. Since the amount of waste plastic is increased every year, the technique for recycling waste plastic is getting more attention. The proposed classifier is on a basis of architecture of radial basis function neural network. The hidden layer of the proposed classifier is composed to FCM clustering instead of activation functions, while connection weights are formed as the linear functions and their coefficients are estimated by the local least squares estimator (LLSE)-based learning. Because the raw dataset collected from Raman spectroscopy include high-dimensional variables over about three thousands, principal component analysis(PCA) is applied for the dimensional reduction. In addition, artificial bee colony(ABC), which is one of the evolutionary algorithm, is used in order to identify the architecture and parameters of the proposed network. In experiment, the proposed classifier sorts the three kinds of plastics which is the most largely discharged in the real world. The effectiveness of the proposed classifier is proved through a comparison of performance between dataset obtained from chemical analysis and entire dataset extracted directly from Raman spectroscopy.

  • The polymer blends of waste polyvinyl chloride (RPVC) and waste polyethylene(RPE) were prepared by melt mixing, and their morphology and tensile properties were evaluated after the copolymers having an ethylene group in backbone and ester group in side position were added as comptatibilizers. The blend compositions were varied as follows ; RPVC/RPE 85/15 wt%, where RPVC formed a continuous phase : 50/50, mid composition : 15/85, RPE a continuous phase. The blends revealed a very low compatibility between component polymers because they showed domain sizes greater than $10\mu\textrm{m}$ over all compositions, especially the worst compatibility around mid composition. The blends showed higher compatibility when ethylene vinylacetate copolymer(EVA) and ethylene ethylacrylate-graft-methyl methacrylate copolymers(EEA-MMA) were added.

  • In this study, the physico-chemical characteristics of municipal solid waste (MWS) which was treated in gangwon area were investigated. It is necessary to measure the characteristics of municipal solid waste for build a waste treatment and RDF facility and for data-base and total managing of the landfill. It was found that the average density of solid wastes is in the range of $101.8{\sim}199.8kg/m^3$. This MSW was composed of 30.7% of food wastes, 36.3% of papers, 15.8% of plastics & vinyls, 1.9% of textiles, 3.2% of wood and 1.5% of rubber & leathers respectively. Most of MSW are composed of food, paper and plastic waste and the combustible waste is more than 90%. For three components, moisture is 44.6%, combustible component is 47.7% and ash is 7.7% respectively. The chemical elements are carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen on the dry basis of wastes. The low heating value of the MSW measured by calorimeter was obtained as 2,631 kcal/kg, and the high heating value of the MSW was obtained as 3,310 kcal/kg.
