Korea Recycling Policy for Inorganic Mineral Waste

  • Along with the expansion of industrial activities, the quantity of industrial waste sludge is increasing, and the treatment/disposal of wastes is a social problem regarding the preservation of the environment. In particular, recycling the sludge as a raw material is actively required considering the situation of Korea, which is poor in natural resources and energy. Lime is a necessity for treatment of waste sludge, which often can be made recyclable by lime treatment. In this thesis, a brief description has been given of my views on the ordinary treatment of waste sludge and the effective use of inorganic industrial waste sludge focusing on lime.

석회를 이용한 펄프공장 폐액의 화학적 처리에 관한 연구 (The study of chemical treatment of pulp mill bleaching waste liquor using lime)

  • This study was conducted to know the possibility of reducing lime dosage by recycling sludge from bleaching wastewater lime coagulation settlement treatment at pulp mill process. In case of bleaching wastewater at the pulp mill process, when the lime dosage was increased, the removal efficiency of TSS(Total Suspended Solids) was increased, proportionally, but the organic removal efficiency was increased very slowly. It was concluded that sludge recycling at the lime coagulation settlement process was effective method to reduce the requirement of lime dosage. At the lime coagulation settlement process with sludge recycling, when the recycling number was increased, the organic removal efficiency was decreased, sharply. It was evaluated that the pH could be the basic standard for lime supplement by sludge recycling.

Estimation of Alkali Overdosing in a Lime Neutralization Process for Acid Mine Drainage

  • Lime has been used for the neutralization of acidic waste because it is cheap and available in large quantities. The resulting sludge often contains a considerable amount of unreacted lime due to alkali overdosing, even during automatic neutralization processes, which mainly arises from the poor solubility of lime. The sludge cake from lime neutralization of Ilkwang Mine also contained high percentages of calcium and magnesium. The elemental content of the sludge cake was compared with those obtained from a simulation of the lime neutralization facility installed at Ilkwang Mine. A Goldsim® model estimated the degree of lime overdosing to be 19.1% based on the fractions of ferrous oxide. The analysis suggests that resolubilization of aluminum hydroxide could occur in the settling basin, in which pH exceeded 10 due to the continued dissolution of the overdosed lime. The present study demonstrated that chemical analysis of sludge combined with process simulation could provide a reasonable estimate of mass balance and chemistry in a neutralization facility for acid mine drainage.

연직배수재를 이용한 폐석회 슬러지의 지반개량 효과 (Soil Improvement Effect of Waste Lime Sludge Using Prefabricated Vertical Drains)

  • 최근 우리나라는 석회산업의 부산물인 폐석회의 처리문제로 많은 분쟁이 발생하고 있다. 폐석회는 높은 함수비를 갖고 있어 이를 처리하기 위해서는 적절한 탈수과정이 선행되어야 한다. 본 연구는 연직배수공법을 활용하여 폐석회의 높은 함수비를 저하시키고 지반의 안정화를 촉진시키기 위한 효율적인 방안에 대하여 연구하였다. 즉, 폐석회 슬러지로 구성된 지반내에 기성연직 배수재를 설치하였을때, 압밀도와 간극수압의 소산, 침하량 변화, 지지력 증가를 평가하였다. 실험 결과를 고찰해 보면, PBD가 원형드레인 보다 압밀계수가 2배정도 크게 나타났다. 전반적으로 침하량과 간극수압의 소산, 통수량을 비교하면 두 방법이 서로 유사한 경향을 보이고 있으나, PBD가 원형드레인보다 초기 간극수가 더 효과적으로 배수되는 것을 알 수 있었다. 실내배수실험 후 SEM 촬영에 의한 배수재의 필터 층을 살펴보면, PBD에 비해 원형드레인의 필터가 막힘현상이 심한 것을 알 수 있었다. 폐석회지반의 지반개량효과와 간극수의 배수는 PBD가 우수하며, 원형드레인은 타설간격이 길고 PBD와 같은 섬유배열이 균질한 필터로 교환하여 사용할 때 효율성이 증대할 것이라 예상된다.

  • 석회(石灰)를 첨가(添加)한 맥주오염(麥酒汚泥)를 신개간지(新開墾地) 토양(土壤)에 직접시용(直接施用)하고 옥수수에 대(對)한 비교(肥效)를 검토(檢討)한 결과(結果)는 다음과 같다. 전토양(田土壤)에서 석회(石灰)를 첨가(添加)한 맥주오염(麥酒汚泥)의 무기화(無機化)는 생오염(生汚泥)에 비(比)하여 빨랐으며 이는 석회첨가(石灰添加) 오염(汚泥)의 C/N율(率)이 낮고 Ca함량(含量)이 높았던 것에 기인(基因)된 것 같다. 맥주오염(麥酒汚泥) 시용량(施用量)이 증가(增加)할수록 생육상황(生育狀況)이 양호(良好)하고 수량(收量)이 증가(增加)되었으며 토양중(土壤中) 질소(窒素) 및 유기물(有機物) 함량(含量)도 같은 경향(傾向)이었다. 그러나 석회첨가(石灰添加) 오염(汚泥)에서 암모니아태(態) 질소(窒素) 휘산(揮散)이 높은 것으로 판단(判斷)되어 생오염(生汚泥)가 유기자원(有機資源)으로서는 더 유망(有望)한 것으로 보인다.

위생매립지 차수재로써의 부산석회 이용에 관한 연구 (A study on using the lime sludge as a sanitary landfill liner)

  • 본 연구에서는 위생매립지 차수재로써 부산석회의 이용방안을 검토하기 위하여 1) 부산석회의 지반 공학적 특성, 2) 오염물질 거동특성, 그리고 3) 용출특성을 살펴보았다. 연구결과 부산석회의 투수계수는 차수재의 허용 최대 투수계수($10^{-7}$ cm/s)보다 약 10배정도 낮은 투수계수를 보였다. 유기물(페놀)과 중금속(Cu, Pb)에 대한 지연효과는 부산석회의 높은 pH(> 11)로 인해 중금속에 대한 지연효과가 더 큰 것으로 나타났다. 용출실험 결과 비록 규제치를 상회하지는 않았지만, Pb과 Cd이 제한 기준치에 근접한 농도를 나타내어 지속적인 관찰이 요구되는 물질로 나타났다.

  • Dewatering sludge using inorganic chemicals with polymer has been evaded for reuse on account of the risks of high heavy metals contained and soil acidification. Composting feasibility of coagulation & dewatering sludges produced from livestock waste treatment plant was investigated. The results of analysis prove that dewatering sludge is valuable matter with suitable elements for composting if high quality ferric chloride ($FeCl_3$) is used for coagulation & dewatering process. In pot-cultivation of harvestes, using effects of dewatering sludge improved with lime treatment was very effective. The results of pot-cultivation proved that harms of crops according to different acid tolerances were not detected. But it was not applied to crops with weak acid tolerance or greenhouse for free from gas damage. Also, Further studies and monitorings are necessary to use sludges because results of pot-cultivation were generated differently by characteristics of soil, nutrient demand of plants, mature degree of sludge, consecutive cultivation and etc.

  • Acid mine drainage(AMD) is one of the most serious environmental concerns associated with the mining industry around the world. The objective of this study is to assess the potential of sewage sludge as a carbon source for sulfate reducing bacteria and waste lime and steel slag as a neutralize agent for acid mine drainage bioremediation for use in permeable reactive materials. The study was performed using synthetic AMD in six column experiments. The effluent solution was systematically analysed throughout the experiments. The results of the study indicated that sewage sludge, waste lime and steel slag were the most effective for the AMD treatment as a permeable reactive materials.

Effects of Soil Neutralizing Treatments on Soil Characteristics and Growth of Aster koraiensis in the Acid Soil of Abandoned Metal Mine

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of soil neutralizing treatments on soil characteristics and growth of Aster koraiensis in the acid soil of abandoned metal mine for selection of proper neutralizer. The most effective neutralizers were acid mine drainage sludge, waste lime + oyster and compost. Those neutralizing treatments showed promoting growth of Aster koraiensis. According to this study, it is applicable of acid mine drainage sludge, waste lime + oyster and compost to neutralize acid soil for rehabilitation in abandoned metal mine. However, follow-up study is necessary to calculate proper ratio of each neutralizer.

The applicability of Freundlich's isotherm model for the leaching of solidified hazardous waste using cementitious binders

  • A laboratory study was conducted to investigate the immobilization of the laboratory waste sludge, mainly from chemical oxygen demand (COD) waste, using cementitious binders. The binders were: Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), and lime-Rice Husk Ash(RHA) cement. The economic evaluation was done for three different kinds of cementitious binders, namely, OPC, Portalnd Rice Husk Ash Cement (PRHAC) which contained rice husk ash 50 percent by dry weight, and lime-RHA cement. The result showed that lime-RHA cement was the cheapest. The applicability of Freundlich's desorption isotherm was studied to assess the teachability of sludges. The teachability of cement mortars was found to follow the desorption isotherms. Therefore, it was concluded that based on this test, the leachate concentrations of the solidified heavy metals could be predicted, approximately by the Freundlich's isotherm desorption modeling.
