Glass Property Models, Constraints, and Formulation Approaches for Vitrification of High-Level Nuclear Wastes at the US Hanford Site

  • Current plans for legacy nuclear wastes stored in underground tanks at the U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford Site in Washington are that they will be separated into high-level waste and low-activity waste fractions that will be vitrified separately. Formulating optimized glass compositions that maximize the waste loading in glass is critical for successful and economical treatment and immobilization of these nuclear wastes. Glass property-composition models have been developed and applied to formulate glass compositions for various objectives for the past several decades. Property models with associated uncertainties combined with composition and property constraints have been used to develop preliminary glass formulation algorithms designed for vitrification process control and waste-form qualification at the planned waste vitrification plant. This paper provides an overview of the current status of glass property-composition models, constraints applicable to Hanford waste vitrification, and glass formulation approaches that have been developed for vitrification of hazardous and highly radioactive wastes stored at the Hanford Site.

  • 현재 국내에서 개발 중인 사용후 핵연료의 금속전환공정에서 발생이 예상되는 LiCl 염폐기물을 제올라이트로 고정화한 후 최종 고화체를 만드는 기술을 개발 중에 있다. 여러 혼합조건에 대해 고정화 생성물의 결정을 분석한 결과 모든 혼합조건에서 제올라이트 A형이 제올라이트 Li-A으로 전이되었으며, 일부 혼합조건에서는 Minor phase로 소달라이트 형도 발견되었다. 자유염 발생이 최소가 되는 혼합조건은 Cs, Sr 핵종이 포함된 LiCl 제올라이트 비가 1.0인 조건이었다.

  • We fabricated three $AgI-Ag_2O-B_2O_3$ glasses with different compositions. As a result, two specimens appeared in amorphous phases and one in a crystalline phase. The prepared glasses in this study are considered as one candidate of immobilizing matrices for $^{129}I$.

  • 한국원자력연구소에서 약 4,500드럼 규모의 토양폐기물을 임시로 보관하고 있다. 이를 안전하게 처리하기 위한 고화기술 개발이 필요함에 따라 시멘트와 폴리머를 선정하여 시험을 수행하였다. 이를 위해 토양폐기물에 시멘트와 폴리머를 적절히 혼합하여 고화시편을 제조하였으며, 저장에 따른 처분기준 만족여부를 평가하기 위하여 압축강도시험과 침출시험을 수행하였다. 폐기물함량이 40%인 시멘트고화체와 65%인 폴리머고화체의 압축강도가 약 5,300psi로서 유사하였으며, 침출지수는 11 이상으로서 모든 시편에서 기준치를 만족하였다. 고화과정의 균질한 혼합여부와 시편의 다짐상태가 고화체의 건전성에 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 감용효과는 폴리머고화체가 시멘트고화체에 비해 20% 정도 우수한 것으로 평가되었다.

The applicability of Freundlich's isotherm model for the leaching of solidified hazardous waste using cementitious binders

  • A laboratory study was conducted to investigate the immobilization of the laboratory waste sludge, mainly from chemical oxygen demand (COD) waste, using cementitious binders. The binders were: Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), and lime-Rice Husk Ash(RHA) cement. The economic evaluation was done for three different kinds of cementitious binders, namely, OPC, Portalnd Rice Husk Ash Cement (PRHAC) which contained rice husk ash 50 percent by dry weight, and lime-RHA cement. The result showed that lime-RHA cement was the cheapest. The applicability of Freundlich's desorption isotherm was studied to assess the teachability of sludges. The teachability of cement mortars was found to follow the desorption isotherms. Therefore, it was concluded that based on this test, the leachate concentrations of the solidified heavy metals could be predicted, approximately by the Freundlich's isotherm desorption modeling.

  • The study is aimed to assess the usefulness of the mixture design for spent resin immobilization in cement. Although a considerable amount of research has been carried out to determine the limits for the composition of an acceptable resin-cement mixture, no efficient experimental strategy exists that explores the full properties of waste form against composition relationship. In order to gain an overall view, this report introduces the method of mixture design and mixture analysis, and describes the design of experiment of the 5-component mixture with the constraint conditions. The mathematic models of 28-day compressive strength varying with the ingredients are fitted, and the main effect and interaction effect of two ingredients are identified quantitatively along with the graphical interpretation using the response trace plot and contour plots.
