Design of air-cooled waste heat removal system with string type direct contact heat exchanger and investigation of oil film instability

  • A new air-cooled waste heat removal system with a direct contact heat exchanger was designed for SMRs requiring 200 MW of waste heat removal. Conventional air-cooled systems use fin structure causing high thermal resistance; therefore, a large cooling tower is required. The new design replaces the fin structure with a vertical string type direct contact heat exchanger which has the most effective performance among tested heat exchangers in a previous study. The design results showed that the new system requires a cooling tower 50% smaller than that of the conventional system. However, droplet formation on a falling film along a string caused by Rayleigh-Plateau instability decreases heat removal performance of the new system. Analysis of Rayleigh-Plateau instability considering drag force on the falling film surface was developed. The analysis results showed that the instability can be prevented by providing thick string. The instability is prevented when the string radius exceeds the capillary length of liquid by a factor of 0.257 under stagnant air and 0.260 under 5 m/s air velocity.

  • This study investigated natural convection flow behavior in airflow path designed in concrete dry storage cask to remove the decay heat from spent nuclear fuels. Using FLUENT 16.1 code, thermal analysis for natural convection was carried out for three dimensional, 1/4 symmetry model under the normal condition that inlet ducts are 100% open. The maximum temperatures on other components except the fuel regions were satisfied with allowable values suggested in nuclear regulation-1536. From velocity and temperature distributions along the flow direction, the flow behavior in horizontal duct of air inlet and outlet duct, annular flow-path and bent pipe was delineated in detail. Theses results will be used as the theoretical background for the composing of airflow path for the designing of passive heat removal system by understanding the flow phenomena in airflow path.

  • Exhaust gas containing wood tar of high concentration is discharged from charcoal production kilns. The large amount of emissions are often found by operational failure. The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of an integrated treatment system in treating charcoal production exhaust. The system, which combined a tar collection device and a post-combustion unit, was proposed to remove moisture, wood tar, particulate matter, and other gas-phase pollutants (CO, $CH_4$, total hydrogen carbons) from exhaust gases. Heat recovery units were also applied in the system to utilize waste heat.

  • As the global warming becomes a serious environmental problem, studies of reducing $CO_2$ emission in power generation area are in progress all over the world. One of the carbon capture and storage(CCS) technologies is known as oxy-fuel combustion power generation system. In the oxy-fuel combustion system, the exhaust gas is mainly composed of $CO_2$ and $H_2O$. Thus, high-purity $CO_2$ can be obtained after a proper $H_2O$ removal process. In this paper, an oxy-fuel combustion cycle that recovers the waste heat of a high-temperature fuel cell is analyzed thermodynamically. Variations of characteristics of $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ mixture which is extracted from the condenser and power consumption required to obtain highly-pure $CO_2$ gas were examined according to the variation of the condensing pressure. The influence of the number of compression stages on the power consumption of the $CO_2$ capture process was analyzed, and the overall system performance was also investigated.

중.소형 폐기물 소각시설에서 배출되는 수은, 납, 비소, 셀렌 배출특성 (A Characteristics of Hg, Pb, As and Se Emitted from Small and Medium Size Waste Incinerator Stacks)

  • 본 논문은 중소형 규모의 도시고형 폐기물소각시설 배가스의 수은, 납, 비소, 셀렌과 같은 휘발성중금속의 방출특성을 조사하는데 있다. 대체로, 소형 도시고형 폐기물소각시설에서 배출되는 수은, 납, 비소, 셀렌이 중형 소각시설에서 배출되는 것 보다 높게 나타났다. 이는 중형소각시설에 비하여 소형소각시설의 빈약한 대기오염제어장치의 가동과 높은 배가스 온도에 기인하는 것으로 판단된다. 중소형 소각시설의 배가스 온도는 2개의 온도그룹으로 나누어지는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 첫 번째 온도그룹은 대략 $100^{\circ}C$이고, 두 번째 온도그룹은 $400{\sim}700^{\circ}C$ 정도였다. 2번째 그룹에서의 배가스 중 수은, 납, 비소, 셀렌은 각각 $70.43\;{\mu}g/Sm^3$, $0.94\;{\mu}g/Sm^3$, $9.83\;{\mu}g/Sm^3$, $5.05\;{\mu}g/Sm^3$였다. 첫 번째 온도그룹에서 배가스의 수은, 납, 비소 셀렌은 두 번째 온도그룹의 것보다 낮은 특징을 가지고 있다. 한편, 중형소각시설에서의 수은제거효율은 $55.16{\sim}95.89%$로 나타났다. 이러한 수은의 감소는 폐열보일러의 온도저감이 기여를 하고 있었다. 상기 결과로, 중소형 소각시설에서 휘발성 중금속 제어에 중요한 역할을 하는 것은 배가스의 온도가 큰 역할을 한다. 따라서, 휘발성 중금속의 제거효율을 개선하기 위해서는, 냉각시스템의 온도가 제어되고 대기오염제어장치가 잘 운영되어야 한다.

  • A commercial-scale RDF boiler that its burning capacity is 400 kg-RDF/hr and steam production capacity is 2 ton/hr. It has a chain type stoker and waste heat recovery system. Heat exchanger is vertical water-pipe so that soot blowing and removal is convenient during operation. Dry scrubber, bag filter and activated carbon tower have been installed for the reduction of air pollutant gases and dust. Analysing data of pollutants from stack such as $SO_x$. $NO_x$ and dioxin shows so good results that the boiler system could comply the regulated emission limits.

고준위폐기물 처분터널 내 효율적인 환기시스템에 관한 고찰 (Study on the effective ventilation system in high-level waste disposal tunnel)

  • 국내 에너지의 장기적인 수요상황을 볼 때 원자력 발전의 비중이 확대되는 것은 불가피 하므로 환경 친화적인 사용 후 핵연료의 관리 및 고준위 폐기물의 처분방안의 마련은 원자력의 개발만큼이나 중요하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 방사성 폐기물의 효율적인 관리와 저장 및 열제거를 위하여 최적 환기시스템을 적용한 처분장 설계를 목적으로 여러 환기시스템 설계안을 비교 분석하였다. 분석결과, 8가지 중 case 4(병렬회로)와 case 6(혼합 Diagonal 회로)의 환기효율이 우수한 결과를 나타냈으며, 이와 같은 연구를 통해 환경 친화적인 처분장의 건설이 가능할 것이다.

Flow Characteristics Analysis for the Chemical Decontamination of the Kori-1 Nuclear Power Plant

  • Chemical decontamination of primary systems in a nuclear power plant (NPP) prior to commencing the main decommissioning activities is required to reduce radiation exposure during its process. The entire process is repeated until the desired decontamination factor is obtained. To achieve improved decontamination factors over a shorter time with fewer cycles, the appropriate flow characteristics are required. In addition, to prepare an operating procedure that is adaptable to various conditions and situations, the transient analysis results would be required for operator action and system impact assessment. In this study, the flow characteristics in the steady-state and transient conditions for the chemical decontamination operations of the Kori-1 NPP were analyzed and compared via the MARS-KS code simulation. Loss of residual heat removal (RHR) and steam generator tube rupture (SGTR) simulations were conducted for the postulated abnormal events. Loss of RHR results showed the reactor coolant system (RCS) temperature increase, which can damage the reactor coolant pump (RCP)s by its cavitation. The SGTR results indicated a void formation in the RCS interior by the decrease in pressurizer (PZR) pressure, which can cause surface exposure and tripping of the RCPs unless proper actions are taken before the required pressure limit is achieved.

막 분리 공정을 이용한 1차 계통 실리카 제거에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Silica Removal in Primary System using the Membrane Process)

  • 원전 1차 계통내에 실리카는 알카리 토금속(Ca, Mg, Al 등)과 결합하여 원전 연료 피복재에 열전달을 방해하는 규석층(Zeolite)를 형성한다. 이렇게 형성된 규석층은 원전 피복재 손상의 원인이 된다. 이러한 원전 1차 계통내 실리카의 문제점들은 EPRI 보고서 등에 그 문제점이 꾸준히 제기되어 왔으며 이러한 문제점들을 해결하기 위하여 막분리 공정을 이용하고자 하였다. 먼저 실험실 규모의 실험을 통해 NF막의 실리카 제거율이 약 $60\;{\sim}\;70\%$, Boron 제거율이 약 $10\;{\sim}\;20\%$로 그 적용 가능성을 확인하였으며, FilmTec과 Osmonics 사 NF막 제품 4종에 대하여 현장 실험을 수행하였다. 현장 사용후연료 저장 붕산수 400L를 시료로 한 실험에서 운전압력 $10kg_{f}/cm^2$에서 FilmTec 사의 NF90-2540이 실리카 제거율이 약 $98\%$, Boron 제거율이 약 $43\%$로 확인되었으며 또한 NF270-2540이 실리카 제거율이 약 $38\%$, Boron 제거율이 약 $3.5\%$로 확인되었다. 이를 바탕으로 장기운전 특성 실험 등의 추가적인 연구를 통해 최적의 실리카 제거를 위한 막 분리공정을 설계 할 예정이다.
