  • Sedimentation characteristics SS, $BOD_5$ and removal efficiency of waste water in the tissue paper mill using milk carton were examined. Optimum dosage of coagulant, rapid mixing time and slow mixing time were determined by turbidity, SS and S-$BOD_5$ and then equation for treatment efficiency was suggested. For the coagulant, polyaluminium chloride(PAC) are compared with a little better efficiency compare to the aluminium sulfate.

  • An acetaldehyde, a representative food waste odor, was decomposed using a hybrid system comprised of a non-thermal plasma and catalyst at an ambient temperature under high humidity. A five wt.% Mn was impregnated on two differently structured microporous zeolites, namely Beta and ZSM-5, with a different molar ratio of SiO2/Al2O3. Under high humidity conditions, the acetaldehyde degradation was higher in zeolites with the high ratio of SiO2/Al2O3. Among studied catalysts, a five wt.% Mn/Beta (SiO2/Al2O3 = 300) showed the highest acetaldehyde removal activity owing to its high hydrophobicity and reducibility. During long term stability test using the same catalyst for 110 hours, the acetaldehyde removal activity was relatively well-maintained.

  • A physicochemical process called Ultra Rapid Coagulation(URC) can dramatically remove organics, metals, and phosphates in wastewater by adding weighted coagulation additive(WCA) and recycling sludge into the coagulation basin to increase the growth rate and adsorption ability of floc. Also this process can improve floc settling rate than conventional coagulation process and reduce the pollutants loaded into the receiving water for securing water source. It was evaluated that WCA and sludge added have effects on the removal efficiency and estimated the possibilities of reusing the effluent from this process.

  • Lab-scale biofilter was evaluated for the removal of styrene from a waste gas stream. Compost and polyurethane form were used as packing material (50 : 50) and activated sludge from a wastewater treatment plant was innoculated initially. Nitrogen limitation was observed during the biofilter operation and nitrogen source should be properly supplemented. When ammonium sulfate is used as N-source. 200mg carbon was removed for each mg of nitrogen. The effects of the volumetric styrene loading on the styrene elimination capacity (EC) and the removal efficiency (RE) was also tested. The results showed $EC_{max}$ was 4.8kg $C/m^3{\cdot}day$ and above RE 95% was achieved at EBRT 1min.

  • Colored compounds adsorption from the textile dyeing effluents on activated carbons produced from various indigenous vegetable sources by zinc chloride activation is studied. The most important parameters in chemical activation were found to be the chemical ratio of $ZnCl_2$ to feed (3:1), carbonization temperature (460-470 $^{\circ}C$) and time of activation (75 min). The absorbance at 511 nm (red effluent) and 615 nm (blue effluent) are used for estimation of color. It is established that at optimum temperature ($50^{\circ}C$), time of contact (30-40 min) and adsorbent loading (2 g/L), activated carbons developed from rain tree (Samanea saman) saw dust and blackberry (Randia formosa) tree saw dust showed great capability to remove color materials from the effluents. It is observed that adsorption of reactive dyes by all types of activated carbons is more than that of disperse dyes. It is explained that because of its acidic nature the activated carbon can adsorb better reactive dye particles containing large number of nitrogen sites and $-SO_3Na$ group in their structure. The use of activated carbons from the indigenous biomass would be economical, because saw dusts are readily available waste worldwide.

  • Recently, sanitary landfill was one of the most widely used for disposal of waste in Korea. With increasing of use and public awareness of this method for disposal. there is an increased concern with respect to the pollution potential by the landfill leachate. Especially, an aged landfill leachate contained relatively large amount of the nonbiodegradable substances which could not be removed by biological treatment processes. So, this study was conducted to the removal of nonbiodegradable substances, such as Humic acid and Fulvic acid with the electrolysis. In this study, electrode materials, electrolyte concentration, electrode distance, current density, and pH value were found to have significant effect on both pollutant removal efficiency and current efficiency in electrochemical oxidation process.

  • An eco-friendly water purifier was developed using natural minerals, plants, and sludge from water purification plants. A wastewater complex treatment system using this water purification agent was developed. The wastewater complex treatment system goes through the process of inflow of contaminated water, input of water purification agent, operation of a pressurized flotation device, sludge flotation, sludge collection and treatment water discharge. This device was applied to the removal of green algae in livestock desorption liquid, broiler washing water, factory wastewater, sewage treatment plant and pond to obtain excellent removal rate. The use of natural water purification agents for organic waste purification has not been investigated.

  • Papermaking reconstituted tobacco is an important strategy for recycling the waste tobacco residues. To indentify the influences of the inorganic components on harmful components delivery in cigarette smoke, a self-made electrodialysis stack was assembled to desalt the tobacco extract. The influences of the applied current and extract content on the removal rate of the inorganic ions were investigated. Results indicated that the applied current was a dominant impact on the desalination performance. High currents lower than the limiting current density could accelerate the desalting efficiency but cause higher energy consumption. A current of 2 A, or current density of ${\sim}11mA{\cdot}cm^{-2}$, was an optimal choice by considering both the energy consumption and desalting efficiency. A 20% tobacco extract was an appropriate content for the electrodialysis process. More than 90% of inorganic ions could be removed under the optimum condition. The preliminary result indicated that removal of inorganic components was beneficial to decrease the harmful component delivery in cigarette smoke. Naturally, ED is an environmentally friendly and high-effective technology for desalting the tobacco extract.

  • The two kinds of pellet-type red-mud adsorbents (bead-type, crushed-type) were from red mud, which is generated as a by-product during the production of aluminum hydroxide from bauxite ore. The adsorption experiments of Pb^{2+} ion in the aqueous solution by these red-mud adsorbents were studied with a continuous adsorption ccolumn. As a result, the crushed-type adsorbent shows better performance in adsorption of Pb^{2+} than the bead-type adsorbent between the two types of the pellet-type adsorbents. The continusous adsorption experiment shows that the pellet-type adsorbents made from red mud have good performance for removal of Pd^{2+}. The breakthrough curves of the red-mud adsorbents were compared with that of activated carbon.

  • The regeneration of the iron powders in the treatment of $FeCl_3$ etching solution containing nickel by ball-mill and ultrasonic treatments has been studied. When the unreacted iron powders were treated twice, the removal efficiency of nickel was 94.0% for the ball-mill treatment and 82.1% for the ultrasonic treatment. But the removal efficiency of nickel was 40.0% for the untreated iron powders. As the treatment time was increased, the particle size of iron powders was decreased for ball-mill treatment and almost not changed for ultrasonic treatment.
