In order to prospect current recycling status in Korea, legislative system and policies relating to recycling, wastes generation and recycling rate were reviewed. Approximately 260,400 ton/day of wastes was generated in 2001. 48,400 ton/day of household waste and 212,000 ton/day of industrial waste. During the last ten years, waste management laws such as waste disposal law, recycling law and environment friendly industry law were prepared. In this article, concerning over waste generation and recycling, recycling law, Extended Producer Responsibility System and the problems and technological developments associated with recycling were summarized.
In order to prospect current recycling status in Korea, wastes generation and recycling rate were reviewed. Approximately 188,600 ton/day of wastes was generated in 1998; 44,600 ton/day of domestic waste and 144,000 ton/day of industrial waste. During the last five years, waste management laws such as recycling law and environment friendly industry law were prepared. In this article, concerning over waste generation and recycling, the problems and technological developments associated with recycling were summarized.

In order to establish active and effective recycling plans on construction wastes, the study seeks to built unit generation data per construction waste types on each sector, prepare units data on urban construction waste generation and serve as meaningful data on the establishment of policies on construction waste recycling targeting urban regions. The significance of the study is on the establishment of construction waste recycling plan prior to generation, not as complementary measures on construction waste generated.
Since the Framework Act on Resource Circulation was enacted in 2018, the government should establish a National Resource Circulation Master Plan every 10 years, which defines mid- to long-term policy goals and directions on the efficient use of resources, prevention of waste generation and recycling of waste. In addition, we must set mid- to long-term and stepwise targets for the final disposal rate, recycling rate (based on sorted recyclable materials and recycled products), and energy recovery rate of wastes, and relevant measures should be taken to achieve these targets. However, the current industrial waste (IW) statistics have limitations in setting these targets because the final disposal rate and recycling rate are calculated as the ratio of the recycling facility input to the IW generation. In this study, the material flow from the collection stage to the final disposal of industrial waste was analyzed based on the generation of 2016, and the actual recycling amount, actual incineration amount, final disposal amount and their rates were calculated. The effect on the recycling, incineration and final disposal rates was examined by changing the treatment method of nonhazardous wastes from the factory and construction and demolition wastes, which were put in landfills in 2016. In addition, the variation of the waste treatment charge was investigated according to the change of treatment methods. The results of this study are expected to be effectively used to establish the National Resource Circulation Master Plan and industrial waste management policy in the future in South Korea.
The status of waste generation and recycling in 32 countries in the European Union (EU), Japan, and the United States was investigated and summarized to encourage overseas market expansion for domestic urban mining industries. Among the 32 EU countries, Germany has the highest amount of material consumption and generates the largest quantity of waste. Minerals such as mine and soil wastes constitute the largest type of waste in the EU. With respect to waste treatment techniques, landfill and recycling are applied to 39% and 38% of the waste, respectively, implying the necessity to promote recycling. Japan's total waste generation declined recently to less than 400 million tons. The largest amount of waste is generated by the manufacturing industries. The proportion of total recycled waste is estimated to be slightly over 50%, but the proportions are greater than 90% for metal scrap and 60% for waste plastics. The amount of waste produced in the United States recently exceeded 265 million tons; 52.1% of the waste is landfilled, while only 25.1% is recycled. Therefore, the recycling industry has to be developed further.
Waste electrical and electronic equipment(WEEE or E-waste) is one of the fastest growing waste stream in Korea. The proper management of such equipment has become of major concern for solid waste professionals because of the large growth of the waste stream and the presence of a myriad of toxic materials with in it. In this paper in order to review the recycling system and recycling industries of the E-waste in Korea, the main frame concerning recycling of "Act on the Resources Recycling of Waste Electrical Electronic Equipment(WEEE) and End-of-life vehicles", recycling system, current recycling status, estimation of the E-waste generation, material flow of the E-waste, economics of PCB and recycling industries of the E-waste were surveyed.
The municipal solid waste (MSW) management system in one of the Class II Indian cities i.e. Rishikesh was studied and analysed to identify the key issues in solid waste management in the city. A total of 329 solid waste samples from 47 households were collected to characterize the household solid waste (HSW). The average (HSW) generation rate was 0.26 kg/c/d and it was composed of organic waste (57.3%), plastics (14%), paper (10.9%), and glass and ceramic (1.3%) and other materials (16.5%). There was an inverse relationship between household waste generation rate and family size (p < 0.05). The MSW management system practiced in Rishikesh is unsound. There is no waste segregation at source, no provisions of composting and no recycling by formal sector. The collection and transportation of waste is inadequate and inappropriate. Collected waste is dumped in open dumping site without scientific management. Following are some recommendations for developing a sustainable solid waste management system in Rishikesh city: (1) sensitize people for segregation at source; (2) promote reduction, reuse and recycling of wastes; (3) promote community based composting; (4) provision for 100% door to door collection and; (5) formalize the informal sectors such as rag pickers and recycling industries.

Generation and recycling potential of organic waste in Korea were estimated. Status of organic waste composting and compost utilization also were surveyed to promote the recycling of organic waste. From 1994 to 1997, generation of garbage decreased gradually while recycling rate increased due to positive governmental strategy. During the same period, livestock waste increased 11.2%. Municipal wastewater sludge was generated 3,500 ton/day which was 0.03% of wastewater treated in 1996. The energy Potential of industrial organic waste was estimated to 288 million TOE which was 1.75% of the nationwide first energy consumption in 1996. Recycling of industrial sludge was low to 31%, while recycling of animal waste, plant scraps, and wasted paper were relatively high over 50%. Industrial sludge should be recycled more as it was the most part of industrial organic waste. Conventional composting materials were mainly livestock waste, food processing waste, fishery waste, sawdust, and nightsoil. Garbage and sludge have been composted recently. 420,000 tons of compost in 1996 were produced by 288 makers, the most of which were utilized in agriculture. It was suggested that separated collection, compost standard, and quality management should be provided to promote the composting of organic waste.

The generation of construction waste has increased continuously in the recent years, becoming an important social issue. In this paper, the generation and treatment of construction waste in Korea was reviewed and a comparative analysis was performed between Korea and developed countries to suggest some efficient recycling strategies. The generation of construction waste has increased 4 times from 10 million ton/yr in 1996 to 40.3 million ton/yr in 2002. Of the construction waste generated in 2002, concrete debris waste occupied 60.4%. Approximately 14.5% of the construction waste is landfilled, 2,0% incinerated and 83.4% recycled, then the recycling rate might be relatively high. However, there is room for increasing landfill diversion. It is somewhat important to strenghten incentives for the outstanding recycling business. It is also needed to improve the recycled aggregate quality standard and impurity content standard. It is desirable to toughen the facility standard for the recycling aggregate business and the quality standard for the intermediate treatment business. Also, market for the intermediate product of the recycled aggregate should be activated. Finally, more recycling-oriented regulations governing the construction waste has to be developed with the efficient public education program.
Large scale generation of plastic waste has generated considerable interest it seeking innovative solutions to waste recycling and reuse. Plastic solid waste(PSW) treatment and recycling processes could be allocated to four major categories, re-extrusion(primary), mechanical recycling(secondary), chemical recycling(tertiary) and energy recovery(quaternary). This review considers the various aspects of the PSW recycling such as recycling methods of PSW, special problems about some proposed process, separation techniques, and recycling of mixed PSW.
