The study aims to identify the generation and treatment of fishery by-products in Korea and suggests future directions and strategies for their eco-friendly utilization and industrialization. First, the study focuses on the identification of the generation and their treatment in Korea since merely few study were conducted and they did not provide enough information regarding the overall generation and treatment at the national level. According to the estimation, Korea generates 800 thousand to 1,200 thousand tones of fishery by-product every year. The fishery by-products generated at large seafood markets and processing facilities are used or processed as fish meal and feed, but those generated from households and small seafood restaurants are currently treated as food waste. In addition, inadequately treated fishery by-products cause various problems such as spoiling urban landscape, creating odor and incubating pest. After identifying the generation and treatment of fishery by-products, the study suggests directions for the formulation of infrastructure for transition into resource circulation society, minimization of dumped waste and their eco-friendly recycling as resources, diversification of recycled goods and development into a high-value added industry. Finally, the study suggests detailed strategies for the directions such as establishment of legal and institutional foundation, separation of fishery by-products from wastes, development of technology tailored for commercialization, introduction of pilot projects for industrialization and cultivation of social enterprises.
LHR(Landfill Hazard Ranking Model) was developed for assessing the relative hazard of landfills by using the method of value-structured approach. LHR consists of combining a multiattribute decision-making method with a qualitative risk assessment approach. A pairwise comparision method was applied to determine weights of landfill factors related. To prove the validity of weights allocation of landfill hazard evaluation factors, sensitivity analysis was applied. Firstly, the impact on landfill hazard score according to variations of weights of landfill hazard factors was analyzed. Secondly, the impact on landfill hazard score according to conditions change of landfill hazard factors was analyzed. As a result of sensitivity analysis, LHR composite scores are largely influenced by some factors following sequential order such as waste volume, proximity to sensitive environments, containment facilities, distance from drinking water supplies, and waste toxicity. The relative order of landfill hazard evaluated by LHR is not influenced by the weights change of individual factors. Therefore, LHR seems to be a credible model to determine priorities of landfill remediation based on the vulnerability of water resources.

To help idntify the potential sources of volatile organic sulfur compounds within the continental environment, we have conducted preliminary measurements of dimethylsulfide(DMS) during field campains held from three reference sites. These sampling sites were located within a waste reclamation facility in Won Ju City, Kang Won Province. The results of our measurements showed that DMS levels spanned over 1 to 55 pptv with a mean and 1 standard deviation(1SD) of 12 and 18 pptv(N=13). In a comparison of the data derived from the strongest sources, i.e., oceanic environment, the DMS levels in thre reclamation facility were jpronouncingly low with high day-to-night concentration ratios. It was noted that a significant difference in DMS levels between daytime and nighttime periods was mainly driven by a few exceptional data measured during daytime. Despite limitations of our measurement data in deriving meaningful interpretations of spatiotemporal distributions of DMS in inland facilities, the existence of extraordinary trends, i.e., especially "lower-than-expectedL" DMS values, can be explained in terms of mixed effects of several factors. Most importantly, we can infer that the rates of DMS production and of its destruction in the study site are at or near steady-state condition. Another possibility is that DMS is not adequate enough to explain the generally malordorous environment of reclamation sites, of particular in Won Ju area.n Ju area.

Following rapid industrial development and urbanization in Korea, there is a need for the Government to implement effective control of pollution and to undertake specific schemes in areas where pollution of the environment is severe. In response to this need, Government of Korea prepare Han River Basin Environmental Master Plan Project for water, air, solid waste to cover environmental protection of the Han River Basin. The Project area is approximately 27,000 sq. Km extending over Seoul, Kyunggi, Kwangwon, Chungbuk Province. The total population of Master Plan Project area is approximately 11.6 million, or one-third of the total population of Korea. There are about 8,000 industries, including those located in 16 industrial complexes, in the project area. The scope of work and terms of reference are the following: (1) A Summary of existing land use and forecasts for changes in land use by the year 2,000. (2) Emission inventories for air, waste water, and solid wastes. (3) Forecasts of future population growth patterns and pollution loadings. (4) Identification of specific projects needs to reduce pollution levels and satisfy the environmental quality standards. (5) A Program of enforcement to include (i) self monitoring, and (ii) governmental inspections and surveillance. (6) A program for quality improvement and quality assurance of environmental measurements. (7) Reports summarizing all data collected analyzed during the study. (8) Conceptual design and feasibility studies, including cost estimates, for needed pollution control projects. (9) A financial plan for future detailed design and construction of public facilities, for financial incentives to industry, and for user charges for industrial use of public treatment of disposal works.

The need for developing sustainable solutions for managing the animal waste is vital for the future of the animal industry in North Carolina. As part of that process, the North Carolina Attorney General has concluded that the public interest will be served by the development and implementation of environmentally superior swine waste management technologies appropriate to each category of hog farms. To facilitate in the development, testing, and evaluation of potential technologies it is necessary that all aspects of environmental issues (air, water, soil, odor and odorants, and disease-transmitting vectors and airborne pathogens) be addressed as Part of a comprehensive strategy, Program OPEN (Odor, Pathogens, and Emissions of Nitrogen) Is comprehensively addressing these issues.
Modern livestock production facilities face both challenges and opportunities with respect to sustainable manure management practices. Nutrient recycling is constrained by the size of modern livestock operations, the low nutrient density of liquid manures, and the spatial and temporal variability of manure nutrient concentrations. These constraints can and must be addressed or farmers will be increasingly drawn to nutrient wasting strategies such as anaerobic lagoons, wetlands, and other systems designed to treat and discharge nutrients to the environment. Intentional discharge of nutrients is difficult to justify in a sustainable agricultural production system, since replacing those nutrients through chemical fertilization requires considerable expenditure of energy. In contrast, there are several currently viable technologies which provide the homogenization and stabilization needed to successfully compete against chemical fertilizers, including composting, pelletization, and anaerobic digestion. Some of these technologies, particularly anaerobic digestion and composting, also open up increased opportunities to market the energy and nutrients in manure to non-agricultural uses. Future advances in biotechnology are likely to demonstrate additional options to transform manure into fuels, chemicals, and other non-agricultural products.

A new approach has been adopted to remove the hot particulates from nuclear facilities, KAERI, South Korea, by using the new compact cyclone train, made of steel ness steel, with optional vortex finder length. Flow rate results showed a dramatic change in removal efficiency, performance was changed with the change of exit tube length. The 15 m/s flow rate was found suitable one for new equipment with the 49 mm optimum exit tube length for 76 mm cyclone body diameter. Results shows the removal efficiency for $1\;{\mu}m$ was more than $65\%$ and for $10\;{\mu}m$ was seen ${\~}97\%$. Over 15 m/s flow rate, was not shown much different in removal efficiency. The removal efficiency increased with the flow rate, and pressure drop. Cut size diameter decrease with the inlet flow rate. Cut size diameter found lowest with 49 mm exit tube length and 15 m/s flow rate. For filters the performance decreased with the inlet velocity increased.

In order to evaluate the potential radiological risks for the reuse of the site after decommissioning of nuclear facilities, a mathematical model was developed and materialized into the Microsoft $Excel{\circledR}$ spreadsheets frame. A set of input parameter values was proposed, which is useful in the preliminary risk screening step before the detailed evaluation with the site-specific data. It appeared that the screening levels calculated by the present model was agreed with the derived concentration guideline limits resulted from RESRAD Ver.6.2 and the German dose criteria for releasing a nuclear site from regulatory control.

The dyeing sludge can be weakened by inflow of rainfall or absorption of moisture after it is buried in a waste landfill. This study tested the dyeing sludge and earth/sand mixture to check the problem when the dehydrated dyeing sludge is buried in a waste landfill. When the dyeing sludge was left idle with high water content inside a landfill with poor draining for a long period, the water permeability decreased to around 3/100 level and the compressibility increased by 1.4 times compared to the dyeing sludge at a dyeing factory. The study result indicated that it was important to reduce the water content inside the landfill for stability. Also, the facilities to secure the drainage path and eliminate leachate were needed.
