  • Biofiltration has been identified as a promising method of odor, VOCs and air toxic removal from waste gas streams because of low capital and operating cost, low energy requirements and an absence of residual products requiring further treatment of disposal. Because biofiltration units are microbial systems in-corporationg microorganisms grown on a porous solid media like compost, peat, soil and mixtures of these materials, there is a need to study of the adsorptive behavior of these supports. The purpose of this study was to investigate the major parameters of adsorptive process. We adsorbed VOCs onto peats and bark, and examined the correlations between the interphase mass transfer coefficients and transfer units, at different stream flow rates, VOCs inlet concentrations and bed lengths.

  • Resins using recycled PET offer the possibility of a lower source cost of materials for making useful polymer concrete products. The purposed of this paper is to form a part of reducing the damage of sulfuric acid, through investigating recycled PET polymer concrete, . immersed at sulfuric acid solution for 84 days. Recycled PET PC is excellent chemical resistance, resulting in the role of unsaturated polyester resin which consists of polymer chain structure accomplishes bond of aggregates and filler strongly. Also, Recycled PET PC, used fly-ash as filler, is stronger resistance of sulfuric acid corrosion than $CaCO_3$, because it is composed of $SiO_2$ and very strong glassy crystal structure. Therefore, Recycled PET PC, used fly-ash as filler, is available under corrosion circumstances like sewer pipe or waste disposal plant.

  • Nuclear energy sources are indispensable in cost effectively achieving carbon neutral economy, where public opinion is critical to adoption as the consequences of nuclear accident can be catastrophic. In this context, discussion on spent nuclear fuel is a prerequisite to expanding nuclear energy, as it leads to the issue of radioactive waste disposal. Given the dearth of study on spent nuclear fuel public acceptance, we use text mining and big data analysis on the news article and public comments data on Naver news portal to identify the Korean public opinion on spent nuclear fuel. We identify that the Korean public is more interested in the nuclear energy policy than spent nuclear fuel itself and that the alternative energy sources affect the position towards spent nuclear fuel. We recommend relating spent nuclear fuel issue with nuclear energy policy and environmental issues of alternative energy sources to further promote spent nuclear fuel.

  • Biodiesel is a non-polluting and non-toxic energy source that can replace conventional diesel. However, the higher production cost and raw material scarcity became challenges that obstruct the commercialization of biodiesel production. In the current investigation, fried cooking oil is used for biodiesel production in a hydrodynamic cavitation reactor, thus enhancing raw material availability and helping better waste oil disposal. However, due to the cavitation effect inside the reactor, the hydrodynamic cavitation reactor can give biodiesel yield above 98%. Thus, the use of orifice plates (having a different number of holes for cavitation) in the reactor shows more than 90% biodiesel yield within 10 mins of a time interval. The effects of rising temperature at different molar ratios are also investigated. The five-hole plate achieves the highest yield for a 4.5:1 molar ratio at 65℃. And the similar result is predicted by the response surface methodology model; however, the optimized yield is obtained at 60℃. The investigation will help understand the effect of hydrodynamic cavitation on biodiesel yield at different molar ratios and elevated temperatures.

  • In this study, fundamental properties of high strength concrete containing blast furnace slag are investigated analyzed according to CBS-Dust replacement rate. As the CBS-Dust replacement rate increased, air content, fluidity and strength decreased, but concrete with 5~10 % of CBS-Dust showed excellent compressive strength in its early age. Therefore, 5~10 % substitution of CBS-Dust on high strength concrete containing blast furnace slag will have a positive effect on reducing waste disposal cost and improving the strength.

  • Among the biodegradable liquid waste treatment and disposal methods, ocean dumping is a cost-effective and productive manner considering reuse point of view However, when biodegradable liquid waste is dumped in the ocean, oxygen consumption by the decomposition of organic matter must be considered. The purpose of this study is to determine the maximum allowable concentration and dumping rate in the southern waters of the East Sea based on dissolved oxygen level. Streeter and Phelps' model has been used to determine the maximum allowable concentration. Factors in this model, deoxygenation constants and reaeration coefficients, have been determined by appling oxygen consumption method and closed system model. Deoxygenation constants and reaeration coefficients from surface to each standard depth are $0.24\~0.29/day\;and\;0.03\~0.39/day$ in summer, $0.17\~0.20/day\;and\;0.04\~0.56/day$ in winter, respectively. The allowable organic matter concentration($mgBOD/\iota$) to the dissolved oxy-gen sag value of $5mg/{\iota}$ is represented $17.23\times(H)^{-0.37}$ in summer, and $64.96\times(H)^{-0.52}$ in winter by mixing depth(H, m). Csanady's experiment has been applied to estimate the optimum dumping rate. The optimum dumping rate($R,\;m^3/sec$) can be written as a product of the beam(b, m) and the draft(h, m) of vessel, and biochemical oxygen demand of waste($L_n,\;mg/{\iota}$) $R=275{\times}bh^{0.63}L_n^{-1}$ in summer $=745{\times}bh^{0.48}L_n^{-1}$ in winter. The difference of dumping rate between in summer and winter is due to the oxygen distribution.

  • This study is aimed to review the previous research accomplishments with analysis of problems and to suggest the counter plan for the watershed management and the ongoing research strategy. Phytoremediation provides a cost-effective techniques having a merit of low investment and maintenance cost. It could be one of the best techniques, which is an alternative plan to overcome economical situation and lack of experts in our country. In forest watershed affected by waste water and heavy metal pollutants should be controlled by vegetative remediation system, but the disposal techniques of harvested plant materials should be developed. Also, high degree areas of natural vegetation as a key model to recover the vegetation should be well conserved. It is important to restore forest continuity between upper stream and lower stream basin with the restoration of damaged in forest watershed. It is established to integrated protection system for land use and management plan and to natural environment evaluation methods affected by projects such as erosion control and developments in stream and forest. In addition, I suggest the continuous environmental monitoring system to treat the pollutions concerned.

  • With the development of technology, interest in the implementation of free-form buildings is increasing, and research on producing free-form panels is being conducted accordingly. Since free-form buildings are curved and consist of geometric shapes, there are many problems with the production technology of free-form panels that implement them. Due to the inability to reuse molds, the cost of disposal of construction waste and waste of manpower for assembly increase the construction period and construction cost. To improve these limitations, a 3D printed concrete nozzle for FCP production was developed. However, this technology is not quantitatively extruded according to the shape of the panel, and there is a problem that residues are generated. Therefore, an free-form panel extrusion experiment was conducted to analyze the limitations of existing nozzles and to analyze the requirements for the development of new concrete extrusion nozzles. Existing nozzles were unable to be quantitatively extruded, resulting in errors. Due to the weak pressure of the screw and the inability to adjust the internal pressure, detailed extrusion speed control was impossible, and residue generation in the opening and closing device seemed to be the cause. Therefore, a pump capable of quantitative concrete pressure transfer and a pressure control device for easy extrusion of concrete are required. In addition, it is judged that it is necessary to develop an opening and closing device and an extrusion device that do not generate residues. The results of this study are expected to provide information for FCP production and production and to be a basic study of technologies necessary for the production of free-form building panels.

  • This study examined understanding and attitude of sustainable development(SD) of 38 college students in a nuclear power plant construction after education for sustainable development(ESD) through panel discussion. The results were as follows: First, after lesson 66% of students were expected that SD is possible if scientific technology is developed and a frugal life for the protection of environment is carried out. However, the remaining students regarded SD as an ideal concept, because they thought it is not possible to pursue environmental sustainability and socio-economic development simultaneously. Second, students' opinions in the evaluation of constructing a nuclear power plant in three aspects(environment, society and economy) before and after panel discussion were changed as follows; 1) After panel discussion, the objectors increased to 21% in economic evaluation, while the supporters increased to 11% in environmental evaluation. 2) Students majoring in engineering or natural sciences changed their opinions to agree in environmental evaluation because they considered a nuclear power plant safe and eco-energy. However students majoring in social science/business or liberal arts/arts changed their opinions to disagree in economic evaluation because they considered a nuclear power plant as high-cost energy when assessing danger-accidents cost, public consensus cost, operation and maintenance cost, and waste disposal cost. 3) This change of decision-making in students majoring in social science/business or liberal arts/arts after panel discussion was statistically significant(p<0.05). Implications of panel discussion as a teaching and learning method in ESD are also discussed.

  • In construction of new ships and large steel bridges in Korea, pre-construction primers (PCP), also known as shop primer, are routinely used and retained as an integral part of the protective coating system. Retention of PCP's can significantly reduce building schedule and cost. Retaining PCP through the so-called "sweep blasting" procedure eliminates or minimizes the necessity of a second blast operation, thus shortening overall schedule as well as reducing labor cost and hazardous waste disposal cost. This study evaluates the feasibility of retaining PCP as the part of primer for high performance protective coating systems applied to ships' hull, bottom and ballast tanks. Upon proving that the retention of the PCP is a viable option, the process of coating application can he improved significantly in terms of cost and working schedule of new ships and large steel bridges. Results indicate that use of the PCP via sweeping blasting in conjunction with standard high performance protective coating systems does not degrade the overall performance of the coating systems. At the same time, it is also highly recommended that the secondary surface preparation should consist of grit blasting of weld burnt and other damaged areas to SSPC SP-IO grade (Sa 2.5 Gr.), Near White Blast Cleaning with proper application and attention to detail.
