  • Cotton fabrics were treated with gelatin to improved their dyeability, color strength toward cochineal dye. Gelatin were used as the protein. Gelatin is containing a large number of hydrophilic groups. Pad-dry-cure method was used for the treatment process(10g/L concentration). The scanning electron micrograph showed the gelatin was deposited on the surface of cotton. Pretreated fabrics were mordanted with 10%(owf) alum. Then the fabrics were dyed with cochineal. Compared with original cotton fabric the K/S value with cochineal dyes was significantly improved on gelatin modified cotton. Treating cotton with 10g/L concentration gelatin offered higher cochineal adsorption. The dyeability of pH 4 yielded the highest color strength. In dyebaths of a ratio of ethanol and water such as; 10:0, 9:1, 8:2, 7:3, 6:4, 5:5, 4:6, 3:7, 2:8, 1:9, 0:10, fabrics were dyed. The ratio of ethanol and water had powerful effects on solution polarity. Cochineal dye uptake showed maximum value, when the proportion of ethanol and water was 9:1. Dyeing at increased temperatures and with increased time resulted in higher dye uptake and reddish-purple color(5RP). The washing fastness was 1-2grade, and the fastness to light was 2-3grade.

  • This study investigated the proper dyeing conditions, color fastness and functionality of wool fabrics dyed with Zizania latifolia Turcz. We also tried to improve light fastness through treatment with benzophenone ultraviolet absorber. The dyeing of wool fabrics using Zizania latifolia Turcz was good even without pretreatment or mordanting treatment. Optimal wool fabric dyeing conditions were colorant concentration of 200% (o.w.f.), dyeing temperature of $100^{\circ}C$, dyeing time of 80 minutes and a dye bath pH of 3. Color fastness of dyed wool fabrics to washing, rubbing, perspiration and light was 4-5, 5, 4-4-5 (acidic), 4-5 (alkaline) and 2 respectively. The results after treatment with ultraviolet absorber for improving the fastness of daylight were improved to 3-4 grade. The UV protection rate were increased after dyeing and the deodorization of ammonia gas improved to 98%. Bacterial reduction rate (Staphylococcus aureus) of wool fabrics was excellent at 99.9%. All dye fastness (except for light fastness) was excellent; in addition, the functionality of wool fabrics dyed with Zizania latifolia Turcz also improved. The results are expected to be applied to various fields because they indicate excellent results after treatment with ultraviolet absorber for improving the fastness of daylight.

  • On the purpose of conform the more stringent government regulation for turbid stormwater from construction sites, the feasibility and availability of synthetic fiber placing after the conventional protection barrier were tested in this study. Initially, comparative work on the filtering performance of fiber media and conventional gravel filter was carried out, 27% higher filtration capacity was obtained under the similar operational conditions. The filter efficiency was about 20 to 52% with a varying filter depth of 5 to 15cm, presuming at extreme storm flow conditions (800-1500 m/day of filtration rates). Fiber filter was found to have a similar filtration prosperity as grain media; namely, the separation efficiency is directly and inversely proportional to filter depth and rate, respectively. The effects of filter aid (polyaluminium chloride) on filter performance was also investigated, it greatly affected the turbidity reduction at the dosage of 2 mg/L. At the time of breakthrough, a simple filter washing was carried out, herein, the solid recovery achieved over than 88% and greatly determined by operational parameters. Based on the operational data, the empirical models aimed for predicting filtration efficiency were established, which can effectively determine the required filter depth and filtration area in field.

  • Recently, as the demand for masks increases, the use of filter-replaceable cotton masks is increasing. A filter-replaceable cotton mask is one of the ways to solve the environmental problems of a disposable nonwoven mask because only the filter can be replaced after washing. Cotton fiber products are known to be environmentally friendly, but cotton products dyed with general synthetic dyes are not safe for humans. In this study, to prepare of cotton mask applied with natural dyeing, the optimal dyeing conditions are set when dyeing with gallnut extract. A polychromatic natural dye that changes color by mordant, and the functionalities of gallnut dyeing fabrics are evaluated. The experimental method is dyed the gallnut by temperature and time by concentration to set the optimal conditions. The color fastness rating grade of aluminium potassium sulfate dodecahydrate, copper(ll) sulfate pentahydrate, and iron(ll) chloride tetrahydrate were evaluated after the pre/post mordanting.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the potential of the neutral extract (NE) prepared by treating P. radiata bark with aqueous NaHCO3 solution as a natural dyestuff. Silk and cotton fabrics were dyed at four different NE concentrations, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.0% o.w.b. (on the weight of bath). The fabric to liquid ratio of 1 : 50, dyeing temperature of 90℃, and dyeing time of 90 min were used as the fixed condition. The appropriate NE dyeing concentration of silk and cotton fabrics was 1.5% o.w.b. Colors of the dyed silk and cotton fabrics were brown and light brown, respectively. From colorfastness assessment, both dyed silk and cotton showed good washing and rubbing fastness, but poor light fastness. NE dyed fabrics exhibited excellent ammonia deodorization property and antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Therefore, NE of P. radiata bark could have the potential for use as a functional brown dyestuff.

  • The phase transformation from cellulose I into cellulose II in woods by way of Na-cellulose I was examined by x-ray diffraction analysis. The formation of Na-cellulose I in woods increased with the increase of treating time in alkali solution. When compression wood was treated with 20% NaOH solution at room temperature for 1 day, the x-ray diagram showed only Na-cellulose I. On the other hand, the x-ray diagram of tension wood showed a mixture of cellulose I and Na-cellulose I. Cellulose I of tension wood could not be transformed completely into Na-cellulose I even after 10-day treatment, but was transformed into Na-cellulose I after 30-day treatment. Na-cellulose I of compression and tension woods was converted to the cellulose I pattern and the mixture of cellulose I and cellulose II, respectively, after washing with water and drying at 20℃. Cellulose I regenerated from Na-cellulose I in wood could not be converted to cellulose II by delignification. Thus, it revealed that the delignification of the alkali-treated wood did not affect their cellulose structures. From the results, therefore, it can be concluded that lignin in woods prevents the formation of the stable Na-cellulose I and the conversion from cellulose I to cellulose II. This means that the conversion of chain polarity of wood cellulose hardly occurs during mercerization because cellulose microfibrils are fixed by lignin which not to be intermingled.

  • This study aims to establish the optimal environmental conditions for storing textile products. Four textile products (cotton, wool, nylon, cotton/polyurethane) were used to produce experimental fabrics according to artificial contamination and washing conditions. Each fabric was subjected to three environmental conditions (A: 20-25℃/20% RH, B: 20-25℃/50% RH, C: 30-35℃/65% RH) for 4-12 weeks. Changes in textile characteristics include tensile strength, wrinkle recovery rate, and odor intensity. Results show that the change in tensile strength for the four test fabrics slightly decreased with a storage time of 4 to 12 weeks. The wrinkle recovery rate of the fabrics was the lowest under the C condition. UV exposure causes a substantial decrease in the tensile strength of the textiles. The change in odor characteristics was the highest for the odor intensity in the C condition. For storing textile products for sustainable management, it is desirable to maintain a temperature of 20 to 25℃ with a relative humidity of 50% RH or less and to provide ventilation in an enclosed storage space that can also block UV rays.

  • In this paper, we report and discuss the semi-permanently hydrophilic (SPH) treatment of polyester fabric using plasma polymerization and oxidation based on atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge (APDBD) technology. SiOxCy(-H) was coated on polyester fabric using Hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (HMCTSO) as a precursor, and then plasma oxidation was performed to change the upper layer of the thin film to SiO2-like. The degradation of hydrophilicity of the SPH polyester fabrics was evaluated by water contact angle (WCA) and wicking time after repeated washing. The surface morphology of the coated yarns was observed with scanning electron microscopy, and the presence of the coating layer was confirmed by measuring the Si peak using energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The WCA of the SPH polyester fabric increased to 50 degrees after 30 washes, but it was still hydrophilic compared to the untreated fabric. The decrease in hydrophilicity of the SPH fabric was due to peeling of the SiOxCy(-H) thin film coated on polyester yarns.

  • Purpose: During the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) outbreak, mask-wearing is required to protect against and limit the spread of infection, but it can directly affect skin problems. Change in skin condition might be related to mental health. This study explored the association between skin conditions and behavior of skin cares and stress levels during the Covid-19pandemics. Research design, data and methodology: A survey was conducted on 516 adults who were aware of damaged skin due to continuous wearing of masks for a long time during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The study included 164 men and 352 women in the Republic of Korea. Results: Skin conditions and behavior of skin cares associated with stress perceptions. A multiple linear regression model was used adjusting for potential confounder. Conclusion: Since management so far in the COVID-19 Pandemic can cause skin concerns and change the original skin type, it is necessary to redefine and improve the use of skin care, face-washing methods, and functional cosmetics. People with high and low interest in skin type recognition and management were evenly identified, and it was confirmed that stress awareness decreases as awareness of skin care attitude increases.
