This study has been carried out to examine the feasibility of soil washing process for reducing arsenic contamination level of soil around $Dalch\hat{e}n$ Mine. The results of physicochemical tests of the target soil showed that pH was weak alkalic ($pH{\simeq}7.8$), soil texture was coarse sand, and organic contents (5.7%) and CEC (Cation exchange capacity; 21.5 meq/100 g) were similar with those of soils generally found in Korea. Contamination levels of arsenic were found to over 201 mg/kg which exceed the Korea standard levels of countermeasure and concern. To investigate chemical partitioning of heavy metals, sequential extraction procedures were adopted and it was found that arsenic was predominantly associated with the residual fraction among five fractional forms as much as over 85%, which is demonstrating that only less than 15% of all might be vulnerable to a selected washing agents. Among 6 kinds of washing agents applied on the screening for arsenic-contaminated soil, HCl and $H_3PO_4$ solution were selected as promising washing agents. In comparison with HCl and $H_3PO_4$ solutions for arsenic washing by kinetic experiment in the change of pH, soil-solution ratio, temperature, and washing solution concentration, $H_3PO_4$ solution was determined to best one of agents tested, which showed faster washing rate than HCl to accomplish regulatory goal.

The removal efficiency of several washing agents on the $Cs^+$ ion was investigated. Leaching of $Cs^+$ ion from the soil surface by washing agents is affected by the exchange capability of the washing solution. Reuse tests of the effective soil washing agents such as $BaCl_2$, NaOH, citric acid+ $HNO_3$ and oxalic acid were performed. NaOH, citric acid + $HNO_3$ and oxalic acid solutions can be reused after passing through the ion exchange column. Among the tested solutions, both of citric acid+ $HNO_3$ and oxalic acid were effective for the decontamination of TRIGA research reactor soil. The radioactivity of soils can be reduced to a release level by the successive application.
Experimental research is needed to provide information on the removal of bloodstains since washing clothes contaminated with blood is necessary for medical related fields (such as ambulance workers and doctors) as well as for women of childbearing age. This study investigated efficient washing conditions for the removal of bloodstains with a focus on washing temperature, fiber type and blood ageing time. Polyester/cotton fabric showed the highest detergency from among three fabrics that were influenced by the composition of the fiber and the structure of the yarn and fabric. When examining the effect of detergent, it was concluded that the alkalinity over pH 10 was essential to remove bloodstains and that auxiliary agents such as soil antiredeposition agents and bleach had a significant effect on the removal of bloodstains. Washing temperature showed the highest detergency at 20℃ due to the activity of the enzyme without the denaturalization of blood. Blood-ageing influenced detergency by inducing changes in the adsorption area and chemical bond. A combination of methods such as quick removal after contamination, use of alkaline detergents including soil antiredeposition agents and bleach, and low-temperature washing could help remove bloodstains.
This study was carried out to investigate K/S values, surface color, the fastness to washing, bacteria reduction rate of the silk and cotton fabrics dyed with Rhus verniciflua extract under the various dyeing conditions. The optimum dyeing temperature, dyeing time, dyeing pH and repetition of the silk fabrics dyed with Rhus verniciflua extract were $l00^{\circ}C, 30min., pH 5, five times repetition respectively, but in the cotton fabrics, it were $60^{\circ}C . 30min., pH 7, one times repetition. It were colored orangish Yellow in the silk fabrics and colored bright yellow in the cotton fabrics dyed with Rhus verniciflua extract. Surface color(munsell value) was not changed by the mordanting agents but those of the silk showed high tone when mordanting with stannous chloride, and it was decolored and darked when mordanting with ferric sulfate. The fastness to washing in the silk fabrics dyed with mordanting agents improved in 4~5 grade, but the cotton fabrics were 3~4 grade, so washing fastness of the silk and cotton fabrics were significantly improved when washing with the neutral detergent. The bacteria reduction rate of the silk fabrics increased drastically by dyeing of Rhus verniciflua extract.
To study the effect of the bleaching agents in detergents on the degradation of cotton fabrics, the carboxyl contents, copper numbers, degree of polymerization, the change of tensile strengths and fiber surfaces of cotton fabric before and after washing were examined. The results obtained were as follows: As the cycles and temperature of washing increased, the carboxyl content of washed cotton fabric changed little but the copper unmber of cotton fabric was increased. At 6$0^{\circ}C$ , 8$0^{\circ}C$ the copper number of cotton fabric washed with soidum perborate (PB) was higher than that of with sodium percarbonate (PC). The degree of polymeriazation and tensile strength of cotton fabric were decreased and at higher temperature those were more decreased but were less decreased when tetraacetyehylenediamine (TAED) was added. The degree of polymerization had negative relation with copper unmber but with tensile strength of cotton fabric had positive relation. Cotton fiber surface was more degraded by bleaching agents and hydrogen peroxide exhaustion was increased as the temperature of washing increased. And hydrogen peroxide exhaustion had negative relation with the degree of polymerization.
The optimal condition for minimal agglomeration of barium titanyl oxalate tetrahydrate, the precipitate on preparing barium titanate by oxalate process, was investigated. Burette-dropping and dual-nozzle-spraying were used as adding methods. pH of washing water for precipitates was changed, and sodium pyrophosphate solution, methanol, ethoanol, and acetone were used as washing agents for precipitates, as well as distilled water. Drying temperature was changed from $50^{\circ}C$ to $120^{\circ}C$. Spraying, methanol-washing, and drying at $60^{\circ}C$ showed the most dispersed distribution, Below $70^{\circ}C$, the crystalline phases were observed.

Soil washing is one of the most frequently used remediation technologies for heavy metal-contaminated soils. Inorganic and organic acids and chelating agents that can enhance the removal of heavy metals from contaminated soils have been employed as soil washing agents. However, the toxicity, low removal efficiency and high cost of these chemicals limit their use. Given that humic substance (HS) can effectively chelate heavy metals, the development of an eco-friendly, performance-efficient and cost-effective soil washing agent using a nano-scale chelator composed of HS was examined in this study. Copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) were selected as target heavy metals. In soil washing experiments, HS concentration, pH, soil:washing solution ratio and extraction time were evaluated with regard to washing efficiency and the chelation effect. The highest removal rates by soil washing (69% for Cu and 56% for Pb) were achieved at an HS concentration of 1,000 mg/L and soil:washing solution ratio of 1:25. Washing with HS was found to be effective when the pH value was higher than 8, which can be attributed to the increased chelation effect between HS and heavy metals at the high pH range. In contrast, the washing efficiency decreased markedly in the low pH range due to HS precipitation. The chelation capacities for Cu and Pb in the aqueous phase were determined to be 0.547mmol-Cu/g-HS and 0.192mmol-Pb/g-HS, respectively.
Inorganic acids such as HCl, HNO3, and H2SO4 have been commonly applied to soil washing of heavy metals-contaminated soil due to their cost-effectiveness. However, implementing the 'Chemical Substance Control Act' requires off-site risk assessment of the chemicals used in the soil washing. Therefore, in this study, organic acids or Fe(III)-based washing agents were evaluated to replace commonly used inorganic acids. Ferric removed heavy metals via H+ generated by hydrolysis, which is similar to the HCl used in the control group. Oxalic acid and citric acid were effective to remove Cu, Zn, and Cd from soil. Organic acids could not remove Pb because they could form Pb-organic acid complexes with low solubility. Furthermore, Pb could be adsorbed onto the iron-organic acid complex on the soil surface. Ferric could remove exchangeable-carbonate, Fe-Mn hydroxide, and organic matter and sulfides bound heavy metals (F1, F2, and F3). Organic acids could remove the exchangeable-carbonate and Fe-Mn hydroxide bound metals (F1&F2). Therefore, this research shows that the fractionation of heavy metals in the soil and the properties of washing agents should be considered in the selection of agents in the process design.
In order to investigate the detergency effect of stained cotton and PET fabric, respectively, these fabrics stained with solid soils such as carbon black, liquid paraffin, and fat and examined the detergency effect in the optimum washing condition. The evaluation of washing efficiency of washed fabrics studied by using the surface reflectance measurement before and after washing treatment. The maximum detergency effect of stained cotton and PET fabric obtained in the mixed washing liquor-bleachig agen(ml)/concentrated washig agent(g/l). To obtain the excellent detergency effect, 2-step washing treatment, pre-washing by bleaching agent only and washing by concentrated detergent, is preferred. In comparing the detergency of polyester and cotton fabric, the detergency of stained polyester fabric superior than that of stained cotton fabric because of the difference of adhesive force between soil material and fabric in preparing soled stained fabric. In this study, we also studied the degree of fabric damage by the measurement of tensile strength change. From the results of the tensile strength measurement, the damage of washed fabric before and after washing treatment was nearly changed.
Calcium (Ca) and potassium (K) were introduced to remove Sr and Cs in soil, respectively. Four factor and three level Box-Bhenken design was employed to determine the optimal washing condition of Ca- and K-based solutions, and the ranges tested were 0.1 to 1 M of Ca or K, L/S ratio of 5 to 20, washing time of 0.5 to 2 h, and pH of 2 to 7. The optimal washing condition determined was 1 M of Ca or K, L/S ratio of 20, washing time of 1 h, and pH of 2, and Ca-based and K-based solutions showed 68 and 81% removal efficiency for Sr and Cs, respectively in soil. For comparison, widely used conventional washing agents such as 0.075 M EDTA, 0.01 M citric acid, 0.01 M oxalic acid, and 0.05 M phosphoric acid were tested, and they showed 25 to 30% of Sr and Cs removal efficiency. Tessier sequential extraction was employed to identify the changes in chemical forms of Sr and Cs during the washing. In contrast to the conventional washing agents, Ca-based and K-based solutions were able to release relatively strongly bound forms of Sr and Cs such as Fe/Mn-oxide and organic matter bound forms, suggesting the involvement of direct substitution mechanism, probably due to the physicochemical similarities between Sr-Ca and Cs-K.
