Concerning the pathogenesis of acquired cholesteatoma in attic, there has been postulated theories by immigration from the Shrapnell's portion of the tympanic membrane, posterosuperior quardrant of the deep meatal skin and invagination of the margin of the central perforation. Otherwise, squamous metaplasia of the epithelium lining the middle ear cleft has been supported as a possible cause of cholesteatoma. Clinically, there has been known of the facts that cholesteatoma is formed in the attic but the pathogenesis concerning the acquired cholesteatoma is not still exactly reported. Recently, authors analyzed 170 cases of cholesteatomatous middle ear performed the operation to the middle ear cleft. On the operation finding, when the primary focus of the cholesteatoma was in the attic, we observed two types of perforation, marginal and central perforation in the Shrapnell's portion, and retraction to the Prussak's space, bony defect on the Rivinus notch. Among 36 cases of the cholesteatoma, the perforation of the Shrapnell's portion are 5 cases. Bony defect on the Rivinus notch and marginal perforation on the posterosuperior quadrant of the Shrapnell's portion are 21 cases. Among these cases, 3 cases are combined with central perforation of the Shrapnell's portion. Conclusively, the reasons that cholesteatoma is favorable site in the attic: 1) Excretion of the inflammatory discharge in the attic is difficult because of the distance of the E-tube. 2) The Shrapnell's portion has less collagen fiber than the pars tensa and it is thin because the elastic fibers are rich in it. It is easy to retract within the Prussak's space to the cases of keratinizing hyperplasia. 3) The epidermis attached at the Rivinus notch of the superior portion on the Shrapnell's portion is invaginated through the destructed bony wall of the Rivinus notch and the margin of the tympanic membrane in the response to the keratinizing hyperplasia.
Ultrastructure of the ependymal cells of X-irradiated rats on their head were studied. Rats weighing $200\sim250gm$ were X-irradiated on their head and neck areas. Total exposures were 3,000 rads or 6,000 rads depending on experimental groups. And irradiated rats were sacrificed on 6 hours, 2 days and 6 days following the radiation exposures. Animals were perfused through the heart with 1% glutaraldehyde-1% paraformaldehyde solution, under ether-anesthesia. The tissues from the wall of lateral ventricles were fixed in the 2% osmium tetroxide solution. The results observed with electron microscope were as follow: 1. In 6 hours group, many ependymal cells were swelled, luminal portions of cytoplasms of some cells protruded into the ventricular lumen, and many cilia were lost or irregularly altered. 2. In 2 days group, ependymal cells were swelled more severely and subependymal edema were pronounced. 3. Protruded cytoplasm contained usually basal bodies of cilia, groups of mitochondria, endoplasmic reticula , etc. 4. Following X-irradiations, some protruded masses contained neural elements including the axon terminals with dense core vesicles. Axons and axon terminals were also found in the enlarged intercellular spaces among ependymal cells. From the above results, the heavy irradiation on the head area of the rat induced alteration of the ependymal cells lining the lateral ventricle. Hence the ependymal functions of selective barrier, protective barrier, and metabolic barrier could be altered following X-irradiation on the head.
The pristine fluorine-doped $SnO_2$ (abbreviated as FTO) inverse opal (IO) was developed using a 410 nm polystyrene bead template. The nanolayered copper tungsten oxide ($CuWO_4$) was decorated on the FTO IO film using a facile electrochemical deposition, subsequently followed by annealing at $500^{\circ}C$ for 90 min. The morphologies, crystalline structure, optical properties and photoelectrochemical characteristics of the FTO and $CuWO_4$-decorated FTO (briefly denoted as $FTO/CuWO_4$) IO film were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, showing FTO IO in the hexagonally closed-pack arrangement with a pore diameter and wall thickness of about 300 nm and 20 nm, respectively. Above this film, the $CuWO_4$ was electrodeposited by controlling the cycling number in cyclic voltammetry, suggesting that the $CuWO_4$ formed during 4 cycles (abbreviated as $CuWO_4$(4 cycles)) on FTO IO film exhibited partial distribution of $CuWO_4$ nanoparticles. Additional distribution of $CuWO_4$ nanoparticles was observed in the case of $FTO/CuWO_4$(8 cycles) IO film. The $CuWO_4$ layer exhibits triclinic structure with an indirect band gap of approximately 2.5 eV and shows the enhanced visible light absorption. The photoelectrochemical (PEC) behavior was evaluated in the 0.5 M $Na_2SO_4$ solution under solar illumination, suggesting that the $FTO/CuWO_4$(4 cycles) IO films exhibit a photocurrent density ($J_{sc}$) of $0.42mA/cm^2$ at 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE, denoted as $V_{RHE}$), while the FTO IO and $FTO/CuWO_4$(8 cycles) IO films exhibited a $J_{sc}$ of 0.14 and $0.24mA/cm^2$ at $1.23V_{RHE}$, respectively. This difference can be explained by the increased visible light absorption by the $CuWO_4$ layer and the favorable charge separation/transfer event in the cascading band alignment between FTO and $CuWO_4$ layer, enhancing the overall PEC performance.
Biological factors (e.g. microorganism activity) in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) play essential roles for degradation and/or removal of organic matters. In this study, to understand the microbial functional roles in WWTP, we tried to isolate and characterize a bacterial strain from activated sludge sample. Strain S16 was isolated from the activated sludge of a municipal WWTP in Daejeon metropolitan city, the Republic of Korea. The cells were a Gram-stain-positive, non-motile, facultative anaerobe, and rod-shaped. Strain S16 grew at a temperature of $15{\sim}40^{\circ}C$ (optimum, $30^{\circ}C$), with 0~9.0% (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 1.0~2.0%), and at pH 5.5~9.0 (optimum, pH 7.0~7.5). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain S16 was most closely related to the unique species Miniimonas arenae NBRC $106267^T$ (99.79%, 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) of the genus Miniimonas. The cell wall contained alanine, glutamic acid, serine, and ornithine. Although the isolation source of the type strain NBRC $106267^T$ which considered as a marine microorganism is sea sand, that of strain S16 is terrestrial environment. It might raise an ecological question for habitat transition. Therefore, comparative genome analysis will be valuable investigation for shedding light on their potential metabolic traits and genomic streamlining.
Mixing characteristics and backdraft dynamics were investigated using large eddy simulation for compartments initially filled with methane fuel. Four different opening geometries, i.e. conventional door opening case (Door) and the cases where horizontal door was implemented on the upper ($Slot_U$), middle ($Slot_M$) and lower part ($Slot_L$) of side wall, were considered in the simulations. For cases without ignition, the amounts of inflow oxygen and outflow fuel from the compartment opening were, from largest to smallest, Door > $Slot_U$ ~ $Slot_M$ > $Slot_L$. However, the fuel and oxygen were the best mixed for the $Slot_U$ case while the fuel and oxygen were not well mixed and in relatively separated two layers for the $Slot_L$ case. The global equivalence ratio defined by the amounts of fuel and oxygen in the compartment was not correlated reasonably with the peak pressure of backdraft. The peak pressure during backdraft was the highest for the $Slot_U$ case, a well mixed condition of fuel and air, and backdraft was not found for the $Slot_L$ where the pressure rise was not so high due to the mixing status. The peak pressures for the Door and $Slot_M$ cases were in between Door and $Slot_L$ cases. The peak pressure during backdraft was well correlated with the total amount of heat release until the instance of backdraft occurrence.
The speech privacy of closed office rooms located in a university campus was measured and assessed in terms of SPC (Speech Privacy Class) values. The measurements of two quantities, the LD (Level Difference) between a source and a receiving room, and the background noise level ($L_b$) at the receiving room were carried out in 5 rooms located in 3 different buildings in the university campus. Each of the 5 rooms was adjacent to both offices and corridors through walls. The TL (Transmission Loss) between the source and the receiver room was also measured to compare the difference of two standard methods, ASTM E2836-10 and KS F 2809. The present results show that the speech privacy of the 5 office rooms is not met the requirement for a minimum SPC values of 70. A minimum LD value of 41 dB between the source and the receiver room should be achieved for having a SPC value of 70 when the mean measured value of $L_b$ at the receiving room is 29.2 dB. That is, the TL(avg) value averaged over the octave bands from 160 Hz to 5000 Hz between the source and the receiver room should be or greater than 40 dB. The most important architectural factor influencing the LD value is the presence of openings, such as doors, and windows, on the adjacent walls between the source and receiving room. Therefore, if the opening of the adjacent wall is replaced by an opening with high sound insulation, the appropriate SPC value of the research and office rooms can be achieved.

Although the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is continuously being advanced, the number of environmental disputes regarding it is still on the rise. In order to supplement this, it is necessary to analyze the accumulated complaint cases. In this study, through the analysis of complaint cases, it is possible to identify matters that need to be improved in the existing EIA stages as well as various damages and conflicts that were not previously considered or predicted. In the process, we dervied 'complaint-based data demands' that should be additionally examined to improve the EIA. To this end, a total of 348 news articles were collected by searching with combinations of 'environmental impact assessment' and a keyword for each of the six assessment groups. As a result of analysis of collected data, a total of 54 complaint-based data demands were suggested. Among those were 15 items including 'impact of changes in seawater flow on water quality' in the category of water environment; 13 items including 'area of green buffer zone' in atmospheric environment; 10 items including 'impact of soundproof wall on wind corridor' in living environment; 8 items including 'expected number of users' in socioeconomic environment, 4 items including 'feasibility assessment of development site in terms of environmental and ecological aspects' in natural ecological environment; and 4 items including 'prediction of sediment runoff and damaged areas according to the increase in intensity and frequency of torrential rain' in land environment. In future research, more systematic complaint collection and analysis as well as specific provision methods regarding stages, subjects, and forms of use should be sought to apply the derived data demands in the actual EIA process. It is expected that this study can serve to advance the prediction and assessment of EIA in the future and to minimize environmental impact as well as social conflict in advance.
To realize the recycling utilization of waste concrete and alleviate the shortage of resources, 11 specimens of steel reinforced recycled concrete (SRRC) filled circular steel tube columns were designed and manufactured in this study, and the cyclic loading tests on the specimens of columns were also carried out respectively. The hysteretic curves, skeleton curves and performance indicators of columns were obtained and analysed in detail. Besides, the finite element model of columns was established through OpenSees software, which considered the adverse effect of recycled coarse aggregate (RA) replacement rates and the constraint effect of circular steel tube on internal RAC. The numerical calculation curves of columns are in good agreement with the experimental curves, which shows that the numerical model is relatively reasonable. On this basis, a series of nonlinear parameters analysis on the hysteretic behaviors of columns were also investigated. The results are as follows: When the replacement rates of RA increases from 0 to 100%, the peak loads of columns decreases by 7.78% and the ductility decreases slightly. With the increase of axial compression ratio, the bearing capacity of columns increases first and then decreases, but the ductility of columns decreases rapidly. Increasing the wall thickness of circular steel tube is very profitable to improve the bearing capacity and ductility of columns. When the section steel ratio increases from 5.54% to 9.99%, although the bearing capacity of columns is improved, it has no obvious contribution to improve the ductility of columns. With the decrease of shear span ratio, the bearing capacity of columns increases obviously, but the ductility decreases, and the failure mode of columns develops into brittle shear failure. Therefore, in the engineering design of columns, the situation of small shear span ratio (i.e., short columns) should be avoided as far as possible. Based on this, the calculation model on the skeleton curves of columns was established by the theoretical analysis and fitting method, so as to determine the main characteristic points in the model. The effectiveness of skeleton curve model is verified by comparing with the test skeleton curves.

A base expansion micropile was developed to improve the bearing capacity of the micropile, which bears a simple device installed at the pile base. Under an axial load, this base expansion structure radially expands at the pile tip and attaches itself around ground, compressing the boring wall in the construction stage. In this study, conventional and base expansion micropiles were constructed in the weathered rock where micropiles are commonly installed. Further, field load tests were conducted to verify the bearing capacity enhancement effect. From the load test results, it was revealed that the shaft resistance of base expansion micropiles was about 12% higher than that of conventional micropiles. The load transfer analysis results also showed that compared to conventional micropiles, the unit skin friction and unit end bearing of base expansion micropiles were 15.4% and 315.1% higher, respectively, in the bearing zone of the micropile.
In this paper, we have studied the complex permittivities and their influence on the design of microwave absorbers of E-glass fabric/epoxy composite laminates containing three different types of carbon-based nano conductive fillers such as carbon black (CB), carbon nano fiber (CNF) and multi-wall nano tube (MWNT). The measurements were performed fur permittivities at the frequency band of 0.5 GHz$\sim$18.0 GHz using a vector network analyzer with a 7 mm coaxial air line. The experimental results show that the complex permittivities of the composites depend strongly on the natures and concentrations of the conductive fillers. The real and imaginary parts of the complex permittivities of the composites were proportional to the filler concentrations. But, depending on the types of fillers and frequency band, the increasing rates of the real and imaginary parts with respect to the filler concentrations were all different. These different rates can have an effect on the thickness in designing the single layer microwave absorbers. The effect of the different rates at 10 GHz was examined by using Cole-Cole plot; the plot is composed of a single layer absorber solution line and measured permittivities from these three types of composites. Single layer absorbers of 3 different thicknesses using carbon nano materials were fabricated and the -10 dB band of absorbing performances were all about 3 GHz.
