The effect of incidence angle on the three-dimensional flow and aerodynamic loss in the tip leakage flow region downstream of a turbine rotor cascade has been investigated for two tip gap-to-chord ratios of h/c=0.0% (no tip gap) and 2.0%. The incidence angle is changed to be $i=-10^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}$, and $5^{\circ}$. The results show that for $i=5^{\circ}$, secondary flows including the passage vortex are intensified noticeably, and there is a strong interaction between the passage and tip leakage vortices. For $i=-10^{\circ}$, however, the passage vortex is weakened significantly, so that there exists only a strong leakage-jet-like secondary flows near the casing wall. For h/c=0.0% and 2.0%, aerodynamic loss tends to increase with increasing i from $-10^{\circ}$ to $5^{\circ}$. A small increment of i in its positive incidence range results in a remarkable aerodynamic loss increase, while increasing i in the negative incidence range leads to a small change in the aerodynamic loss generation.
A computational fluid dynamics model for predicting moderator circulation inside the Canada deuterium uranium (CANDU) reactor vessel has been developed to estimate the local subcooling of the moderator in the vicinity of the calandria tubes. The buoyancy effect induced by the internal heating is accounted for by the Boussinesq approximation. The standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model with logarithmic wall treatment is applied to predict the turbulent jet flows from the inlet nozzles. The matrix of the calandria tubes in the core region is simplified to a porous media in which the anisotropic hydraulic impedance is modeled using an empirical correlation of pressure loss. The governing equations are solved by DFX-4.4, a commercial CFD code developed by AEA technology. The resultant flow patterns of the constant-z slices containing the inlet nozzles and the outlet port are "mined-type", as observed in the former 2-dimensional experimental investigations. With 103% full power for conservatism, the maximum temperature of the moderator is $82.9^{\circ}C$ at the top of the core region. Considering the hydrostatic pressure change, the minimum subcooling is $24.8^{\circ}C$.
This research work presents an experimental study's outcomes to reveal the impact of an O-ring on the flow control over a sphere placed in a turbulent boundary layer. The investigation is performed quantitatively and qualitatively using particle image velocimetry (PIV) and dye visualization. The sphere model having a diamater of 42.5 mm is located in a turbulent boundary layer flow over a smooth plate for gap ratios of 0≤G/D≤1.5 at Reynolds number of 5 × 103. Flow characteristics, including patterns of instantaneous vorticity, streaklines, time-averaged streamlines, velocity vectors, velocity fluctuations, Reynolds stress correlations, and turbulence kinetic energy (), are compared and discussed for a naked sphere and spheres having O-rings. The boundary layer velocity gradient and proximity of the sphere to the flat plate profoundly influence the flow dynamics. At proximity ratios of G/D=0.1 and 0.25, a wall jet is formed between lower side of the sphere and flat plate, and velocity fluctuations increase in regions close to the wall. At G/D=0.25, the jet flow also induces local flow separations on the flat plate. At higher proximity ratios, the velocity gradient of the boundary layer causes asymmetries in the mean flow characteristics and turbulence values in the wake region. It is observed that the O-ring with various placement angles (𝜃) on the sphere has a considerable alteration in the flow structure and turbulence statistics on the wake. At lower placement angles, where the O-ring is closer to the forward stagnation point of the sphere, the flow control performance of the O-ring is limited; however, its impact on the flow separation becomes pronounced as it is moved away from the forward stagnation point. At G/D=1.50 for O-ring diameters of 4.7 (2 mm) and 7 (3 mm) percent of the sphere diameter, the -ring exhibits remarkable flow control at 𝜃=50° and 𝜃=55° before laminar flow separation occurrence on the sphere surface, respectively. This conclusion is yielded from narrowed wakes and reductions in turbulence statistics compared to the naked sphere model. The O-ring with a diameter of 3 mm and placement angle of 50° exhibits the most effective flow control. It decreases, in sequence, streamwise velocity fluctuations and length of wake recovery region by 45% and 40%, respectively, which can be evaluated as source of decrement in drag force.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the initial detection time and development of the fetal genital structures using ultrasound in twelve pregnant small bitches. The initial detection time of the fetal genital structures was as follows: genital tubercle at days 32.6; os penis at days 45.2; labia at days 45.7; scrotum at days 47.5. Ultrasonograms of fetal genital structure according to gestational stage were as follows: Undifferentiated stage (before day 35), the genital tubercle was observed to have a small elevation and just a hyper-echogenic structure in the midline between the umbilical cord and the tail in male and female fetus. Migration stage (between day 35~45), the genital tubercle was observed as a hyper-echogenic, bilobular, oval shaped and the genital tubercle began to migrate from the initial position toward the umbilical cord in males, and toward the tail in females. Differentiated stage (after day 46), the penis and os penis were observed to stand out in the abdominal wall and the scrotum was observed toward the perineal region in male fetuses. The labia was detected at the base of the tail in female fetuses. These results indicate that ultrasound of fetal genital structures could be useful for fetal gender determination and a completely prepartum evaluation of the canine fetus.
An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effect of periodic blowing and suction on a turbulent boundary layer. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to probe the characteristics of the flow. The local forcing was introduced to the boundary layer via a sinusoidally-oscillating jet issuing from a thin spanwise slot. Three forcing frequencies (f$^{+}$=0.044, 0.066 and 0.088) with a fixed forcing amplitude (A$^{+}$=0.6) were employed at $Re_{=690. The effect of the forcing angles ($\alpha$=60$^{\circ}$ , 90$^{\circ}$ and 120$^{\circ}$ ) was investigated under the fixed forcing frequency (f$^{+}$=0.088). The PIV results showed that the wall region velocity decreases on imposition of the local forcing. Inspection of phase-averaged velocity profiles revealed that spanwise large-scale vortices were generated in the downstream of the slot and persist further downstream. The highest reduction in skin friction was achieved at highest forcing frequency (f$^{+}$=0.088) and a forcing angle of $\alpha$=120$^{\circ}$. The spatial fraction of the vortices was examined to analyze the skin friction reduction.
Analysis for various driven nozzle position changes. The analysis was done for different Reynolds number in entrance region of jet-pump and for several diameter ratios of driven nozzle. (1) The largest absorption energy was found at the point s=1 in condition of diameter ratio 1:3.21 and point s=0.5 in condition of diameter ratio 1:2.25. (2) The absorption energy was not related to the change of entrance velocity and the driven nozzle position having the largest absorption energy was function for cross section ratio. (3) As the position of driven nozzle moves to the downstream, the absorption energy gets weaker. Because the energy from swirl was lost at the cross section gets smaller. (4) As the position of driven nozzle moves to the downstream, the injection energy leans to the upper direction wall and as the Reynolds number increase, the lean phenomenon is more distinct. (5) The flow quantity of driven nozzle, the diameter ratio 1:3.21, was 32% higher than that of 1 : 2.25 and as the inlet velocity gets faster the efficiency decreased. And as the cross section of the driven nozzle increases.

This paper investigates the effects of Reynolds number (Re) on the aerodynamic characteristics of a twin-deck bridge. A 1:36 scale sectional model of a twin girder bridge was tested using the Wall of Wind (WOW) open jet wind tunnel facility at Florida International University (FIU). Static tests were performed on the model, instrumented with pressure taps and load cells, at high wind speeds with Re ranging from $1.3{\times}10^6$ to $6.1{\times}10^6$ based on the section width. Results show that the section was almost insensitive to Re when pitched to negative angles of attack. However, mean and fluctuating pressure distributions changed noticeably for zero and positive wind angles of attack while testing at different Re regimes. The pressure results suggested that with the Re increase, a larger separation bubble formed on the bottom surface of the upstream girder accompanied with a narrower wake region. As a result, drag coefficient decreased mildly and negative lift coefficient increased. Flow modification due to the Re increase also helped in distributing forces more equally between the two girders. The bare deck section was found to be prone to vortex shedding with limited dependence on the Re. Based on the observations, vortex mitigation devices attached to the bottom surface were effective in inhibiting vortex shedding, particularly at lower Re regime.
An unsteady numerical simulation was performed for locally-forced separated and reattaching flow over a backward-facing step. The local forcing was given to the separated and reattaching flow by means of a sinusoidally oscillating jet from a separation line. A version of the $k-{\varepsilon}-f_{\mu}$ model was employed, in which the near-wall behavior without reference to distance and the nonequilibrium effect in the recirculation region were incorporated. The Reynolds number based on the step height (H) was fixed at $Re_H=33000$, and the forcing frequency was varied in the range $0{\leq}St_H{\leq}2$. The predicted results were compared and validated with the experimental data of Chun and Sung. It was shown that the unsteady locally-forced separated and reattaching flows are predicted reasonably well with the $k-{\varepsilon}-f_{\mu}$ model. To characterize the large-scale vortex evolution due to the local forcing, numerical flow visualizations were carried out.
In case of aircraft impact on nuclear containment structures, the initial kinetic energy of the aircraft is transferred and absorbed by the outer containment, may causing either complete or partial failure of containment structure. In the present study safety analysis of BWR Mark III type containment has been performed. The total height of containment is 67 m. It has a circular wall with monolithic dome of 21m diameter. Crash analysis has been performed for fighter jet Phantom F4. A normal hit at the crown of containment dome has been considered. Numerical simulations have been carried out using finite element code ABAQUS/Explicit. Concrete Damage Plasticity model have been incorporated to simulate the behaviour of concrete at high strain rate, while Johnson-Cook elasto-visco model of ductile metals have been used for steel reinforcement. Maximum deformation in the containment building has reported as 33.35 mm against crash of Phantom F4. Deformations in concrete and reinforcements have been localised to the impact region. Moreover, no significant global damage has been observed in structure. It may be concluded from the present study that at higher velocity of aircraft perforation of the structure may happen.
A modification of the TEACH-like computer program based on the k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence transport was applied for predicting air mixing patterns and temperature distributions in a rectangular, slot-ventilated enclosure having obstructions ; a rectangular obstacle with heat flux, solid walls separates the passage and the pig pens, and purlins beneath the ceiling. Air flow patterns were calculated for the cases with and without the purlin, extending 300mm beneath the ceiling. Comparisons of prediction data of Randall & Battams(1976) showed air flow pattern predicted well for the case without the purlin. Heat was accumulated at the corner of the left side of the solid wall and the right-upper region of the simulated pigs. However the air distribution pattern was completely different from data for the case with the purlin. The deviation from the observation may be attributed to the difference of the geometric configuation. Exploring the cause of the deviation should be conducted in a further study. Temperature stratification was also observed due to incomplete mixing. The obstruction in the route of the inlet air jet at inlet should be avoided since most of kinetic energy dissipates at the abstacle duet to impingement.
