  • The Ground anchor is reinforcement to resist pull-out through ground that is used supports structure. The pull-out resistance of anchor is constructed by skin friction resistance from compression borehole wall in expanded wings and bearing pressure from the ground. Especially, underreamed ground anchor is reinforcement that adopts active reinforcement to prevent deformation of ground using bearing resistance generated reaming anchorage. This study is conducted to calculate bearing resistance of underreamed ground anchor. Realistic model tests were fulfilled to determine bearing resistance of anchor, and correlate results of tests to Uniaxial Compressive Strengths (UCS) of ground models that assumed weathered rock condition in 8 case. In a comprehensive series of the tests, the bearing resistances were measured by pull-out tests. The bearing resistances derived from tests have a linear correlation with UCS. We also suggest empirical equation between bearing resistance and UCS of rocks by single linear regression analyses. In test results of this study, the bearing resistances were evaluated approximately 13 times higher than UCS of the grounds, and it is qualitatively similar to numerical values of pull-out force derived from theory.

  • This study aimed to understand the mode characteristics of a droplet subject to periodic forced vibration and the detachment of a droplet placed on a plate surface. An surface was coated with Teflon to clearly observe the behavior of a droplet. The contact angle between the droplet and surface and the hysteresis were found to be approximately $115^{\circ}C$ and within $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. The coating process was performed in a clean room that had an environment with a low level of contaminants and impurities such as air dust, detergents, and particles. To predict the resonance frequency of a droplet, theoretical and experimental approaches were applied. Two high-speed cameras were configured to acquire side and top views and thus capture different characteristics of a droplet: the mode shape, the detachment, the separated secondary droplet, and the waggling motion. A comparison of the theoretical and experimental results shows no more than 18 discrepancies when predicting the resonance frequency. These differences seem to be caused by contact line friction, nonlinear wall adhesion, and the uncertainty of the experiment. For lower energy inputs, the contact line of the droplet was pinned and the oscillation pattern was axisymmetric. However, the contact line of the droplet was de-pinned as the oscillation became more vigorous with increased energy input. The size of each lobe at the resonance frequency is somewhat larger than that at the neighboring frequency. A droplet in mode 2, one of the primary mode frequencies, exhibits vertical periodic movement as well as detachment and secondary ejection from the main droplet.

  • This work investigated the particle morphology change to difference in milling media in a metal based composite fabrication process using a stirred ball mill with ball behavior of DEM simulation. A simulation of the three dimensional motion of grinding media in the stirred ball mill for the research of grinding mechanism to clarify the force, kinetic energy, and medium velocity of grinding media were calculated. In addition, the rotational speed of the stirred ball mill was changed to the experimental conditions for the composite fabrication, and change of the input energy was also calculated while changing the ball material, the flow velocity, and the friction coefficient under the same conditions. As the rotating speed of the stirred ball mill increased, the impact energy between the grinding media to media, media to wall, and media and the stirrer increased quantitatively. Also, we could clearly analyze the change of the particle morphology under the same experimental conditions, and it was found that the ball behavior greatly influences in the particle morphology changes.

  • Underground structures will be affected by the additional surcharge loads such as traffic load et al. Terzaghi (1956) suggested the equation on the influences of surcharge loads in vertically backfilled spaces. In field, the shapes of backfill spaces are not always formed vertically. Then the Terzagi (1956) equation is not suitable to use because of boundary condition. This study suggests equation to calculate the stress in backfilled space caused by surcharge loads when the backfilled space is sloped symmetrically. The suggested equation is verified by carbon box test and numerical analysis. The experimental results show good agreement with the suggested equation but the numerical analysis result shows a little disagreement. The differences are estimated to be caused by the fact that ground made by carbon rod has become more dense and internal frction and wall friction has increased itself as surcharge load is added but that this increase can not be considered in the numerical analysis. The suggested equation shows good agreement with Terzaghi (1956) equation in case of sloped backfill ground. According to the results, it is considered that the suggested equation can be applied not only to sloped space but also to vertical space. Further investigation using full scale experiment is needed.

  • Frost heave is one of the representative engineering characteristics in cold regions. In South Korea, which is located in seasonal frost area, structural damage caused by frost heave and thaw happens and the need for research on the frost heave is increasing. In this paper, newly developed transparent temperature-controllable cell is used to focus on the frost heave. Frost susceptible artificial soil is used to analyze water intake rate which is one of the important factors in frost susceptibility criteria. Frost heave rate and water intake rate have similar behavior after heave by freezing of pore water converges. O-ring installed in the upper pedestal to measure water intake rate generates side friction between the inner wall of the freezing cell and O-ring, thereby hindering frost heave. Therefore, the frost susceptibility criteria using the water intake rate is not reliable. It is appropriate to use frost heave rate which has similar behavior with water intake rate. Frost heave tests were performed under two different specimen heights. Overburden pressure, temperature gradient and dry unit weight were set under similar state. Based on laboratory testing results, frost heave is independent on the specimen height.

  • As the research about increasing the efficiency of dredging soil transport, the technology, which reduce the friction between pipe wall and fluid in the pipe and disturbed generating pipe blockage, has been developed. So for the purpose of applying this technology to real construction site, main test has been tried at the real scale test in field. As a test result, this paper will show 30% flow efficiency increasing by permitted electro magnetic force to the pipe. And test result was evaluated as a ultra sonic velocity profiler. To propose the design technique and the execution manual of the high efficiency dredging material transport technic, this research have confirmed flow status changing depending on a soil material kind under electro-magnetic field and analyze the effect of electro-magnetic field which affects to each dredged soil material transportation. For achieving this research, EMF(Electro-Magnetic Field) generator is installed on the dredger(20,000HP) and through monitored flow status, dredging soil flow rate and sampled material specification is confirmed. Also dredger operating condition is measured and dredger power for soil transportation, hydraulic gradient and flow rate are compared, as transportation efficiency is calculated by this parameter, it is possible to check transportation efficiency improvement depending on each dredged soil material under electro-magnetic field. To verify the technique of dredged soil transfer using electromagnetic field, which is the core technique of the high efficiency dredged soil transfer, and the technique of expert system for pipeline transfer and the flow state. This could lead to a verification of transfer efficiency according to the characteristics of the dredged soil (sand, clay, silt) and the transfer distance (5km, 10km, 15km), which is planned to be used for a technology development of pump power reduction and long-distance transfer applying the high efficiency dredged soil transfer technology.

  • A base expansion micropile was developed to improve the bearing capacity of the micropile, which bears a simple device installed at the pile base. Under an axial load, this base expansion structure radially expands at the pile tip and attaches itself around ground, compressing the boring wall in the construction stage. In this study, conventional and base expansion micropiles were constructed in the weathered rock where micropiles are commonly installed. Further, field load tests were conducted to verify the bearing capacity enhancement effect. From the load test results, it was revealed that the shaft resistance of base expansion micropiles was about 12% higher than that of conventional micropiles. The load transfer analysis results also showed that compared to conventional micropiles, the unit skin friction and unit end bearing of base expansion micropiles were 15.4% and 315.1% higher, respectively, in the bearing zone of the micropile.

  • In order to express exactly the total resistance of bottom trawl nets subjected simultaneously to the water flow and the bottom friction, the influence of frictional force was added to the formular for the flow resistance of trawl nets obtained by previous papev and the experimental data obtained by other investigators were analyzed by the formula. The analyzation produced the total resistance R (kg) expressed as $$R=4.5(\frac{S_n}{S_m})^{1.2}S\;v^{-1.8}+20(Bv)^{1.1}$$ where $S(m^2)$ was the wall area of nets, $S_m\;(m^2)$ the cross-sectional area of net mouths, $S_n\;(m^2)$ the area of nets projected to the plane perpendicular to the water flow, B (m) the made-up circumference at the fore edge of bag parts, and v(m/sec) the dragging velocity. From the viewpoint that expressing R in the form of $R=kSv^2$ was a usual practice, however, the resistant coefficient $k(kg{\cdot}sec^2/m^4)$ was compared with the factors influencing it by reusing the experimental data. The comparison gave that the coefficient k might be expressed approximately as a function of BL only and so the resistance R (kg) as $$R=18{\alpha}B^{0.5}L\;v^{1.5}$$ where L (m) was the made-up total length of nets and $\alpha=S/BL$. But the values of a in the nets did not deviate largely from their mean, 0.48, for all the nets and so the general expression of R (kg) for all the bottom trawl nets could be written as $$R=9\;B^{0.5}\;L\;v^{1.5}$$.
