  • Background: High-heeled shoes can change spinal alignment and feet movement, which leads to muscle fatigue and discomfort in lumbopelvic region, legs, and feet while walking. Objects: This study aimed to identify the effects of different shoe heel heights on the walking velocity and electromyographic (EMG) activities of the lower leg muscles during short- and long-distance walking in young females. Methods: Fifteen young females were recruited in this study. The experiments were performed with the following two different shoe heel heights: 0 cm and 7 cm. All participants underwent an electromyographic procedure to measure the activities and fatigue levels of the tibialis anterior (TA), medial gastrocnemius (MG), rectus femoris (RF), and hamstring muscles with each heel height during both short- and long-distance walking. The walking velocities were measured using the short-distance (10-m walk) and long-distance (6-min walk) walking tests. Results: Significant interaction effects were found between heel height and walking distance conditions for the EMG activities and fatigue levels of TA and MG muscles, and walking velocity (p<.05). The walking velocity and activities of the TA, MG, and RF muscles appeared to be significantly different between the 0 cm and 7 cm heel heights during both short- and long-distance walking (p<.05). Significant difference in the fatigue level of the MG muscle were found between the 0 cm and 7 cm heel heights during long-distance walking. In addition, walking velocity and the fatigue level of the MG muscle at the 7 cm heel height revealed significant differences in the comparison of short- and long-distance walking (p<.05). Conclusion: These findings indicate that higher shoe heel height leads to a decrease in the walking velocity and an increase in the activity and fatigue level of the lower leg muscles, particularly during long-distance walking.

  • Unrestricted measurement method of three-dimensional walking distance utilizing body acceleration and terrestrial magnetism is discussed. The three-dimensional walking distance is derived by the integration of the three dimensional acceleration of foot during swing phase. Since the sensor system attached on the foot rotates during swing phase, the acceleration data measured on the foot include acceleration of gravity which causes inaccurate calculation of the velocity and the distance. Three gyros are used to compensate the rotation of the sensor system. Moreover, one geomagnetic sensor is employed to derive the heading direction of the subject Healthy volunteers performed ...

  • Modern society is an interaction between many different environments. It is important to the mutual relationships between people and especially between people and the environment. One of the mutual relationships between people and the environment is the traffic system, especially the traffic signals which give priority to pedestrian and traffic flow. Traffic signals for the pedestrian on the crosswalk contribute to a safe road environment for the pedestrian, while the traffic signals for the pedestrian running for the flickering of the green signal causes psychological stress. Therefore, this study investigated whether the walking velocity was influenced by the flickering of the green signal or not. Also, this study investigated whether the walking distance had an effect on the walking velocity of the elderly pedestrian or not. It was proved that the flickering of the green signal and the walking distance influenced the walking velocity and subjective sensitiveness according to the result of this study.

  • Background: The method of measuring the walking function of patients with chronic stroke differs depending on patients walking capability and environmental conditions. Objects: This study aimed to demonstrate the influences of walking capacity and environmental conditions on the results of short- and long-distance walk tests in patients with chronic stroke. Methods: Forty patients with chronic stroke volunteered for this study, and allocated to group-1 (<.4m/s, household walking, $n_1=13$), group-2 (.4~.8m/s, limited community ambulation, $n_2=16$), and group-3 (>.8m/s, community ambulation, $n_3=11$) according to their walking capacity. The 10-meter walk test (10MWT) and 6-min walk tests, (6MWT) were used to compare the short- and long-distance walk tests results, which were randomly performed under indoor and outdoor environmental conditions. Results: The comparison of the results obtained under the indoor and outdoor conditions revealed statistically significant differences between the groups in the 6MWT and 10MWT (p<.05). Post-hoc tests' results showed significant differences between groups-1 and -2 and between groups-1 and -3 in the 10MWT, and between group-1 and -3 in the 6MWT. Furthermore, in group-2 the 10MWT and 6MWT results significantly differed between the indoor and outdoor conditions, and the values measured under the indoor and outdoor conditions significantly differed between 10MWT and 6MWT (p<.05). Group-3 showed a significant difference in 10MWT results between the indoor and outdoor conditions (p<.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that the results of the short- and long-distance walk tests may differ depending on the walking capacity of patients with chronic stroke and the environmental condition under which the measurement is made, and these effects were greatest for the patients with the limited community ambulation capacity.

  • It is essential for gait analysis to know the distance information. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of start and finish distance on the gait variable during walking. Six adolescent participated in this study. Start condition was given by six conditions.: walking forward from (1) one step, (2) three steps, (3) five steps, (4) ten steps, (5) one step after standing walk, and (6) three steps after standing walk, before contacting the force plate. Stop condition was given by four conditions. : stop after (1) one step, (2) two steps, (3) three steps, and (4) ten steps, passing force plate. Repeated measured one-way ANOVA was utilized for data analysis, and the significant level was set at .05. The largest change from the difference of gait velocity exists between the variables of ground reaction force. There were no significant differences in spatio-temporal and posture(angle) variables, as well as ground reaction force variables with walking over the three steps. There were significant differences in gait velocity, knee angle at heel contact, vertical impulse and ankle angle at toe off in short distance.

  • When the visually impaired walks inside a building like corridor, a GPS cannot be useful for the walker in estimating his or her position unlike the case of outdoor space. This paper presents two novel methods to measure the walking distance using a low cost camera worn on the chest of the visually impaired. In the first method we analyze the periodic variation of image focusing values. Walking steps are counted by checking the period for the rough measure of the walking distance. The second method counts the step number by monitoring fixtures on the ceiling, which have a certain interval. Lamps on the ceiling appeared on the video are monitored in this paper. The T-S fuzzy theory is used to detect lamps, and the walking steps are estimated by the positional variation of the lamp due to the gait of the walker. The two methods are tested in real experiment, and the results are compared.

  • In this paper, a measurement system of moving distance is developed. The error compensation method is also proposed using the characteristics of walking motion. As personal navigation systems and multimedia systems are emerging into the commericial market, men´s moving distance is considered as one of the important information. GPS offers the information easily but GPS can be used only when the satellites are visible. INS can calculate the moving distance anywhere but error is increased with time due to the sensor bias. In this paper, to detect the human walking distance a measurement system of moving distance only using low-cost accelerometer is developed. The sensor bias is estimated and compensated using the walking motion characteristics. The performanced of the proposed system is verified by experiment.
