  • This study analyzed the duct characteristics of hubless rim-driven propeller (RDP) used in underwater robots. In the previous study, flow visualization experiments were performed with an advancing ratio of 0.2 to 1. The vortex at the front of the duct increased in strength while maintaining its size as the advancing ratio decreased. Therefore, it is necessary to study the optimization of the duct shape. Conventional propeller thrusters use acceleration/deceleration ducts to increase their efficiency. However, unlike conventional propellers, it is impossible to apply to airfoil acceleration/deceleration ducts due to the RDP structure. In this study, duct wake flow characteristics, thrust force, and efficiency according to the duct shape of RDP were analyzed using numerical analysis techniques. Duct design is limited and six duct shapes were designed. As a result, an optimized duct shape was designed considering duct wake flow characteristics, thrust force, and efficiency. The shape that the outlet width of the RDP was kept constant until the end of the duct showed higher thrust force and efficiency.

  • Flow structures around a rectangular prism have been investigated by using a PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. A thick turbulent boundary layer was generated by using spires arid roughness elements. The boundary layer thickness, displacement thickness and momentum thickness were 650mm, 117.4mm and 78mm, respectively. The ratio between the model height(40mm) and the boundary layer thickness H/$\delta$, was 0.06. The Reynolds number based on the free stream velocity and the height of the model was 7.9$\times$10$^3$. The PIV measurements were performed at three different wall normal planes. Three recirculation regions at forward facing step, top of the roof and backward facing step are clearly seen and show three dimensional features. Dramatic changes of flow patterns are observed in the wake regions in the different spanwise wall normal planes. Instead of reattachment and recirculation zone, rising streamlines are depicted at the normal planes near the side wall due to the interaction with a rising horse shoe vortex. The peak of turbulent kinetic energy occurs at the separation bubble on top of the roof and the magnitude is 2.5 times higher compared with that of the wake region.

  • Two-dimensional Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES) was carried out to investigate the uniform flow over a twin-box bridge deck (TBBD) with various gap ratios of L/C=5.1%, 12.8%, 25.6%, 38.5%, 73.3% and 108.2% (L: the gap-width between two girders, C: the chord length of a single girder) at Reynolds number, Re=4×104. The aerodynamic coefficients of the prototype deck with gap ratio of 73.3% obtained from the present simulation were compared with the previous experimental and numerical data for different attack angles to validate the present numerical method. Particular attention is devoted to the fluctuating pressure distribution and forces, shear layer reattachment position, wake velocity and flow pattern in order to understand the effects of gap ratio on dynamic flow interaction with the twin-box bridge deck. The flow structure is sensitive to the gap, thus a change in L/C thus leads to single-side shedding regime at L/C≤25.6%, and co-shedding regime at L/C≥35.8% distinguished by drastic changes in flow structure and vortex shedding. The gap-ratio-dependent Strouhal number gradually increases from 0.12 to 0.27, though the domain frequencies of vortices shedding from two girders are identical. The mean and fluctuating pressure distributions is significantly influenced by the flow pattern, and thus the fluctuating lift force on two girders increases or decreases with increasing of L/C in the single-side shedding and co-shedding regime, respectively. In addition, the flow mechanisms for the variation in aerodynamic performance with respect to gap ratios are discussed in detail.

  • A reliable steady/transient hydro-elastic analysis is developed for flexible (composite) marine propeller blade design which deforms according to its environmental load (ship speed, revolution speed, wake distribution, etc.) Hydro-elastic analysis based on CFD and FEM has been widely used in the engineering field because of its accurate results however it takes large computation time to apply early propeller design stage. Therefore the analysis based on a boundary element method-Finite Element Method (BEM-FEM) Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) is introduced for computational efficiency and accuracy. The steady FSI analysis, and its application to reverse engineering, is designed for use regarding optimum geometry and ply stack design. A time domain two-way coupled transient FSI analysis is developed by considering the hydrodynamic damping ffects of added mass due to fluid around the propeller blade. The analysis makes possible to evaluate blade strength and also enable to do risk assessment by estimating the change in performance and the deformation depending on blade position in the ship's wake. To validate this hydro-elastic analysis methodology, published model test results of P5479 and P5475 are applied to verify the steady and the transient FSI analysis, respectively. As the results, the proposed steady and unsteady analysis methodology gives sufficient accuracy to apply flexible marine propeller design.

  • The unsteady-state, incompressible and three-dimensional large eddy simulation(LES) was carried out to analyze the structure of turbulent flow fields according to the operating loads of three-dimensional small-size axial fan(SSAF). LES shows the best prediction performance in comparison with any other Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) method because static pressure coefficients analysed by LES show a little bit larger than measurements including all flow coefficients. Also, it can be known that the wake of SSAF is divided into from axial flow to radial flow before and behind stall region according to the increase of static pressure through LES analysis.

  • The three-dimensional flows in the Weis-Fogh mechanism are studied by flow visualization and numerical simulation by the discrete vortex method. In this mechanism, two wings open, touching their trailing edges (fling), and rotate in opposite directions in the horizontal plane. The structure of the vortex systems shed from the wings is very complicated and their effects on the forces on the wings have not yet been clarified. The discrete vortex method, especially the vortex stick method, is employed to investigate the vortex structure in the wake of the two wings. The wings are represented by lattice vortices, and the shed vortices are expressed by discrete three-dimensional vortex sticks. The vortex distributions and the velocity field are calculated. The pressure is estimated by the Bernoulli equation, and the lift on the wing are also obtained.

  • In this study, we investigate the flow characteristics of lift-type disk which behaves the up-down motion using the large eddy simulation (LES) and immersed boundary method (IBM). Also, we perform the noise analysis using pressure field at 1.35 m distance and reveal the cause of noise to observe the vortical structure analysis of flow result. It is observed that vortical structure and wind shear were generated at leading edge and tower with high velocity deficit and flow separation. High magnitude of flow noise was observed in low frequency range which is from 30 Hz to 60 Hz. It was observed that vortical structure at leading edge was generated in frequency range from 33.3 Hz to 41.6 Hz. Temporal characteristic in vortical structure at leading edge was similar to noise characteristics, having the similar frequency ranges.

  • The flow structure around the free end of a finite circular cylinder (FC) embedded in an atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) over open terrain was investigated experimentally with varying the free end shape. The experiments were carried out in a closed-return type subsonic wind tunnel. A finite cylinder with an aspect ratio (L/D) of 6 was mounted vertically on a long flat plate. The Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter is about Re=7,500. The velocity fields near the FC free end were measured using the single-frame double-exposure PIV method. As a result, for the FC with a right-angled free end, there is a peculiar vortical structure, showing counter-rotating twin vortices near the FC free end. It is caused by the interaction between the entrained irrotational fluids from both sides of FC and the downwash flow from the FC free-end.

  • This study investigates the acoustic property of aspiration realized in English voiceless stops of /Cr/ and /sCr/ clusters. VOT is measured from stops in these clusters produced by two groups; one from native speakers of English and the other from Korean native speakers. Aspiration of stops in different types of clusters is compared to various phonological factors such as location of stress, syllable type, and position in word. Pursuing the idea that phonetic realization is correlated with phonological representation, attempts are made to account for the gradient nature of aspiration of stops on the basis of syllable structure at the phonetic level, which may vary in the wake of resyllabification. Voiceless stops in /Cr/ and /sCr/ clusters are further compared to results obtained in the previous study on /sC/ cluster. Variations in aspiration are also characterized in terms of segmental precedence relation of stops in the clusters, namely, post-[s], pre-[r], or both.
