Though hilly topography influences both wind speeds and directions aloft, only the influence on wind speeds, i.e. the speed-up effect, has been thoroughly investigated. Due to the importance of a model showing the spatial variations of wind directions above hilly terrains, it is worthwhile to systematically assess the applicability and limitations of the model describing the influence of hilly topographies on wind directions. Based on wind-tunnel test results, a model, which describes the horizontal and vertical variations of the wind directions separately, has been proposed in a companion paper. CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) techniques were employed in the present paper to evaluate the applicability of the proposed model. From the investigation, it has been found that the model is acceptable for describing the vertical variation of wind directions by a shallow hill whose primary-to-secondary axis ratio (aspect ratio) is larger than 1. When the overall hill slope exceeds $20^{\circ}$, the proposed model should be used with caution. When the aspect ratio is less than 1, the proposed model is less accurate in predicting the spatial variation of wind directions in the wake zone in a separated flow. In addition, it has been found that local slope of a hill has significant impact on the applicability of the proposed model. Specifically, the proposed model is only applicable when local slope of a hill varies gradually from 0 (at the hill foot) to the maximum value (at the mid-slope point) and then to 0 (at the hill top).
The objective of this work was to investigate the interference effects of two-parallel bridge decks on aerodynamic coefficients, vortex-induced vibration, flutter instability and flutter derivatives. The two bridges have significant difference in cross-sections, dynamic properties, and flutter speeds of each isolate bridge. The aerodynamic static tests and aeroelastic tests were performed in TU-AIT boundary layer wind tunnel in Thammasat University (Thailand) with sectional models in a 1:90 scale. Three configuration cases, including the new bridge stand-alone (case 1), the upstream new bridge and downstream existing bridge (case 2), and the downstream new bridge and the upstream existing bridge (case 3), were selected in this study. The covariance-driven stochastic subspace identification technique (SSI-COV) was applied to identify aerodynamic parameters (i.e., natural frequency, structural damping and state space matrix) of the decks. The results showed that, interference effects of two bridges decks on aerodynamic coefficients result in the slightly reduction of the drag coefficient of case 2 and 3 when compared with case 1. The two parallel configurations of the bridge result in vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) and significantly lower the flutter speed compared with the new bridge alone. The huge torsional motion from upstream new bridge (case 2) generated turbulent wakes flow and resulted in vertical aerodynamic damping H1* of existing bridge becomes zero at wind speed of 72.01 m/s. In this case, the downstream existing bridge was subjected to galloping oscillation induced by the turbulent wake of upstream new bridge. The new bridge also results in significant reduction of the flutter speed of existing bridge from the 128.29 m/s flutter speed of the isolated existing bridge to the 75.35 m/s flutter speed of downstream existing bridge.

The flow around a remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) has been investigated numerically to improve the resistant performance by modifying the hull form of the ROV. In the case of the base hull form considered in this study, form drag rather than friction drag was the dominant component of total drag. Subsequently, the surfaces that were most susceptible to local pressure effects were modified to give them a more streamlined shape. Eleven different hull forms were chosen to undergo surface modification for drag reduction. In addition, four different boat-tail appendages with different slant angles were installed at the stern to reduce the wake vortices that are induced by the local regions of very low pressure. Consequently, a total of 11 different hull forms for drag reduction were considered. The final hull form, which combined the hull for which surface modification resulted in the lowest drag with a boat-tail appendage with a 15-degree slant angle, resulted in a drag reduction of 20%.
The most important component of wind turbine is rotor blades. The developing method of wind turbine was focused on design of rotor blade. By the way, the design of a rotating body is more decisive process in order to adjust the performance of wind turbine. For instance, the design allows the designer to specify the wind characteristics derived by topographical map. The iterative solver is then used to adjust one of the selected inputs so that the desired rotating performance which is directly related to power generating capacity and efficiency is achieved. Furthermore, in order to save the money for manufacturing the rotor blades and to decrease the maintenance fee of wind power generation plant, while decelerating the cut-in speed of rotor. Therefore, the design and manufacturing of rotating body is understood as a substantial technology of wind power generation plant development. The aiming of this study is building-up the profitable approach to designing of rotating body as a system for the wind power generation plant. The process was conducted in two steps. Firstly, general designing and it’s serial testing of rotating body for voltage measurement. Secondly, the serial test results above were examined with the CFD code. Then, the analysis is made on the basis of amount of electricity generated by rotor-blades and of cut-in speed of generator.

While most AUV researches have concerned about single hydrofoil, practical AUV's are generally operated with multiple hydrofoils. Double hydrofoil study attempts to evaluate thrust and efficiency with various flapping motions, and carries out design optimization using parametric analysis. Flow patterns such as vortex shedding and wake-body interaction are carefully investigated during design variable sensitivity analysis. The purpose of this design optimization is to find out the optimal motion that yields maximum thrust and efficiency. The design optimization employes several techniques such as table of orthogonal arrays, Kriging method, ANOVA analysis and MGA. Throughout this research, it is possible to find the optimal values of heaving ratio, heaving shift and pitch shift: Heaving ratio 0.950, heaving shift $23.120^{\circ}$ and pitch shift $89.991^{\circ}$ are found to be optimal values in double hydrofoil motions. Thrust and efficiency are 16.7% and 35.1% higher than existing AUV that did not consider nonlinear dependency of motion parameters. This results may offer an effective framework that is applicable to various AUV motion analyses and designs.
In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of flow around the Daeyeon automatic weather station (AWS 942) and established formulas estimating inflow wind speeds at a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model domain for the area around Pukyong national university using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. Simulated wind directions at the AWS 942 were quite similar to those of inflows, but, simulated wind speeds at the AWS 942 decreased compared to inflow wind speeds except for the northerly case. The decrease in simulated wind speed at the AWS 942 resulted from the buildings around the AWS 942. In most cases, the AWS 942 was included within the wake region behind the buildings. Wind speeds at the inflow boundaries of the CFD model domain were estimated by comparing simulated wind speeds at the AWS 942 and inflow boundaries and systematically increasing inflow wind speeds from $1m\;s^{-1}$ to $17m\;s^{-1}$ with an increment of $2m\;s^{-1}$ at the reference height for 16 inflow directions. For each inflow direction, calculated wind speeds at the AWS 942 were fitted as the third order functions of the inflow wind speed by using the Marquardt-Levenberg least square method. Estimated inflow wind speeds by the established formulas were compared to wind speeds observed at 12 coastal AWSs near the AWS 942. The results showed that the estimated wind speeds fell within the inter quartile range of wind speeds observed at 12 coastal AWSs during the nighttime and were in close proximity to the upper whiskers during the daytime (12~15 h).
Measurements with a Langmuir probe, which are the most often used procedures of plasma diagnostics, can disturb plasma flows and change its characteristics quite a little because the probe should be inserted into thermal flowing plasmas. In this study, we calculated the characteristics of thermal plasmas with and without the probe into an atmospheric argon free-burning arc numerically, and investigated aerodynamic and thermal disturbances with temperature and axial velocity distributions. For the modelling of thermal plasmas, we have made two governing equations, which are on the thermal-flow and electromagnetic fields, coupled together with a commercial CFD package and user-coded subroutines. It was found that thermal disturbances happened to both sides of the probe, before and behind, seriously. Due to the aerodynamic disturbance, we could find that there were the stagnation point in front of the probe and the wake behind it. Therefore, aerodynamic and thermal disturbances caused by the probe insertion should be considered to increase the reliability of the probe diagnostics.

Interests on energy saving devices (ESDs) have been increased with the concern of the energy efficiency design index (EEDI) developed by the international maritime organization (IMO). To study the influence of ESDs, KVLCC2 with energy saving pre-swirl stator (PSS) was selected. To validate the computations, computed nominal wake of the model scale ship was compared with the experimental data, and the numerical uncertainty assessment was done for the full scale ship computations. The PSS changed rotational flow, which was assistant to the propeller thrust for the model and full scale ships. Performances of the full scale ships were predicted by ITTC methods, and new prediction method was proposed.

This paper employs computational tools to predict power increase (or speed loss) and propulsion performances in waves of KVLCC2. Two-phase unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations have been solved using finite volume method; and a realizable k-ε model has been applied for the turbulent closure. The free-surface is obtained by solving a VOF equation. Sliding mesh method is applied to simulate the flow around an operating propeller. Towing and self-propulsion computations in calm water are carried out to obtain the towing force, propeller rotating speed, thrust and torque at the self-propulsion point. Towing computations in waves are performed to obtain the added resistance. The regular short head waves of λ/LPP = 0.6 with 4 wave steepness of H/λ = 0.007, 0.017, 0.023 and 0.033 are taken into account. Four methods to predict speed-power relationship in waves are discussed; Taylor expansion, direct powering, load variation, resistance and thrust identity methods. In the load variation method, the revised ITTC-78 method based on the 'thrust identity' is utilized to predict propulsive performances in full scale. The propulsion performances in waves including propeller rotating speed, thrust, torque, thrust deduction and wake fraction, propeller advance coefficient, hull, propeller open water, relative rotative and propulsive efficiencies, and delivered power are investigated.

The characteristics of the unsteady flowfield of a square prism having a detached splitter plate at the wake side were investigated by advanced vortex method. The instantaneous and average velocity field and pressure field around a square prism without and having splitter plate were calculated by forcing the gap ratio having the maximum drag reduction rate, at Reynolds number $Re=1.0{\times}10^4$ and the width ratio H/B=1.0 of splitter to the prism width. The drag and lift coefficients on the square prism were also obtained. The calculated results agree with the measured drag coefficients and pressure distributions on the square prism. The vortices of the opposite direction at upside and down side of the splitter plate were generated by installing of the plate. And the drag on the square prism was decreased by increasing of the pressure of back face of the prism with the vortices.
