  • Axial fans are widely used in household electrical appliances due to their easy usage and high flow rate for cooling capacity. At the same time, the noise generated by these fans causes one of serious problems. In order to calculate the noise of a fan, we develop the software IFD - Intranet Fans Design. With this software we can design, analysis the performance and predict the noise of fan. The prediction model, which allowed the calculation of acoustic pressure at the blade passing frequency and it's higher harmonic frequencies, has been developed by Lowson's equation. To calculate the unsteady resultant force of the blade, time-marching free-wake method is used.   • Axial fans are widely used in heavy machines due to their ability to produce high flow rate for cooling of engines. At the same time, the noise generated by these fans causes one of the most serious problems. This work is concerned with the low noise technique of discrete frequency noise. The prediction model, which allowed the calculation of acoustic pressure at the blade passing frequency and it's harmonics, has been developed by Farrasat. This theory is founded upon the acoustic radiation of unsteady forces acting on blade. To calculate the unsteady resultant force over the fan blade. Time-Marching Free-Wake Method are used. The ideas of low noise technique are obtained from Blade-Momentum Methods. In this paper, the discussion is confined to the performance and discrete noise of axial fan in heavy equipments.

Development of a Recursive Local-Correlation PIV Algorithm and Its Performance Test

  • The hierarchic recursive local-correlation PIV algorithm with CBC(correlation based correction) method was developed to increase the spatial resolution of PIV results and to reduce error vectors. This new algorithm was applied to the single-frame and double-frame cross-correlation PIV techniques. In order to evaluate its performance, the recursive algorithm was tested using synthetic images, PIV standard images from Visualization Society of Japan, real flows including ventilation flow inside a vehicle passenger compartment and wake behind a circular cylinder with rib let surface. As a result, most spurious vectors were suppressed by employing CBC method. In addition, the hierarchical recursive correlation algorithm improved largely the sub-pixel accuracy of PIV results by decreasing the interrogation window size, increasing spatial resolution significantly.

CFD prediction of vortex induced vibrations and fatigue assessment for deepwater marine risers

  • Using 3D computational fluid dynamics techniques in recent years have shed significant light on the Vortex Induced Vibrations (VIV) encountered by deep-water marine risers. The fatigue damage accumulated due to these vibrations has posed a great concern to the offshore industry. This paper aims to present an algorithm to predict the crossflow and inline fatigue damage for very long (L/D > $10^3$) marine risers using a Finite-Analytical Navier-Stokes (FANS) technique coupled with a tensioned beam motion solver and rainflow counting fatigue module. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) method has been used to simulate the turbulence in the flow. An overset grid system is employed to mesh the riser geometry and the wake field around the riser. Risers from NDP (2003) and Miami (2006) experiments are used for simulation with uniform, linearly sheared and non-uniform (non-linearly sheared) current profiles. The simulation results including inline and crossflow motion, modal decomposition, spectral densities and fatigue damage rate are compared to the experimental data and useful conclusions are drawn.

저 레이놀즈수에서 비정상 에어포일의 흐름 가시화 (Flow Visualization of an Unsteady Airfoil at Low Reynolds Numbers)

  • A boundary layer visualization was carried out in order to investigate the influence of Reynolds number on an oscillating airfoil. An NACA 0012 airfoil is sinusoidally pitched at the quarter chord point with oscillation amplitude of ${\pm}6^{\circ}$. A smoke-wire technique was employed to visualize the boundary layer and the near-wake. The freestream velocities are 1.98, 2.83 and 4.03m/s and corresponding chord Reynolds numbers are $2.3{\times}10^4,\;3.3{\times}10^4$, and $4.8{\times}10^4$, respectively. As the reduced frequency of K=0.1 is fixed, the corresponding frequency of an airfoil was adjusted in each case. The results reveal that the point at which the shear stress in an unsteady boundary layer separation disappears does not correspond with the position of the breakdown of the boundary layer, and that the breakdown of the boundary layer occurs further downstream.

  • 이상의 결과를 정리하면 다음과 같이 요약할 수 있다. (1)Karman의 적분 방정식에 미소 거칠기 영향을 고려함으로서 디퓨져 닥트 표면의 경계층 계산에 응용한 결과 모멘트 적분법 및 실험치와의 비교에서 개선된 결과임이 확인되었다. (2) 국소 거칠기의 효과를 주는 방법으로는 Cole의 벽 및 와 법칙에 Clauser의 거칠기 함수와, 압력 기울기를 고려한 부가 형상계수 값으로 적분 방정식에 응용할 수 있다. (3) 국소 거칠기 분포에 의하여 경계층 특성을 교란시켜 표면 마찰력 계수를 줄일 수 있어 마찰력 손실을 줄일 수 있는 방안이 제시되었다.

  • Animation understanding and time-resolved analysis of the wake characteristic of 2-D sharp plane flows were executed by applying the multi-vision PIV to a sharp plane(three angle of attacks : $15^{\circ}, \; 30^{\circ}, \; 45^{\circ}$) submerged within a circulating water channel($Re = 2{\times}10^4$). The macroscopic shedding patterns were discussed in terms of instantaneous velocity, vorticity, velocity profile, kinetic energy, turbulent intensity, frequency analysis. Particularly, the time-averaged distribution of turbulent intensity in each experimental cases revealed separate island-like small regions magnitude of turbulent intensity was always strengthened.

Calculation of Wavemaking Resistance of High Speed Catamaran Using a Panel Method

  • In this work, a panel method is described, which cart solve the flow field round a surface-piercing body that experiences lift and wave resistance. As the body boundary condition, a Dirichlet type is employed, and as the free surface boundary condition the Poisson type is implemented, while in its discretization Dawson's 4-point upwind difference scheme is utilized, and as the Kutta condition a Morino-Kuo type is chosen. As to the type of singularity, source panels are distributed on the free surface, and source and dipole panels on the body surface, and dipole panels on the wake surface. For a sample run, a catamaran of the parabolic Wigley hull is chosen, for which experimental data are available, and the predictions by the numerical means and by the experiment are compared for a wide range of parameters.

와류격자법에 의한 정상유동중의 상반회신 프로펠러 성능해석 (Analysis of Contra-Rotating Propellers in Setady Flow by a Vortex Lattice Method)

  • In this paper a Vortex Lattice Method is used to predict the performances of a contra-Rotating Propeller. Greeley and Kerwin's(1982) wake model is adopted instead of the exact trailing vortex geometry. The interaction of the two propellers is treated by the sense that the induction of one propeller upon the other propeller is averaged in the circumferential direction . Two single propellers (DTRC 4119 & DTRC 4842) are chosen and compared with the experimental and other numerical results published. Then the computational results for three CRP's (4-0-4 CRP(DTRC 3686+DTRC 3687A) 4-0-5 CRP(DTRC 3686+DTRC 3849) & DTRC CRT(DTRC 5067+DTRC 5068) are compared with the experimental and numerical results published. The interaction of both propellers by the change of inflow velocity and circulation of each propeller is investigated.

  • This paper illustrates how simulation modeling can be of substantial help in designing constructions in the vicinity of airport runway and presents results about the influence of aircraft wake vortices through computer simulation. The cross-wind energy dissipation rate is estimated from the Y-directional velocity spectrum for a sample in a real meteorological observation data. The eddy region about cross wind in the vicinity of airport runway is highly dependent on the height and shape of the buildings and the AOA of aircraft is greatly influenced by Y-directional velocity occurred by dint of separation region in runway.
